We always have a pleasant experience staying here. There are great amenities at all of their properties, and have very friendly staff. Most recently we stayed at the Lodge and really appreciated their kids pool. Our toddler had a lot of fun splashing in there! read more

One thing led to another, and we had to cancel our camping plans and opt for lodging. This was our first time not tenting on the north shores, and we actually prefer tenting because we've stayed at some pretty lousy places... The reviews on yelp were not promising and we were expecting the experience people warned us about. That said, perhaps folks had bad experiences, but I can confidently say they've -never- stayed at a "ghetto" hotel. Actually, we enjoyed the place so much, we will actually plan to stay here next year. If you want really fancy or the smell of new carpet, look into their "lake homes" or condos. The lodge itself is older, but we arrived on Friday and the place was in tip-top shape regarding cleanliness. Fires were burning at all 3 fire pits on the property, complimentary cold lemonade, sweet tea, coffee, and popcorn were set out in the lobby while a charming indoor fireplace and leather seating was an inviting place to kick your feet up. TREK bikes were out front ready for riders, and people were swimming in both pools, and utilizing both hottubs. The more adventurous cold plunged between the lake and hot tub (you do have to jog a distance to get there, but heart healthy). To be honest, you could spend the day at the resort and be satisfied without leaving the property. Do be prepared that the lodge is older, but charming because of it. It's not stiff and sterile. The bedding was clean & in excellent shape, including pillows. outdated bathrooms, but we are campers and any plumbing is a luxury, never a complaint!! also be aware that pets can lodge here in part of the building. I'm actually not fond of pets in hotels and I am really sensitive to dog smells. However, some people might find this a perk. we stayed in pet-free lodging, but I still caught myself hyper paranoid about pet smells. This was the only factor that I personally found displeasing about the place. small suggestions: -love the complimentary drink station-- would be great if there were some tea options (earl grey bags) for the hot water. Though the cider packets were a delight for the drizzly weather. Would also be nice in liquid coffee creamer was available instead of just powdered. -would be great if there was a water bottle fill station in lobby/ice room. Booked Superior Shores Burlington Bay suite expecting a comfortable, fully equipped kitchen for our group over four days. What we got was a frustrating experience with basic amenities either missing, broken, or filthy - and staff did nothing to fix it despite complaints. The furnished kitchen was a joke. Only three forks for a six-person setup? We had to eat with spoons or improvise. No drip coffee maker, even though we confirmed one with staff before arrival - they just shrugged it off. We were provided just two coffee pods for three people over four days; the rest of our mornings were on our own with instant coffee we bought at a nearby grocery store. The resort restaurant is a mile away with no connecting path. The jacuzzi had inadequate hot water for half our stay, making it unusable most of the time. Kitchen lighting was abysmal: half the lights did not work, including those above the stove, so cooking felt like groping in the dark. No dishwasher cleaning powder meant they expect guests to hand wash everything. The cookware? Two worn-out skillets with no covers, plus filthy oven and a grimy electric grill on the patio caked in old residue. The stovetop heating elements were shot, warped, and barely heating up. Other issues piled on: main ice machine broken, hallway closet doors off their tracks, and a toaster full of someone else's crumbs. The floors were visibly dirty throughout, adding to the unclean vibe. We reported problems to staff, but zero timely resolutions - no replacements, no apologies with fixes, just excuses. This "suite" and entire facility felt neglected and overpriced. Avoid unless you enjoy camping in a resort. 1/5 stars. read more

I agree with other reviewers that this hotel needs some improvements to compete with other resorts in the area. It appears that they have done some superficial remodeling, but it still needs some work. The pool and hot tub need to be redone. There is a chipped mural on the wall that looks like it dates back to the 1960s. When I was checking out or the hotel, I had to wait in line because there were three customers complaining about problems with their room and service. Apparently there hasn't been a manager on duty all week. At the height of tourism season in July? There are some nice touches like the Nespresso machine in the room and complimentary chocolates. They also have bonfires at night with complimentary s'mores. The restaurant was way too expensive for a family resort area. read more

