The flavor choices of ice cream are pretty cool and unique, as I've never seen another place with Animal Cookie flavored ice cream. But I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have lychee flavored shaved ice syrup. The workers are super friendly and the shop is decorated really cute, with beachy decorations and a "space-y" feel - hence, the "Below Zero" name. This place has been such a gem ever since I found it! My daughter and I go at least once a week usually on the weekends cuz we crave it constantly! Their shaved ice with vanilla ice cream combination is genius. I tried it one time in Arizona and had been looking for a place here in Cali and luckily found this one and it did not disappoint. Also the staff is super nice and professional! I see a woman there every time I go, & if I had to guess I would say she's either a manager or the owner and she is such a sweetheart along with all the other employees. I would've posted a pic but i wasn't able to go today because they closed early for Labor Day but i was pushed to make this review because of the polite and friendly demeanor the woman had who answered the phone (sounded like the lady I said earlier who I think is the owner) and was willing to stay open if I was close by but I live a little far. 10/10 recommends you all to try this place, highly doubt you'll be disappointed. Even the shaved ice is more fluffy and not rough like most raspado/shaved ice places are. I'll also add that the first time I went there, there was a weird taste like if I they used sink water to make the shaved ice, so I made the suggestion that maybe their water filter needed to be changed or something needed to be cleaned and I assume they took it into consideration and I gave them another chance and it's tasted great ever since! read more

They have bad customer service. The staff seems stressed, they do not smile, and are not friendly. The ice is good but bad customer sercice takes away the experience. Today is my second time here because it's hot and I brought my husband who agreed on the girls having attitude. My advise is know what to order before you come or else they will give you a hard time, the menu is a little confusing. There was a male there my 1st time who was very kind, courteous, and had a great overall attitude, I only returned because he made my experience a great one. Easy on the syrup please! I've been here a couple times thinking that my experience would be better somehow. I haven't seen other Shaved Ice locations/trucks work over a wire rack in case of spillage. They drench your ice with syrup! Once you get to the bottom of your styrofoam bowl/cup, the syrup is just sitting there in a large sugary puddle. It feels like I ate a squeeze pop from the ice cream man when i was younger and ran through a playground, & get that heavy feeling in your throat. Once I told the lady as she was drenching my ice with Watermelon and Melon syrup .. "just easy on the syrup please" and she just looked at me like i was crazy. my cup was still sticky and the downside is that my melon tasted like toothpaste. I avoided to eat that side and threw it out. The only PRO is that I like their concept about ice cream on the bottom and placed on top. read more

I've been to this little shop three times in the past two weeks, hopefully that speaks for how delicious it is! I usually order the Large Combo, which comes with three shaved iced flavors, if you so desire, and any flavor of ice cream. They have thrifty ice cream here, which includes the classic colorful cotton candy flavor! I recommend a large combo with half tiger's blood, half cotton candy ice, with vanilla ice cream. The creaminess of the ice cream and vibrant flavor of the shaved ice blend together very nicely. And they're never open on time! I went with my 6 year brother around 1:00pm and they weren't open yet (they're supposed to open at 12:00!!). My family and I stopped here yesterday since it was hot and we wanted a cold treat to cool off and we were pleasantly surprised. I am a very picky shaved ice eater since I grew up eating the best shaved ice in Hawaii (my uncle owns TATs shaved ice truck and it is amazing)...so I didn't expect much from this place, but it was worth the stop and we will be back again (and again and again if my husband has his way). The portions are big and the prices are even better. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because I am used to strong flavored syrups and although their syrups were tasty they didn't pack the punch that I am used to and enjoy. My husband also could not taste the vanilla flavor on his (he got banana and vanilla) but there was a ton of ice cream and li hing mui powder which he really liked. My son even enjoyed it. We were so happy when they finally opened up for business! I am hooked on their Chai latte with condense milk (sometime caramel). My son loves Candyland, but would like to give others a try. In some reviews people said this place was almost like Hawaii's. I have yet to find a place like Hawaii's. They have the "snow cap" (condensed milk) & w/ iced cream so I thought it was going to be legit. Nope! And them smashing a cover on top defeats the whole purpose of the lightness of the shave ice. And they put waaaaay too much syrup. On another note, my niece was with me. She just had ice cream on a cone. It was too much for her to hold so we asked for a cup. And they said they couldn't give me one. I said I'll buy an empty cup but they still said no it's either a cup or cone. Not both because they have a cup count. Um ok? I'm updating my review to a 3 for a couple of reasons. Bad - the hours. 12-6 doesn't really cover my usual times of wanting shaved ice. Bad - the seating. Little of it, but more importantly it's kind of uncomfortable and the very loud TV is really distracting. OK - The quality is all right but I've had a bad run lately. Last few ices were underwhelming. It might have something to do with my getting sugar-free syrup. The ice has been dense and soaked with syrup which (again, maybe because it was sugar-free) had an awful texture. Good - The price is low, and it still tastes pretty good on the whole. Up until now, the shaved ice I would get was from the Get Shaved truck and their store. Now that Below Zero is close I can get there and have my fix. I agree the ice isn't as fine a get shaved, but they have the same amount of flavors and the condensed milk (always a plus). Seating is scarce, and at times they need to clean up after sloppy customers (hey, people if you make a mess, be helpful and clean it up). I've been craving Hawaiian shaved ice since my trip to Maui last year. I tasked my brother-in-law to find a place close to me that served it and he did well! He found Below Zero. We went at night and it was quite hard to find since they don't have a lit up sign. They have a list of combos of ice cream and syrup flavors or you can create your own by choosing among various ice cream and syrup flavors. I chose to go with the pineapple coconut ice cream with mango and coconut syrup. It definitely hit the spot. It isn't exactly like the real Hawaiian shaved ice, but it definitely will do. read more
