I would give them zero stars if I could. Can't believe the poor customer service. Technician came out over a month ago - diagnosed a problem and charged me - said they would call with estimate. They never called. I called THREE times and was told I would be called back. No return call. I just called and asked for a manager and after some time on hold they hung up on me. Now they are not answering my calls at all. I want my "diagnostic fee" refunded! Great customer service from beginning to end. The lady who answered the phone and made the appointment for me was helpful, offered options and said someone could come out the next day! Marc came to fix our dishwasher and he was friendly, loved my dog, and fixed the dishwasher in minutes. He was caring and asked if I wanted to learn about cleaning the filter, etc...to which I replied - absolutely! It was the best experience I've had with an experienced technician in my home. They scheduled me a week out to look at my washer/dryer and i took time off work to be able to meet them in the time window they set 2-4pm, they called me at 3:30 saying they wouldn't be able to make it. I called them to check my refrigerator which I thought was failing. They told me that the refrigeration portion had failed and the freezer was registering at 30 degrees and was next. They told me that I needed a $2100 repair to replace the coil and the compressor and when I told them that didn't make sense to fix it, they wanted me to buy a new refrigerator from them. I received a second opinion, and found that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my refrigerator or freezer. I had the interior thermometer located on the inside door instead of deeper in the fridge so it was giving a poor reading. The freezer was a measuring at -1 to 0 degrees. When I called this to the attention of the management, they refused to refund my service fee and instead offered to credit my $129 service call to my account for future service.....of which there will be none. I wish I could give this place a 0! They ARE NOT honest about their "fee" to come look at the appliances. I spoke with the scheduler several times about having our appliances repaired, and they never mentioned the fee. The repair man collected $164 for the 15 minutes assessing the repairs. Later that day, they quoted me the following: Replace microwave door handle: $206 Replace water valve in fridge: $210 Replace oven control board: $378 I was allowed to take $129 off the oven and $35 off the fridge. I called to ask if I could just replace the fridge and take the $129 off of it, to keep good relations. Bud the manager said I was looking for a discount because I felt like I was treated unfairly. I said yes I was. Generally when your company screws up with customers, thats what they do! He said that is absolutely not how he runs his business. He asked when anyone has ever come to give an estimate without charging a fee. I told him my handyman, the man who installed my patio, our plumber, the HVAC repair man and our tree removal company ALL gave quotes without charging. He said he didn't know how any of them stay in business. A friend recommended Weinstein Inc. On the phone, they recommended I try to repair all three myself before having them come out. I did the microwave in 10 mins with an $80 part and the oven in 30 mins with a $120 part! So proud of myself and ready to tackle the fridge. You can do better than Bettar! ADDED: two electricians and another HVAC company came to one of my listings and provided quotes without charging. Shame a local company has to nickel and dime you. For a broken dryer, they charged $129 for a visit to tell me I needed a part. Then they came back with the part and charged me another $468 - so I paid $600 to get a new electronic board put in (a $200 part). My step-sister reached into my refrigerator and said "nothing is cold in here." She was right. She recommended I call Bettar as she and her husband had good luck with them in the past. I called about 3:00 and the man apologized that he couldn't send someone out that afternoon, no surprise, but could the next day. Since I have a second refrigerator that was fine. We just jammed two refrigerators' contents into one. The Bettar rep said to call around 8:00 a.m. the next day, after they had their schedule worked out to get a time frame. The next morning husband called and they said it would be about noon, but a few minutes later they called back and said they had revamped the schedule and could their tech come right away. Woo hoo, no waiting around most of the day. The technician was very nice and professional. He took apart the freezer and the verdict was the compressor was shot, second time in only 9 years, plus the ice maker hadn't worked in a while. He explained why the French door design of our refrigerator/freezer was the least reliable. We knew we could probably buy a new one for the estimated repair costs so said good bye to the beautiful, but totally unreliable, Amana. Husband was home so we went off to the Bettar show room. It's rather small, not a lot of samples, but the sales person knew her stuff. Our tech had called with the dimensions of our cabinet, so she recommended a side by side refrigerator, which would fill our space and be more reliable, hopefully, than the French door. She estimated the new refrigerator would be available for installation in approximately 10 days. Six days later sales called and said the new refrigerator was in the warehouse and ready to be installed, 4 days early! I scheduled installation for the next day. The two man crew were great. They disassembled and hauled out the beast of a refrigerator in place with good spirits and no whining. They brought the new refrigerator in and assembled it carefully. We noticed the door didn't close quite right and they were glad we caught it before they left. There was a slight glitch in that the ice maker box was marked wrong and they need to come back with the right one and install it, but based on their service so far I don't see any problems. I purchased and had installed a replacement over-the-range microwave from Bettar Appliances. Bettar was recommended to me by a neighbor. The overall cost of the project, including all materials and installation was competitive with the large discount folks. Placed the order on a Monday, Bettar ordered it from GE and the microwave was installed on Thursday the same week. We couldn't have been happier. One caveat: this is not a showroom where you go check out multiple items. They did have some ranges and refrigerators on site, but you might want to do your research elsewhere. This caveat in no way detracts from the quality of service, their ability to answer all my questions, and to be price competitive. Will definitley use them again for repairs or replacement. BTW, the GE microwave JNM1951DRBB is a great mid-line device, balancing features you need and those that you soon discover you need! read more

