Clean, manned well, well maintained, nicely set up and reasonably priced. The layout is excellent whether shooting handguns or rifles. The staff inside upon arrival are welcoming and pleasant to deal with. I do, however, agree with the comments about the range masters. I believe them to be knowledgeable and focused on safety, but they do not have any formal CX training. This was my first visit and I plan on returning to use this facility again. read more

I've been flipping a coin in my head for the last week whether to write this review and finally made a decision. I served 20 years in the US Army and was "boots on the ground" in two wars. During those 20 years I spent six of them on "jump status" that is I was a paratrooper. Military static line parachuting can be very hard on the body. In service to my country I broke my back once, my left leg once (in three places), and injured my left knee in jump school, which, as I got older forced me to wear a brace in order to walk without pain. Additionally I, and my fellow troops, had to carry rucksacks which weighed up to 100 pounds on missions. Like many veterans I have my good days and I have my bad days. Due to my injuries my doctor has authorized me to obtain a handicap parking hanger from the Arizona Department of Transportation. And now we come to the afternoon of last Friday, 25 September, 2026. I wanted to target shoot at Ben Avery however my back was acting up again so prior to departing for the range I literally got an adjustment from my chiropractor. I arrived at the Ben Avery public range, parked in a handicap space, put my hanger from the rear view mirror, and walked to the entrance. I immediately noticed there were only two empty benches which were close by: bench number 30 and 31 that are designated as "handicapped" benches. The next closest empty bench was at least 12 benches down the line and frankly hauling gear back and forth that far would place a strain on my back (gone are the days when I could carry a ton of junk without consequence-now I have to make multiple trips carrying a lighter load). Now, for a guy like me, whose done the things that I've done and seen the things I've seen, reaching a point on the trail where I am "handicapped" is a bitter pill to swallow. But thats life and it is what it is. Trying to make the best of the situation I pointed at one of the empty handicapped benches and asked the head rangemaster, "Could I have a cripple bench?". He looked at me and said, "No-you're not handicapped." I then turned around and pointed at my vehicle, parked in the handicap space, and said, "Yes-I am!" Again, he told me that I was not handicapped, and those spaces were only for people in wheelchairs. I was at a loss for words. I mean, there was no way I was going to reel out my entire medical history in front of him and four strangers explaining my medical issues. Moreover, by him telling me, I wasn't handicapped he was de facto stating publicly IN FRONT OF OTHERS that I was lying about obtaining a handicap tag and was a fraud. Fortunately, for me, one of the junior range safety officers said "Look, go ahead, take that table" overriding the head Range Master's decision-which I did. I spent the next 90 minutes at the range 30 feet from the head range master wondering if he would come to his senses and apologize to me for what he said. But that wasn't the case. In fact, when I was exiting the range the subject came up again. This was his second chance to apologize to me for what he said in public. However, instead of an apology he doubled down on his previous comment-AGAIN IN FRONT OF MORE STRANGERS. Once more, he told me that I wasn't really handicapped and I did not deserve to shoot at that table. He was slandering my integrity and my honesty by stating this publicly. At this juncture I'd had it. I had been sitting on the fence whether to elevate this issue higher and told him, "You just made my decision for me." What was his response? "That's fine". I went into the Ben Avery range office and I demanded to speak to his supervisor. I had my handicap parking tag with me. I told him what happened and how upset I was. This gentleman understood my concerns, told me the head Range Master was completely wrong, he should've never said what he did, and that by law they have to give those handicap benches to anybody who asks for them. I have been going to Ben Avery Shooting Range beginning in 1972 when it was called "Black Canyon Shooting Range" so I kind of know my way around there. My concerns, (other than being publicly, humiliated and de facto labeled a fraud in public), is that this Range Master will continue to do this to other people, has previously done it to God knows how many other people before me, and just doesn't grasp what he's done. Now I'm not going to dox this guy in public as that's just not how I operate but his first name begins with the letter "R". So, if you go to Ben Avery make sure to bring you guns, ammo, hearing protection and above all else your medical records. You certainly want to be ready if your physical abilities are challenged, doubts are aired about your integrity, and you are told by Rangemaster "R" (who I guess is a medical psychic) and judges that, "YOU AREN'T HANDICAPPED". read more

I had a really great experience at this shooting range this weekend! I believe reservations are required, at least a day in advance. We came here for some afternoon target practice and it was a gorgeous day. Plenty of parking, clean restrooms, a water refill station and fountain. There was a store on site and a chilli dog truck nearby too. After checking in, we went to our assigned lane which was clean! Apparently this range also offers archery and clay targets, so lots of options! They have multiple gun ranges too! Looking forward to coming back here. read more

The worst run range in AZ. I highly recommend you go somewhere else. They run events and charge you but don't have anyone directing traffic. So about 100 fellow shooters got stuck for more than 1 hour trying to get out of a parking lot because the range was either too dumb or too cheap to hire someone for $20 an hour to direct traffic with some flags. Horrible management! I'll drive out to Usery from now on. This is the second time in a month. I'm an avid shooter and, I will never go to this range again. read more