Everything's broken. Nothing works. Had to take another room with no microwave because our room wasn't ready. Both hot tubs broken. No towels at the pool. Key wouldn't work. Had to bang on the door to get back in. Did you know our phone could disable the key. I didnt. Did you know you have to request the outdoor fireplace to be turned on. I didn't. They closed the outdoor pool at 10. Last year it was open till 11 for adults and then the hottub worked and the fireplace was lit. How inviting. Not this year. I can't believe we had to pay for this. The place is a dump! It needs a major remodel and upgrade. We were checked in without having the room cleaned! There were hair and debris in the bedding, the sink and countertops. The hallways were dingy and stinky. At $275 per night we expected a little more! The management is just as awful. We made a reservation online the day of check in but after checking in we were told there was not going to be any water on our second day of stay. We still were not allowed to check out the next day because of their cancellation restrictions. Overall it was a terrible experience, dampening our vacation to the North Shore. We unfortunately dined here for date night last night. I'm so sad we wasted our money. Rhubarb strawberry crisp: $11 for woody rhubarb and supplier-brand strawberries in juice, with crumble and whipped cream. Cesar salad: $20 for straight spring mix with a little dressing, little shreds of "parm", and 4 shrimps (don't bother with the Cajun seasoning, it was NOT Cajun nor tasty). My partner got the $20 bistro provolone and could only taste the bitter butter oil they used to toast the bun. It was so salty and bitter. We tipped because it's not the servers fault but we will NOT be back. So sad. read more

We came to celebrate our Anniversary. First for $511. a night you would think they would have Breakfast, but they don't even have Coffee in the Lobby. Then the Toilet quit flushing. Then I went to make coffee in the and the Kitchen Faucet leaked so bad it flooded the counter top and my Cell Phone. They worked on them for 3 1/2 hours and the Toilet is still not fixed. The Management then called and said the Boiler was going out and we were going to lose hot water so they wanted to move us. I told them that we are horriblely disappointed and would like a discount for our troubles and having to move. They told me that they couldn't help Building problem and they can't do anything for us. I give this place two stars. One earned by the wonderful staff and one earned for the beautiful setting. I have many complaints, but none directed at the staff. They are in serious need of update. Here are my list of complaints (May 2024): Carpet loose in some places. Parking lot in poor shape with potholes. Very uncomfortable bed which seemed to sag. Caulking coming loose in shower. It's Loud! Can hear every step from the people on third floor. No housekeeping staff to be found. Never cleaned our room during our stay. Grounds are beautiful especially by the lake, but unkept They say "spa", but when I asked, they said they had a sauna and hot tub, so "spa like" Restaurant on premises, but very pricey. We arrived at 3pm, hoping to check in early. Unfortunately our room was not ready. No problem. We went down to the lake and enjoyed the scenery. We came back to the front desk at 4pm, which is listed as the check in time policy on my reservation confirmation. Again, I was told my room was not ready and they couldn't guarantee a time. It could be up to 2 hours. I asked if check in time was 4 and was told check in begins at four. Okay. It's now 4:45 and I've been waiting in the lobby for my text notification that my room was ready. Guess what. I didn't get one. Now I'm standing in line behind 10 people to find out if my room is ready. I'm hopeful that this will be the worst part of my experience here, but am setting my expectations realistically. The front desk guy is politely described as surly. His attitude tells me his last job was at a small town DMV. In his defense, not one employee has come to the desk to help him. We can keep blaming labor shortages but where's resort management? I'm 100% sure this is my first and last stay at the Less Than Superior Shores. Go anywhere else for your North Shore vacation. Lots of options up here. read more

Can I rate 0 stars?? Undisclosed renovations. No room placard. Unhelpful manager. Sign said room was to the left, but no room with the correct number existed. To the right (pictured) was a construction zone and no room numbers. Over $400 per night per room. There's no way our room was down there, right? When we called the front desk to try to find our room, they transferred to guest services manager. Tim said, "The placard may have fallen, but if you can't find it I can send someone to re-hang it." Rude much? I went to a different floor to see the layout and figured it out on my own. The next day the keys were deactivated?? When we called they told us we needed to go back to the front desk (1 mile away from our building) and get new keys or that it would be an unknown period of time before someone could drop off new keys. When we asked how this accommodation could be made right for our poor experiences we were offered no compensation and told, "we sell rooms, not the hallways. Sorry." Would NOT recommend due to hospitality. read more

