The food was super delicious! If you're into burritos I recommend the breakfast burrito with chorizo and add beans, it's a must The staff was friendly and kept refilling our drinks and they allowed us to choose where we'd like to sit which I thought was cooool. This no frills diner/ cafe hit the spot! My family and I are breakfast people and we are picky. Every Sunday after attending mass, we continue the celebration with breakfast. Being 6000 miles from home(Guam), we wanted to ensure we were satisfied with breakfast after mass at Santa Clara church, downtown Oxnard. Just around the corner from the church on South A street sits a hidden gem of a spot, BG Cafe. We searched Google and chose this place over Fresh and Fabulous. Our decision was based on their operating hours. 6am to 2pm, indicating that breakfast and lunch was for sure their specialty. The restaurant was a very humble setting with some vintage antiques on display. Just as vintage as well was the hospitality and service. You know, that service that just seems so genuine. We were given a 10 minute wait for seating and were seated promptly from there. The hostess brought our drinks and the coffee was fresh and hot, very important because no one wants lukewarm coffee. Our server, Maggie came around to take our orders and she was extremely welcoming and patient with our order process. We kinda knew what we wanted because we browsed the menu via their website during our seating wait. My wife and youngest daughter shared a Pancake Combo plate, daughter 2 had the corned beef hash, daughter 3 ordered 2 biscuits and country gravy and I ordered the traditional eggs Benedict with hash browns. The pancakes were just the right texture and moistness. The biscuits were so perfect and the fresh baked goodness came through and paired awesomely with the delicious country gravy. The corned beef hash had right amount of crisp on the outside without being burnt and dry. A clear indication of a well seasoned grill and cooks who know what they doing. My order was so delicious. My kids have never tried a Hollandaise sauce and upon their first taste, it was like a magical experience for my 2 older daughters. The light and refreshing sauce on 2 perfectly poached eggs, sitting on generous ham slices, pillowed by 2 perfectly toasted breakfast muffins was on point with presentation and taste. The included hash browns were perfectly cooked as well. I hate soggy hash browns and these were everything but soggy. Perfect crisp outside and very well seasoned. By the way, Maggie kept that piping hot coffee coming and I never once realized an empty cup. Truly impressive given how busy it was. Amidst the crowd, we never felt like we were competing to get service. We felt as if we were the only customers in the restaurant. So let me explain my low raiding for this place. The review is based on my visit on 3/20/19 at 11am. Was the food yummy? Not really Was the service good? Not at all Would I eat here again? Never I have experienced poor customer service by servers on a handful of occasions but Violet from BGs cafe takes the crown! I truly want to believe she was just having a bad day and decided to take it out on the customers because if that's who she is all the time I don't know how she is still a server. Violet was rude, unhelpful and not friendly at all. At one point she came to our table (party of 8) to check on us but when we asked for more coffee she said "oh I'm not your server I'm just helping." wait, what? Lol. We also asked a question about food and she said she didn't know, hmmmm well, go ask, get the customer an answer. Awful services just awful. She seriously did not want to be there- I don't blame her but come on that's her job. The place was busy and it appeared to be very understaffed. The food is bland, nothing special. With so many options in the area for breakfast and lunch, I will not be returning here. read more

Oldie but goodie...reasonable prices. Homemade salsa. Feels like walking into your grandma's house. Tasty food, taste fresh and homemade, coffee on point and homemade biscuits are insane. Im a fan of their breakfast enchiladas and chilaquiles. Come in test yourself. Oh can't forget staff, their all friendly and place is clean. Seating might need a facelift and sometimes homeless hangs out outside by a near bench but they keep to themselves. read more

Ummmm we LOVE coming here for breakfast! Btw it now opens @ 7 am on Sundays. My favorite is a Mexican breakfast plate that has serrano chilies and the cinnamon rolls and biscuits- OMG WE LOVE LOVE LOVE those last two! Adding menu pictures so you see what I'm talking about. Food is hit and miss. Service is bad. Attitude of staff is that they are doing you a favor by taking your order.

