I honestly didn't know breakfast could be that good. We ordered the corn beef hash, veggie omelette with cheese, and a blueberry pancake. Everything was fresh, made to order, and unbelievable flavorful. The ambiance was very quaint with black and white checked floor, red booths, a bar with swivel chairs, and the refrigerator even had sweet family photos on it. Service was great and the staff was very sweet and personable. It gives the complete vibe of a great, family owned restaurant. We live in Texas but I promise we'll be back. read more

Perfect for treating yourself to a delicious breakfast or brunch! Went there for brunch with my boyfriend around 1130 not too busy but were greeted with friendly smiles. They have great customer service to make you feel at home. This was my 2nd time here so I had to review it. For a small dinner they can cook!!! I got chicken and waffles which were amazing! They come with a yummy cinnamon sauce instead of plain maple syrup. I could eat a jar of that stuff alone. The waffle was crispy and fluffy and the chicken was seasoned perfectly and crisped to a beautiful golden brown. It comes with 2 eggs also! Soo much food but so good. My boyfriend got the special, Country fried steak with biscuits and gravy and eggs and home fries. As a Western New Yorker, you don't see biscuits and gravy a lot so when I see it's on the menu we definitely had to try it. My aunt is from the south so I know a good biscuits and gravy when I taste it. Not like that Bob Evans stuff you regret getting instantly. Rant over. But seriously this is the dish that gave this restaurant five stars for me. It's that good. The best part of this meal was that after a couple coffees, two orange juices, and both of these delicious brunches the bill only came to 30 bucks!!! *They only accept cash the good thing is there's an ATM in the restaurant read more

Bertha's Diner - Diners Near Me - Buffalo, New York

Bertha's is a small little diner right next to the North Park Theater. It's kind of a small hole in the wall with seats packed in wherever they can fit but I like that feeling in a diner. It's decor is a nod to the 50s with records and memorabilia on the walls, the classic bars stools. In terms of food, they're very solid! The corned beef and hash I had was made in house. The corned beef was slightly mild in flavor but was nothing that some Frank's couldn't fix. Bertha's home fries are some of the BEST I have ever had, good flavor, nice and crispy on the outside with a soft well cooked inside. Delicious. My boyfriend had the Egg's Benedict which had a decent Hollandaise sauce on it with a good cut of Canadian bacon and he was quite happy with it. It was busy when we were in there around noon but I think it's because Bertha's is well loved by everyone. The owner was in and around working tables and was SUPER nice. Bertha's is cash only, and depending on time of the day you might have trouble finding a seat (as you will with any favorite in Buffalo) but it's worth a stop. The food is good, service solid and friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy and classic. read more

Came in for breakfast with my friend Anna recently, while our favorite place was closed. Berthas is really close to my house, on Hertel and the neighborhood is awesome. I got a breakfast sandwich, bacon and and cheese and it very good. I also got some of the grilled blueberry banana bread. Hot diggity that bread was slammin. I'm a sucker for banana bread and when you throw in the blueberries it just sweetens the deal. The atmosphere in here is pretty cool, like a '50s style diner. My only complaint is that it's small inside, and the booths are kinda small. I'm a bigger dude and sometimes i appreciate the bigger space. But overall i did the vibes here. For weekday goers and early birds, they have a pretty sick deal before 9am- 2 eggs, toast and home fries for $4. Also, you are looking at street parking and they are cash only! read more

This place is classic Americana at its finest. I looked at my husband during breakfast and very passionately exclaimed that America shouldn't just be known globally for burgers and hot dogs but that every person who visits should go to a real classic diner to get the full American experience we are proud of. Sorry for the anecdote but this diner does everything right. It's cozy and clean, service is super friendly, they are always refilling your coffee, (they do actual chocolate milk from a carton too NOT Hershey's syrup... Petty I know but this is on my personal good diner checklist, may only be personal cuz I might be the only gal in my late 20s adamant on getting chocolate milk for breakfast) My husband got the blueberry walnut pancakes and they were a big hug on a plate, old school on the griddle they were perfect. I got the rooster omelette which was filled with their home made corned beef hash, and topped with a delicious Hollandaise and a bit of Sriracha, it was Devine. Their home fries are also perfection, well spiced and crispy. It's small so it can get crowded or have a little wait but it's worth it. I love that they have your classic diner staples (and lunch options too) as well as more innovative breakfast specials to satisfy both kinds of breakfast enthusiasts. My favorite thing too is that the coziness of the size of the restaurant makes it so you see a lot of strangers smiling or conversing with one another and saying good morning, just like the good old days!! read more