My partner & I made a last min decision to go stay in Two Harbors for a couple of nights during the holidays. We arrived around 7pm to check-in. When we walked through the door of our room I was immediately suspicious when I saw soap bottles knocked over at the sink & receipts on the carpet. Then looked up and I saw the bed was unmade... yeah, that was where it crossed the line. We called the front desk and staff told us to stay put until they could get us another room. As I waited, I saw a painting on the wall that was askew & tried not to think about what the previous occupants did to make that happen, ha. The staff person was nice about it though & we got a room w/ a lakeside view fairly quickly. PROS: - Loc right on the lake was spot on. They have their own beach access! I liked waking up to the lake view and going out there. There were a lot of couples with dogs staying here that took advantage of that. - They have a pool & hottub open late at night. The downside is that the whole hotel smells strongly of chlorine though. CONS: - Cleanliness was not the best. Even in our new room, we laughed when we found a wine glass under the bed. The comforter and carpet looked old & my dust allergies went into overload. - The bed wasn't comfortable. It had no firmness, the pillows were airy mush, and the comforter was the kind that is thin & scratchy on 1-side. It did not feel luxurious & I didn't sleep well. - There weren't any food options at the hotel bar on a Thu night (mistakenly assumed there would be) which meant we needed to go out into a snow storm to get food. TIPS: - Look for a deal to stay here on Orbitz, Groupon, etc. If I had paid the normal price of $170+ per night, I'd be way more disappointed. - Best places to eat around here are Rustic Inn & Cedar Coffee Company. - There are many state parks to explore in the area! It's a great opportunity to fully embrace what makes northern MN the best! Overall, the beach access & hot tub in room were cool but the feel of the hotel & uncomfortable bed means I probably won't stay here again. You've got to appreciate the amount of effort that went into the decor though to give it a northern MN woodsy feel. I mean the sleeping stuffed black bear in the stairwell pretty much made staying here worth it (nervous laughter)! read more

This place holds a special place in my heart. Stayed here during my first visit to Lake Superior and years later and got engaged during this trip. From what I could see mostly clean except a small area of mold in bathroom shower. Whirlpool in room was spacious and relaxing. Fire pits out front and on shore with wood already split. Provided fresh cider in lobby during the day. Pet friendly was a plus for us too! read more

I have visited Superior Shores for over 20 years. The new owners have completely dismantled the local, quaint, up north feel for their property and have turned it into a stale, corporate feeling nightmare. Minneapolis prices for northern woods accommodations. Nothing has been added to improve the property or accommodations, yet the prices are nearly doubled what they were under prior ownership. I am profoundly disappointed with the money hustling here. Superior Shores has surely lost its luster. read more

I should have read other reviews before staying here. We attempted to check in at regular check in time with our three year old. Room was not ready, no ETA. Room was not ready until 6. The front desk staff had no plan (enjoy a meal on us! can we take your bags?) and instead were openly rude to the huge line of people waiting to get their rooms. One patron was unhappy and told a staff member that he was going to post a negative review. The employee responded that he was being "petty." They were rude and disorganized. Then, when we got to our floor, there was no carpet in the hallway and the lights didn't seem to be functioning. Nothing about renovations was disclosed anywhere when we booked. Although a cute and functional resort right near the water, we had a few issues while staying there recently: 1. First and foremost, they are not allowing takeout from their restaurant at any time. Only dining in is allowed, which seems extremely irresponsible given the pandemic.  This is our top complaint. 2. The grills on the patio are not clean. Ours caught on fire while cooking steaks and took almost 10 minutes to go out as the grease traps were full and dirty. 3.  We had to start the bonfire ourselves at the fire pit. The resort staff never came to do it, even after we called and they told us to expect someone within 45 minutes. read more

This visit did not live up to my usual excellent experiences at Superior Shores. We waited two hours beyond the designated check-in for our room to be ready. The dishwasher didn't work and was filled with dirty dishes from the last guest. The fireplace didn't work, either. One T.V. was damaged, giving half a picture. The price was pretty steep for a room that needed some major repairs. I hope they can recover from the shortage of help exacerbating these issues. read more