First the lady said it was going to take 15 mins to get seated we waited over 30 mins and I asked her what's taking so long she said that she is waiting for the other party to finish eating!!!!! I asked her how she is calculating the time of other people eating. Secondly we finally got our table and it took 10 mins to get our drinks and the menus. We order chorizo with eggs and sirloin steak with eggs the eggs weren't cooked well they were still raw and the chorizo with eggs were over cooked it was too dry! They also forgot my french fries. Irritating waiting for a waitress to help me after I sat after at my table, idk what's the deal but they take so much time to help me. When you enter it saids take a seat, therefore it's hard for them to notice you. I go the gym down the street and after I'm down working out, I stop by. Definitely they need improvements. UPDATE: today we went back to eat our usual, chilaquiles, we got exceptional service, SARAI was our waitress and she did an outstanding job! Very friendly for the first time someone recommended the tortilla soup, it was excellent. we didn't even know they had soup until SARAI told us about it. We are very happy that BG's is stepping up on the customer service. Food is delicious, Chilaquiles and pancakes today were delicious, this is not the first time we come here, we come often, the beans are really good. I noticed no one here is friendly, most waitresses look like they don't really like their job, don't get me wrong they are not rude or anything like that, our waitress today was Xenia was very nice and friendly. She took very good care of us, she had a nice smile on her face. Overall I like this place and as long as the food is good and I will keep coming here. Service has always been ok, nothing big enough to complain, the comments I made about cold service and not very friendly it's only because I think this restaurant it's awesome and I'm hoping someone from management sees my review and try to make this place even better! If you know what a Rubin sandwich is, then you need to try theirs, and the best French fries in Oxnard. COVID 19 has made restaurants awkward and this is no exception, so other than a bench near a crosswalk almost in front of the restaurant, it's all takeout. For dinner, I'm having the other half of the Rubin and you should be jealous. read more

We've been coming to BGs for several years now. The breakfast was reliably delicious, served hot by a team that were customer service oriented. This has all changed. We were here last week and were shocked at the horrible breakfast. Our food sat on the counter getting cold while our server took a long break. When it finally came, my cheese omelette came without the cheese... We thought this was a one-off issue and returned today for breakfast. The place was mostly empty and we were looking forward to a great breakfast. I ordered a cheese omelette and once again... Wait for it... It came without cheese!! I sent it back to get the cheese. My husband ordered sausage and eggs. The sausage was dry and hard... Back it went... This is the first time in over 30 years together that we've both sent our food back to the kitchen... Very sad indeed. I hope the management pays attention and improves things. This place is an Oxnard institution and it would be sad to see it go. read more

I added a side biscuit and gravy just to try. The gravy is peppery and better than average but the biscuit was fluffy big and top notch. So we wanted to get a late breakfast about 10:30 am before heading to the nearby the Plaza 16 Theater to see the new Star Wars movie with 4 others. We remembered how good the food was at BG's on last visit and decided to drop by. Not disappointed. I had the nopalitos scramble (prickly pear cactus strips and scrambled eggs) and it was 100% authentic. The odd thing was the cafe was almost completely full at 10:30am, which really surprised us. First time and last time we will be here. Sat right away for b fast. Good service so far. drinks taken and brought. Ordered eggs benedict and the home potatoes. Husband ordered chix fried steak and scrambled eggs with a biscuit and gravy. Waiting..........................long time - food came after we over heard the waitress say "how about that benedict"? Food arrives and the benedict sauce is curdled and cold. The sauce had no flavor, not butter, not lemon, not egg. Just no flavor at all - until I put lemon juice and tobasco on it, then it was a little more palatable. The potatoes were a greasy joke. slapped on the plate with no seasoning and tons of grease. they were cold too. Husbands scrambled eggs full of NO flavor and completely watered down. The gravy on the fried steak was flavorless and chunky, very strange. I am not the only one who can possibly feel as if this is a GREAT place to eat. It was terrible - and the ticket was 46 with tip. The only good thing was the salsa that I asked for. Who every is making that keep it up. Sorry but we won't be going back to this place anytime soon.
