PAD PED SURF AND TURF

The drinks were exceptional! I would just come for the cocktails ! Every dish was Amazingly delicious! Waiter was a funny guy, we had lots of laughs ! It was for my 2 friends' birthdays, they enjoyed the food and drinks very much. Will definitely return for other occasions. I like the cozy atmosphere as well.

After hearing such great things about Bhima's over the years, we decided to finally give it a try and the experience was lukewarm. The food was disappointing. Although most of the portions were generous, the flavour was lacking. The oysters were a bit too bland; it seemed as if all the natural brine was gone. The papaya salad needed more fish sauce, lime and it wasn't spicy as advertised. The pakora on the side of my entree was cold compared to the main dish. Overall, the value was not great. For the price, we were expecting a culinary experience but were left thinking we've had better Indonesian/asian fusion foods elsewhere. The service was ok; we were rushed through ordering and had to ask for water refills. I wouldn't go so far as saying I'd never return. I'd be open to giving them another try but I'm not going out of my way to eat here again.

Went on a school night back in the summer, reservations are definitely recommended! Don't judge a book by its cover, because the interior of the restaurant is much more elegant than what the exterior suggests. Service: Waiters are very friendly, and have a few tables to manage so their attention may be divided at times. However, they're highly knowledgeable, and will let you know of the daily special (off-menu of course). Only irk is that the whole dinner took about 2 hours with drinks included. Food: Where do I begin? Had the roasted duck with fried egg noodles and chang mai curry - the duck breast was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the curry struck a perfect balance of flavours with a strong peanut base. The price was fairly steep, but it was definitely worth it for the dining experience and "swan bag" (leftovers). Overall: Unique flavours in a nice upscale restaurant in Waterloo - a hidden gem for sure.

Reserved for a group of 9, chose to do family style to try their top dishes in one go. On the outside, the place looks sketchy and run down. On the inside, it's quite beautiful, especially if you go while it's still bright out, with the sun peeking in through the windows. There were a few other tables filled but not too lively. Anyways, we were served a 3 course dinner, and they made two of each dish. So basically 5 of us shared a set, and the other 4 shared another set. Appetizers were delicious (there were 4 or 5 of them). The 5 or 6 mains had huge portions but we thought the appetizers were actually better. Dessert was pretty standard. To sum it up, it was like an asian fusion experience with great ingredients, huge portions. I'm not sure if that justifies the price though - it was $50 per person for family style. I think if it was $35-40 I would gladly go back, but sitting at $50 before tax is a huge sum to pay for a meal as a student. Some of the cocktails were very alcoholic, while others, like the Bhima Colada I had, were fruity and not too alcoholic. The service was good - our server came to check on us often and was very helpful, and the food came at a steady pace. It was a bit inconsistent between courses though. Sometimes only half our plates would be taken away even after we were all done. Sometimes only half our utensils were taken away (I know that if you leave it on the table they don't usually take it away but I wasn't aware that our utensils were getting replaced). This is just a nitpick but you would expect some more consistency with the amount you're paying for. Overall we had a great time, and the duck shaped tin foil for the leftovers were a cute touch (though difficult to carry back home haha). I recommend going with a larger group, and definitely do family style!

Cha gio (I really think the servers pronounce it wrong)

