Covid-19 Take Out Update: ordered a family meal ($35) from their website along with a pound of fried chicken. The family meal came with a two boxes of entrees and a veggie. They didn't pack it until I arrived at the restaurant, so everything was hot and fresh. The stewed chicken with shiitake and button mushrooms was super tasty with a rich sauce. Salty and packed with an umami punch. Mushrooms were thick and "meaty". Really excellent with rice. The flavors were classic oyster sauce and soy. The chicken was super tender and the marinade penetrated to the center of the nuggets. Mmmmmmm! The fried egg and shrimp was amazing! It had nice "wok flavor" and the egg was very silky. Our little one couldn't stop eating it. Shrimp was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Lots of flavor in a simple dish. Yeah! I had a choice of veggie and I picked bok choy. It was also super good. Nicely seasoned with a touch of ginger and a pinch of salt. So good even our veggie hating lil guy ate some. The amount was quite generous. We didn't get any rice because we made it at home, but that's an option. We added on a pound of fried chicken. Now, this is really interesting. It's super good, but not exactly what I imagined in my mind. They use white meat cutlets that are pounded into thin planks. The coating is reminiscent of Chinese salt-pepper mix (like the stuff for salt-pepper fried shrimp or pork chops), but not as intensely salty. I suspect it's because they don't use MSG. Also, it's a gentle breading, kinda like at some Japanese places. It's not intensely crunchy like popcorn chicken. It's also not spicy! It's a good deal at $13/pound. Reheat in a convection toaster oven for best results! The store was not crowded, but there was a steady flow of masked patrons. Employees are friendly and very efficient. On BentoLicious owners' blog (jessicacooking), you can see she quotes Kung Fu Panda that the secret ingredient is nothing - more specifically, it is her mother's love and great cooking. The blog also mentions that it is important to "put your heart in it." I am wondering if they just forgot, and maybe forgot to emphasize to the staff. Today I come again, first I ask if I can skip the rice and just get veggie, the Cantonese lady wearing a banana says no. (That's ok, I suspected you couldn't skip the rice anyway). You pay for a lot of rice, but that's fine. : Now I go on to make my veggie bento. After the rice put in, I ask for the cabbage. : I noticed there were a few gaps (on the right and left corner of large tray after the cabbage is put in).. and since I'm hungry.. so I asked if I could have a little bit more cabbage. I literally asked for a little bit more. (Not like a lot more, just a tiny request.. mabye even like 1 spoon to see they at least care). But... The cantonese lady says that will be a different price. So maybe that is the rule, but it really doesn't look good. Makes your store look really cheap. I also put in my tip each time. When the owner shoves the receipt down for me to sign. Surely one time it should have paid for the extra pieces of cabbage. Anyway. I hope this happens more often so that customer service will be improved. This small restaurant is located on the far end of the parking lot where a few large chain restaurants and a chain hotel take up the main view from the road. The employees are welcoming the moment a customer walks in and immediately ask the number of bento boxes to order. The day that I came in, they had Fried Rice : ) on top of which they scooped Mongolian Beef (NOT spicy, the employee warned me : ) For my three sides, I selected Salt and Pepper Tempura Pumpkin, Szechuan Eggplant with Tofu, and Mapo Tofu. A second bento included the Fried Rice and Basil Chicken generously scooped on top with the same three sides as above. ALL of the food was fresh, full of flavor, and an enjoyable lunch on the go. Just go. Lovely taiwanese style bento boxes with delicious food. They really remind me of the quicky, easy bentos from Taiwan. The sides really make the meal - the pumpkin, tofu, and EGGPLANT! But everything is super tasty and great pricing. There's plenty of tables outside and inside. They also offer dinner take home meals, the link pops up on the website the day before - so it makes it easy to pick up a meal for dinner. The service is also wonderful, the owner is super sweet and you can tell all the employees are super helpful and keep the place very clean. Came here with a coworker for lunch and the place was a lot smaller than we thought. It was also really packed inside, felt like the people on the tables didn't have room since the people waiting in line were in their space. It took us about 10 minutes to get our foods. There wasn't a huge variety of foods you can pick from. I got the black pepper beef as my entree with a veggies, ma po tofu, and this egg. There wasn't labels on the side dishes so I wouldn't be able to tell you what I got. I tried asking the servers what it was and they couldn't understand English. My bentobox was about $12, which I thought was a little expensive but Panda Express is sometimes even more expensive and you get less options. It operates kinda like Panda Express where you point at the items you want and watch them scoop in the food for you :) except Bentolicious feels more homey and is on the healthier side. The default base is rice (I don't think there are other options). You first pick a main entree/protein (my fav is the pork chop) and then 3 side dishes. They have a couple veggie options (deep fried/stir fry), mapo tofu, and tea egg. I usually opt for their egg plant, some greens, and tea egg :) They give a good amount of food (I was able to make 2 meals out of it). A bento box is around $12-14 after tax/before tips depending on what protein you choose. Fairly quick service, cashier man is nice and helpful. Overall, I'd definitely recommend! When you enter you are greeted by the workers and they ask you "how many boxes" and were shocked when I said one... after eating one... I understand why people order multiple! The food is cooked fresh and then put out on warmers to be freshly served/ added to your box. They are generous with the portions, especially the