Our party of seven loved our first time at Bertha's. Douglass (the manager?) was welcoming and attentive. Here's what we appreciated: *** Super fresh & healthy ingredients *** Creative versions of sandwiches/salads *** Wheelchair-friendly *** Happy & efficient waitstaff *** Neighborhood feel, "even in a strip mall" I had the Thai Chicken Salad (pictured) w/ lots of lettuce, yellow peppers, chicken, carrots, peanuts & tasty peanut dressing. The rest of our party chose "the 1/2 and 1/2:" 1/2 sandwich + 1/2 salad; the Roasted Turkey sandwich; and the Club Sandwich. Sandwiches came with cookies which my peers donated to me, since they felt sorry for me with my healthy salad. Haha. Their cheesecake menu is off the hook: flavors include Smore, Baklava, Chocolate Peanut Butter, etc. Since I'm a dessert-first girl, I eyed their lineup & picked out my cheesecake flavor but then was "devastated" to learn that those are special order, not available in the dessert case on a regular basis. So just telling you now, so you don't get your heart set on one of those. Bertha's offers other rotating desserts like Banana Bread Pudding, Red Velvet Cupcakes & Lemon Bars, so don't despair, you can definitely get your dessert fix. Super Perk: breakfast menu is served until 1 pm on Saturdays. Definitely coming back to try Bertha's is a local star and we are so happy to patronize them. P.S. Came in for a quick bite. They have a nice little outdoor seating area in addition to their indoor seating options. They have a great wrap menu (I missed bfast, which they stop serving at 11am) and I got the Cobb wrap, which was filling and tasty. It comes with a little mini cookie, too. So, a nice included "dessert". Service was courteous and quick and I appreciated that since the soda offered is bottled they gave the option of a side of a cup of ice. What an amazing cafe to visit while on this side of town. I had the turkey sandwich that came with a plethora of veggies! It was delicious! Service was fast & correct to my specifications. I found this little gem on Yelp .. after reading some of the reviews and taking a peek at all the pics .. (umm yummy!!) I decided to check it off my bookmark list and give it a try.. I am so glad I did.. I will be adding this place to my go to spots when I'm in this part of town.. Cute interior with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating .. the baked goods display case was stocked with lots of amazing looking treats (including lemon bars!!) On today's visit i had the lunch special .. 1/2 any salad on the menu and 1/2 any sandwich on the menu (you can also get 1/2 soup instead ) at $8.99 it's served with a cookie and bag of chips.. not bad! I chose the turkey sandwich and the harvest salad .. both items were full of green veggies .. the salad had chopped crunchy green apple, candied walnuts & blue cheese.. the bread on the sandwich was really good ., the sandwich was stuffed with meat and veggies.. A true staple of Arcadia Lite. In fact, I dare you to find a better sandwich joint in this hood. You won't. Their tuna sandwich is absolutely lights out. I don't know if they put something "special" in it, or if it's just the diced Granny Smith apples they mix into it, but holy hell, it's the best tuna sandwich I've ever had. Although, I often run into the predicament of indecisiveness when choosing between getting that and the Bertha's Club, because that crunch you get when you take that delicious first bite is hard to be. So yes, I usually will just get them both... and eat them... both. I advise you to do the same. Oh, and their sweet treats are delectable too. Besides the soft double chocolate chocolate chip cookie they daintily place in your sandwich wrapper, they also have a wide variety of other treats. I'd be lying if I said their banana cheesecake wasn't in the top 3 desserts I've ever had, and would also be lying if I said my wife doesn't mercilessly beat me if I come home without one of their peanut butter brownies... so give those a shot too. Oh, and for some reason their homemade lemonade is the absolute chronic as well. For tart lemonade seekers like myself, Bertha's lemonade tickles the right taste buds. 2 sandwiches, 2 cookies, a banana cheesecake, peanut butter brownie, lemonade, and 2,000 calories later, thoughts of an afternoon nap and fasting for 24 hours have seemingly crept into my brain... but it'll be well worth it. read more

