Came here for breakfast late in a Saturday morning. I ordered the 'big breakfast platter' which had 2 eggs, some ham and 2 pieces of french toast. I also ordered some hash browns on the side and a coffee. Everything was good. The hashbrowns could have been cooked more. French toast was a tid bit dry but I just drenched it in syrup and it was delish. My fiance got a 'rooster omelet' which was the special. It had corned beef hash in an omelet with sriacha and was covered in hollandaise sauce and placed on top of a piece of rye bread. He absolutely loved it. Its a small little diner and everyone was friendly. They have a weird 1 hour limit for refills on beverages and the wait to be served was a little long but overall a good experience. I wish I'd gotten a special... the belgian waffles looked spectacular. read more

A friendly no frills diner that makes you feel at home as soon as you arrive. The service and your order comes out fairly quick when sitting at the counter. However, refills on coffee I found to be inconsistent the two occasions I've visited. First time my coffee cup was filled 3 times, but my last visit only once during breakfast. For the first visit I went with the create your own omelet - cheddar, tomato, and spinach. And had rye toast and hash brown potatoes on the side. The omelet wasn't as big as some of the photos...maybe a little light on the fillings, but still was delicious. The potatoes and toast was just good and satisfying. On my second visit I went with the Big Breakfast Platter, and ordered it with sausage and French toast as the options. Wow! Much better choice than my first visit! The French toast was super thick Italian bread and was very savory. Perfectly cooked and I really could taste the cinnamon....Mmmm cinnamon! The sausage patties were very tasty as well and went perfectly with the scrambled eggs and French toast. Noticed they had chicken and waffles and will have to try that on my next visit. read more

I don't know about you, but my breakfast hunger can be voracious, perhaps even vicious sometimes. The portions here are always ample. The pancakes are just around one foot in diameter and they are delicious. I ordered a side of home fries with my meal (hunger was vicious that day) and received a heaping pile of delightful home fries. After some solid analysis with my girlfriend, we have decided that they must use jumbo eggs, they're huge. The place itself is very cozy and inviting with old school 50's diner decor. The wait staff is always very personable and attentive. If I had an endless budget and a belly that refused to ever get bigger, I would waltz down to Bertha's more often. Bertha's is a great spot to grab breakfast. I've only been in on the weekend and it seems like Saturday mornings are the busiest time. This past Sunday I was in around 10am and didn't have to wait at all. One thing worth noting: if you're by yourself they will make you sit at the counter or one of the tables down the middle. No booth for single riders, regardless of how full/empty it is. This is a solid place to get bacon & eggs, their home fries are a little spicy and always wonderful. Waffles are amazing, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who walks by and smells the wonderful eau d'waffle emanating from the restaurant. There is standard breakfast fare but also a few things that are different. For example, chorizo stuffed banana peppers show up in quite a few dishes, and the "Backwoods Benedict" features a waffle covered in eggs, sausage, and sausage gravy. Completely delicious in a feel-your-arteries-hardening kind of way. It's not all calorie-laden heavy fare though. An ongoing special has been the "Boot Camp Breakfast" (probably catering to the boot camp crowd from next door) with an egg white omelet loaded with veggies and served with fresh fruit. Service has been 90% excellent, quick and friendly in the way that keeps you coming back. Overall definitely recommended for breakfast. read more

NYC style and feel. This is a great breakfast lunch place with lots of the "usual" done well. What's a NYC feel? Tables smushed together like sardines so they can squeeze every single possible chair into the place. If you dine in NYC you know this type of place, where the rent is 100 grand a month and they are grandfathered on the fire codes, so they can seat 200 people in a 50 seat place. If you don't mind bumping chairs with the person behind you, this is a great little, little, diner. read more

No nonsense diner food. They serve both breakfast and lunch from open to close. The portions are generous especially for the price! The location is great too - right next to North Park on Hertel and I've never had a problem with parking during business hours. I am always tempted to get the pancakes. Get the pancakes. Get the pancakes. They are enormous. They would easily hang off the sides of a regular dinner plate. Sadly I didn't get the pancakes the last time I was there. I got the eggs and hash and they are good. On the menu I noticed that the rancheros had siracha served in it. So, as a fan of siracha I asked if I could have some on the side. I put siracha on everything. Ever had siracha on toast with a bit of grape jelly. I never did until here and it was great. It was on my eggs and on my hash and on my potatoes. I might have gone a little overboard with the siracha. But I would have done the same with any hot sauce. The waitresses are great. They have the feel of old Buffalo. Not to say that they are old but that they are down to earth Buffalonians. This is my favourite place to get breakfast on Hertel. The next time I will get the pancakes. They are the best around. They just soak up syrup and butter. Then, I will have a burger. read more