Ever since I was in first year, this was the restaurant I would tell myself that I'd go for an anniversary or some special celebration. Tbh I'm glad I didn't -- just casually called up my girlfriends to go try this supposedly great place. I was thrown off at first because when I went in I was greeted by a Caucasian person. What? I thought it was an Indonesian restaurant??? Turns out that all the servers were Caucasian and only the peeps in the kitchen were of Asian descent...in that, I was a little disappointed, but what can you do? The service itself was great. Our waters were regularly refilled. The server would come by occasionally to see how we were doing. I do question their pronunciation of the menu items. I'm trying not to judge them but I doubt that they are fluent in Indonesian, which kinda ruined the authenticity of this place. I had the cha gio ("cha ghee oh" is apparently how they pronounce it but if this word is from Vietnamese origin it should actually be "ja yaw"). These are spring rolls wrapped in rice paper as opposed to spring roll paper. The outside is crunchy but the inner part of the wrap was soggy and tastes exactly like what wet rice paper would taste like. The filling was pretty salty, so it definitely did not go well with their fish sauce used for dipping. Definitely needed the small pickled veggie salad that came with it, or else it would've been way to salty as a dish. For my main, I had the bakmie goreng. Please do NOT order if you want a "fried noodle" dish. Didn't enjoy this one bit because I felt like the noodles were overcooked (very soft and mushy when you bite them) and then they mix it with a curry sauce. So it was basically curry tasting mush, ew. Definitely not fried noodle. One thing I would really like to see is a full description of the food items. One of my friend's dishes, the Mel brown, was too sweet for her liking and contained all these veggies and sauce that she didn't like one bit. The only description was that it was pulled pork mixed with "the works", whatever that is. A ore in depth description means we would have a better idea of what to expect, y'know? Overall, I was terribly disappointed with my experience. I was looking forward to eat here for so long, but now I have, it's really nothing great. Too many expectations that weren't met...Maybe I got the wrong dishes, or maybe this place just isn't for me.

Don't let the outside decor scare you, this is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Waterloo so far! The cook has lived in several East Asian countries over the past 20 years so he's adopted their taste. Their servers are friendly and professional. The decor and ambience are hippy but warm. My recommendation: 1. Try the appetizer combo. 2. Always remember their main courses are huge - don't order too much.

Great food, great service. Best in KW.

A piece of advise if you want to visit here: forget about the price. You are not going to appreciate all the effort Bhima Warung put in if you can't let go those digits. It's pricey, I agree. But what you get in return is the best food and service you could find in Waterloo or even the whole KW. I'd say it's totally worth it. We ordered oz tail special appetizer, ribs, beef and shrimp, crème brûlée, cake with chocolate ice cream. (I really wish I had taken down the name for the dishes). All of them are wonderful.

I definitely enjoyed coming to Bhima's Warung, but for the price of the food and my opinion of the taste, it was mediocre. Don't get me wrong, I love the ambiance of Bhima's Warung as well as the cute way they pacakge the food. Furthermore the service is pretty excellent, but in particular I wasn't a big fan of my dish, the poo lan baru. To me, the noodles tasted like they were boiled just with normal water, but lacking a little bit of the seasoned broth to take out the noodle flour stench (not sure how to describe it, but the taste is like the mixture of the wonton noodle stench mixed with flour stench). I really dislike the flour stenches particularly for noodles, so even if the noodles were boiled with the soup, the stench was still present to me. I thought the curry was a great compliment to the noodles as mixing it up definitely removed the flour taste slash stench to the noodles. The food was more Asian Fusion to me than Indonesian. Definitely beautiful presentations in some of their dishes, but not one of my favourites in terms of taste. The taste seemed a little odd to me and didn't seem to compliment each other as well as I hoped for it to (but that's just my opinion). With a four and a half star rating, definitely a lot of people enjoy this place I enjoyed the cha gio though. It definitely was a little different, but the presentation and creativity of the dish was well thought out. The taste was fairly complimentary in my opinion.

Truly amazing place with fusion of southern Asian and North American. The severs are always friendly and professional. I go here usually at least once a month. Remember to make a reservation. Sometimes it's really hard to find a seat

While the outside of the restaurant makes it appear as a run-down Asian restaurant with dodgy dishes, this is far from the case. Bhimas is my favourite restaurant in the Waterloo Region. Hands down. If you have not ever had Indonesian cuisine, you must check out Bhimas. Once you're inside it feels like you are no longer in Waterloo. The crowds of Unuversity students are gone, and you feel like you're in a hipster area of downtown Toronto. It's an odd feeling. Note: Please do yourself a favour and get a full experience by getting drinks, apps, entree and dessert. Bhimas is quite pricey but it's always worth it. Bhimas offers some set courses at different times during the year which is recommended if this is your first time. This menu will contain dishes you would likely not have ordered otherwise that are very delicious. I will mention each time I have been the specials menu is quite long and complex and I always end up randomly picking a dish. I have yet to make a poor decision. The meals although expensive, will fill you up. And I eat a lot of food... During my last visit we ordered the (forgive me these aren't the "real" names as I do not remember what they were called) grilled quails (special), red curry steak, rack of lamb and braised bison ribs (special). All of these dishes were delicious with the right level of spice and amazing flavours you would not try anywhere else in the Waterloo region. There is a nice blend of (forgive me I dislike when people say this but to not overly complicated things) Asian flavours blended with more Western dishes (rack of lamb, steaks, etc). We also had their special mojitos which was good, but I will say is nothing too special. They were quite limey but not with enough mint so not really my favourite ever but still good. The restaurant cooks everything to order and thus is quite slow. Know this before you go. Also the restaurant is quite packed by dinner time so reservations would be recommended. Lastly, it gets quite hot and smoky inside the restaurant so just keep that in mind. Most importantly however, is just go. Do it at least once.

