Bertha's get an addition star only because of the way the manager handled our not so tasty food this past weekend. My sister was in town visiting and I wanted to take her some place delicious. I had heard great things about Berthas but didn't know too much about the restaurant itself or what they served. After being told there would be an hour wait at two other places, we came over here, my sister ran in and we were told they could seat us right away, awesome. The place is small, SO SO casual, very old school diner feel and there isn't too much seating, so I was very surprised they were able to take us right away around 12:30 on a Sunday. They don't have booze, so that may deter some people interested in a Bloody Mary or mimosa like we most definitely were. We stayed though, and took a booth in the back. Very tough if you have a party larger than four. I thought the booth sat the two of us perfectly, however I did see a family of four come in and fit in our same size booth. There is only one or two other large tables suitable for a bigger family. There is also no standing room in the front of the restaurant without feeling pretty uncomfortable so if there is a wait, your best bet is to come back or wait outside. They have some stools at the bar but it's tight. The menu was taped against the wall at our table and we scanned for something we liked. The omelettes were $9 and change for an omelette and an additional $2 for egg whites, woof. That's almost a $12 omelette, the same price you would find for one at an upscale brunch restaurant. The sides were much more reasonably priced for a diner. I asked for egg white with my omelette and went with mozzarella cheese, mushrooms and onions. It was just alright. I got rye bread on the side and it had seeds which I disliked, if I had known there were seeds, I would have asked for wheat, my mistake though. The home fries were really boring. There was nothing to them, they had no flavor, no seasoning, they were disappointing. My sister got the breakfast burrito and unfortunately could not eat it due to the fact that it was dripping with liquid and so soggy. The entire side of her burrito was sopping wet. We were unsure why this was, figured it was due to the liquid egg substitutes they were most likely using. The egg to "other stuff" ratio was so off. There was SO much egg, no onions or bacon or good stuff. She thought her home fries were fine, but that's also all she ate of her meal. We weren't going to say a word though and our waitress didn't comment on the fact that she hadn't eaten a bite of her burrito. The manager did however come over and ask why we didn't eat the burrito. We told her that it was a bit soggy but not to worry about it because we were full off of potatoes and bread. She asked if we wanted anything else but we declined. The manager ended up taking the burrito off the bill which was definitely the right thing to do because it was untouched and clearly not too appetizing. I thought she handled the situation really well. After leaving Bertha's, I talked to a few of my friends who highly recommended this place and told them about our experience. They assured me that it must have been a fluke because the food here is really good usually. I am going to take their word for it and come here again some other time, try something different. Came in for breakfast with my friend Anna recently, while our favorite place was closed. Berthas is really close to my house, on Hertel and the neighborhood is awesome. I got a breakfast sandwich, bacon and and cheese and it very good. I also got some of the grilled blueberry banana bread. Hot diggity that bread was slammin. I'm a sucker for banana bread and when you throw in the blueberries it just sweetens the deal. The atmosphere in here is pretty cool, like a '50s style diner. My only complaint is that it's small inside, and the booths are kinda small. I'm a bigger dude and sometimes i appreciate the bigger space. But overall i did the vibes here. For weekday goers and early birds, they have a pretty sick deal before 9am- 2 eggs, toast and home fries for $4. Also, you are looking at street parking and they are cash only! read more