2.5 stars. We stayed three nights at the Burlington Bay lake homes (bldg 6). The lack of WiFi and low quality linen and mattress are what the low rating is for. I had a little work that I had to do and had to go to the public library due to the very limited Internet access in Two Harbors. The hotel has WiFi, but it would not connect to the Internet. We contacted the front desk and were informed that only the day manager could reset the connection. It never worked. The bedding and bed are not good. The old style tube TV was a disappointed find for a 'resort'. The pool and whirlpool facility at Burlington Bay was very nice, we just didn't use them. Great views if the lake from all the rooms in this bldg. the fridge, microwave, coffee pot, hair dryer and whirlpool tub were all in good shape and we used all of them. Overall, wouldn't return. Only a desk chair in the room. No where to relax in the room other than the bed. We were here in early October and the weather was cool and rainy, so we didn't do all the things we wanted to do outside, so spent a bit of time in the room. read more

We arrived during construction, however we are on the third floor so we did not hear much. From check in to check out out five night stay here has been wonderful. The Queen size ,hot tub suite has been pretty awesome. The room was clean and spacious. The kitchen was huge and had pots and pans like we needed. However we though an option to add basics to the room for an upcharge may be a good idea, we would pay to have the basics stocked in the room. The view of our room is over the pool and with covid it is closed so it has been quiet. We love the beach area because it is so spacious and clean. The resturant has amazing food, in fact the best meals we have had have been from here and not in town. Lol. We have to make this our yearly trip and place to stay... it is like a home away from home. Very diverse atmosphere and that was very refreshing. read more

A plain double bed room for 198 + 50 in taxes and fees went to go sledding, room was ready but needed to be inspected, all though it seemed like there was a place we could change into our gear, they wouldn't let us, had to change in the parking lot, after sledding when we returned we're hungry THE RESTAURANT WAS CLOSED on a Friday night! website said it was open, but no one said a thing to us. We ended up booking here from a deal we found on Groupon. Here is my takeaway STAFF - Ever heard the saying "Minnesota Friendly"? The employees show just that! They were incredibly nice and helpful. When we asked where we might be able to rent a kayake for the afternoon, they gave us good recommendations of some nearby places. LOCATION - Beautiful! Our room was literally only a 1 min walk to the shore and our room had the perfect view of Lake Superior. They also have cabins you can rent for big parties. AMENITIES - They have multiple built in fire pits along the shore for guests to utilize. Just supply your own wood! The hotel also offers an indoor and outside hot tub that was killer! Plus a heated pool? Score! The downside? You can tell it's an older building and some features seem a little dingy. Bed is a bit stiff and they didn't have extra blankets on hand. Overall, I would probably return if there was another Groupon deal or discount. read more

Just don't do it. Waited over 5 hours past check in time (until 9pm) for our room before deciding to cancel the reservation with no sense of empathy from the staff. No discount on the room either. Hard pass. I was just thankful I wasn't the couple with the 4 month old in the same boat as us, again the staff didn't care about any of the many groups still waiting to have a clean room ready And responding to the establishment saying we requested an early check in, no we did not. Check in on their site is at 4 pm. Showed up at 5:30 and were told it's not ready. Ok so came back at 7:30pm after getting dinner, still the same response with no estimate of when it would be ready. Just before 9pm we decided it wasn't worth waiting anymore and canceled our reservation. Don't think trying to check in before 9pm is considered an "early check in". Sounds like they shouldn't have booked that many rooms as we were one of many many groups without a room at 9pm on the day of our reservation. We also heard staff telling the parents of a 4 month old around 8:30pm they couldn't guarantee they get in their room tonight. Just utterly pathetic, heartless, and uncaring. read more

