The prices were absolutely fantastic and the staff was so wonderful. A must stop when you're in the area. We were doing a driving tour on our way to Voyageurs and sooooo many people suggested Betty's Pies. Luckily the wait wasn't too long, but I know it can get a little long on weekends. Luckily there are plenty of places to wait outside, with all the gorgeous scenery. We waited about 30 minutes, but it was worth it! I was excited to see vegetarian and gluten free options. Our waitress was very friendly and made some great suggestions. I went for the gluten free "backpacker" veggie burger and I have to say, it was maybe one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had. So much yum! We did the walk-up line for some to-go pie slices. They also had some daily specials, a food menu, and indoor restaurant but we chose to get our slices and sit out on their picnic benches. The caramel apple pie... heavenly. I could eat the crumble topping by the jar full. I wish we had brought a slice home to stick in the microwave and eat warm. The Butterfinger cream pie was surprisingly not overly sweet. A Minnesota destination! The parking lot is tricky but they expanded it. During the busy summer months, the pie service line is outdoors. Some picnic tables and port o potties. We also noticed from our last visit ( a couple of years ago) they improved the road situation so now there's a dedicated left turn lane into Betty's. They have a great selection of cream pies. Good service and there's a small line outside for takeout, and the pasty was YUGE, I figure it must be good and commanding a 4 star. But it goes downhill from there. The whole thing was flavorless, there wasn't any gravy in there, just dry, big chunks of potato and beef. Maybe they expected people to use those cold slaw (was also flavorless and chewy) and sauce? The crust was dry and hard in the cream pie, but the filling was good. I'd probably stick to the regular non cream pies since those can be heated up to make the crust softer. This place was a "must go" spot all over TikTok so we had to go! After a couple hikes in the morning at the nearby state parks along the lake, we stopped at Betty's Pies. We were starving and were seated so quickly! The takeout orders are taken outside in order to avoid foot traffic inside. I got the first thing I saw on the menu, which was the Isle Royale Chicken Pesto Sandwich and my boyfriend got the Beargrease burger. The pesto sandwich was a delicious chicken breast sandwich on a ciabatta bread, slathered in pesto aioli, banana peppers, and feta cheese. I subbed the fries for onion rings. The Beargrease burger was incredibly flavorful, topped with chipotle mayo, pepper jack, and grilled onions and it came with fries as well. And they have the best fries, in my opinion, which are the crispy straight fries. Our waitress was sweet and answered all of our questions. People raved about this place, and when we found out we were taking a trip to the North Shore, we knew we had to stop. The wait was about 40 minutes at noon on a Thursday, but the amazing hostess at the check-in desk was telling jokes the whole time. She was hilarious, and it made our wait really quick and enjoyable. I am not a pie expert, but I am not sure why people are such harsh critics of this place?! The pie was delicious!! We ordered the Great Lakes pie and the key lime pie. The crust on both was perfect and the berries in the Great Lakes were perfectly sweet. I normally don't enjoy a key lime, but it was not too sour and had a wonderful creamy taste. Some were having a late lunch. Others, like us, pie and a hot beverage. You could order whole pies or pies by the individual slice. Both baked and cream pies were available, and pie varieties were flashing on screens around the dining room. They were not listed in the lunch menu. I selected an old favorite -- strawberry rhubarb with whipped cream -- to go with a cup of tea. My husband decided upon a slice of Great Lakes Crunch pie with an oatmeal-brown sugar crumb topping to go with his coffee. The waitress explained to us that his pie would include 5 fruits - strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, apples, and rhubarb -- representing the 5 Great Lakes. Cool. Overall, our experience at the restaurant was good and we would return. The pies were very good. The restaurant was cozy and clean. The waitress was friendly. Parking was free. that said, we down-rated our overall rating for a few reasons. First, we felt that the prices were somewhat high. Each of our pie slices were $5.25 each, and our coffee/tea were $2.75 each, bringing our total to over $17 even before tip. We also weren't sure what our bill would be until it arrived as the flashing menu stating that whole pies were priced "starting at" $20 while individual slices started at $5.25. The waitress had also offered whipped creAm or pie cream to top the pies but we didn't know what the the add-on charges would be for either. Finally, we found it difficult to know the breadth of available pie options by watching the changing screens. This is a tourist trap at its finest. Nothing tasted homemade though thats the vibe they give. We had the hot beef which was awful. No flavor, gravy was terrible, coleslaw terrible as well. We also had the hot turkey which wasn't any better. Same bland taste. Quality was bad for both beef and turkey. You could tell the gravy and mashed potatoes came from a dry mix and water was added. Club sanwhich was fine, I've certainly had better. Onion rings were ok. Pie was nothing spectacular. They weren't super sweet which was a plus. Coconut creme was fine as was French blueberry creme though the blueberry topping was clearly from a bucket. Key lime pie was the worst, tasted nothing of lime and no whipped cream topping. They are making a killing on these pies as the slices start at $5.25 and we asked and apparently during the summer they sell 800 pies a day on average.