The scheduler was incredibly rude and aggressive on the phone when I called to find out why no one showed up as scheduled - as if I was the one who made the mistake! Completely unwilling to do anything but reschedule in two weeks (when I have already been waiting a month and I specifically worked from home to accommodate them today). Solid service. I was originally booked on a Monday but when noone had called me by 4pm that day, I called them - turns out the repairman was stuck at another service and wouldn't be able to come that day. No big deal - rescheduled for Thursday and he came on time and assessed the situation promptly and professionally. He returned a week later with the replacement part and everything seems to be in working order now. I found him to be courteous and professional. I also found the operator to be very nice and helpful. Always willing to give me a call at work to say the repairman was on his way - so I didn't have to wait at home all day. My repair was satisfactory, installation of an igniter in a gas range. My oven has a rack that pulls out when the door is opened. My repairman, after completing the repair, put the shelves back in incorrectly and when I opened the door, the rack fell out. I noticed he had a hard time getting the racks out but I never imagined he would put the back incorrectly. But I guess I should have checked that before he left........never to return. read more

I have scheduled appointments and then taken off from work on 2 separate days to wait for these people (their hours are 8-4:30) and both times they did not show up or call to say that they weren't showing up. The first appointment was even in their first slot of the day. When I called the office each time, I was told that the technicians ran out of time and would not have time to do the repair needed on that day. Really annoyed that I used this place. On the phone, they told me that the $99.95 service charge would be applied to the labor cost. Not true! After I waited 1 hour past the assigned time block the service guy came out and told me how overpriced the company was. He quoted me $110 additional labor to fix the part, and made me pay the service cost. When I called the next day about the labor charge vs the service charge, they claimed that I was trying to get the service call for free and they never applied the service charge against the labor. I must have misunderstood the dispatch people because they have been doing this for years and no one else was "confused" by the additional charges. On the phone, the service manager offered to refund my money since I was so upset. When I didn't see the credit on my statement, I called back. Again, he said I was "confused" and he was not "brained damaged" and had never talked to me before. Very unprofessional conversation! So, I am out my $99.95 and I was very dissatisfied with their behavior. I wish I had never heard of Bettar! When I called Sears, the total cost of the service cost and labor costs would have been $129 vs. $200+ with Bettar. I learned my lesson the hard and expensive way to stay away from Bettar. read more

Liars! I have been a customer of Bettar Appliances for many years. In fact, apx. 18 months ago, I made my most recent purchase, a GE convection/microwave oven that Bettar installed. Last month, the convection part of the overn stopped working. When Bettar came out to assess the item, they told me the main heating element had burned out, and they gave me a quote of over $400 to do the repair. They told me that this should not have happened in such a new appliance. I told Bettar that I planned to write to GE and as for help since the oven was so recently out of warrany. Bettar volunteered that if GE provided the needed parts, they (Bettar) would honor the installation warranty and repair the item at no additional cost to me (I had paid the $99.95 service all for their assessment of the problem). I wrote GE and they agreed to provide the parts. However, when I called Bettar to schedule the no-cost repair, their response was quite cool. They informed me that they had never agreed to do the repair, and the charge would be $250. I was hurt and disappointed in their broken promise. After all, I have been a long-time customer, and I had counted on their keeping their word. Needless to say, I will no longer be purchasing appliances or labor from Bettar Appliances. Thankfully, there are numerous appliance stores with excellent ratings listed in Washington Checkbook, Angie's List, and other sources. read more

I don't understand some of the reviews below. First and foremost, if you don't ask what the charge is prior to going out, that's your fault for assuming they go out for free. Secondly, if they tell you their minimum charge is $129 to go out and diagnose and $35 for each additional appliance, how can you give them a 1 star rating for CHARGING YOU WHAT THEY QUOTED, simply because you don't agree with the charge!!?! They have always been very upfront with me. $129 is the minimum labor for any job they do which is then applied towards the total repair job. Their charges are flat rate, similar to if you take your car to a repair shop. They have rates for how much a belt replacement will be, a starter, etc. They have never made me believe the $129 would be deducted from a new appliance if my old appliance was not worth fixing. If I know for a fact what part is broken, they will gladly tell me what the cost will be to complete the job if I ask. With Bettar, you are dealing with a small "mom and pop" shop. They stand behind their warranties, and they are very quick to do so. Because superb service isn't free, you pay for it, however with Bettar, the honest service you receive is worth the cost. read more

