I go here every Sunday with my dad and I'm pretty sure at this point the waitresses know my name. They have the best pancakes and everything else basically. If it had just been about the food, Bertha's would surely be getting 4 or 5 stars. I took my toddler there for breakfast, and thought the food quality was especially good. We had the basics -- a short stack of pancakes, oatmeal, and an omelette. The pancakes were thin and doughy (the way I like them), the omelette was seasoned well and the oatmeal was great as well. Where I wasn't pleased was with the price. We substituted fruit for potatoes and bread and with an orange juice and coffee, the total came to nearly $30. I also didn't realize that they only accepted cash. While it was posted on the door, I didn't notice it on the way in, and wasn't mentioned on the menu or anywhere else inside. I was a little embarrassed that I had to run to the car to get cash, but the server was very nice about it -- I'm guessing it happens often. I'd rather give 3.5 stars, but that's not an option, so I'm rounding down. read more

I just moved onto the street about a month ago. I've been to the big diner, Kostas and etc., all of which fine. But this one being closer I decided to check it out this morning and I was actually pretty blown away. The food was fantastically prepared, everything crispy that's needs to be and fluffy that should be. No complaints there. The place itself is small which is preferred by me. We are regulars now because of the amazing food and amazing attentions of the owner Justin, and best waitress in Buffalo, Nora. This place has always been good. I've been a patron of Bertha's Diner for several years. I love the location and theme but lately I have been disappointed, not by the food but by the service. The food is delicious! I always order coffee. It comes in a small cup and at breakfast I like a refill or two. I needed to ask for one and for the cream that goes with it. It's a very small place and the waitress should be looking around. Lastly I gave her a big bill with exact amount of coin. She neglected to bring my change which I reminded her of as I left. The worst lunch I've ever had. I got a sandwich that had cheese turkey spinach tomato on bread. That's all. They forgot to put tomato on didn't cook the spinach at all, and forgot the cheese. My son and I are on a quest to find the best breakfast in Buffalo. Berta's is on the top of our list. The place is so small I drove past it twice, before I noticed it next to the North Park Theater. We were able to find a parking spot right in front, so I assumed that it wouldn't be crowed. Wrong! The place was packed. the couple who came in the door behind us left right out after discussing the wait. They should have waited. We were seated in about 5-10 minutes. First of all Berta's does have steak and eggs contrary to the reviews I have read. In edition to their regular menu.There is a specials menu. Also if you look to the wall behind the counter you will see even more specials. My son ordered two pancakes, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit and a side of their corn beef hash. I had the Derrick's Chicken and Waffle special that came with eggs and a sweet gravy. My son's pancakes were huge. He has this habit of cutting all of his pancakes into bite size pieces before eating. I was half finished with my food by the time he stopped cutting. His pancakes and his corned beef hash were both delicious (I sampled them both of course. His fruit was fresh with a mixture of bite size pieces if banana, cantaloupe, blueberry, strawberry, grapes and pineapple. My eggs could have been just a little less done, but my eggs and waffle were both good, the chicken was hot and tasted great. I was surprised at how good the sweet gravy was. I assumed I wasn't going to like the sweet gravy so I didn't try it until near the end of my meal. Even better than the food was the service. The staff was both friendly and attentive. read more

The hashbrowns tasted like fish and it was not very good at all and the home fries tasted like frozen potatoes and they had no onions or peppers in them so in my opinion, that's not considered home fries. I stumbled upon this place while strolling down hertel after hours when my boyfriend and I decided we must check it out. We couldn't believe we never heard of this diner before. It's cash only--but that's okay. We went here on a whim when thinking about some place to eat on a Sunday afternoon around 12:15. Luckily we got there right in time because apparently they close at 1pm. I was very impressed with our service; they were very attentive. I was a bit concerned at first that the place was too small even for a restroom, but after inquiring there is a restroom after going through a maze underground (and through the kitchen) which was super clean. The great thing about this is you can inspect how clean the kitchen is and it was pretty damn clean. I ordered the 57 chevy which is just 2 eggs with bacon, hashbrowns and toast. I like this place better than lake effect because their prices are cheaper and in my opinion so is the food without a ridiculous wait (plus it's not too far away). My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito but he wasn't too happy about it (he likes lake effect diner better). But; I think we will be going back here some time soon. I'd like to try their Belgian waffles or those ridiculous heathbar pancakes. All in All == great experience. Check it out. read more

Cash-only, excellent food. Southern-style casual diner that specializes in fried chicken and waffles. Huge portions, plate-sized pancakes, reasonable prices. The oatmeal with fruit was surprisingly good, despite all the signage about griddle food and fried chicken. The breakfast sandwich was delicious and the grits really hit the spot. The ticket here is eating a huge meal at Bertha's and then trekking it next door to Més Que for some World Cup football. Life doesn't get better than greasy food, cold beer and World Cup football. It's a trifecta of bliss in my book. Definitely put this diner on your list if you're out and about near Hertel. Downside is that it's on the small side, so your wait for a table will all boil down to timing (meaning that if you see someone across the street getting out of their car and heading towards Bertha's, you should probably start sprinting to beat them in the door, then look around the dining room desperately, as though you thought you're late to meet some VIP). read more