This review is not for the actual shooting facilities. The review is for the grounds themselves. We attended the annual Arizona Fish and Game Outdoor Expo. Ben Avery is the perfect venue for the event. Facilities are already in place for the shooting demonstrations, and trials. There is plenty of room for all of the vendors, as well as all of the information booths. Booths may be spread out a bit, so people have room to explore and enjoy. Various food trucks were there for the event. Ample parking was available. Parking was in dirt lots. Trailers shuttled guests to and from the parking lot. For how hot and sunny it was, it would have been nice if there were some spots set up with shade tents and/or places to sit. read more

This is the first outdoor range I've been to and also only the second time I've been shooting, but I loved it! It felt intimidating going in but I got over it and I was simply just nervous. I like the range rules, shooting every 15 mins with breaks to change out targets, etc. The range workers are nice and very helpful. They could probably tell I am a novice but they corrected my mistakes graciously and I was very thankful for their kind attitude. They have a small shop on site to buy targets and maybe some merch, but not much else. I wish they sold ammo too! My husband and I will definitely come back and make this a regular outing of ours. read more

The Ben Avery guy lectured me 5 times and told me to leave if. 6th time says; I'm not picking on you. So; I found a free BLM range. A few miles away. 1- stand at the firing line not behind. 2- hold pistol so it won't hurt ur thumb 3- If you keeping shooting after loudspeaker, ur out. I never heard it. 4- took ear plugs out. Could hear speaker, but couldn't tell what they say. Told him. He said pay attention to beep then. 5- u must shoot at a target not the burm. Go watch a 4 min video and purchase a target. I said no thanks. I'm done. 6- comes and says I'm not picking on you. I said; that never crossed my mind until just now. 7- guy next to me said drive down a few miles to free blm ranges. The range officers have an important job To do, I respect that , and respectfully listened to him. But customers are not mind readers. BLM had rules posted on a pole. Ben Avery could do similar. Instead Their loud speakers are hideous. Can't hear it. Loud guns going off. All the time. Speaker is from 1920s era. 2 officers standing behind me and ignoring 50 other customers. Been shooting here since the 90s. At the time it was the largest range in the world! They have this place really nicely set up for covid. Buy your range time online. The range opens for check in 15 minutes before. Find your name on the pre printed clipboard and you're at the lane number you see next to your name The place is HUGE but not as complicated as it appears at first. The clay target shotgun area is my favorite by far. Go online to learn the difference between skeet, 5 stand sporting clyas etc before you go and try them all! Lastly there's a 1000 yard range too. This place has shooting setups for all skills and disciplines. Just took my 500 magnum out for a spin. 8in barrel 44 magnum in picture for comparison. Ammo comparison too. So ...go to Ben Avery and (literally) have a BLAST! read more

Attn: Management, Visitors, I have been visiting this Range for over 10 years and have noticed a marked improvement in Staff Customer Service, prompting me to write this review. Range Officers such as Jeremy, Russel, Dale, Chris and others have been extremely helpful and efficient in caring for visiting shooters. There is a definite skillful aspect to the ability to manage a large number of sometimes beginner level personnel, and these Officers mentioned have all exceeded that, in my opinion. I have recently been "Checked-In" by Management @ Tower (Bob) who has always accommodated my needs for table placement. I visit this particular Range every Sunday along with their other facilities (Clays, Steel) and appreciate all the employees that are there and how I have been treated lately. Great place to do some outdoor shooting. Prices are very reasonable and they have plenty of staff to assist and make sure everyone is safe. They allow shooting for 15 minute at a time and then a break to change out targets. They also check everybody's firearm during this break which was strange but I'm sure it is for safety reasons. We were allowed to shoot all our firearms including the shotguns...although they required different (metal) frame targets for it. Overall, fun place to be outside and shooting. I had been warned that this was a very unpleasant location to shoot at before I had ever visited. Upon arrival I learned everything I have ever been told was true. The range instructors gave an unpleasant experience by basically mobbing me with 4 range instructors immediately while I was unzipping my firearms. They complained about me having too many firearms at the shooting table. They complained if I loaded guns at the shooting table, they complained if I had a shoulder holster. They complained if I wore my holster on my front left and cross drew. They complained if my revolver was even slightly tilted forward while loading shells. And all 4 of them complained over each other at the exact same time. They personally inspected my firearms then began investigating and questioning me wether my firearms were legal or not. Binary triggers are perfectly legal. I was told rapid fire was allowed before my arrival over the phone. But when I rapid fired while shooting the range instructors became very upset. Also the entire time staff was stuck on me 4 deep they were ignoring every other novice shooter including the young mixed race couple next to me shooting their first firearm. I feel like the ultra obsession that they fixated on me lead to a lack of supervision for the less experienced shooters in my area. I was told the uncomfortable amount of supervision that was fixated on me was for safety by a guy shooting next to me. I responded then why aren't 4 of them standing over literally anyone else first off and second how come c2 tactical can operate their ranges with none of the same rules and only 1 instructor with no safety violations or accidents and have a much better experience. the only response the guy next to me had was "GOOD POINT". read more