Hard to make a reservation. Had to call us back after we tried to book our dates. Have never experienced that before trying to book a reservation. We stayed 2 days. No housekeeping what so ever for our second day. No towels picked up from previous night. I requested room cleaning early on the morning of our second day. Left in the morning to see sites ànd returned at 2:30 in the afternoon no dirty towels picked up or sheets changed. Called desk they said they were short staffed.i stated after paying $350 a night our room should be cleaned and new towels said they would have towels by 4pm. Left for supper after 5pm still no towels. Returned to hotel at 7pm dirty towels still on floor and sack left on floor in room with new towels. The three nights that we've stayed here, have included ZERO house keeping and no fresh towels, despite our asking every morning; room was filthy at check in. Absolutely awful place. I flew in from Seattle and spent a ton of time driving up to visit my family and rent snowmobiles for the day. When I say this company was horrible and their customer service even worse. We got their at 8 am to start riding. The first problem is that they do not supply adequate helmets. Their website states that helmets will be supplied leaving us thinking that we have nothing to worry about and it will all be taken care of. That was not the case no helmets fit and the employee stood in the closet looking at the same helmets for over 30 minutes not knowing what to do. We tried finding a manger or employee that would actually be able to help and no one on the property could. They finally gave their boss Tim Leroyer a call at close to 10am. From there we drove down to Duluth and bought a helmet that fit and would work and got back to the place. Tim called and said that we could rent the sleds from 1pm-9pm and we thought the troubles were over from there. But oh were we wrong. These were 2022 Polaris snowmobiles and they were the worst machine that I have ever rode in my life. The employee stated that they had to pick up another person who's sled had overheated that very day. That made us skeptical but we took them out anyway hoping to turn the day around and enjoy riding. That didn't last long as when riding the machines would not cool down and overheated/broke down over 8 times. We were in contact with the snowmobile rental and front desk to find a way to get the machines back in one piece and not on fire. It took forever getting the sleds back as we could only get a few miles down the road before having to shut them off, shovel snow on them and wait. We were disappointed to find that Tim lied about what time he would be at the resort as he had left two hours before we got there which was four hours before the time he provided us. We were exhausted and upset from the day so we left and planned on calling him the next morning. I am so disappointed that no call has been returned and multiple calls have been ignored since. I have continued to try and get in contact to resolve the awful experience and have been met with avoidance and disrespect. If the only thing you get from this review is that you deserve a company that will care about you and provide a great experience. This one is not it. read more

My opinion is they are overpriced for the rooms. We came on June 7th. We thought we had booked a lakeside room with a balcony but actually booked one without a balcony. It was on the first floor and the lake view was hidden by small brush trees in front of the window. At least we were able to switch to a third floor room for the same price so we could see the lake from the room. But it cost about $600 for two nights. Had we decided to upgrade to a lake side room with a balcony it would have been $800 for two nights. We declined. read more

*This review is based off their customer service only* I have never stayed at this resort, but I called them today because my Sister and Brother in law checked in today for a 3 night get away. They are in much need of a little vaca and this resort is a go to for them. I wanted to do something special for them but I reside in AZ, soooooooo there are quite a few miles between us. When I called Herb (like Erb but with an "H" his words, not mine) answered the phone. I let him know my sister and brother in law would be checking in today and I want to do something special for them. I originally wanted to send dessert, flowers or wine to their room. Herb let me know they don't have room service but they do have an onsite restaurant so what about a gift card? Brilliant!!! They gotta eat right? He assured me he'd take care of getting it to my sister. He transferred me to the restaurant and the woman who answered the phone was soooooo sweet and sooooooo helpful. I let her know the situation and she was so beyond willing and wanting to help. I got the giftcard purchased and she even offered to write a little note. I was and still am so impressed with the amount of care they all showed for my sister and getting the gift card to her. About an hour after I hung up with them, my sister called me ECSTATIC! I'd call that Mission Accomplished! Thank you Herb and "Lady"(I am so sorry I didn't catch your name) for making my Sister and Brother in Laws stay a bit more special for them. As I said, I have not had the pleasure of staying at this resort, but I will now make it a point to try and get out that way next time I am home visiting friends and family. I was very disappointed with the following We were charged for two days . We only had one full day of residence. .the cost for one day was $ 700. The accommodation was in poor condition.One board in the on the entrance projected out and was a tripping hazard. The walkways were shabby The furnishings were blah. Our overpriced room was not ready until past 9pm. the staff was rude, unable or unwilling to even speculate on when our room was to be ready when we arrived at 4pm. The only person that apologized was the underage person at the attached restaurant serving beer. Front desk should be ashamed of themselves. No maid service. A shame that it is so bad as the location could be really cool. All we get was excuses that they are short help. My family and I rented one of the larger rooms at Superior Shores - Burlington, in their Up North Lodge. While the room was spacious and had a nice view, the building and grounds seems to be outdated. The tiles around the hot tub and pool area are cracked and loose, which didn't seem safe for our kids to be playing around. The management is poor, and during the 2nd night of our stay we were told to pack up and leave the property for "having more than 10 people in our room" and "alcohol by the pool". Our issue with this, is that the additional people visiting our room ALSO rented their own rooms, the room neighboring ours had more than 10 people in it as well, and other parties were drinking in the pool area as well (there is no sign saying no alcohol, just no glass). The manager was nice to our face, but called the cops 5 minutes later and we were told we had 45 minutes to pack up (an entire lodge mind you), and leave. They didn't care that our children were sleeping, and that most of the adults were over the legal limit to be driving. Other parties making noise in the pool area were not kicked out of their rooms, but we were. They do not treat all guests equally. The cops even disagreed with the actions of the manager. We were nothing but respectful, and left the lodge as spotless as possible. With 45 minutes we could have easily left the place a disaster, but why should their shitty management decisions be put on their housekeepers. I would not recommend a stay here. read more