Duck had no flavour..

Was here a while ago from friends' recommendation. For an Asian restaurant they don't season their food nearly well enough. The duck dish I had almost no taste in the middle. Super bland, all the favouring is only at the surface and no sauce. The atmosphere and presentation was nice, but I had high expectations and was very disappointed by the taste of the food.

They wrap your left overs to go in a swan tin foil!

Waited the longest time to try this place. They're only open after 5pm for dinner and is rather pricey for my over-30k-in-debt budget. Came here for a friends birthday and it was one of the best dining experiences in Waterloo. The decor of the restaurant is a big contrast to its store-front. It really made you feeling like you were in a cozy family owned restaurant in a tropical country. We started off with some appetizers and a bottle of riesling wine. The waitress was very patient with our large group of 9 and gave good recommendations. The entrees portions are really big so I would recommend skipping the appetizers. I had the surf and turf which was a red curry beef & shrimp w/ jasmine rice. The dish was tasty but not mind-blowing as I was expecting. What really made Bhima a 5-star was the service. I casually mentioned that it was my friends birthday to the waitress and she surprised us all with a birthday dessert. The dessert was a banana tempera with vanilla ice cream covered in syrup. Our waitress also wrapped our leftovers to-go in the shape of a swan! (see picture). Overall she was very patient with our loud obnoxious college student group which is rare in this town. Will definitely be back to try more of their dishes! Highly recommended to anyone in Waterloo.

There's a lot of hype around this restaurant, so before I had a chance to try it last week, I had high expectations. To summarize: Good, but not worth the price. When each person pays over 50 dollars at an establishment, I'm expecting a culinary experience that's special. I did not get that tonight. The atmosphere in Bhimas Warung feels almost temple like - dim lights, vegetation, Indonesian displays. The owners clearly put effort, and it feels great to eat inside a well decorated restaurant. However, the room felt really dimly lit, and the candle placed at each table did really little to help. The ambience could be romantic under the right circumstances, but could also just be fun and relaxed. The service was curt and effective, but could've been faster. We also waited quite a while for the bill. We ordered the chicken/scallop dumplings as an appetizer, and the monkfish/lobster tail and roast duck entrees. The mango puree of the Chicken/Scallop dumplings tasted exciting and tropical, and the dish tasted great. The scallops are the highlight, as you can taste how fresh they are. However, there were only 6 pieces, for the extravagant price of 17 dollars. It was good, but I wouldn't say it's worth the value. This is pretty much the theme of this review, in case you havent been following. In both entrees, the curry was very good. Each dish came with two types of noodles, a soft type and a crunchy type. Mixed with the curry, both were extremely appetizing. Ewch dish had tomatoes and warm pineapple, which tastes downright tropical in the curry sauce. It was strange tasting the sweetness of a warm pineapple (very strange texture when warm) mixed with the curry, but it definitely wasn't bad. The roast duck was cooked rare, which my girlfriend didn't appreciated, but I did. Even so, I thought it was average... the texture of the roast duck tasted as good as pretty much anywhere else. Similarly, I felt the monkfish was good but nothing special - you can find similar quality almost anywhere. Finally, the lobster tail tasted dry, but when mixed with the amazing curry it's great. In conclusion, Great/Amazing curry, interesting combo, good-but-not-great everything else. That being said, I regret not ordering the lamb - I think properly cooked roast lamb in this curry sauce would be mouthwatering. Maybe I'm just not used to fine dining, but I can think of so many ways to spend $50 per person on food. I think Bhimas Warung is new and exciting enough to experience once, but I don't think I see a reason to visit again. There's nothing wrong with the food - it's good! Just nowhere near enough to justify the price.

