I'm re-writing this review on my personal account instead of anonymously, because Yelp filtered it out, and I feel like it's important. It's hard for me to write this review because I start to blame myself for not speaking out more in the moment. But then I realize I really did say a lot, and I think it really is hard for women to speak out more in the moment. Because we are socialized not to be difficult, especially to men and especially when we feel vulnerable and are made to feel like we are not the authorities on our own bodies and what we are experiencing. But I don't want to fault myself for not saying more/enduring it/even leaving a 20% tip. But I do really feel compelled to write this review. Because I had an unacceptable experience. Long story short, my back massage hurt so much. I'm trying to go to sleep and I can't, because it hurts so much, 12 hours later. I can't lie down on the back or on my side. My male masseuse asked me what kind of pressure I liked, I said "medium." He said that my back required strong. That 30 minutes was not enough for me, that I needed an hour. I said... okay. I told him at four different points, it's too hard, it hurts. He reluctantly would soften the pressure for about 10 seconds, but then it would just revert back to absolutely murderously painful. And he kept saying my back needed it strong, and that it hurt so much because I wasn't relaxing, and because I hadn't had a massage in a long time. --it's been less than a month since my last massage, and I probably have massages twice/month most months. But that's neither here nor there. Just regular BS of blameing women, and not listening to them when you say it's too much, it's too strong, it hurts, it doesn't feel good. But of course, I'm only processing that parallel hours later. In the moment, when you are vulnerable and naked under a towel with a man, I didn't think like that. I just felt embarrassed that apparently my back was in lousy shape and I was being a wuss, and I just thought, "I can deal with it, it's almost over, let's just make it end." (And in the moments where I couldn't, as I mentioned, I told him it was too strong and it hurt). I can count the number of times on one hand where I have been in so much pain. It was relentless. Everything hurt. Nothing felt good, even for one second. I just wanted it to be over. I've included the pictures of my back. read more

Looks like it's pretty hit or miss with this place. Last time I loved my massage, but today it didn't even come close. I really tried to communicate with the practitioner about the amount of pressure, but it was really hard because they didn't speak English. At one point they had to bring another staff person in the room to translate, which was a little uncomfortable. Such a pity, because I really felt I found my go-to place. Now i'm in so much neck pain, and just general discomfort. :( Giving two stars because the practitioner was really nice and friendly. As an immigrant myself, I really hate giving bad reviews to other immigrants who are clearly working hard. I came in to get a 90 minute hot stone massage for my birthday after reading the positive reviews on yelp. I arrived early and was happy they took me right away. The space was clean, nice, and generally quiet, with nice music playing. The massage was affordable, about 72 dollars for 90 minutes. The bed was comfortable, but they had me laying on paper that felt like the gowns you would wear in a doctor's office. The towel that I had placed on top of me wasn't all that soft. Though it wasn't a hot day, it was pretty hot in the room. The first 10-15 minutes was a massage over the towel, which was a bit long for me. The pressure, despite telling the masseuse at least five times was so firm to the point that I had to clench my teeth from the pain at a few points. I'm now incredibly sore just a few hours later at home. This felt like a deep tissue massage, which I wish they had asked about style or pressure I preferred, as I didn't think this was going to be the case. The hot stones made an appearance for about 3-4 minutes out of the 90 minute massage. It was not a really pleasant experience though the staff was nice and I wanted to like it! I just wish after five times of telling the woman the pressure was too much, she would have adjusted her method. read more