rice. Quality wise- not oily or too salty. Normally I don't favor mapo tofu, but there's was pretty tasty and the flavors weren't too overpowering. Veggies were cooked well and seasoned so it was nice to eat on its own. ATMOSPHERE: They do a good job at managing customers coming in and out and have a pretty good barrier between the food and the customers (use chairs and plastic wrap---hey, gotta do what you gotta do). So yes, covid distancing and mask protocols are followed here. They also have some concrete fixtures where you can dine outside as well as a large tree w/ concrete around it to sit and enjoy your food. FOOD: 4.5 / 5 Like others have said, they have a small menu but then again, the food here is well and freshly cooked. It's like going to Panda Express where you order your main entree, rice, and then they ask you what sides. Oh and to mention before I go further: Yes I get it, its not like eating in the motherland and as a non-Taiwanese, I've been there now 6 times in the last 10 years, so I know what homestyle and street Taiwanese food tastes like. But there's nothing unauthentic about this place and wife agrees. We have our preferences. Wife likes their fried pork chops and one beef dish, whose name I can't recall and they usually run out by the time we get there. My fave is their organic chicken mainly because its good (haha) but also I'm eating a lot cleaner now these days. All the side dishes are good to great. My recommendation is that you get the eggplant. I wish I could get a double service, it's really that good. Oh their tea egg is pretty good too. Another thing I wish I could have a double serving of! I drove here on a weekday around noon, and the restaurant was busy--not packed, but fairly busy. There was no line, so I took a look at the menu options and ordered right away. The staff were all really friendly and helped me make my decision--I ordered the Chiayi Chicken bento with Taiwenese cabbage, bamboo and shredded potato. It was all delicious and I scarfed it down fairly quickly. The bamboo in particular paired nicely with the chicken. The lady behind the counter (the owner, I think?) said she makes the bamboo less often than the other side dishes, so be sure to try it if it's available! I am thoroughly impressed with this place. I didn't feel like having panda express or Greek or my usual lean cuisine. I searched on Yelp to see what was available and this place was one of the recommendation. I had the railroad bento lunch with sides. Earlier before I came here, I called to see what was available as the sides because it did not show on their website or anywhere else. I called and the gentleman on the phone said I need to come in because I am new. I didn't know what it meant until I arrived. I am definitely impressed with how they care about the customers during the pandemic. They keep their customers in line... Literally... From each other and keep a distance where the hot plate and where the customers are standing. It appears that the sides change each day. One or two items are different each day I'm guessing. I guess I will have to return next time to try the other dishes. The price is decent, the quality is definitely A+. Highly recommended: get the Thai iced tea before it sells out. I got there around 12:20pm and three customer ahead of me bought the last the last drop of the Thai iced tea. If you are too late for the Thai iced tea, try the sarsaparilla soda. It's not a typical sarsaparilla I'm used to but it does change things up with your lunch in a good way. We come here quite often, food was tasty and options have enough variety to make everyone in the family happy. but the recent 2 times had raise concern for me on the food quality: my entire family had gone through acute stomach pain and other food poisoning symptoms right after eating their food. If it's just one time, I could say maybe it's other stuff we had through out the day, but 2 times in a row is almost certainly something wrong with this place. Organic chicken used for their ChiaYi chicken dish, has skin attached. Place is not big, i counted about 14 seats total but clean. The ladies that serve you all wear mouth guards, very hygienic and all nice & friendly. Some favorite sides: eggplant, SiGua w/dried shrimp, Mapo tofu, string bean & beancurd, salt pepper pumpkin... As a fellow Taiwanese, I have certain expectations when it comes to Taiwanese food. I was skeptical about this place at first with their stellar reviews. Then I tried it once and it was pretty darn good. I'm tasting it again for the second time, and I still like it! There aren't really any Taiwanese restaurants that I'd go out and eat in tri-valley prior to this place. I've only ordered their #1 Ichiban fried chicken breast bento twice because that's what I like and craved. If I had to be nit picky, the chicken breast could be a bit thicker and more "pepper-salt" added. I wanted it to be like a popcorn chicken place where I could freely add as much of that "pepper-salt" as I want. Blame my wife. She eats like that and I'm just following her. =P Another thing that I didn't like was that although you get 3 side dishes for your bento, but because the meal is served on a plastic tray, it has 3 different slot sizes for the sides. The first time I was here, they didn't ask me but placed the first side dish into the biggest space and then second side to the 2nd biggest. Tried out BentoLicious recently after hearing about it. I was excited for a Taiwanese place in the area. It can be a bit tough to find, so look for The Organic Coup and this restaurant will be just across from it. I went with the railroad bento because I love Taiwanese style fried pork chop. It came with the tea leaf egg and a slice of beancurd, mixed vegetables, and for the last side, I chose the eggplant. Unfortunately, the pork chop did not meet my expectations. It lacked flavor and did not taste like what you'd expect at other Taiwanese places in the south bay. The eggplant dish was decent and so was the egg. It would have been nice to choose a different side other than the mixed vegetables though, or to swap the space on the tray. My friends like the basil chicken so perhaps I'll try that next time. read more
