The food was so great! We were in Vancouver for a couple days and audibly gasped when we found out there was The Halal Guys here. We haven't had it since the original experience in New York and this trip did not disappoint! Tasted like being in New York and trying it out for the first time again. I got a Combo sandwich with beef gyro and chicken. So yummy. A good portion of meat and the white sauce is to die for. Even got some of the baklava since we get a free dessert with entree after 8pm... delicious as well. We even came back again during that 4 night stay. We couldn't resist. Follow your instinct. I didn't. Regret followed. I read the less than stellar reviews of this place but decided to give them a try anyhow...even though I had a feeling that I probably shouldn't. The service was friendly and the place was clean, but it was the food that obliterated any chance of me going back, or frankly of them being on the map of local mediterranean/middle eastern foods and competing successfully. I got the Beef Sandwich with added hummus, onions, bell peppers, white sauce and hot sauce to go. Their beef that is served and cooked on the vertical broiler typical of a shawarma style sandwich was extremely low quality....even for street food shawarma standards. It tasted like poor of the poor quality. My wrap was completely soaked in white sauce (see pic.) All I could taste was sauce, bread and bits of onion, and since I hadn't had anything for breakfast and this was my first meal....I'm hoping I won't get an upset stomach. Sauces of that nature almost all of the time have the bad types of oil...so we'll see. If you're still into that kinda fast food, lower quality....let's just indulge style of eating....then I'd suggest to get it "easy on the sauce", because mine was swimming in it. $17 later....White Sauce with a side of flat bread. .....I think I might have some Pepto Bismol in the cupboard. read more

So which one is it - Gyro, Donair or Shawarma? Which one rocks your world? BTW what is the proper spelling of - 'Shawarma,' or 'Shwarma' or is it 'Shawerma?' Deep thoughts. I really just want that fiyaaaaaaa flavour going off in my mouth. And I don't mean fiyaaaaaaa as in burn my mouth call 911 - it's all about authentic flavour & taste. The Halal Guys started out as a food cart in NYC & grew worldwide into several dozen outlets. They must have been doing something right. Now Vancouver gets a turn at this famous Halal spot. Let's hope this isn't another big 'over promise & fail to deliver' type joint. Several of these wrap food type shops have gone really stale in Vancouver over time, believing in their own hype. They slowly began to sacrifice quality & as well as supreme taste thinking they can still maintain customer support. Vancouverites have you ever gone into a Shawarma joint that gave you a sad tasting Tabbouleh? Yup those shops went the way of the Dodo. Many have shut their doors due to heavy competition & superior quality on offer - but one must know where to look! Price will factor in hugely as well. For some reason I have strong Blaze Pizza vibes about this joint. Anyone remember BP on the Granville Mall? Didn't last long there & it moved to West Vancouver. I wonder how that's working out? I honestly believe that to build on the excitement of a new store opening, the actual Halal Guys should be on hand. Kinda like when Jollibee opened, the actual Jollibee made an appearance & the crowd went wild. Ahh just my thoughts on how to have a successful opening. Famously known The Halah Guys opened up on Robson and Seymour downtown. Already attracting a large lunch crowd and took some time to get to the counter to place orders. Main options are Wrap $13.99 or S ($15.99) or L ($17.99) platters which protein choices of beef, chicken or falafel. Covered with white sauce, hot sauce and bbq sauce. The halal guys is finally open in Vancouver! What started as a food truck in New York now has a storefront in Vancouver with plenty of seating. You start off by picking small platter ($15.99), large platter ($17.99) or sandwich ($13.99). On the pricier side. You then choose a protein - beef gyro, chicken, falafel or combo of 2. All platters come with rice, lettuce, tomato and pita. Extra toppings have an extra cost such as jalapeños, olives, hummus and baba ghanoush. You then get to pick white sauce, hot sauce and or bbq sauce. I got the classic white sauce. Overall ok meal and reminiscent of the one in New York! But NYC is much better of course :) read more

