A very nice classic 兰州牛肉面 restaurant, with very friendly staff. The wait time was long, but honestly, was expected with how busy it was and the kindness and helpfulness of the staff made it worth the wait. I had the Traditional Lanzhou hand pulled noodles, that had good texture and very authentic. I also like that they separated the soup from the noodles for takeout order so it was convenient that the noodles weren't mushy. The BBQ potato and BBQ sausage skewers were also very tasty. a little bit over-seasoned on the potato, but overall great. sausage skewers were sweet and spicy, the potato was perfectly crispy and thin. I tried the chefs recommendation and I expected it to be spicy but sadly it was just red in colour. The noodles had good texture and the bowl was a good deal for the amount you pay but I just wish there was some spice and more flavour. Otherwise, we also got the dry chili oil noodles and those were had a good flavour and I loved the texture of the noodles. Was a frequent visitor during my university days, and returning to eat a massive bowl of hand pulled noods was very nostalgic for me. I ordered the traditional Lanzhou hand pulled noodle, requested size 3 (from 9 different noodle size options) and ordered lamb skewers as an appetizer. The noodles were what I remembered them to be; large portion, chewy, spicy, and with tender meat slices. Each bite of noodles coated with the chili oil and meat warmed up my soul as it's been years since I've had a bowl of noodles at gols. The lamb skewers were also very flavourful (slightly spicy), juicy, and cooked to order. They also had a cash discount of 5% so remember to bring your cash! There's a window where you can watch them make hand made noodles fresh from scratch. It was awesome! That kept my daughters busy while we waited in line. Only downside is it only has 1 unisex washroom in the whole restaurant. Seems a bit strange. Service: We only waited in line for 15 mins but when we left the line up it was out the door way. Since this restaurant is located near Waterloo university it was packed with university students. The service was excellent. Our server was so knowledgeable and explain how the noodles work and what was in each dish. He also kept refilling our water. Our food came really quick. Food: Ok the best part of the review is definitely the food. There was a variety of bbq items on the menu. We got the bbq pork belly skewers and the bbq lamb skewers. The pork belly was so crispy, moist and coated with this sweet sauce that was so yummy! The lamb skewers had some cumin and chilli flakes. Also so tasty! The soup was so amazing! We each order the beef noodle soup. You get your choice of 9 different noodle with different thickness. My daughters had the thinner noodles and I had the super thick ones. The beef was tender, noodles was chewy and the broth was so flavourful and not too spicy, even my kids was able to handle it. This place is located in the One Zo plaza by Laurier/Waterloo. I'm always trying to try new places whenever I'm in the area to visit someone! We were asked to sanitize our hands upon entering and then to write down our personal info before ordering (for covid). We got the beef hand pulled noodle (type #3) soup and beef chow mein. We got the noodle soup in mild and it was just perfect and tasted great. The chow mein on the other hand...looked much better in the picture. It lacked colour and flavour...and although it wasn't a bad choice, I would've preferred the noodle soup. We also wanted to other two other dishes (not sure what it's called but it looked like clear jelly noodle) but they didn't have it. Also note that their portions are quite large! The tables were spaced out, however the waiting area for dine in and take out (both are separate areas) were crowded affff. Everyone was pretty much shoulder to shoulder. 100% don't order delivery. It's a lot more value (and cheaper by quite a bit) to just go to the restaurant. Service is kind of bad (the layout of the restaurant makes it hard for you to be seen by the staff) so go to the counter to pay/ask for to go containers bc you'll probably need a container. The pro about this place is that you get a lot of food for what you pay, and the food is always consistently good. I'd been to the Lanzhou noodle shop in Montreal years ago and that place has lived rent-free in my head since then (as attested in a past Yelp rating). I was skeptical that their offshoots would be as good, but somehow, this actually is. (And unlike the Montreal location, you can actually have room to sit comfortably.) The noodles are still hand-pulled in full display, and the flavors of all the ingredients are great