    Chicken shawarma~

Tried their chicken shawarma. Not bad at all! Generous portions of chicken and rice. Great hummus and salad. Bumping the review to 4 stars.

So this Commercial Drive Spot is so good and satisfying. My favourite here has to be the Chicken Shawarma Plate, which features of course chicken, but it's served with fluffy rice, a yummy hummus, pickles for contrast, garlic paste and your choice of Greek salad or Tabouleh. It's a great lunch every time and keeps me coming back. Apparently its open late, and vegetarian friendly!

Don't hesitate to get the Chicken Shawarma plate. The chicken is so juicy and rice so flavourful, it's becoming my favourite go-to. Very generous portion and includes pita wrap, salad, and hummus. This other dip that they put on the plate is magical, something like a garlic yoghurt mix, that other places don't add. Make sure you try it out. The place gets pretty warm, and I've only been here on hot days. They have chairs and tables set up outside, and it's so nice to be able to eat and people-watch at the same time while enjoying the cool breeze.

They are the best. Healthy, cheap, tasty and place. One of my favorites in town. I love their rice. It's kind of like that sticky dim sum rice you get inside the leaf. That's what it tastes like. Really good.

This place epitomizes Commercial Drive for me. It provides cheap, great ethnic food but you could easily miss this place due to their obnoxious sign and simple facade. The portions are usually generous here. My husband and I regularly buy one chicken shawarma plate to share for dinner. Due to it's quick turnover, the chicken is almost always juicy and moist. Most of the time, it's carved straight from the spit. I hate shawarma places that keep all of their meat in moisture-sucking warmers. They have a variety of sauces too. I love their garlic sauce - thick and spicy. My husband for some reason prefers their Vancouver sauce. I think it's sickly sweet but he always gets it on his half of the plate. I prefer to eat meat with a salty flavorful punch but if you like it sweet, give it a try. We almost always take our fare home. It's a nice, clean place with granite tables to sit at inside though. While we haven't tried their falafel and the loud sign outside proclaims them the "Best Falafel", this place truly is one of the best in the city for chicken shawarma.

I make the trek out there just to eat at least twice a week-100 percent addicted. Everything is so fresh and delicious and fixed to your liking. I usually get the falafel plate with hummus/tabouleh and then add a few dollars of chicken on top. Their hummus is some of the best I have ever had anywhere. I also buy the hummus and bread in bulk and it lasts a while in the fridge/freezer respectively. Very inexpensive, open late, healthy, simple, and excellent every time. Every time I am here the customers are wayyy more rude than at other places but the staff handle it well. Don't know why this is.

The first thing I noticed was that she was not wearing gloves. She was wearing gloves on one hand but not both. I'm assuming that one glove was for handling money. I personally am not comfortable with anyone's bare hands touching my food directly, and specially with the whole pandemic thing still going on. So, that for me was a big turn off. She didn't ask me which ingredients I wanted on my wrap. I mean how unusual?! She just put all the ingredients on my wrap. What if I had an allergy? What if I didn't want tomatoes?! The whole thing was just surreal. She ignored us the whole time we were standing there while making our wrap with her bare hands. I just hope that they were clean! Once we got home and I had a taste of the wrap it tasted very bland. The lamb was dry and tasted like plastic and the hummus was ...well...grainy, unsalted and miserable. The pita bread was not a quality pita bread, so it started to fall apart half way through the wrap. Just a little juice from the tomatoes was dissolving the pita. Not good. I love middle eastern/mediterranean food and have had many many different types of shawarma wraps all over and this was one of the poorest I've had. If you know your wraps and love your lamb, skip this place.

The service was friendly and the place was clean, but it was the food that obliterated any chance of me going back, or frankly of them being on the map of local mediterranean/middle eastern foods and competing successfully. I got the Beef Sandwich with added hummus, onions, bell peppers, white sauce and hot sauce to go. Their beef that is served and cooked on the vertical broiler typical of a shawarma style sandwich was extremely low quality....even for street food shawarma standards. It tasted like poor of the poor quality. My wrap was completely soaked in white sauce (see pic.) All I could taste was sauce, bread and bits of onion, and since I hadn't had anything for breakfast and this was my first meal....I'm hoping I won't get an upset stomach. Sauces of that nature almost all of the time have the bad types of oil...so we'll see. If you're still into that kinda fast food, lower quality....let's just indulge style of eating....then I'd suggest to get it "easy on the sauce", because mine was swimming in it. $17 later....White Sauce with a side of flat bread. .....I think I might have some Pepto Bismol in the cupboard.

It seems like they have tried to blow up the UBC location, and so even though things are a couple of dollars less expensive than at the Broadway location, the portion sizes are smaller. I also find that the food at the UBC location is often dry and or cold and it's not nearly as fresh as the Broadway location. For the donair, chicken, and shawarma meat, for example, they cut it off and set it in trays which are then set on the back counter in the back of the restaurant, not on a warmer. Warmer. This means that when you get your food the meat is usually lukewarm at best. This is very different than the Broadway location where everything is kept in warming trays. The women who work behind the counter and handle the cash register also wear gloves that they do not change. You can observe them handling cash and interacting with customers and handling trash containers, and then they'll go grab somebody's pita shell and stick their gloves in the lettuce and tomatoes and make a sandwich. That's just nasty.