Checked out Bertha's after the Undy Run/Walk today. We ordered eggs and home fries, and we shared the special: cinnamon roll waffle. There's really nothing to complain about. We were seated quickly, the food and coffee were very good, the place was very clean, and pricing was very fair. Love the old school diner feel of this place. Will definitely return for breakfast. read more

So..I've lived in Buffalo for about 2 years now & NEVER have I heard about this small place on Hertel. When I was traveling back from San Francisco, this restaurant was recommend on the airport flight magazine as a must go. So- I decided to check it out. To be honest... -I liked the music the guy was playing outside. -place was very small - food menus hang on the wall (you physically remove it) - the waiter wasn't even sure what they're speciality was - food was ok- but not impressive. So... classic diner type place- but if you want better diner experience go to Lake Effect on Main st. No comparison! read more

Pros: - loved the corned hash - loved the service; friendly & joking staff - cozy little booths - they have groupon deals! $15 for $30 worth of groupons (to use $10 at each visit) Cons: - had to pay cash; I don't believe that they accepted credit cards (?) read more

One of the great things about moving to a new neighborhood is getting to explore and check out all of the new businesses (which for me means.... restaurants). A friend and I were wandering around Hertel looking for a place for a Saturday brunch when this cute little place caught my eye. Upon walking in I felt immediately warm and welcome. The menu has all sorts of breakfast and lunch choices..... everything from omelets to pancakes to waffles to sandwiches and salads and burgers. It's like one of those small old-fashioned diners where you can see the cooks frying up the potatoes and buttering the toast.... and everything looks and smells so good. I chose the corned beef hash. It came with home-fried potatoes, toast, and two eggs (which I substituted for a fruit cup for an up-charge of $1.75.). The hash was yummy (but I would have preferred if it was fried a bit crisper around the edges). The potatoes were tasty as was my buttered (rye) toast. The fruit was a happy surprise. I ordered it because I simply do not like eggs. I was expecting a sad mixture of melon with perhaps a grape or two.... but no.... this was freshly sliced banana, a bit of wonderfully sweet cantaloupe, fresh strawberries, and pineapple, and a few red grapes. Wow! The meal was great..... but it was made even more delightful when Bertha came to our table to check if everything was okay. What a delightful woman! We ended chatting with her throughout our meal and learning all about the history of the place. I left feeling like a happy old friend (with a full belly). Pointers: Betha's is open from 7-2 Mon-Sat and 8-2 on Sun. It's cash only (but there's an ATM on premises). The trip down to the restrooms is a bit "interesting" (think old NYC or European restaurants)... to me it only added to the charm. read more

Was in buffalo and based on the reviews decided to give it a try. The service was a bit slow but the wait staff was very friendly! Food wise my omelet was not very good...my cheese was not even melted and the onions and tomatoes seemed to have just been thrown in and not even sautéed at all. My husband had the breakfast burrito and said he had had better. The saving grace was their home fries and the slice of blueberry banana bread. read more

The place is so cute that it literally sadens me to write such a poop review. I ordered corned beef breakfast and asked for it to be a little cripsy. I'm not exaggerating when I say this lol The hash was burnt, the eggs were burnt, the potatoes were burnt and last but not least.. the toast was burnt. I would never bring that out to a paying customer. read more

Do not let the small space intimidate you or turn you away... ITS WORTH THE WAIT. Hands down the best breakfast food. The staff is always friendly and the food is consistently delicious. So where do I start?!? My husband and I came here to get a late in the day breakfast meal. He and I both ordered the pancake special which came with eggs and meat of choice. In my order I specifically asked for eggs scrambled with american cheese and then bacon. When the eggs came out I immediately...wait let's back up. The pancake was brought out first and it was HUGE folks, HUGE. Like it was massive. So we were very excited to try it. But when the eggs came out, I immediately knew that cheddar was used and not american cheese. When I proceeded to let the waitress know that it was not what I ordered she persisted on telling me that it was american cheese so I just took it. After my first bite, no ma'am it was not. So on to the pancake, it just was not very tasty. My husband had the same opinion and that's major for him because he enjoys things more often than not, especially pancakes! So overall my experience was a disappointment because I actually left hungry. read more

..Due to COVID you can only have 4 people per table which I understand were food reviewers and knew that,we walk to the door open it and the young lady does a count we didn't know the people behind us "also party of 4 " had stepped close and she counted them with us as well, the lady then told me and my family no more than 4 per house hold and would not let us get a word out to let her know that they was not with us just before shutting the door in our face,we was all shocked, there was people we told behind us waiting to get so all in all they lost around 15 customers in 30 seconds.. smh maybe we will get it a try again but I highly doubt it. read more