Washing machines are tough. The sad reality is that nearly all makes are now made with plastic, too many electronics and more or less designed to need frequent repair and then fail early. I did a ton of research to see if there was another way and came across a 100 year old brand called SpeedQueen which, well, basically makes washers and dryers the old fashioned way--built to last with metal components, simplicity in controls and designed to effectively clean rather than wow. Once I decided on SpeedQueen, I quickly learned that virtually none of the big box and family owned applicance dealers in the DC areas sell them. I only found four or so that do and contacted three of them. Bettar Appliance in Kensington earned my business because: - they are a local, family owned business that has been around for a long time. - Lori, and then Barbara, took the time to speak with me by phone and answered all my questions about the models, other options, pricing, delivery and repair policies, etc. they were patient and very gracious. - they had competitive pricing. I could have purchased my new SpeedQueen elsewhere for a bit less but the difference wasn't significant and I didn't even ask Bettar to equal my best price because I appreciated and valued the extras they offered in service. - I had a bit of a crisis because our old machine just failed and we needed a new one in our home within a couple of days to prepare for some visitors. Barbara and Lori facilitated this--getting the new machine to me SAME DAY, actually within a few hours, of when I ordered it. - Kim and Dwayne delivered and installed the new machine which required navigating some tight turns and lugging new and old equipment up and down a number of steep stairs. At all times, they were ultra professional, courteous, competent and careful to clear door jambs and tight spots. They were also very efficient, removing the old machine, installing the new SpeedQueen and waiting to test it in all cycles to ensure it was working properly. It was. - Finally, I really appreciate the customer orientation that Bettar really demonstrates. They choose brands and models in which they have personal confidence (part of the reason why they're one of the few to sell SpeedQueen). They don't push extended warranties because they believe those are more in retailers' interests than good for customers. And, you can count on their word when it comes to any needed repairs, etc. For example, I live a bit beyond their normal service zone but they agreed to not only deliver to me but to service should that ever be necessary. Bettar sells many other types of home applicances and brands but they don't have a website. I actually didn't even go to the store since it wasn't that close to me. But I had to take a moment to share my experience here. I definitely recommend them to any MD/DC area people looking for an honest, quality source of appliances like washers, driers, and kitchen appliances that will last and be well supported. read more

I was on their schedule today and when I was not sitting by the phone waiting for their service call (I returned their call within 10 mins), they bumped me for the next customer. That was fine with me, but 2 hours later I contacted them to followup when I was going to be serviced. They stated, "sorry not today we will have to reschedule you for tomorrow." We told the scheduler we had a Bosch dishwasher. Their website says they are factory certified. After they didn't fix it and we paid the technician I called to complain and the woman told me: It doesn't say we're factory certified for Bosch. This company is intentionally deceptive about their pricing on repairs. On the phone they tell you that they charge $99.95 to come out for an estimate, but if you go ahead with them this will be applied towards the repair. This simply is not the case, so be forewarned. Bettar uses fixed "book prices" for repairs and the service fee is not included in these. When I was surprised that the service fee wouldn't be applied toward future labor and parts costs, the serviceman told me that I must have misunderstood the receptionist/dispatcher. I didn't think so since I had asked specifically about parts, but to be sure I called back acting like a new customer and they again told me service fee is applied toward repair. What is especially maddening about dealing with Bettar is that they are quite aggressive in making YOU seem unreasonable, that YOU misunderstood, when it is crystal clear that they are being misleading. [Looks like Jyotsna g. had exactly the same experience so look at those comments). I actually don't have a problem with them charging a fee to come out - just wish they would be honest about it. read more

When I needed a belt for my M1A1 Maytag dryer, they had it in stock, and sold it to me, a retail walk-in no problem. Since the only other place I get appliance parts is far away from my work, this is convenient for me when I need to get something mission critical right away. All new appliances would be good, too, but my philosophy is to operate them until there it is just embarrassing. After all, they haven't invented anything new since the microwave. Sad to say, this dryer has had to have 2 belts, new bearings, idler belt tensioner bearing and gas igniter since it conveyed with the house. I guess that's why it was free. read more

I'm upset due to unnecessary charges and an inaccurate assessment. I was told that the price would be $129 (or so) for the service call which would apply to repairs. To minimize his time, I removed the panels on my washer and gave him the low down over the telephone. When he was done with the washer, stating there was no hope (and leaving the "start" button in much worse shape than before he arrived so we couldn't even press it anymore), I directed him to the kitchen to look at electronics on our dishwasher; I explained it would stall, but then start after we rebooted it (unplugged/plugged). Little did I know that request cost me $40 to look at a second appliance. He spent 4-5 minutes looking at it and then said it was toast, needed a new electronic panel, would cost at least $500 to attempt a repair and that it might not work even then. We just paid Bettar Appliance $180 for 15 minutes "work". We protested the $40 charge. He said that it was in the contract. I never saw it. I'm on a fixed limited income! I'd be crazy to agree to that. Subsequently, I spent considerable effort and time searching for another dishwasher and fretting; all the quiet good quality dishwashers like my old one are way out of my price range. Taking back my control, I decided to purchase a power strip for my "toast" KitchenAid Elite dishwasher and plugged the cord into the new power strip. It worked! I have not had a single electronic problem since. The dishwasher works great. All the electronics, features, and cycles are "on"! I paid Bettar Appliance $180 for nothing. They don't have a senior discount, I might add. This must be the same technician that ripped off Beth A. in Oct 2019. There are so many highly recommended individuals and companies on NextDoor and listservs, there was no need for me to gamble with my time and money at Bettar. read more