too. The lamb skewer was deliciously cuminy. I had the "tomato beef noodle" this time (not on the older menu!), and in addition to the noodles being super flavorful and chewy, the vegetables were all fresh and crunchy, and the beef was cooked perfectly. Hand pulled noodles is exactly what you need during the cold winter months. For about $10-$12 you can get flavourful noodle soup! On Fridays - Sundays they serve the Beef Tendon, which I ordered in the regular size. The traditional is seen in the photo but was upgraded to a large aka MASSIVE. We also ordered the baked oysters. I was craving some spicy noodles and starting scouring the internet for a good, local spot. I found a Reddit thread that mentioned Gol's Lanzhou Noodle a few times so I figured it was worth checking out. It's located in the Mel's plaza and is sandwiched between to other restaurants but it's really worth checking out! The building itself is really nice. The tables are neat and spaced well, allowing diners to see the chefs hand-pulling the noodles while they enjoy their meals. We came in to place a takeout order and the staff were very polite and answered my question with lots of helpful information. The wait time was pretty minimal which we didn't even notice because we were watching the chefs at work. I had the Dan Dan noodles at medium spice but I really should have opted for hot. They were delicious, had a nice level of chew, and the meat itself was so flavourful. I also had an order of the spicy cucumber which was delicious! It's not very spicy so don't be scared to try it. My boyfriend had the traditional hand-pulled noodle beef soup which he loved. I tried a spoonful and I liked that the thinner noodles were a bit softer. The broth was very tasty! He also had the edamame which was good. I'm not a big fan of edamame so I can't really judge. As a takeout option, it was really great. The speed of service was well managed and since I paid cash, I received a small discount. They also had a sign up for a special, but we didn't try it. This place serves fairly decent noodles in a fairly beautifully decorated store! They specialize predominantly in beef noodles (as stated in the name, the Lanzhou type), and even their bathroom sinks draw inspiration from these noodle soups (the sink basin resembles the bowl in which the noodles are served). Our group of five ordered three beef tendon noodles with the thicker hand pulled ramen, and my mom and sister shared the large bowl beef noodles (+ $2 for more noodles) with skinny ramen. The sizes are very fair for their price points; my mom and sister couldn't finish their portion and neither could I! The ramen texture was also excellent - I loved that the slightly thicker type was so al dente. The ramen strands remained chewy and springy even as I neared the end of my bowl. Although the thinner ramen strands became soggier earlier, they were more effective at soaking up the sauce and broth due to the greater surface area. I did enjoy the broth, but unfortunately, found myself to be very thirsty and dehydrated for the remainder of the day. I suspect that there's a pinch too much MSG or salt in the broths... Also, my main complaint is that my beef tendon noodles had only one piece of tendon. The remaining pieces were all beef brisket. Although brisket is typically more expensive than the beef shank used in their beef noodle soup, I found this advertising to be a little misleading... I paid for tendons and expect such, not a brisket replacement! There were also signs on the table that if you gave them a 5 star review on Yelp or TripAdvisor, they'd offer 10% off. That didn't sit quite well with me - ratings shouldn't and can't be bought! I wish I took a picture... Overall, this place serves hearty, student budget friendly noodles. I came here for dinner with a friend and we dodged the dinner rush. We got seated right away and right after, there was a 25 minute wait time. I decided to go with the basic beef tenderloin bowl while my friend got the vegetarian stir fry. Their soup and noodles is easily the best in Waterloo. Gol's is the noodle of noodle houses in Waterloo. And I say that because the noodles are actually really good. They're hand pulled in house and has a very good chew to them. This is a place with two entrances; one beside the premium dumpling place and the other side of the building near bk. It gets busy. Their main dish is a beef shank spicy noodle soup. Very different from the Shanghai beef noodle soup. They're not the same. The broth lacks flavor, but they give you lots of vinegar and chili oil to add to your soup. The best thing about this place is the value. The large noodles soup is $12 and