Berthas is a cute diner located pretty centrally on Hertel ave. Its a great place to stop by for breakfast before going out for the day. But my personal favorite is their milkshakes, The serve them in the metal glass they make them in. And you get a good to cups of milkshake per order ( perfect to share, or to drink up by yourself XD) That combined with the amazing food makes this place an easy 5 stars in my book. read more

A local told us that this was the best breakfast place in Buffalo. I don't know if I'd give Bertha the crown, but it was a place with a lot of character located in the heart of the Hertel restaurant corridor, literally right beside the Northpark Theater. First of all, this is a cash-only place. It's got that divey (we don't give a F**) diner decor where the greasy menus are velcro'd onto the wall. Seats are tight and rickety. The waiters were friendly. The food was freshly made and piping hot. A good breakfast of eggs over medium, pancakes and sausage - nothing unique or spectacular. But, if you need to use the restroom..... be prepared to go downstairs through a labyrinth that was clearly the inspiration for the movie SAW. It'd hideous down there, and as you walk through a dark corridor lined by dark rooms to get to the restroom, you'll get glimpses of kitchen staff wearing dirty aprons and plastic buckets of unknown substances sit in the hall. It is a scary journey through the underground. You just want to flee back to the surface and appreciate sunshine and fresh air again. As Hertel explodes with new eats, I really don't see how Bertha can compete when new restaurants have new, clean decor. There is "retro" charm, and then there's a stubborn refusal to invest in a renovation. I also have no idea how that underground passage works for anyone in a wheelchair or crutches. read more

I have to start this review off with.. Man OH Man... Berthas is another place I've had to my Hit List for a while... I made it today and boy oh boy, it was worth it!! When walking in I was a little shocked at how small the place actually is, I can't imagine them having a full house.. it would be horribly tight but the food is worth it.. The waitress was so nice and friendly and went over different things with us because no one had been before.. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles because I've seen the pics and that looked amazing!! The waffle was fluffy and buttery, my eggs were cooked to perfection (over-medium) and the chicken was GREAT!! I also got a side of gravy with my chicken and waffles, which I tried. And it actually was very good. I wouldn't eat it on my entire waffle but it had a good taste. For the price you receive a huge amount of food!! I did taste the pancakes and the potatoes off of the other plates and everything had a great taste.. I will be going back to try other things. read more

Ahh Bertha's. A staple diner not only on hertel, but in Buffalo. With only 10 tables and 5 seats at the bar, it may be tough for you to just walk in and grab a seat. But when you can, it does not disappoint! I am for sure a fan and enjoy returning, but with the parking being inconvenient (street parking on Hertel can be atrocious) and with there being few tables to sit at, it makes it sometimes difficult for me to return. But, the food is exactly what you would expect for a diner this size. Decent prices too! Go in confidence! read more

We had a flight to catch so we went here at the time they open on Sunday : 8 am. But they were closed so we decided to wait on the bench for a few minutes. They showed up at 8:07 and said to come back in 15 minutes. Not a great start. When we returned there were only 2 tables with guests. It's a small place and we figured we could still have our breakfast without compromising our travel goal. When I asked the waitress if they had any small meal options (I usually can't eat more than half of what I get), she replied snappishly, "No! You'll have to get the number 1!" So I ordered it without comment and we then waited 20 minutes for scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and toast. It is so easy to make perfect scrambled eggs, yet they brought me over-cooked, dried out eggs, cold toast and over-seasoned potatoes. I get the feeling these people don't like their jobs or customers very much. read more

Breakfast is my favorite meal and retro dinner Bertha's is in my top three favorite places to eat breakfast at in Buffalo. Bertha's is pretty small so make sure you get there early or after the typical breakfast swarm. The food is made to order and always delicious and delightful - also one of the best cups of coffee around. Plus the menus velcro to the wall - how awesome is that? Plus, Hertel Ave is also one of my favorite places with fantastic second hand bookstores and specialty shops - nothing is better than shoveling in the food at Bertha's and walking it off around Hertel Ave. afterwards. read more