Been coming to berthas since 2007. It's a tiny little place nestled in between a tattoo shop and movie theatre on Hertel. It's literally tiny! It seats probably no more than 30 people at any given time. The food is so incredibly cheap and delicious! The food is prepared right in the front where you can see. It's got all of the breakfast essentials and more. My only complaint is that it's cash only, but I've never been disappointed by the food, cost, or anything! Everything is homemade, everything delicious. I had the corn beef hash which is the best I have ever had hands down. No corned beef I have ever had even comes close to comparing to how good this was. My fiance and I wanted to taste a variety of things so we elected to share a size of tall stack pancakes. What a mistake and blessing that was. I've always heard good things about Bertha's, but I was a little less than amazed at the food. I ordered an omelette with cheddar, mushrooms, peppers and onions which was pretty alright. My boyfriend ordered his omelette with bacon and broccoli and woah - what the heck is up with the broccoli??? He mentioned that it tasted weird, so I tried it. Dang. It was so weird. Tasted like it came out of a can or something...definitely ruined the whole meal. I only had a small piece and the weird taste lingered in my mouth. That being said, the vibe is cool. In the "good ol days" we would call this place a "hole in the wall" diner. Varied menu, with lots of choices.....some unusual. My grilled biscuit topped w a fried egg & sausage gravy pretty decent. The accompanied home fries however, were inedible [UNUSUAL FOR ME TO SKIP A SPUD] ..... I think they deep fry a ton of them & just reheat.....not good, no onion/no butteryness/no taste, just like chewing Styrofoam.......for a cost of $11.95! Definitely NOT diner pricing! Plus cash only? I've upped my review from 4 stars to 5... not because Bertha's is a "5 star restaurant", but because within Bertha's niche (uber casual, down-home, kinda divey, old-school diners), it continues to excel. But if you are there with a group of 4 or 5, be prepared to be asked to leave if you linger over your coffee, and there are people waiting for a table! I've had a bunch of their breakfast items but keep coming back for the Dennis (bacon egg & cheese and a chorizo stuffed banana pepper on sourdough toast, also occasionally comes in a burrito on the specials list). Small, cramped, vintage--exactly what you love in a diner. We got one of the small tables running between the counter and the wall booths, last seat in the house. Servers were friendly and quick to appear and take our order. We got the chicken and waffles, and it was fantastic. The chicken was perfectly crisp, with the gravy-syrup confection (sweet and cinnamon-sugary) a perfect addition to the chicken and waffles. The waffle itself was crispy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. Incredibly filling meal and only $11-12. Cute little diner, delicious food, lovely staff. Have been here for lunch once and breakfast a couple times. Most recently, we called in advance to let them know a party of 8 was on the way and they kept their one large table open for us. Due to a curiosity, I decided to go against this reviewer's two stars and try the place for myself (along with my significant other). We were both VERY pleased--at the food, and presentation of it (I took pictures, I was so impressed) as well as the service. For the price--which was very reasonable--the breakfasts we ordered were awesome!! I would totally recommend this establishment to anyone--and caution you when you read other people's reviews. After hearing endless buzz about this place, I suggested it for a late breakfast one Saturday morning with my boyfriend. I was very disappointed by the quality of the food and the over all price. I ordered the pancakes with two eggs and two pieces of bacon. My boyfriend ordered a polish sausage breakfast with eggs, toast, and home fries. I got the pancakes with strawberries and bananas baked in and they were AMAZING... that is unfortunately where our good experience ended meal-wise. The eggs, which we both ordered sunny side up, were still mostly raw... like clear, raw. The bacon I was served was also not very good. It tasted like ti was on its last leg and had been in the fridge for a LONG time... and I eat a lot of bacon, I'm not picky, but for the first time in my life I gladly didn't finish it. My boyfriends meal, despite the undercooked eggs, was better, but nothing to write home about. So all in all for this meal plus a cup of coffee for each of us cost $30 for 2 people... $40 with tip since the not-quite-slow-but-not-very- quick service and cash only policy was not worth the wait to get change back. I probably won't be back. It really wasn't anything special, especially when for the $30 I spent I could buy two breakfasts for the both of us a few blocks down at Kosta's or Amy's Place. read more

Bertha's decor fits the description of classic 50's diner with checkered floors and red bar spinning bar stools. However, food-wise, you're not going to see the typical heaping, greasy portions (which can be a good or a bad thing). My corned beef hash was a thin pancake-like serving and had some herbs in it that I had never tasted before in a CBH. It came with a side of home-fries, your choice of eggs, and two pieces of toast and was surprisingly filling all for $7. Most importantly, the place is clean unlike grungy run-down Sophia's. Walked to this place on a whim and was pleasantly surprised! It is a veryyyy small place but don't let that steer you away. Being only open a short period of the day adds to the quaintness and homemade feel of breakfast at this joint. The items are fresh and come to you straight off the grill. I find that a rarity in places these days. When I first wrote this review I only made it to this place once but now that has changed and I have became quite the regular!
