I've driven by this place a gazillion times & after a friend recommended Best Alterations to me, I decided to give them a try. The gentleman at the counter was very friendly & professional. I had an idea of the length I wanted my blouse shortened to so I went into the fitting room & then got on the platform. W/O me saying a word, he pinned exactly where I wanted. Perfect :-). He asked when I wanted it by & I told him within 2 days before lunch time. He states, no problem but to call ahead. I call the day of & he tells me it's ready. I went it to pick it up, tried it on before paying & couldn't be happier! My blouse fit great! Will definitely be going back. This is my first review. It takes a lot for me to want to review a place, but the fact that I just had my brand new $300 selvage denim ruined definitely made me want to write this. I am giving one star because the fit of the jeans is good after the taper and hem that I got, and the turn around was fast. I'm leaving it at one star due to the fact that I specifically asked (multiple times by phone and in person) if my jeans could be tailored in the way that I wanted them. Selvage denim needs to be tapered in a specific way in order to retain their selvage id. The first time I asked by phone, I was cut off as soon as I said "selvage" and was told "yes, all the the time." I was very happy because the guy sounded so confident and most small shops that I called didn't really even know what I meant. I was still a little worried, so when I brought them in I specifically asked again and brought a pair that I had previously had tapered to show as an example. I showed the guy the selvage on both pairs and explained that I wanted this to be untouched and wanted to make sure that the taper could be done from the inseam and not the outside so as not to damage it. He repeated everything back to me and sounded good to go. I came back two days later pick up my jeans only to find that everything had been ignore. The selvage id had been cut off and the taper was done from the outside. Although it may not seem like a big deal to most people, to someone who collects selvage denim and pays a premium for it, I feel like my denim was ruined. I paid my money and left. I will definitely not be going hear again for any service. I don't care if it is a quick turn around if I am going to leave with expensive clothing that has been damaged. read more

I had them hem a dress. It was a simple, straight hem on a stretchy fabric wrap dress. It cost $15. They did a good job, and finished on time as promised. It's a small storefront on S. Bascom at Camden Ave. They are open until 7 pm on weekdays. They share a small parking lot with other businesses, and I had no trouble parking either day I went. They were very friendly, though I found the guy who helped me a little hard to understand sometimes (he had kind of an accent). But anyway, they did exactly as I asked, so they must've understood me well enough. The fitting room is tiny. I'm smaller than average and still wished for a bit more space. If you are on the larger side (or if you're claustrophobic) you may find it uncomfortable. Maybe they have another changing area elsewhere in the store, I'm not sure. Here was one detail I liked: I hadn't specified that the new hem stitching should exactly resemble the original, but the dress came back with a nice double-stitched edge similar to the original stitching. I appreciated that because before at a different alterations place, when I had a dress hemmed, it came back with a different-looking, uglier type of stitching. (I don't get clothes altered very often, and it just didn't occur to me to specify "make it look like the original" - I sorta thought that was just assumed.) So I was happy with Best Alteration's judgment and the quality of work they did. One little thing - the dress didn't come back wrapped in plastic or anything, just on a hanger. Yeah, I know this is an alterations place and NOT a cleaner, and the dress did not seem soiled when it came back. But I am a bit of a clean-clothes freak and I envisioned my dress hanging out, naked and plasticless, for 4 days next to other random items of other people's clothing. I wish it had been protected from possible dirt and snags with a plastic wrapper. I felt compelled to wash my dress again before wearing. I'm just mentioning this for clean-clothes nuts like me, who may wish to factor in laundering time. But that's just a really minor quibble. All in all, they did nice work in a timely manner, and I would use them again. read more

Great people, fast service, and good price! I usually come here to get my jeans hemmed and they always do a perfect job. Other times they'd recommend additional alterations to my jeans and the result is always best...this is what good business is..going above and beyond what is expected/desired. My only recommendation: Make sure to get a receipt! I guess because I've been so many times the main guy knows me now, so when I dropped off some jeans to be hemmed for same day pick up, he didn't bother to give me a receipt and just say "alright, see you later!" An hour passed, I showed up, and he was not there! that was my "uh oh" moment. so I had to spend a minute explaining the jeans that i dropped off i.e. color, size, brand, type of alteration, anything unique about it to convince them the jeans were mine. They did a great job on a set of shirts, shortening the hem. I've had similar work done at another place, where the stitching was uneven and rippled even after ironing. Here, their hems are like the original shirt, neat and flat. Even the slits on the sides are nicely finished. The pricing is a little confusing, make sure you know what they are charging before committing to the work. read more