Although I have had some pretty good massages here in the past, I had a terrible experience with my last visit. My masseuse was not trained at all and I was in pain during my entire massage. She kept knocking into my head repeatedly while massaging my shoulders and even scratched my hand when massaging my legs. I left the massage feeling even more tense. The next day, I had intense neck pain and trouble swallowing despite not having neck pain before the massage. She used brute force rather than hitting the right pressure points. She was also either eating candy or chewing gum while giving me the massage because I could hear it the entire duration. The hot towel was scalding hot and it felt like I was getting burned. I'm not sure what her name is, but she was thin and has big curly hair. Keep in mind, I have been to this establishment many times in the past, but I will not be returning. I wanted a nice place to go for a girls day out for a birthday celebration. I found Bergen spa on yelp. Its not far from my job, so l went to pick up a few brochures. I was pleasantly surprised. So surprised, l decided to check them out on the spot.The prices were quite reasonable, clean and the atmosphere was very nice. I had a 30 minute foot rub, which was heavenly. I also had a 30 minute back rub, hmmm it was quite lovely. Nice calming music, nice comfy chairs for the foot massage and the massage were nice. There are quite a few nice restaurants in the area to choose from. After l stuffed my face. It was time to hit the road Jack. I just got a 1 hour, full-body massage with Linda, and it was absolutely amazing. I told her at the start that my lower back and tailbone were in pain and she was extremely considerate of that area while still making sure to work out all my knots and tight areas of my back, shoulders, arms, and legs. At one point Linda even used hot rocks to enhance the massage and it was truly an amazing experience. My back pain has reduced greatly and I can't believe the massage was only $50. I visited the Bergen Spa in December 2017 for a "foot rub and back rub" while visiting a friend who had recently moved into this neighborhood. The store front looked clean and cute and the reviews suggested it would be pretty good. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Let me start by saying, that I have previous experience in managing spas and while I didn't expect the level of quality you would receive from a spa with actual LMT's (licensed massage therapists), I also didn't expect what I received and I feel a moral obligation to share my experience. During the foot rub, my technician was pressing so hard on points in my feet, it was painful and I had to ask him to stop. Unbeknownst to me, my friend's technician had long nails and was scratching his legs and feet throughout the service. On to the "back rub", my guy continued to press ridiculously hard on points in my neck and back- it was painful. My friend's technician was rubbing him with a towel between her hands and his skin and applying compressions (I guess at an attempt to go deep?) At some point during the back rub, my friend said that he wanted to leave (we were in a room together). I couldn't believe what was happening. Afterwards, my friend (who works in a hospital), told me he was concerned that he might be injured. I'm not writing this to criticize the technicians, I honestly think they were trying their best with little or no knowledge of the body. I hold the owner of this business accountable for their lack of any type of employee training. I hope that after reading this review they implement a legitimate training program for their staff so they don't actually hurt someone. read more

The therapists I've had ranged from so-so to absolutely amazing, it depends who you get. Definitely let them know if it's too strong. I especially love the hot stones they use towards the end of a back rub. My massage therapist tonight was amazing and it would've been a great experience overall had it not been for an extremely disrespectful and annoying customer who was getting a foot rub across from me, his phone constantly beeping and making noise, he even picked up a call: on speaker (!) and just continued talking loudly to his friend in the chair next to him even after being asked to keep his voice down by the staff. That said I definitely suggest making an appointment on busy days like weekends. As soon as I was taken in, there were several other walk-ins that they were unable to take. I had a 30-minute chair massage and the massage therapist was great. She really focused on the areas that bothered me. I initially didn't have a preference between the massage chair or the tables in the private rooms. Next time, I will definitely make an appointment in the private rooms. The massage chairs are situated right near the entrance, so there is a lot of talking. While the massage itself was great, the location of the chairs made it a bit harder for me to fully relax. I chose not to get a massage because I wasn't feeling well today and they even offered to let me wait in their massage chairs because they're more comfortable than the waiting chairs. That made a difference for me since I'm here just waiting for my friend. As for the massage, I'm happy to report that he absolutely loved it ! What can I say, $45 (cash price) for a full body, one-hour massage is great. The facility is clean, with no frills, but still has the normal soft spa music. I will say that the massage therapist wasn't particularly skilled, which for $45, I should have expected. Normally when I get a massage at a spa or health center, they ask me about particular areas I want to focus on, or areas of my body that are injured, unfortunately the woman who gave me my massage was polite, but didn't ask any of those questions and didn't really seem focused on any technique, just kind of getting it done. Walking into the place is very welcoming, I had a 12pm appointment, I got there a little early and they set me up right away. My masseuse was amazing personality wise and definitely checking in on if the pressure on my body was too much. I made a mistaken by telling her to give me all she got but whewwww! They accept walk ins but based on how they treat walk ins, it seems that it might be best to make an appointment to maintain the relaxation vibe you'd expect from a "spa." The masseuse massaged most of my knots from my back and she really did her best to do as much as she can to relieve the back pain. It was painful, but after a day of recovering my back feels somewhat relieved. With me being on my feet all day at work, the foot massage helped. First 15 mins is a massage through a towel on your back. Then you get oil, like basted in oil... And near the end there are some hot stones. What the heck style massage is this??