Service is decent and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. You can take out, or eat at their limited number of tables or counter to the side. Ambiance is fair, but then again it's a food court. We ordered the Beef Rendang on Rice, Mie Goreng Noodle, and Seafood Laksa for takeout. Because I've had authentic Indonesian, Singapore and Malaysian meals/these types of dishes at other restaurants, I would rate these ones as being fair. The noodle was a bit too salty, and the portions small for the price. The Laksa tasted good, but again, could use a little bit more noodle. Forgot to take a photo of the Laksa, but it came with 3 shrimps, 2 fishballs, 2 small triangles of tofu and half an egg. The photos below show the size of the take out container, and then meal portioned out on a plate at home. I can see this price being charged at full service restaurants, but it is too pricey for a food court. Similarly, the prepared sauces were just ok. If you want entree type dishes, they come frozen only and are not made fresh to order. I did purchase the chicken satay sticks but they are still in the freezer so haven't had a chance to try them yet.

I don't recall NaiNai being here the last time I visited so I gave it a shot. I went with in my mind the safe option of Stir Fried Rice Noodles (Kwetiau Goreng) which is a flat noodle. The dish reminded me of pad seew which I love. I ordered it with the chicken and overall the dish was flavourful with a slightly sweet taste from the sweet soy sauce. Again it reminded me a lot of pad seew and I would put it above a food court joint like Thai Express but not quite as good as some of the pad seew at some of the Thai restaurants in the city. Service was friendly and they give you one of those buzzers to alert you when your food is ready. It was pretty busy when I went so my food took more than 10 minutes to be ready but not too bad considering how many people were ahead of me. Overall not a bad choice if you're looking to grab something in the food court. Looking forward to coming back and trying some of their other offerings.

I ordered their IndoMie Rendang which is a seasoned instant noodle cup topped with beef rendang that was so flavorful and tender. To go with this, I enjoyed Thai Milk Tea as a refreshment. The only thing I would knock is the IndoMie cup portions are small when the food tastes so good! Even though it was a jumbo cup, it was only slightly bigger than the drink cup. The shop feels more like a convenience store so there's not much ambience. The service was quick and friendly for takeout. Skip it or hit it? It's a good place to try for Indonesian food but I haven't been back.

Downtown Core

This Indonesian Food Festival is a yearly event held at Sankofa Square (formerly Yonge-Dundas…read moreSquare) for only one day. It is organized by the Indonesian Consulate General. This year it was held on 2025-07-26. It started in 2016, but was suspended in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic. Most of the stalls sell food but there is one for the consulate and one for indigenous art. There are live cooking demos from Indonesian chefs. The main stage is for cultural performances, martial arts, and trivia contests. Some vendors only accept cash while others accept debit/credit. Food vendors include Kopi Thyme, Dapur Gembul, Happy Hot Canada, Highly Likely Coffee, Indomie, KAMU, Coreta Indonesia and Azima Tempe, among others. Performers include Zapin Melayu, Senandika Band, Lintas Nusa and Swaragita Angklung. There is definitely a wide variety of food and drinks but many of the lineups are long. It was a hot day, 26C feeling by 36C. We ordered several food from various food stalls. Some of what we ordered was: 1.Satay Combo ($30) with Nasi Kunig (yellow rice) and Corn Fritters from Warung Du Yatie. 2. Siomai Bandung ($15) from Happy Hot Canada. 3. Kari Ayam (Curry Chicken) Eggrolls ($10), Laksa Butter Cookies ($10), Savoury Kari Butter Cookie ($10) from Kopi Thyme. 4. Butter Mochi (2 for $6, chose Golden Mango and Ube Velvet) and Beef Rendang ($16) from Basil King. 5. Iced Cendol ($8) and Ranginang (shrimp chips) ($7) from Dapur Gembul. There is free WiFi. The are is wheelchair accessible. There are no washrooms but you can find them in neighbouring Eaton Centre. There is paid neighbourhood street parking and a Green P parking lot under the Square.