Lee is fantastic! I've been bringing my clothes to him for over 3 years now and he couldn't do a better job. To top it off, he is so sincere and kind and I consider him a good friend. He knows how to make your clothes fit YOU and I never hesitate to buy things I normally wouldn't because I know he can fix them. Lee is the BEST in what he does. He altered my wedding dress in 3 weeks. I did not just need a simple alteration either. Lee was able to build in my bra and even adjust the chest area and arm holes in my wedding dress, he also added a bustle and hemmed my dress and steamed it for me before I picked it up. When first coming to him I was skeptical that he could make my dress perfect for my special day, but he knew exactly what he was doing. He also added a piece of lace to my aunts vintage veil, to give it a finishing touch in less than a week to my wedding day. Trust me, if you need your dress altered, he works magic. These guys do terrific work on everything from minor repairs and hems to complete item remakes. I'd give them a 5 if it weren't for their ability to complete orders when promised. 30-40% of the time orders aren't finished when promised (even when I've noted an urgent deadline like a special occasion or upcoming trip) and a few times they failed to have things ready by the rescheduled pick-up date. If they could do a better job of meeting promised deadlines(or be more realistic in estimating their work backlog when promising completion times) I'd make them an absolute 5. read more

O M G !!! iv'e been coming here for a few years and have been generally satisfied HOWEVER the last three times i have taken things to be altered and they have not been up to par and i have asked for him to re-do it. the first time he was ok. second time ( he hemmed my pants WAY to short) he was irritated. This time after patching my son's seven jeans so they look like they belong to a rodeo clown, i had it. i politely told him "lee, this isn't how you have patched any pants in the past... i don't really like it :(". he flipped out. he started getting aggressive and BLAMING ME for not explaining what i wanted. i told him that i NEVER EXPECT anything other that what he has done in the past ( he usually does a great almost invisible patching). HE WENT ON A RANT and to be honest with you i love to argue especially when i'm right but he freaked me out. i got the hell out of there as soon as i could and i will never go back. and since i'm writing i will add that his pricing systems is shady. people that have brought in clothes while i was waiting and that have gotten the same work done that i have get different prices, often times less than what he charges me. i always tired to look this over because i have been relatively happy with his work but now that i'm pissed off, beware. ew, i'm so annoyed... now i have to find a new alterations place. boo. read more

My first experience with this tailor was about a year ago. I brought in quite a few pairs of pants most of which are brand new since I'm never able to find jeans that fit my small waist. As Lee is is taking notes of how much needs to be taken in he asks me if I "lost weight"? I was a bit startled seeing as how I've never been in that shop before so I wondered why he would make such a remark. I dismissed it and went on my way. It took them OVER a month to finish hemming my pants. I wasn't in a rush to get them back but after I showed up twice and they still hadn't even started on them I was really upset. Needless to say they did a decent job so I took two more pair of pants to be taken in. AGAIN this man was so rude and asked if I had lost weight. This time I said "excuse me you should never ask a customer anything concerning their weight. I highly recommend that everyone stays away from this rude and untimely service!!!!! read more

They should be named "Worst Alteration." I wish I could give them negative stars. I was unfortunately advised to go to them to have my wedding jacket made. I bought all the fabric and buttons, and drew front, side, and back sketches for them. The man took my measurements, asked me all the right questions, and told me that it would be "no problem making this for you." I called and called, was put off for weeks after the due date, and finally was told I could pick up my jacket. I can't believe I paid this person $200... it looked TERRIBLE! I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, and though "maybe it'll look better on." I was wrong... I was totally crushed. Needless to say, I had to take it to Just My Size to be fixed. I am so thankful for Just My Size - I don't know what I would have done without them! read more

Ok so went here because it's close to home. The owner Lee is nice but after leaving a jacket I wanted tailored with him for what he said would be 7 days, 8 days later I went to get my jacket. When I walk in I see my jacket on the hanger untouched. Still with the chalk lines from the fitting. WTF why wouldn't he call if there was a problem? Dude says sorry and will have it done in 2 hours. After waiting 4 hours I figure I'll just pick it up Monday. I show up Monday the jackets done, but as I put it on they had added a strip on my jacket that I wanted but in doing that they sowed the pocket closed. So again I have to wait. After almost 2 weeks my jacket is done. The two stars is because he had quoted me $75 for the work but after taking so long and making mistakes he droped the price to $60. Not bad for the work it did look good just bad business people. read more

