Quick and efficient. Appreciate that they don't have any conflict of interests in screening. Staff at the desk was very friendly and helpful. Was nice to get a discount for booking online. read more

This is my second time at Berkeley Smog Test Only for my 2002 BMW. Both times I have been very impressed with the service - easy to make appointment on the web, convenient location off freeway, attentive to customer requests and interaction, in and out quickly, reasonable price. Overall, I give them A+ read more

update 2022 : After 16 years that I've been coming here (and to the previous location on Carlton), it's still the best. Jesse is fast, efficient and friendly. read more

Jessie is always awesome. Quick, efficient, reasonably priced, never sugarcoats anything. Go to him, he's the one to serve you right the first time vs 100 others up and down San Pablo Ave who suck at what they do. read more

Quick, helpful friendly and seamless process to get an out of state car that I bought smogged and transferred into my name and registered in CALIFORNIA! Thanks for your help read more

Recently moved back to Cali from Tejas. My car and van were in need of all the bells and whistles to get them registered. I came across BSTOC after noticing 880+ five star reviews. I figure they ALL can't be wrong. Jessie, part owner of the business was on duty when I came in. SUPER friendly guy!!! He accepted my $19 Groupon and asked why the smog. I explained my situation. He said for an additional $50, I can get EVERYTHING done without having to visit and navigate the local DMV. I didn't think twice and was out with Cali plates and stickers in 15 minutes! NO LIE!!! This is an honest business that makes things affordable and easy! I HIGHLY recommended them! Peace read more

Fast, friendly service. I can't recommend this place enough. I made an appointment online and received a discount, got to their place and was helped immediately, guy who helped me was great at his job. Oh, and they give you chocolate at the end :) I will definitely be back! read more

Fast, convenient and great customer obsession. My test was done in about 5 minutes and the only surprise i had was that i found a napkin with a delicious chocolate filled with caramel inside.. LOL !! Recommend to anyone looking for a smog test. read more

I've used this business for many years. Jess is tops. The service is always timely, efficient, professional and friendly.

Never a wait. This smog center always takes care of the customer expeditiously!!!!!

When I brought my car in to be smogged, it didn't pass. This was a surprise, but the man working at the center explained that the failure might be due to recent repair that was done on the car elsewhere, so he advised me to take the car out and drive it for 100 to 200 miles. He gave me a form that said I had paid and that the retest would be free. I went out and drove for about 150 miles, and the car failed again! A different man working at the center said that I needed to drive it a little more. So I went out and drove another 50 miles, and got another free retest when I went back. This time I passed! I didn't have to wait any of the times I came, and the employees were friendly, efficient, and professional. They also registered my car for me and gave me my registration sticker. Great service overall! read more

Quick and easy even during COVID-19. In and out in about 15 mins. Attendant was very helpful.

Got a GroupOn here for $20 and it was well worth it. Real simple and real fast. Was in and out in 10-15 minutes, the whole process went smoothly. Leaving a chocolate on your dashboard was a cool touch. I would definitely come back here again. read more

I got a great deal on a groupon for this place and I'm so happy with my service! I was hoping I could just go without an appointment as I have a toddler and appointments aren't our thing but I was able to go online and schedule an appointment an hour out, which is about how long it takes us to get out the house anyway! I got there about 20 minutes early and they were able to take me as soon as I got there. Went for a walk with my baby and they were done in 10 minutes. The gentleman working there was also super sweet. AND we got chocolates! Would definitely recommend! read more

Exactly what you want for a smog test. Booking online was super fast and easy, I was able to get an appointment same day. Staff was friendly and efficient, no fuss and before I knew it it was done! Would definitely go back the next time I need to get my smog checked. read more

I used a Groupon and booked my appointment online which was very easy. When I arrived, staff was super friendly and informative. The whole process was quick and pain free, and to top it off they left me a small ghiradelli's chocolate on my steering wheel. I'll definitely be back! read more

Simple, effective, well-priced. This location took care of my smog check and honestly exceeded my expectations. I made an appointment online which was pretty painless; there were numerous appointments available and I took the one that fit my schedule best. I also used a Groupon which was the best deal in town ($20 smog check plus 8.25 CA fees--can't beat it). One thing to note--even though it says to put the Groupon voucher number in the comments for the appt, I recommend NOT doing this. I followed these instructions and when I went to shop a few days later, my groupon had been marked as redeemed by them already....if I didn't have a screenshot and they weren't understanding, I would have been screwed. As for time it takes to get in and out, this place was truly 5 stars. I entered the lot at 11am, and left at 1115am! It's a rare thing indeed for any service on a car to be done so fast, and it was greatly appreciated. They even put a small Ghirardelli chocolate on the dash when they were finished as a thank you--what a nice touch. Definitely should be everyone's go to for smog checks in the east bay! read more

They are incredibly quick. I go here every year for my smog and car registration renewal. I wil never go to the DMV for registration renewal again. read more

I never write reviews, but my experience was so fantastic, I'm making an exception. They were so efficient, polite and helpful, I couldn't believe it. Often in the past I've gotten attitude from merchants when using a Groupon, but not it this case. I would definitely recommend them if you are in or near to their operation on San Pablo in Berkeley. I traveled from San Francisco there because I had seen several positive reviews and I wasn't disappointed in the least. read more

Excellent. Fast, courteous and professional. There were no hidden charges besides what I paid for the voucher (and of course the DMV fee that everyone has to pay). I came here two years ago for a smog test, did it this year again, and will come back in two years. It is worth driving all the way from San Francisco. read more