If you lament the loss of the "diners" in Buffalo with the remodeling of Pano's, Acropolis and Mythos, yet don't want to drive all the way out to Amy's Place, then head down to Bertha's on Hertel, tucked away next to North Park Theater. Everything was fresh and homemade. The coffee was delicious, the staff accommodating and friendly. I HIGHLY recommend the corned beef hash. Best I have ever had because you can tell it is homemade and not out of some pre-mix. It was grilled to perfection, browned and slightly crispy on top. My eggs were also cooked just as I ordered. Their specials looked absolutely amazing and creative. I will be back to try more! The only downside was the food seemed to take a really long time especially considering it was breakfast food. But if the food always comes out that good then I don't mind if it takes longer! In sum: small and cozy retro diner feel, family owned and operated, friendly, fresh and homemade delicious food. read more

This place is what a diner should be: cozy, inexpensive, delicious food. I had the two egg omelette over a salad with a side of Canadian bacon because, well, I had never heard of this combo and wanted to try it. It was really tasty. The eggs were cooked exactly right. No heat lamp to dry them out. And the Canadian bacon was amazing. The service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a rush. And the waitress was super nice. I would go back any time! read more

We had this delicious and filling breakfast this morning at Bertha's Diner, one of our regular spots. My partner had the chicken and waffles with eggs and I had the waffles with sausage, eggs and home fries. Everything was done to perfection, with awesome service and quick refills of coffee. This is a cash only business, so we don't come here every weekend, but once every month or so. It is small, but cozy with several booths if you get there early. There were 7 people that left while we were there due yo limited seating. It may be time to expand! read more

Myself and two other people went here for the first time yesterday. The place is small and has RC cola on tap. The Belgian waffles didn't taste like anything. The bacon tasted like it was from the box you get at the store that needs to be microwaved for a few seconds. The hash tasted terrible. The waitress kept interrupting one of my party and we didn't get or food at the same time "because they only turn on one wake iron on during the week". My biggest complaint: we got there at 1:15pm and they close at 2pm. We got our food at about 1:35 and started using heavy industrial strength cleaners right away. We could barely taste our food over the smell of bleach and ammonia. I will never come here again. read more

Chicken and waffles to die for! It's small so make sure you get there early for a seat.

It was Saturday morning, and the two of us weren't quite hung over from the previous night's escapades, but we were in serious need of getting food in our stomachs. I saw that this place existed and was nearby, and also that there was chicken and waffles on the menu. So off we went. This place is super tiny and super packed. We managed to grab a tiny table and got a look at the menu. Service was a tad slow, and she bungled my waffle order (for some reason thought I didn't want gravy at all) but it was super busy and loud, so entirely understandable. Lee's french toast was a little on the tough side, but overall I think this was a great breakfast. read more

Came here for breakfast late in a Saturday morning. I ordered the 'big breakfast platter' which had 2 eggs, some ham and 2 pieces of french toast. I also ordered some hash browns on the side and a coffee. Everything was good. The hashbrowns could have been cooked more. French toast was a tid bit dry but I just drenched it in syrup and it was delish. My fiance got a 'rooster omelet' which was the special. It had corned beef hash in an omelet with sriacha and was covered in hollandaise sauce and placed on top of a piece of rye bread. He absolutely loved it. Its a small little diner and everyone was friendly. They have a weird 1 hour limit for refills on beverages and the wait to be served was a little long but overall a good experience. I wish I'd gotten a special... the belgian waffles looked spectacular. read more

I really like Bertha's. It's tasty, inexpensive diner food and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The place isn't large so you need to time it right, but once you're in and seated, you're good. At each table, two menus are velcroed to the wall, one with breakfast side facing out and the other with the lunch side facing out. There are also always some specials on the board over the counter. I have a healthy friend who I think was pleasantly surprised to find some pretty healthy options on the breakfast menu. (I've got to admit, I only go for breakfast food. I'm a breakfast fan.) Anyway, Bertha's is pretty straight-forward and so is this review. You should go eat there. read more

A friendly no frills diner that makes you feel at home as soon as you arrive. The service and your order comes out fairly quick when sitting at the counter. However, refills on coffee I found to be inconsistent the two occasions I've visited. First time my coffee cup was filled 3 times, but my last visit only once during breakfast. For the first visit I went with the create your own omelet - cheddar, tomato, and spinach. And had rye toast and hash brown potatoes on the side. The omelet wasn't as big as some of the photos...maybe a little light on the fillings, but still was delicious. The potatoes and toast was just good and satisfying. On my second visit I went with the Big Breakfast Platter, and ordered it with sausage and French toast as the options. Wow! Much better choice than my first visit! The French toast was super thick Italian bread and was very savory. Perfectly cooked and I really could taste the cinnamon....Mmmm cinnamon! The sausage patties were very tasty as well and went perfectly with the scrambled eggs and French toast. Noticed they had chicken and waffles and will have to try that on my next visit. read more
