The shop is small, located in a strip mall, but you can smell the fresh, house-made bagels as soon as you walk in, which is always a good sign. The menu is simple but has everything you'd want: fresh bagels, toppings, and hearty bagel sandwiches. They even feature a bagel of the week. I went with the cheese jalapeño bagel and ordered "The Notch" (lox, cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers). I asked for mine open-faced, which was an extra $2.50 on top of the $18 price, but that's about what I usually pay at home, so it felt fair. The portion was generous with plenty of cream cheese, thick slices of tomato and onion, and a healthy serving of lox. The bagel itself was very fresh, though I was expecting a stronger jalapeño and cheese flavor--it leaned more bready than bold. The toppings definitely carried the flavor. Hopefully, that was just an off day for the bagel itself. One downside: some of the toppings are displayed openly in a case, and we did notice a couple of flies, which took away from the otherwise fresh, clean feel. The shop has a few small tables and a casual setup with a drink case and coffee bar. Staff was quick, efficient, and helpful, though not overly conversational. Overall, Golden State Bagel is a convenient stop for a fresh bagel sandwich, and while I wasn't blown away by the bagel itself, the toppings were excellent and the location is very handy.

They've got a nice assortment of donuts, croissants and drinks (Including the best Apple Fritters and Bear Claws). I like that they accept cash and Zelle. Although it shares a parking lot with Domino's Pizza, a barber shop and a dry cleaner, there are plenty of available spots.

I assume they make a certain amount and when they're gone they close and that's probably the way most places do it. Donuts were good, not greasy. I'm not a big donut person so they were ok and comparable to most places that don't have a greasy donut that leaves that oily taste in your mouth. What I really came for was the ham and cheese croissant but it was a little disappointing. Prices were actually much higher than I was expecting. We paid almost $20 for a ham and cheese croissant, blueberry cheese danish and 6 donuts including a cinnamon twist thing that I assume was supposed to be more than the others but I can't wrap my head around $18.30 for what we ordered. I legit think she charged me for 15 donuts instead of 5 cuz I saw something ring up as 15. Based off that I can confidently say I won't return. Items werent worth what I paid and if it was an error charge, the employee should have known that what I ordered was not close to $20 so I cant recommend this place

I love all of their locations. The Carlsbad spot has a slightly more extensive menu -- especially with the pizzas -- but the Encinitas location is just as good and always worth the stop. My personal favorites are the ham and gruyère baguette and the Pizza Florentine, and their cookies are dangerously good. And if you're a coffee person, you'll be happy here -- their espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos are consistently great. It's simply a gem of a local spot for really good bread, coffee, and casual bites.

Great variety, stores well in the freezer. The viennoiseries are a combination of classic and unique, and amazing: you have to try their fig bar! Do not try their almond and chocolate croissant though, please. Otherwise they will ran out and I won't be able to get mine. I compared their regular butter croissant with other "French" ones, and this one wins by a huge margin: airy, fluffy, just enough sweetness. They recently expanded in their main location, now you can get a sandwich, coffee and pizza. They also collaborate with other local vendors and you can find some unique items in their fridge. The vibe is so cool too. Friendly, chill, California style. Highly recommend this place, or their other locations.
