My only caution is to not take the latest available appointment slot. My girlfriend had an appointment that got bumped because earlier jobs ran long. These guys are great. Got in without an appointment for two cars. Just called and asked if they had space, and they said to come along. Used an online coupon to get a discount for both, which was also great. One car passed with no problem, the other needed some repairs, which was sad, but oh well, and I kind of expected it. Was able to bring the other one back for a no extra cost check within 30 days, and after two checks (it needed to run the equipment a bit more to reset it after the repair) it passed and they submitted the materials to DMV. Today at 3:30 pm I was parked outside Berkeley High when I suddenly remembered that we had a DMV appointment in a day and a half and I hadn't yet gotten our car smogged. I called up our wonderful mechanic, Franklin Yng (of Frank's Engineering on University @ Chestnut), and he told me that he now refers all his clients to "Berkeley Smog on Carleton". Armed with only my cell phone, I found their site and saw that they give a 20% (I think) discount for making an appointment online. I made one for 4:15 pm, and then I clicked back to my original Google search. Then I spotted a Yelp review that mentioned using a Groupon. "I wonder if they're still available?" I thought. Ig oogled Groupon + "Berkeley Smog" and there it was -- success! Result: I showed up 15 minutes early, and a nice guy in a Giants cap took care of my car right away. There's a small waiting room where I spent probably all of 6 minutes while he did his magic. We chatted baseball, and I handed him my phone with the Groupon showing. He redeemed it himself, and said, "That'll be $8.25." Turns out that my $24 Groupon paid for the entire $61 smog test -- less only the state certification fee ($8.25). Woohoo! I'll be back in two years, and in the meantime I'll spread the word to all my friends. Thanks, Berkeley Smog... and YELP! P.S. The chocolate caramel on my steering wheel was a welcome surprise! This is the best smog center I've been to! I came in with a coupon I found online for like 24 bucks and that's how much I was charged, all together with tax fee and all I paid $32.25 The guy that helped me was so nice and friendly, the waiting area is fairly decent, and it all took about 5-10 minutes. They also left a little chocolate and a cute smiley face napkin on my dashboard! I don't know it I had just been going to the worst smog check centers before ( they take forever, no waiting area, and I remember paying around $70) but this place is the best! read more

If there was an option to rate this as negative 5 star, I would definitely do so. I made an appointment for Monday, 5:20 pm. The person who booked it for me Saturday morning, said the place is working till 6 pm and latest available appointment would be 5:20 pm. I arrived 5:23, driving 40 miles from San Ramon to Berkeley, they say they do not accept my car, because they close at 5:30. I am 100% sure that my appointment was for 5:20, he says it was 5:15!!! I say your colleague said you are here till 6, he says I am here some days till 6pm, But not today. read more

Fast, friendly, cheap, and easy. What else could I ask for? Dropping off takes a couple minutes to fill out paperwork. The test itself takes about 15 minutes once they get your car on the rollers. You can visit the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society (across the street) for some puppy love while you wait , or you can get old-school Mexican at Juans (across the street), or a mighty decent sandwich, coffee, and a pastry at Westside Bakery Cafe (1 block north). Check-in with the Yelp app for a $40 smog test (plus 8.25 for the certificate). Get a free re-test within 30 days if you don't pass. (but don't worry, I'm sure you'll pass). read more

Berkeley Smog's online appointment system is super easy to use, and I had no problem scheduling a check for a Thursday afternoon. I knew I was the last appointment of the day and made a conscious effort to get there on time, but of course I predictably ended up arriving a few minutes late. I apologized to the employee on duty and he jokingly gave me some shit but about it, but didn't really mind. The smog check took ten minutes flat, and they were super friendly and upbeat. Twelve minutes after arriving, I had paid and was out the door, ready to write up a five star review. However, when I got back to my car there was a Ghirardelli Chocolate and a "happy smogging" napkin on my dashboard. Give the shop eight stars yo!! read more

Great service! I made an appointment online last night for 9am today. Easy to navigate website and I know exactly what I'm paying for before I go there. I arrived this morning around 8:40 and was helped almost immediately. The car was all done and ready for me by 9:15. The man who helped me was friendly and upbeat which I value a lot as a member of the retail work world. The icing on the cake was that I found a chocolate and napkin on my dashboard once I got back into my car! To think that a smog shop would put forth such effort to be over the top in service and care helps me put into perspective that a little goes such a long way into making a customer loyal and feel appreciated. I want to thank fellow yelpers who helped me find this place. My registration is due this week and I cringe when it comes to dealing with my car. I always feel like I'm going to get taken when it comes to cars just because I'm a female. This place was a god send. Folks were right, I was done in less than 10 minutes! Just enough time to sit down outside and browse through yelp listings for 3 places on my phone. I was tempted to run across the street to look at the Berkeley Animal shelter, but my car was done in a blink of an eye. Quick, painless, and they accept credit cards. Real solid place for smog check. Fast, friendly, in & out in less than 20 minutes if you make an appt in advance, and if you don't drive a bucket that needs retest or meet other DMV requirements. There's a Groupon offer out there, or you can check in on Yelp & use one of the Yelp App offers after you check in. I've been to other smog test centers on/around San Pablo in the Berkeley/Albany area, this place is definitely strong to quite strong. Then again, if you're visiting smog test centers more than once in a blue moon, might be time for a new whip. read more

SUPER QUICK AND FRIENDLY SERVICE! I have taken my rx8 here twice for a smog check. I work in Berkeley so I conveniently cruise here during my lunch hour, Drop off my car for the smog test, cross the street and eat lunch at Juan's. It's expensive, you wait around for no reason, the guy's a jerk, you fry outside in the sun, and you leave hungry. If only there was a smog test center that solved all those problems... Boom!
