We arrived at 3pm, hoping to check in early. Unfortunately our room was not ready. No problem. We went down to the lake and enjoyed the scenery. We came back to the front desk at 4pm, which is listed as the check in time policy on my reservation confirmation. Again, I was told my room was not ready and they couldn't guarantee a time. It could be up to 2 hours. I asked if check in time was 4 and was told check in begins at four. Okay. It's now 4:45 and I've been waiting in the lobby for my text notification that my room was ready. Guess what. I didn't get one. Now I'm standing in line behind 10 people to find out if my room is ready. I'm hopeful that this will be the worst part of my experience here, but am setting my expectations realistically. The front desk guy is politely described as surly. His attitude tells me his last job was at a small town DMV. In his defense, not one employee has come to the desk to help him. We can keep blaming labor shortages but where's resort management? I'm 100% sure this is my first and last stay at the Less Than Superior Shores. Go anywhere else for your North Shore vacation. Lots of options up here.

Nice location, but poorly managed. Not what you would expect for a premium price. Bed is thin and you can feel the coils. Premium features such as USB ports, robes, breakfast are advertised but absent. Resort fee? For what? No surprise that yelp reviews are removed from Apple Maps and replaced with booking.com, which gives no star ratings. Written reviews are no better. Should've done the Airbnb. Oh yeah, staying at the Burlington Shores part of the resort, Maps calls it a bed and breakfast. This place does neither well.

    Undisclosed renovations

Can I rate 0 stars?? Undisclosed renovations. No room placard. Unhelpful manager. Sign said room was to the left, but no room with the correct number existed. To the right (pictured) was a construction zone and no room numbers. Over $400 per night per room. There's no way our room was down there, right? When we called the front desk to try to find our room, they transferred to guest services manager. Tim said, "The placard may have fallen, but if you can't find it I can send someone to re-hang it." Rude much? I went to a different floor to see the layout and figured it out on my own. The next day the keys were deactivated?? When we called they told us we needed to go back to the front desk (1 mile away from our building) and get new keys or that it would be an unknown period of time before someone could drop off new keys. When we asked how this accommodation could be made right for our poor experiences we were offered no compensation and told, "we sell rooms, not the hallways. Sorry." Would NOT recommend due to hospitality.

My partner & I made a last min decision to go stay in Two Harbors for a couple of nights during the holidays. We arrived around 7pm to check-in. When we walked through the door of our room I was immediately suspicious when I saw soap bottles knocked over at the sink & receipts on the carpet. Then looked up and I saw the bed was unmade... yeah, that was where it crossed the line. We called the front desk and staff told us to stay put until they could get us another room. As I waited, I saw a painting on the wall that was askew & tried not to think about what the previous occupants did to make that happen, ha. The staff person was nice about it though & we got a room w/ a lakeside view fairly quickly. PROS: - Loc right on the lake was spot on. They have their own beach access! I liked waking up to the lake view and going out there. There were a lot of couples with dogs staying here that took advantage of that. - They have a pool & hottub open late at night. The downside is that the whole hotel smells strongly of chlorine though. CONS: - Cleanliness was not the best. Even in our new room, we laughed when we found a wine glass under the bed. The comforter and carpet looked old & my dust allergies went into overload. - The bed wasn't comfortable. It had no firmness, the pillows were airy mush, and the comforter was the kind that is thin & scratchy on 1-side. It did not feel luxurious & I didn't sleep well. - There weren't any food options at the hotel bar on a Thu night (mistakenly assumed there would be) which meant we needed to go out into a snow storm to get food. TIPS: - Look for a deal to stay here on Orbitz, Groupon, etc. If I had paid the normal price of $170+ per night, I'd be way more disappointed. - Best places to eat around here are Rustic Inn & Cedar Coffee Company. - There are many state parks to explore in the area! It's a great opportunity to fully embrace what makes northern MN the best! Overall, the beach access & hot tub in room were cool but the feel of the hotel & uncomfortable bed means I probably won't stay here again. You've got to appreciate the amount of effort that went into the decor though to give it a northern MN woodsy feel. I mean the sleeping stuffed black bear in the stairwell pretty much made staying here worth it (nervous laughter)!

Here is the 'lake view' we received. Look hard and its out there . . .

This Inn sparkles with cleanliness! I notice details like baseboards, corners and shelves. Each railcar is decorated in a different theme. We stayed in the newly appointed Lighthouse Room. The lamps were shaped like lighthouses, the room was tastefully decorated with Lighthouse pictures and memorabilia, and the hallway that connects each railcar was built reminiscent of a rail yard and train station. When I called to make the reservation. I actually spoke with one of the owners. Cindy. She was personable and friendly. She is the epitome of a fantastic bed& breakfast-type Innkeeper. We met her at the Inn and she was funny and very welcoming. The food was good. They had your typical fare offered at most hotels. The only reason they didn't get a 5 star rating from me is I feel like they could develop a "trademark item" with their breakfast to go with the theme as well. The location is perfect for a quiet weekend or even a Northshore vacation. It's nestled in the wilderness and just a very short ride to Lake Superior. I highly recommend this Inn if you would like to relive some locomotive history!

It's just so much fun to stay here and bonus- you can watch local wildlife right from your window. Rooms were clean, and the managers offer a plethora of games and movies you can borrow- which is just fun! I returned from hiking up the North Shore my first (and only) night, ready to fall asleep and get up early the next morning for sunrise pics at Split Rock. The walls are thin, the floors creak, and doors slam shut. So from 8-around 1030, it was so noisy, then after that, I could hear conversations from the adjoining rooms. They weren't being "loud" the walls were just that thin. The bed was not very comfy. The sheets were scratchy. There was a single washcloth tucked up into the shower curtain ... clean? Not clean? I dunno. It stayed there. The access to parking coming from the North is a nightmare as the turning lane is also used by those accessing the left turn light and the lot is full of deep potholes that are hard to avoid. The driveway is also shared by McDonalds so it makes for a busy place. Customer service was good. Staff were friendly and courteous. Overall, just not worth the cost. Other places further up the North Shore were comparable in price, had more amenities, and were closer to many of the destinations.

The jacuzzi tub was so nice after my morning workouts. The only small complaints I'd have is how hot the upstairs got especially the loft. Most of the windows did not open and only 1 of the 3 box fans worked. Also the dishwasher tended to make my dishes taste funny and smell like dirty dish rag. It may have been the all natural detergent they had. But over all loved it!!!! I also loved that we weren't bothered which is something that usually bugs me. The office answered promptly when I did have questions. They also allowed us to check in very late by placing our keys and such in a secure area.

Don't expect a/c, but, fans are supplied. 400 dollars a night I think deserves alittle more of these type of things. Maybe some of the other units are better as they are owned privately. This unit has real promise if they would spend a few bucks as they expect us to. Great location, access to the lake is easy, all in all not sure I'll be back at prime time, but you check it out for yourself, I'd recommend it at a lower price since up to 8 people can stay. The other plus is it is dog friendly. One caveat, bring a credit card, it's the only form of payment accepted. You might be up a creek without it. Or pack a tent. The staff is very friendly and overall the unit is clean. I would give 3 1/2 stars actually but for above mentioned items could be a 5!