This place sucks. I went their to have my sister's bridesmaid dress altered. Two things: 1. He did a crappy job with the alteration. He claimed that he needed to buy some special lining that would cost extra and I would have to pay for it. I refused because I didn't believe him. I think he blamed it on the lining because he didn't know how to fix it. It was an Anne Taylor dress. He told me that he does many dresses....especially Anne Taylor dresses and that it would be an easy fix. WRONG! 2. He promised the dress would be done in a week. We come back in a week to get the dress and it hadn't been touched. I was so angry at this point, but of course I left it there and came back later and was very unsatisfied. I told him that was I was very unsatisfied and he knocked off $5. Don't let him fool you. When you meet him, he's very nice and tells you that he does many alterations for Macy's and he can do everything. He even tried to get me to let him alter my wedding dress. $5.00 for a Hem-Job isn't bad and I have always been satisfied with their work. I had them hem a pair of jeans a long time ago and recently went back there to get 3 pair of pants done. It was late Saturday and they are closed on Sundays so the guy originally circled Tuesday. I asked if it could be done by Monday and he crossed out Tuesday and circled Monday on the receipt, I dropped in late Monday and my pants were done, they look great and finally at perfect length. Only reason why I give them three stars is because I have never been able to drop off something and pick it up in an hour. I usually expect to come back in 1-2 days. read more

i had high hopes of this place after reading the reviews here, but i did not like the service i received here. i brought in a dress that i recently bought, 1 side of the teeth came out of the zipper so the tab is only attached to the other teeth . this guy looked at the dress, and did 3 things that i did not like: 1. he pointed at a section of the teeth & said it's broken...but it was just a very tiny tiny piece of fiber from the dress on the side of the teeth! 2. w/o asking me, he snipped open the threat at the end of the zipper that was holding the teeth together. of course the tab then fell out, and he said that it's broken & i'd have to replace the whole thing, and it'll cost me $20...he then proceeded to write up an order 3. when i told him that i didn't want the work done (since i didn't feel that he used enough due diligence), he asked me why not, if the price was too high, why don't i want him to do the work, etc i brought the dress home to my parents. after we figured out which direction the tab should face, my mom sewed the end together again...it looks perfect now...took less than 5min...and no zipper replacement needed. read more

my cousin's friend actually recommended this place to her because she is my matron of honor for my upcoming church wedding and wanted a place that does great alterations for a reasonable price for her bridesmaids dress. my husband (we are married already through the court system) needed some alterations done on some pants in a hurry because he was leaving for a business trip so we decided to try this place out. they offered 1 hour alterations....... but since we went in the middle of a saturday afternoon, there were MOUNDS of pants already needing to be hemmed. i talked the man that owned the store (im guessing.. he looked like he was in charge), telling him that i was in desperate need to get these pants hemmed by the next day because my husband was leaving and he said "no problem, we'll have it done in a couple of hours!" .... and they did, i picked it up 2 hours later!! they charged me $15 bucks for the pants i asked to be done in a rush and less for the pants that i didnt need right away (i had some jeans hemmed too)... i think i had a total of 5 pairs of pants for the low price of 55 bucks!! not to mention, they kept the original hem on ALL of them!! i'd DEFINITELY recommend this place to anyone looking for a great alteration! read more

Mr. Lee was an answered prayer and a true miracle worker for altering my wedding dress. On top of all of that, his customer service skills are impeccable. He is so kind, compassionate, and listens to what you really want. His attention to detail is everything. He delivers. I'll explain...I had a nightmare experience with the bridal shop my dress was ordered from in which the dress arrived way too big for my body frame after being wrongly advised to order up. With a tight deadline for my wedding (I'm talking just a few weeks), my mom took a chance and called Best Alteration and spoke with Mr. Lee. He was so accommodating, explained his process and guaranteed that he will custom fit the dress to my body (and this dress has a mesh corset back with a-lot of intricate beading and lace - yes I was that girl with that dress needing a miracle worker to alter this to my body without messing up the original look of the dress). All I can say is wow, the dress is absolutely beautiful. Trust me when I say, he transformed my dress perfectly. Words I will never forget from Mr. Lee, "I want you happy." I took in two blazers to get the length of the sleeves shortened. One they did a fabulous job, the other, they made the sleeves kinda short. So I guess I'm still 50/50 on this place. I wasn't planning to bring my wedding dress to him because I didn't think that he specialized in wedding dresses. I had a particularly tricky bridesmaid dress with multiple layers that other bridesmaids had botched by other places and this place did it beautifully on the first try. Today, I picked up two slacks that I had shortened and, as usual, they were nicely done. I always take my jeans here to get hemmed, and I've never really had a problem. After some wear, I've found some loose threads hanging from the hem, but cut em off, and it's all good. They always have my stuff done when they say they will and it's only 12 bucks for hemming with the original seam. Some reviewer had a problem with the owner asking her if she had lost weight, and to that I say, why would you complain about that? I have been going here for about 4 years, i bring my pants to be shortened, my kids pants, my expensive jeans, and i always get great results, the only thing is sometimes when i go to pick them up, they still arents ready.