I have always loved this place for years. Food was great! Hash is delicious, coffee is fresh, prices are great and service is awesome. Nora is usually our waitress she is very pleasant and on point with the coffee, she always makes us feel like regulars. I never write reviews but this place deserves a good one. We only have a few complaints. We have been going a few years since we moved to the neighborhood in 2010. My wife and I went recently and it was so hot inside it was extremely uncomfortable. Wasn't like that any previous summers even the hot ones.We asked if the AC was on she said yes. It didn't seem like it at all. We wanted to sit on the patio but there was no awning or shade at all. I went here on Saturday Octoer 27th. It was pretty busy and packed. I was waiting for about 10 mins. Some more people can after me. So a table opened up. The waitress began to ask the people that came after me if they were next, they said no, so she asked the other couple that came after me if they were next and they said next so she was like who is next and I said I am. She then told one of the couples, since you were next you can sit there since she cant sit in a booth.I didn't want to cause a scene, so I politely walked out. I don't care if its 1 person or 10 a customer is a customer!!! So I wanted to speak to the manager about my experience so I decided to go back when it was less busy. I met the manger and began to explain, but she was busy and asked if she could take my number and call me. 3 days later, no call. I guess this establishment does not value their customers and could care less as long as those $$$$ are coming in. I will NEVER spend my dollars at this place that treated me unfair. read more

I'm normally not one to write a review on any place. I own a business in the area a few blocks away from Bertha's. I opened in April and i was just moving in when I figured I would visit some of the other locally owned restaurants in the area so I stopped in to get a cup of coffee, sat at the counter and was greeted by a charming Spanish lady who was very personable, friendly and outgoing. We had about a 5 minute conversation and I felt comfortable. The cook who looked to be about late 30's early 40's, well groomed, clean shaven, clean white t-shirt and clean jeans on kept his area clean and the food he had put on the counter for the waitress to pick up looked very eye appealing so I thought to myself as I was leaving I have to try this place out for lunch one day but of course they didn't have any take out menus or you can't view their menu online. So it took me a few months to get back there as I couldn't leave my business to go order food and wait for it, that would be a half hour away from my business and thats lost money. So a couple months went by and I got the chance to go and have lunch at Bertha's because my son was home from college and I had him watch the store while I went and got us something to eat. I walked in and the place had about 5 tables occupied, the nice Spanish lady was working as well as the other cook who was working when I went in the first time. I asked the cook what was good and he told me that he had just cooked up a roast and that he had just served a couple beef on wecks so I said well let me think about it a minute and he said sure no problem, here is a menu, look it over and your server will be right over because she was taking a tables order. So as I was sitting there contemplating what to order a couple had gotten up and complemented the cook on how delicious the roast beef was as they were leaving. So I said "sold" let me get two roast beef sandwiches one with fries and one with chips, which they served a single portion of lays still in the bag so they were fresh! I got back to my store and sat down with my son to eat and he says to me, "where did you get this sandwich from?" I told him from Bertha's and he said "Omg! This is the best roast beef I ever had!" So this past Tuesday I thought to myself I want one of those roast beef sandwiches again. So I lock up my shop and I walk down to Bertha's. Not one customer was in there and it was like 12:10pm. It was like I was walking into the twilight zone! The waitress and cook were standing behind the counter just gabbing away bad mouthing the owners it seemed like. I was very appalled and disappointed, awestruck at what I seen! Both the waitress and the cook who I had never seen before covered head to toe in tattoos, grungy clothes, they looked like a couple crack heads! I thought I was in a nightmare for a minute. Then the waitress who spoke like a man said "can I help you?" I just shook my head and told her I was supposed to meet someone at 12:00 but they aren't here and I am not waiting. I then walked out the door and went across the way to get some take out and the guy behind the counter looked at me smiling and Said "you didn't stay long across the street"...It's a freak show over there! I would never let a grungy looking person touch or cook my food! What the hell are the owners thinking when they hire people to work in an open kitchen like that where people can see them? I would never know who the owners are because they have never been there the whole 3 times I was in there. read more

Recently had breakfast at this little place on a friend's referral. I got there earlier than the person I was meeting and sat at a center table for two as it was busy. My dining companion was running late so I enjoyed the ambiance and had coffee. As the diner started to empty out I asked if I might move to a booth. Not hearing very well I assumed that it would be ok. WRONG! I then was told if a table of four came in I would have to move. Ummm, ok even though I was also a paying customer what was the difference? This is exactly what was to transpire. Needless to say, I moved as I was TOLD, my friend arrived, we ordered and had a mediocre breakfast. Would I return, not on your life! Never treated this way before and you certainly do not get the opportunity to ever do it again. Poor customer service. Shame on you! read more