I stumbled upon this resort looking at a website for The North Shore. It's a cute lodge and the staff is so nice and accommodating!! It's not perfect and could use some updating, but you're in God's country with so much to do!! Why are you worried about the room being perfect?!?! You're only gonna sleep there!! WOW I'VE NEVER UPDATED A REVIEW BEFORE BUT FELT I NEED TO - we left 3 nice shirts in a dry cleaning bag in our room. Called back this weekend and again today to get help finding/returning them. The staff (2 different gals) could not have been ruder - super offended that I called and both basically said if they get turned in we'll call you. I'll pursue the issue with Mgt but wow talk about lousy customer service - I asked 'so I should just give up?' and she said 'well I'm not going to bother our current guests' - uh, how about ask housekeeping to open the closet and see if there's a dry cleaning bag with 3 shirts and my name on a tag? We stayed 3 nights at SSR and found it to be a great place for 1st time North Shore visitors. Staff was friendly and extremely helpful about the area, the accommodations, etc. The room was OK (not great to be honest but definitely not gross) but we were there to be outside enjoying the area so we spent very little time in the room. The location was super - great little rocky beach behind the main hotel and the staff lit campfires every night on the beach for s'mores, etc. I thought they should have also had kayaks and SUPs to rent or use in the little cove but they don't so we went up the road and found them elsewhere. Our otherwise nice stay was totally spoiled by the lack of follow up and the rude front desk people who refused to help us after we left will keep us from recommending or staying there again. read more

Where do I start; check in was at 4 and there were other people that waited for an hour and a half or longer so I guess I should consider myself lucky. The hotel was less than stellar, We paid a premium price for a motel 6 level motel. Our room on beautiful Lake Superior looked out onto the top of a flat garage and faced the woods. You'd never know you were on a lake. The room was shabby, the carpet worn and dusty, the hallways were dingy and dark, the toilet was so close to the wall, I hit my knees when I sat down. The window had no screen so we couldn't have it open without letting bugs in. The air conditioner only worked for 5 minutes and then shut off. We had to turn it off and on many times to get it to start up again, but then 5 minutes later it shut off. There is no continental breakfast available. You can only order room service the night before and have it delivered to your room with no other choices, not even a cup of coffee. Also no daily maid service. The only restaurant that was available had a menu that you would expect in some upscale hotel not this rundown resort. The bar was closed for remodeling so we could not sit on the deck in the back facing the lake. The price is definitely not worth what you get. Don't waste your time on this one. read more

My daughter and I stayed at Superior Shores over MEA. We had to check out early due to a bout of the stomach flu. They were horrible and actually double charged us. I told them we were leaving early due to illness and they said I owed $200+ even though I had prepaid for everything. After talking to the manager at length, she agreed to let it go with the full amount I had already paid. Then, 3 days later they charged me an additional $212 because I didn't go down to the front desk the day after I checked out. They are messed up. I will NEVER ever stay there again. EVER.