I went in on a Friday in the morning. By the time I picked a magazine to read while waiting, the smog was finished! So quick! They gave a good discount and left a chocolate on my car seat. They also offer DMV registration services starting at $25. I am really impressed. read more

Their scheduling info is great and everything I read indicated that they could service my RV (27' long 10.5' high. I left a message asking them to call me I also left a phone message asking them to confirm they could really take my vehicle. Clearly their website needs to be updated because they told me they USED to be able to take them, but can't now. Really disappointed. read more

He's so nice. Wonderful customer service, very accommodating and polite. He even left a chocolate in my car for me!! Will definitely go back! Scheduling appointment online is easy. Look for discounted rate. read more

I read yelp reviews before I purchased their Groupon and obviously decided to travel from Hayward to Berkeley. As I filled out light paperwork, he smog'd the car. We were in and out in about 10-15 minutes. And giving that I had my two children with me, I was extremely thankful for him to speed my process along. I appreciated the clearness in the Groupon details, they wanted an online appointment and the extra fees were explained before I purchased. So, no surprises. The website has deals as well, I suggest check them out. read more

I had a LV voucher for this place. It's how I usually take care of my smog tests. This place is the only place so far that's been super quick and efficient. There was no wait and Jesse (I think that was his name) was so helpful in seeing me right away as I was very early for my appointment and already on a time crunch to get to where I needed to be. I will definitely be coming back. Super recommend! read more

Beats the old adage about needing to choose only two between cheap, fast, and good. They nail all three. Friendly, too for a fourth. Off the main road which explains the low prices and the absence of a wait. This is the place from now on. read more

Today at 3:30 pm I was parked outside Berkeley High when I suddenly remembered that we had a DMV appointment in a day and a half and I hadn't yet gotten our car smogged. I called up our wonderful mechanic, Franklin Yng (of Frank's Engineering on University @ Chestnut), and he told me that he now refers all his clients to "Berkeley Smog on Carleton". Armed with only my cell phone, I found their site and saw that they give a 20% (I think) discount for making an appointment online. I made one for 4:15 pm, and then I clicked back to my original Google search. Then I spotted a Yelp review that mentioned using a Groupon. "I wonder if they're still available?" I thought. Ig oogled Groupon + "Berkeley Smog" and there it was -- success! Result: I showed up 15 minutes early, and a nice guy in a Giants cap took care of my car right away. There's a small waiting room where I spent probably all of 6 minutes while he did his magic. We chatted baseball, and I handed him my phone with the Groupon showing. He redeemed it himself, and said, "That'll be $8.25." Turns out that my $24 Groupon paid for the entire $61 smog test -- less only the state certification fee ($8.25). Woohoo! I'll be back in two years, and in the meantime I'll spread the word to all my friends. Thanks, Berkeley Smog... and YELP! P.S. The chocolate caramel on my steering wheel was a welcome surprise! And it's not as if I'd suffered for it. read more

If there was an option to rate this as negative 5 star, I would definitely do so. I made an appointment for Monday, 5:20 pm. The person who booked it for me Saturday morning, said the place is working till 6 pm and latest available appointment would be 5:20 pm. I arrived 5:23, driving 40 miles from San Ramon to Berkeley, they say they do not accept my car, because they close at 5:30. I am 100% sure that my appointment was for 5:20, he says it was 5:15!!! I say your colleague said you are here till 6, he says I am here some days till 6pm, But not today. read more

Fast, friendly, cheap, and easy. What else could I ask for? Dropping off takes a couple minutes to fill out paperwork. The test itself takes about 15 minutes once they get your car on the rollers. You can visit the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society (across the street) for some puppy love while you wait , or you can get old-school Mexican at Juans (across the street), or a mighty decent sandwich, coffee, and a pastry at Westside Bakery Cafe (1 block north). Check-in with the Yelp app for a $40 smog test (plus 8.25 for the certificate). Get a free re-test within 30 days if you don't pass. (but don't worry, I'm sure you'll pass). read more

Total rip off. Got a groupon and nowhere did it say that an older car would be subjected to double the fee at the shop. My group on was for $29. I show up, they test it and after it passed charge me an extra $25 for "an older car" (1998). Stay away from this place! Total con. True bait and switch. read more

I found this place in a pinch, and I am happy I did. In and out quickly, reasonable price (with a yelp check-in) and a friendly tech. The chocolate was yummy, too. They also handled my registration. Berkeley Smog Test Only Center - Smog Check Stations Near Me - Berkeley, California

Berkeley Smog's online appointment system is super easy to use, and I had no problem scheduling a check for a Thursday afternoon. I knew I was the last appointment of the day and made a conscious effort to get there on time, but of course I predictably ended up arriving a few minutes late. I apologized to the employee on duty and he jokingly gave me some shit but about it, but didn't really mind. The smog check took ten minutes flat, and they were super friendly and upbeat. Twelve minutes after arriving, I had paid and was out the door, ready to write up a five star review. However, when I got back to my car there was a Ghirardelli Chocolate and a "happy smogging" napkin on my dashboard. Give the shop eight stars yo!! read more

Great service! I made an appointment online last night for 9am today. Easy to navigate website and I know exactly what I'm paying for before I go there. I arrived this morning around 8:40 and was helped almost immediately. The car was all done and ready for me by 9:15. The man who helped me was friendly and upbeat which I value a lot as a member of the retail work world. The icing on the cake was that I found a chocolate and napkin on my dashboard once I got back into my car! To think that a smog shop would put forth such effort to be over the top in service and care helps me put into perspective that a little goes such a long way into making a customer loyal and feel appreciated. I know I'll be back for my next smog and will advise anyone who needs a smog check to get it at this location. Tops in my book and thank you again for the great service. read more