can serve two people comfortably unless you're really hungry. It comes with a few slices of shank that's nicely cooked - tender and breaks apart in your mouth and a few slices of daikon. The place has no a/c. It gets hot and be prepared to share tables with others. They speak very little English, the menu is very picturesque. I'd highly recommend looking at the other tables to see what they've ordered. Having been gone from Waterloo for almost two years, I was happy to see that there were a lot more choices in the University Plaza areas, especially one that served Lanzhou noodles. Getting seated didn't take too long, though we did go at around 9:30 pm. The restaurant itself was decently clean, with modern enough decor. Makes sense, seeing as they opened probably pretty recently. The prices are pretty amazing for how good the food is, and for how much food you get. I ordered the traditional noodle soup, as well as the Lanzhou style cold skin (which basically ended up being another serving of cold noodles). The broth was not super salty, and the noodles had good chew. Basically everything you could want from a bowl of Lanzhou pulled noodles. Would I come back? Definitely. I am beyond thrilled to have a delicious Hand-pulled noodle place close to the UW campus! When you first walk in, you are hit SMACK with an incredible aroma. I don't know what it is about the place, but even the smell penetrating throughout the restaurant seems authentic. The food tastes great too. I've had the classic lanzhou beef soup noodles, Stir fry lamb square noodles, stir fry beef noodles, tea egg, and the potato seaweed salad appetizer. Potato Seaweed Salad Appetizer: 5/5 I am actually so surprised I liked this dish. Just imagine if the seaweed salad you usually get in your poke had a baby with julienned brined potatoes in some really weird but in a cool way vinaigrette. It was both familiar and new! Classic Beef noodles - 4.5/5 BE WARNED. THE LARGE SIZE IS HUMONGOUS. Even though it's $2 more expensive than the regular (which isn't relatively that much), the portion size is HAYUGE. I remember when the waiter carried out the bowl my entire table started laughing in nervousness because there is no way the average human being could finish a large. The noodles are really chewy and are not too soggy. The thickness is just right. The broth isn't overly salty. Note that the soup defaults with spicy chili oil so if you don't like spiciness, tell them in advance that you don't want it (you can add more later). The beef was also flavourful and tender. My only complaint is that the ratio of noodles to toppings is wayyyyyyy off. They only give you two slivers of radish too and no egg. Egg: 3.5/5 The egg is an extra $1 and comes cold. It's marinated very well though! Note that this isn't ramen so the yolk will be cooked. Lamb: 3.5/5 This was such a fun dish to eat. Like who knew square noodles could be a thing? The veggies were also sauteed nicely with a slight char to them. My issue is that the lamb was underseasoned and overcooked :( It would be a lot better if the lamb chunks were 1) bigger 2) seasoned with some cumin/additional spices. Came here for dinner today because I had been hearing nothing but good things about this restaurant since it opened a few weeks ago. It was packed and there was a small lineup forming when we got there (this was around 7PM on a Friday night), but my friend and I were seated after around 5 minutes of waiting. I ordered the beef tendon noodles ($10.99)- an item that is only available Friday through Sunday. Portions were generous, noodle texture was good (very clearly hand-pulled), broth was flavourful, and (my) stomach was happy. My friend ordered the large bowl of traditional lanzhou beef noodles ($11.99), and to say that the bowl was huge would be an understatement. Two people could easily split a large bowl and be very satisfied. This was also tasty. The interior of the restaurant was nicely decorated, with lanterns hanging from the ceiling and other traditional Chinese accents here and there. The only "negative" part of my experience here was that I was seated in front of and facing the entrance, so people waiting were just standing there watching me eat. You cannot go wrong with traditional Chinese lamien at Gol's! The portion sizes are HUGE and so budget friendly. A regular noodle soup is $9, and for $2 more you can upgrade to a large which gives you at least two pounds of noodles. The noodles themselves are hand-pulled and authentic. You have the option between thin noodles or thick noodles, or flat noodles. All of them are very yummy, but my favorite is definitely the flat noodles. The stir fry here is good as well!
