I've been attempting to give this restaurant a fair chance, however every time I order food,…read morewhether it be breakfast or a small bite, it comes out cooked incorrectly, lacking flavor, and the random bits of food on my plate that I haven't ordered lead me to question the restaurants cleanliness. Recently, I purchased an egg and cheese on sourdough - the sourdough was plain white bread, I asked for my eggs cooked over hard, they were runny, and when I politely asked for them to fix my order, they literally took it back and threw it back on the grill, cross-contaminating it with everything else. Safe to say, I will never come back here, I've had enough unfortunate experiences with Dog Lane. **update. Establishment offered me a refund for my meal. I am still upset with the quality of food and service, however I am thankful for the reparations.

Tried again, good basic diner fare…read more On my re-trek of breakfast spots, decided to give this place another try as it's outside my normal travel zone and the previous experience was lacking. Inside is nice, homey and marches the vibe of a classy New England breakfast dining space. Server was manning the counter and was attentive and helpful. Menu took pride in its Benedict's, and I saw they did a biscuit and gravy. So I opted for their biscuit Benedict to see how that fared. With a side of corned beef hash. Food came out quickly, took pics and dug in. The Benedict was an assembly line Bennie. Biscuits were freshly made in house but salty, eggs perfectly poached and hollandaise was savory. Sausage was a generic sausage patty, and hash browns were delightfully crispy potato pieces. The corned beef hash was cooked well, loaded with lots of meat and very little potato. Which was good, cause the potato was undercooked. I was also overcharged for the corned beef hash, charged the full price when it should've been the add on price. Was 5 bucks additional, but still not cool. As a diner, it checks all the boxes. Good cheap food done well enough. It's nothing to call home about, but a place to go if you're in UConn and have the family visiting.

Honestly the best doughnuts I've had, which made sense after I learned they're all made-to-order…read moreinstead of sitting out! They're light and fluffy with just a little crisp on the outside, and absolutely 0 greasy taste/texture. Their blueberry glaze was especially outstanding, but there wasn't a single one in the six-pack that we didn't love. PLUS 2/3 of the flavors are always changing! And they have daily coffee flavors! The doughnut flavors are really unique too (think chocolate pretzel, maple bacon, etc.). Even better, everything they sell/use is sourced from CT. Slight points off for the atmosphere (it's very cute but could use some sound dampening), but let's be real - it's a place designed to pick up your doughnuts and go, not sit and linger, so I'm not dinging it down from the 5-star review it deserves. We're DEFINITELY coming back!

Good doughnuts, basic toppings, great owner…read more Came here because we knew the owner from a local pizza spot that always looked after us when we would stop by. He decided to branch out and make a tiny donut shop, so we wanted to swing by and give him a try. The shop is small, designed more for your pick up and go crowd. The signage is a little small, so you will need to know where to go to find it. The selection of donuts is akin to specialty cookie shops. They keep a standard selection of doughnuts on demand but also rotate out a few types to keep things fresh. You order your doughnuts with the cashier, and then get to watch your doughnuts get dipped and packed right in front of you. We got a dozen of these little doughnuts. Took our pics then dug in. As a doughnut, they are good. They are a cake doughnut with a little vanilla in the batter to give it a mellow buttery floral flavor note. Not majorly noticeable, but just enough to make it better than just straight up cake. The best bite was the strawberry shortcake. Fresh strawberries with a light whipped cream gives that flavor profile one would expect from a very solid strawberry shortcake. The rest were of varying states of okay for the toppings. The maple bacon was good, the local maple glaze was very maple forward and tasty. The bacon crumbles needed to be cooked more. They were a little too soft and chewy for that style of doughnut. The doughnuts with chocolate syrup needs a better chocolate syrup. Would probably replace with a chocolate drizzle instead. Would hold up better if not eaten immediately. Some of the glazes were not made in house, and were a bit too strong for some of the other toppings on them. They will need to figure out a way to tweak these glazes to not be overpowering. As a destination spot I would expect an elevated product, and this shop is not set up to be elevated just yet. It's set up to be a local morning doughnut place, which is valid but will need to fight to get people to see them. There's some promise to this business idea. They will need to commit to either a boutique tiny doughnut shop or a local pick up and on demand delivery spot. Either one could work, but they need to find their footing first. For those interested in trying this place, it's a good spot for a little sweet treat. Stick to the non-chocolate flavors, get enough to share, and enjoy!

Whale Tea at UConn is a specialty boba tea shop on or near campus that has developed a steady…read morefollowing among both students and people in the surrounding area who make it a regular stop. I found the space clean and the interior with enough character to make it a comfortable place to sit for a bit rather than just a grab and go counter. The brown sugar boba is the signature item. I tried it and the tapioca pearls were chewy in the way that good boba should be, with enough body that they held up through the drink rather than dissolving into something gummy by the midpoint. The brown sugar flavor came through clearly without being cloying. The broader menu covers fruit teas, milk teas, and slushes with a range wide enough that most preferences are accommodated, and customization options for ice level and sweetness allowed me to dial in the drink to my preference. The ability to order without boba if that is not your thing is worth knowing if you are new to the format. Service was friendly and the staff were welcoming in a way that made the shop feel approachable for a first time visitor. Order accuracy has occasionally been an issue, and online orders do not always get flagged as ready in the app when they are, so checking in at the counter if I have been waiting longer than expected is worth doing. Pricing runs over ten dollars per drink, which adds up quickly for a group, and the shop is closed on Wednesdays, a detail worth confirming before making a specific trip. For boba in the Storrs area, Whale Tea sits at the better end of what is available locally.

I got my usual oreo milk tea with 30 percent sugar and jelly boba, and it was the perfect treat, as always. I got the matcha egg puffs, and they looked so cute with their little smiley faces! The flavor and texture of the egg puffs was also delicious and standard, but I was disappointed because I was expecting an oozy matcha filling in the center, and, as you can see in the photo I posted, there is barely any filling at all. The matcha flavor was very weak, and I was basically just eating a plain egg puff. It was still good, but I hope their other flavors have better filling or it was just an off batch.

While we were there, it was obvious that they do a brisk take-out biz. I had a scallion beef which was excellent; my daughter had one of their signature double-cooked pork dishes (which I must have next time), and my wife had a good garlic eggplant dish. So decided to give another go to some places that need another try. The space inside is decorated well, it's very homey and plenty of tables. The server was very nice and had recommendations when asked. I opted for the raspberry beignets and the bananas foster French toast. Food came out quickly, and I took my pics and dug in. The raspberry beignets were pretty much donut holes covered in raspberry and vanilla sauce. The raspberry filling was there, but wasn't very pronounced. For 3 bucks a beignets, it's very expensive. But it was sweet enough and fried fresh. The observant will note that the French toast looks a lot like pancakes. They specify on the menu that you can choose either, but either I was never asked which I wanted or I failed to advocate for my preference. I decided to roll with it, since it could be a mistake from either end. Pancake batter was overworked, bananas were slightly warmed up but done so on the griddle. Picked up the onion funk from their home fries, leading to a rather unpleasant bite. Quality issues can be overlooked if the price is reasonable. For 28 dollars for two dishes, the price is way too high for what I got. As a local breakfast spot, there's not many around that area. If you need breakfast and are unwilling to drive another 5-10 minutes for other options, the food is okay and portions are reasonable. It's pricy, stick to the savory, and don't expect more than the basics.