I looked at my husband during breakfast and very passionately exclaimed that America shouldn't just be known globally for burgers and hot dogs but that every person who visits should go to a real classic diner to get the full American experience we are proud of. Sorry for the anecdote but this diner does everything right. It's cozy and clean, service is super friendly, they are always refilling your coffee, (they do actual chocolate milk from a carton too NOT Hershey's syrup... Petty I know but this is on my personal good diner checklist, may only be personal cuz I might be the only gal in my late 20s adamant on getting chocolate milk for breakfast) My husband got the blueberry walnut pancakes and they were a big hug on a plate, old school on the griddle they were perfect. I got the rooster omelette which was filled with their home made corned beef hash, and topped with a delicious Hollandaise and a bit of Sriracha, it was Devine. Their home fries are also perfection, well spiced and crispy. It's small so it can get crowded or have a little wait but it's worth it. I love that they have your classic diner staples (and lunch options too) as well as more innovative breakfast specials to satisfy both kinds of breakfast enthusiasts. Perfect for treating yourself to a delicious breakfast or brunch! Went there for brunch with my boyfriend around 1130 not too busy but were greeted with friendly smiles. They have great customer service to make you feel at home. This was my 2nd time here so I had to review it. For a small dinner they can cook!!! I got chicken and waffles which were amazing! They come with a yummy cinnamon sauce instead of plain maple syrup. I could eat a jar of that stuff alone. The waffle was crispy and fluffy and the chicken was seasoned perfectly and crisped to a beautiful golden brown. It comes with 2 eggs also! Soo much food but so good. My boyfriend got the special, Country fried steak with biscuits and gravy and eggs and home fries. As a Western New Yorker, you don't see biscuits and gravy a lot so when I see it's on the menu we definitely had to try it. My aunt is from the south so I know a good biscuits and gravy when I taste it. Not like that Bob Evans stuff you regret getting instantly. Rant over. But seriously this is the dish that gave this restaurant five stars for me. It's that good. Bertha's is a small little diner right next to the North Park Theater. It's kind of a small hole in the wall with seats packed in wherever they can fit but I like that feeling in a diner. It's decor is a nod to the 50s with records and memorabilia on the walls, the classic bars stools. In terms of food, they're very solid! The corned beef and hash I had was made in house. The corned beef was slightly mild in flavor but was nothing that some Frank's couldn't fix. Bertha's home fries are some of the BEST I have ever had, good flavor, nice and crispy on the outside with a soft well cooked inside. Delicious. My boyfriend had the Egg's Benedict which had a decent Hollandaise sauce on it with a good cut of Canadian bacon and he was quite happy with it. It was busy when we were in there around noon but I think it's because Bertha's is well loved by everyone. The owner was in and around working tables and was SUPER nice. Bertha's is cash only, and depending on time of the day you might have trouble finding a seat (as you will with any favorite in Buffalo) but it's worth a stop. So where do I start?!? My husband and I came here to get a late in the day breakfast meal. He and I both ordered the pancake special which came with eggs and meat of choice. In my order I specifically asked for eggs scrambled with american cheese and then bacon. When the eggs came out I immediately...wait let's back up. The pancake was brought out first and it was HUGE folks, HUGE. Like it was massive. So we were very excited to try it. But when the eggs came out, I immediately knew that cheddar was used and not american cheese. When I proceeded to let the waitress know that it was not what I ordered she persisted on telling me that it was american cheese so I just took it. After my first bite, no ma'am it was not. So on to the pancake, it just was not very tasty. My husband had the same opinion and that's major for him because he enjoys things more often than not, especially pancakes! Food wise my omelet was not very good...my cheese was not even melted and the onions and tomatoes seemed to have just been thrown in and not even sautéed at all. One of the great things about moving to a new neighborhood is getting to explore and check out all of the new businesses (which for me means.... restaurants). A friend and I were wandering around Hertel looking for a place for a Saturday brunch when this cute little place caught my eye. Upon walking in I felt immediately warm and welcome. The menu has all sorts of breakfast and lunch choices..... everything from omelets to pancakes to waffles to sandwiches and salads and burgers. It's like one of those small old-fashioned diners where you can see the cooks frying up the potatoes and buttering the toast.... and everything looks and smells so good. I chose the corned beef hash. It came with home-fried potatoes, toast, and two eggs (which I substituted for a fruit cup for an up-charge of $1.75.). The hash was yummy (but I would have preferred if it was fried a bit crisper around the edges). The potatoes were tasty as was my buttered (rye) toast. The fruit was a happy surprise. I ordered it because I simply do not like eggs. I was expecting a sad mixture of melon with perhaps a grape or two.... but no.... this was freshly sliced banana, a bit of wonderfully sweet cantaloupe, fresh strawberries, and pineapple, and a few red grapes. Wow! The meal was great..... but it was made even more delightful when Bertha came to our table to check if everything was okay. What a delightful woman! We ended chatting with her throughout our meal and learning all about the history of the place. I left feeling like a happy old friend (with a full belly). Pointers: Betha's is open from 7-2 Mon-Sat and 8-2 on Sun. It's cash only (but there's an ATM on premises). But my personal favorite is their milkshakes, The serve them in the metal glass they make them in. A local told us that this was the best breakfast place in Buffalo. I don't know if I'd give Bertha the crown, but it was a place with a lot of character located in the heart of the Hertel restaurant corridor, literally right beside the Northpark Theater. First of all, this is a cash-only place. It's got that divey (we don't give a F**) diner decor where the greasy menus are velcro'd onto the wall. Seats are tight and rickety. The waiters were friendly. The food was freshly made and piping hot. A good breakfast of eggs over medium, pancakes and sausage - nothing unique or spectacular. But, if you need to use the restroom..... be prepared to go downstairs through a labyrinth that was clearly the inspiration for the movie SAW. It'd hideous down there, and as you walk through a dark corridor lined by dark rooms to get to the restroom, you'll get glimpses of kitchen staff wearing dirty aprons and plastic buckets of unknown substances sit in the hall. It is a scary journey through the underground. You just want to flee back to the surface and appreciate sunshine and fresh air again. As Hertel explodes with new eats, I really don't see how Bertha can compete when new restaurants have new, clean decor. There is "retro" charm, and then there's a stubborn refusal to invest in a renovation. I also have no idea how that underground passage works for anyone in a wheelchair or crutches. read more