I finally got someone making my wrap that allowed me 4 zips of their hot sauce. The sauce is HOT.I am very white so thank you for looking out for my bland tongue people but damn. My friend from Seattle was visiting for a few days, and when we passed this small restaurant on Robson a block from the library, she went bonkers, saying that the Halal Guys have a food truck that comes to her office at Microsoft regularly and it's her FAVORITE lunch! She insisted we go and take out lunch there - so we did. (I love Middle Eastern foods anyhow, so it wasn't exactly a hard sell lol!). I was impressed with the bright and vibrant wall murals inside, with a cheery yellow being the prominent color, reminiscent of the famous NYC cabbies. The mural motifs and the subway tiles were all very NYC-centric, and the whole place kinda had that "Big Apple" vibe. Knowing that this is a New York-based restaurant made the interior theme make sense. And it definitely felt like a fresh, happy place. Even all the employees there were smiling and greeted us warmly and seemed genuinely happy to be there. Genuinely. Onto the food.... My friend and I each opted for the "small" bowl. FYI: the "small" bowl is HUMONGOUS once they pile it high with ingredients. And pile it on, they do! We each got a combo with chicken and beef gyro (this was a tough decision, as the felafel looked wonderful, too), and it comes with orange seasoned rice (very tasty, not bad. I actually thought this was shredded carrots, it's so orange), lettuce, diced tomatoes. My friend also chose to have some black olives and onions and jalapeños added (not me! But I had a bit of tahini on it, and hummus), and we both chose their famous "white sauce" (no-one will say what's in it, but I can tell you, it's MAGIC. I suspect it's a sour cream-garlic concoction but I'm not sure. All it know is, it's bloody delicious). There's also some beans and other ingredients in the bowl that I'm forgetting. And they put some fresh, warm pita wedges, too. The meal is delicious. For me, it was easily 4 meals, over the course of 3 days. I was initially on the fence about the chicken, as its texture was a bit odd, but when I heated up the leftovers for the next few meals, it was way better. I think the flavors of all the spices blended together and the meal was actually better heated up the following day. (The beef was wonderful, and all the ingredients were super fresh). For $15, I thought this was super reasonable, as it really did make for four meals for me. (I think for most people, the small bowl would be 2-3 meals). Also, I gotta make a shout-out to the guys behind the counter who helped me with my order and talked me through the process of creating my personal bowl with patience and humor and friendliness. my girlfriend raved about the halal guys, and said it was three partners who opened up a hot dog cart in new york, over 30 years ago, to feed the cabbie drivers and has now over 90 locations around the world...so with much curiosity, i decided to check this place out... their grand opening was this past weekend and they had a bunch of prizes for the first person in line, first ten in line, and first 100 people in line...with no expectation, i decided to wake up early (8:30 am to 9:00 am ish, they opened at 11:00 am) and head on over, and to my surprise, i was about the eighth or ninth person in line, woo hoo! waiting in line wasn't too bad, the time actually flew by, as the people around were very pleasant to talk to... when the doors opened, we were greeted with applause and warm welcomes from all the staff, they even had a dj in the restaurant! it was a little chaotic in there as it was difficult to hear the server over the loud music. i ordered a platter of beef and chicken and also had their sandwich. when you download their app, you can also redeem their fries and beverage right away or save for another day. the style of service is similar to a chipotle, subway, or even poke, hummus and babaganoush are extra. this is a great addition to robson as their price point is reasonable, and will be very popular during lunch, late nights, and game days, and an alternative to japadog. i found their beef and chicken to be seasoned a little too salty for my taste and the crinkly fries were undercooked and unseasoned. this may take a bit of time, as i imagine they are still working out the kinks... if you download the app, you may use the following invite code fr a free beverage and fries NAT19367924 read more

Been waiting to try this place and was a bit disappointed. I had the chicken sandwich and one side of it was smothered in sauce but the other was dry lettuce, could have been mixed up a bit more. I asked for hot sauce and was warned by the nice server it's very spicy, hot damn was it ever. I like spicy but that was hot as hell that it over powered the food. I saw other people have a plate and that looked pretty good so maybe I'd try that but there's other places on the end of Robson that's way better with more options read more

As with many things imported from elsewhere, we Vancouverites end up with a watered-down version of the original for twice the price. I've been to the original cart in NYC, and I am struggling to make the connection in my mind that what is being served here is coming from the same business. The rice is the same signature bright red colour, but lacking the same satisfying flavour, the white sauce is missing its tangy, vinegary hit and is more like a heavy peppercorn ranch salad dressing, the meat quality seems to vary from day to day, and they pile on raw onion like they overstocked it. The one redeeming quality is that the portions are generous. I've had the Vancouver outpost's food 3 times now. Hopefully over time it does get better and more consistent. I have lots of affection for the NYC Halal Guys so my fingers are crossed for that. read more

We tried this place because of the hype, so I was really surprised at how bad the food was. Just a cold, gross over-sauced mess of a "sandwich". The sandwich is essentially a wrap that isn't fully closed. Imagine overstuffing a pita so that you can't even come close to closing it; then pouring ten ounces of white sauce on top of it; then wrapping it in tinfoil so that the foil is actually in full contact with the sauce. It's a bizarre serving technique, and is a waste of sauce because half on it ends up on the tin foil. Unless maybe you're supposed to lick it off or something. The chicken was also ice cold, which maybe it's supposed to be? But I saw a guy working a flat top behind the front line with tons of chicken frying up... give me some of that chicken. Granted that it is early days for this restaurant, but it also seems like no one knows how to do the job here. That's understandable, but isn't this a big chain restaurant? I'd think they'd have their stuff together. Everyone's friendly though, they just look confused. Nice ambiance as well. Probably won't ever be back though, if I'm being honest. read more