The lady upfront was so kind and energetic, not phased one bit by the last minute order. She even went as far as offering me some tea on the house before they got rid of the rest for close. This little hidden gem was a great find. I tried the roasted veggie sandwich, only disappointment isn't more veggies, there were only roasted red peppers and asparagus, BUT, it has pesto and arugula and is a bit spicy and delicious. Another dial-a-realtor-cliche is getting the worst property in the best neighborhood. Usually if you don't follow these guidelines you may have a long hard road ahead. Well So I thought, Bertha's Cafe moved from their location at 40th Street and Thomas to a hidden corner at 32nd Street and Indian School, boy was I wrong. First step through the door you will be surprised that the carpet doesn't match the drapes, so to speak. The small space is filled with charming farm and bistro tables and a large case filled with delectable baked treats beckons you for serious consideration. It seems that even at a perceived bad location, Bertha's is one of the best sandwich places that you've never heard of. Aside from the baked goods, Bertha's offers generously stuffed sandwiches, ample sized salads and a rotating soup menu. The Asparagus and Havarti Panini is Bertha's signature sandwich and for good reason, its killer. Stacked onto fresh baked MJ Bakery bread is a composition of oven roasted asparagus, roasted red peppers, pesto mayo and havarti cheese. I opted to upgrade my sandwich with slices of roasted chicken breast which took something great and made it better. The crispy edges of the grilled bread combined with the salty-sweet flavors of meat, veggies and cheese made for sandwich perfection. I am still thinking about the Club Sandwich with its roasted turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and cheddar cheese. It's a classic that has only been improved with plenty of quality ingredients. All sandwiches are simply served with a sinful chocolate cookie, so you might want to add a small side salad to your meal. I ordered the Pesto Pasta and Peas as well as the Dill Potato Salad. Both salads smelled great from the fragrance of fresh basil to the sharp earthy dill, but were a let down when the lack of salt and pepper left these both fairly bland. The problem was easily fixed with a few shakes of each. Salads are fresh and crisp starting with the Goat Cheese and Roasted Red Pepper Salad. A pile of mixed greens is topped with pungent goat cheese, sweet roasted red peppers, tart sun-dried tomatoes and savory pesto was a hit. Thai Chicken Salad was another favorite loaded with crunchy bits of carrots, cabbage, cucumbers, peanuts, green onions and bell peppers. On top was sliced chicken breast, tomatoes and served with a side of spicy peanut dressing. While I loved the chocolate cookie that came with my sandwich, I nearly had a food-gasm when I took my first taste of Bertha's Caramel Toffee Bar. The chewy madness starts with chocolate chip cookie dough then it's spiked with loads of Heath bar pieces, caramel and white chocolate chips, so wrong yet so right. I wonder how busy Bertha's would have been opened in a prime location? With a lunch line nearly out the door on my last visit, one can only imagine. read more

The location is tucked in a corner in the plaza. We almost missed it. It is this little cute place and dishes up awesome desserts and food. I had the Sausage and Egg Sandwich (Sausage, cheddar cheese and mayo. Served on a English muffin with baked eggs). The muffin was so soft it was GOOD. I've been coming here since they were located near 40th St and Thomas Rd. This review loses two stars though because I called to place a phone order for a single wrap and was told the wait would be 25 minutes because there was a major rush. I walked in no more than 5 minutes later (figuring I would just wait it out) to open tables, no line, and four people by the registers not doing a whole lot. Again, I love love love the food here. Finally made it to Berthas, and little did we know it's 5 mins from my house! The lunch special is a great deal- 1/2 salad and sandwich or 1/2 soup for less than $10. It's also served with free chips and cookie. The Thai chicken salad has a delicious peanut dressing and fresh ingredients, but my favorite was the roasted turkey sandwich. Bertha's is definitely a hidden gem in Phoenix. If you are looking for a quality sandwich spot and don't want to go to your typical chain sandwich spot then you check out Bertha's. All of their stuff is homemade in house and you can taste the quality of their ingredients. My wife and I tried their turkey sandwich with bacon and their pesto mayo. Super good. This cafe is a hidden treasure for breakfast and lunch. Plenty of seating inside and out on the patio. There is a glass case full of fresh pastries and cookies. Sandwiches and other items are fresh made to order. Almost everything here is made in house from scratch including dressings, sauces and desserts. I've had the Turkey Jalapeño Egg Sandwich, Roasted Tomato Egg Pesto Sandwich and the Thai Chicken Wrap. All of these were so fresh and delicious. For breakfast sandwich, some might say it is slightly expensive at $6.45. I mean I love Starbucks breakfast egg sausage sandwiches and they cost at around $3.50. But I felt that Bertha's egg sandwich was worth every penny. It was a super gourmet egg sandwich at its best. My sandwich came with 2 eggs, roasted tomatoes, pesto sauce, a generous amount of arugula, and havarti cheese on English muffin. Despite not having any real meat (sausage, bacon, etc.) on it, it tasted so delicious!!! Havarti was gooey and I loved the fresh arugula and hot eggs. I could have this egg sandwich once every other week. HOWEVER, was their coffee machine broken? That's my only complaint here.