I have to start this review off with.. Man OH Man... Berthas is another place I've had to my Hit List for a while... I made it today and boy oh boy, it was worth it!! When walking in I was a little shocked at how small the place actually is, I can't imagine them having a full house.. it would be horribly tight but the food is worth it.. The waitress was so nice and friendly and went over different things with us because no one had been before.. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles because I've seen the pics and that looked amazing!! The waffle was fluffy and buttery, my eggs were cooked to perfection (over-medium) and the chicken was GREAT!! I also got a side of gravy with my chicken and waffles, which I tried. And it actually was very good. I wouldn't eat it on my entire waffle but it had a good taste. For the price you receive a huge amount of food!! I did taste the pancakes and the potatoes off of the other plates and everything had a great taste.. I will be going back to try other things. read more

Ahh Bertha's. A staple diner not only on hertel, but in Buffalo. With only 10 tables and 5 seats at the bar, it may be tough for you to just walk in and grab a seat. But when you can, it does not disappoint! I am for sure a fan and enjoy returning, but with the parking being inconvenient (street parking on Hertel can be atrocious) and with there being few tables to sit at, it makes it sometimes difficult for me to return. We had a flight to catch so we went here at the time they open on Sunday : 8 am. But they were closed so we decided to wait on the bench for a few minutes. They showed up at 8:07 and said to come back in 15 minutes. Not a great start. When we returned there were only 2 tables with guests. It's a small place and we figured we could still have our breakfast without compromising our travel goal. When I asked the waitress if they had any small meal options (I usually can't eat more than half of what I get), she replied snappishly, "No! You'll have to get the number 1!" So I ordered it without comment and we then waited 20 minutes for scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and toast. It is so easy to make perfect scrambled eggs, yet they brought me over-cooked, dried out eggs, cold toast and over-seasoned potatoes. My partner had the chicken and waffles with eggs and I had the waffles with sausage, eggs and home fries. Everything was done to perfection, with awesome service and quick refills of coffee. This is a cash only business, so we don't come here every weekend, but once every month or so. It is small, but cozy with several booths if you get there early. If you lament the loss of the "diners" in Buffalo with the remodeling of Pano's, Acropolis and Mythos, yet don't want to drive all the way out to Amy's Place, then head down to Bertha's on Hertel, tucked away next to North Park Theater. Everything was fresh and homemade. The coffee was delicious, the staff accommodating and friendly. I HIGHLY recommend the corned beef hash. Best I have ever had because you can tell it is homemade and not out of some pre-mix. It was grilled to perfection, browned and slightly crispy on top. My eggs were also cooked just as I ordered. Their specials looked absolutely amazing and creative. I will be back to try more! The only downside was the food seemed to take a really long time especially considering it was breakfast food. But if the food always comes out that good then I don't mind if it takes longer! Myself and two other people went here for the first time yesterday. The place is small and has RC cola on tap. The Belgian waffles didn't taste like anything. The bacon tasted like it was from the box you get at the store that needs to be microwaved for a few seconds. The hash tasted terrible. The waitress kept interrupting one of my party and we didn't get or food at the same time "because they only turn on one wake iron on during the week". My biggest complaint: we got there at 1:15pm and they close at 2pm. We got our food at about 1:35 and started using heavy industrial strength cleaners right away. We could barely taste our food over the smell of bleach and ammonia. I will never come here again. read more

I really like Bertha's. It's tasty, inexpensive diner food and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The place isn't large so you need to time it right, but once you're in and seated, you're good. At each table, two menus are velcroed to the wall, one with breakfast side facing out and the other with the lunch side facing out. There are also always some specials on the board over the counter. I have a healthy friend who I think was pleasantly surprised to find some pretty healthy options on the breakfast menu. (I've got to admit, I only go for breakfast food. I'm a breakfast fan.) Anyway, Bertha's is pretty straight-forward and so is this review. You should go eat there. read more

I saw that this place existed and was nearby, and also that there was chicken and waffles on the menu. So off we went. This place is super tiny and super packed. We managed to grab a tiny table and got a look at the menu. Service was a tad slow, and she bungled my waffle order (for some reason thought I didn't want gravy at all) but it was super busy and loud, so entirely understandable.
