I reserved a tea tasting on their website and Adam responded immediately to confirm the appointment. Adam confirmed that he had just started the tea tasting series for the room in the back and it was super informative. We tried a great variety of greens, blacks, oolongs, etc. We were very hydrated by the end and there were some tasty rice crackers and dried fruit as well. It was very intimate and cozy to see, smell and drink about tea. Adam provided a lot of cool photos of where the tea came from and their suppliers. As a tea enthusiast, I learned a lot of information that isn't online like how tea masters can feel the weather through tea leaves. Super impressive. I really enjoyed my experience and so did my friends who were not tea people. Definitely worth the journey to Brooklyn alone and better than my experience at Tea Dealers. I used to visit their Greenpoint shop years ago and appreciated their selection especially the oolongs and Wuyi teas. I recently ordered four different teas online and was completely disappointed. Somewhere along the way they seem to have shifted from being a boutique tea company to focusing on branding and packaging. The teas themselves are uninspired and overpriced. What really sealed it for me was one of their blends with Lapsang Souchong was undrinkable. The blend was so poorly conceived that I was shocked they'd even sell it. I wrote to them about it. Reply: nothing. Silence. That was the most disappointing part. This isn't the same small company I used to enjoy. read more

Gorgeously designed and well worth the stop, Bellocq offers a large variety of teas to tingle your taste buds. I discovered Bellocq after having afternoon tea with some girlfriends at Little Hen and I can definitely say Bellocq's teas are worth the taste at high tea! Don't be fooled--Completely disheartening, just received the no. 129 peony peach botanical ice tea. So sad to understand that it's just a well wrought, however common, marketing ploy. Ingredients just: white tea & French lavenders . I already have white tea in my larder !! UUGHH SO disappointed in Bellocq. I "was" a loyal patron for their Matcha and tea ware. I've been trying to check out Bellocq for a few years. Unfortunately, they've always been closed when I've walked by; however, they were finally open as I passed by today. The business is very similar to Harney and Sons. They have a wide variety of loose leaf teas sure to suit any beginner or intermediate tea enthusiast. They have some proprietary blends as well as some nice tea ware. Lots of great gift options here. They also have a small tea room in the back. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Online ordering is a mess! They didn't have half of my order available. Refused to honor the first time customer discount code advertised. Made it my problem to sample their products! A smart store would have sent loose leaf packs of 3 ounces to replace the money refunded. Bellocq instead offered a sachet. What a beautiful store upon entry, followed by slight disappointment when I asked if the space in the back was for sipping tea; it is not. A true shame. Even still, I browsed around and laid my eyes on almost every item that had on shelving and tables. If you're a true tea connoisseur, you'll love this place. Shocking I know but coffee came into our lives only a few years ago and until that point we were strictly a tea family. Hot or cold, and heck sometimes, in between we drink a fair amount of tea in our family. We run the gamut with what we drink. From Celestia Seasonings, to the higher end stuff like Mariage Frères. Bellocq Tea Atelier is in the high end category. We have yet to run into a tea we did not like. The blends are perfect, fun, and come in a tin that is both unique and so heavy duty, it might survive an atomic blast. Our sister who lives in NYC introduced us to this brand years ago and it is easily our preferred tea of choice. Our favorites so far: No. 22, National Parks Dept: This one looks odd the first time you open the tin. Juniper berries, pieces of cedar tips, among other tings grabs the eye immediately. The smokey quality is light and the cedar and juniper notes are pervasive but not overwhelming. You are almost transported to a campground just below El Capitan... No. 54, Gypsy Caravan: Another great one. Hints of smokiness and has a light floral note. This one is a bold in your face cup. I'm not fan of rose anything in my food, but the dried rose petals add just a hint of smell and do not distract from the cup as a whole. No. 35, The Earl Grey: So I'm a a total fiend for Earl Grey. The citrus notes balancing off the harshness of traditional black tea is always a winner in my book. Such is the case with this blend. However, unlike many Earl Grey offerings, the Ceylon base of this one is fantastic. The base has a soft palate quality to it. A deft touch is used to add the bergamont which is in perfect balance to the tea base. To be honest there are dried blue cone flowers, but aside from a nice visual I can't really taste what the bring to the cup. I have never been to the store, but they do have a nice web presence so that anybody can enjoy these teas. read more

We found this hidden gem when we were walking around Greenpoint and we were so glad that we did because this is now one of our favorite places to get tea in the city. It's definitely up there with Kettl, another tea place in Brooklyn although Bellocq has a wider variety in terms of where the teas come from because Kettl focuses on Japanese tea. The shop is a bit hard to find, but they usually have a sign outside of their door when they are open. The shop is gorgeous with pastel pink colored couches and is the perfect place to stop by on a cold day. They usually have two types of tea that you can taste as well as a few selections of jam. Their teas are also packaged really nicely so they are great for gifts and they sell ceramics as well. The people who work here are also really friendly and knowledgeable. They will do everything they can to help you look for something that's right for you. They also have a free tea tasting based on different themes and regions for a few hours on weekends (the times and days change depending on the season so make sure you call ahead of time before making your way to the shop if this is something that interests you). They had three samples of Himalayan tea the first time we went, which was interesting since I had never had Nepalese tea before. Always loved the gorgeous canister... however the price was high and I wasn't sure when I would be able to actually go to visit or order on-line. Skip ahead a few years and they had free shipping on orders over like $50.00 I proceeded to order the following: No. 47, The Queen's Guard - Yellow Traveler Caddy (4.75"), 2.5oz/71g No. 01, Bellocq Breakfast - Bellocq Box, 3oz/86g No. 35, The Earl Grey - Bellocq Box, 3oz/86g this morning I enjoyed a cup of Earl Grey it was strong and scented my home nicely LOL. The packaging was meticulous, from the bright yellow textured cardboard boxes the teas come in to the parchment paper they are wrapped in and sealed with the initial 'B' this says classy. I ordered on Tuesday of this week and it arrived yesterday... not bad from New York to California. I'm from LA and was visiting NYC for vacation. I wanted to grab my mother something from New York but not too touristy. She loved tea and so I made my way across to Brooklyn to this small shop hidden away. I was not disappointed. I was greeted with a warm welcome from one of the workers and was given a mini explanation of the store. There were so many different kinds to choose from and I felt a bit overwhelmed but thankfully the store worker explained everything. It was easy to make a choice after that. My mom loves the tea. I wish she could've been there to see the store. The environment is cozy and it feels like what you would think a natural herb tea store should feel like. I would definitely recommend going here if you love tea or want to pick up tea for someone else? read more

I blog about tea, so in "the circle" I kept hearing about Bellocq Tea Atelier so I decided to meet with a friend there and check it out for myself. It's the second time I ended up in this part of Brooklyn. I guess I love my neighborhood too much to venture out of the "hood". I really enjoyed going there, though. The place is small and you have to ring on the doorbell to get in. There is a rope by the door (I thought that was the thing to pull in order to ring the bell haha). Anyway, the place is lovely. The selection is really nice, and all the teas presented are of great quality. I also noticed that they sell silver strainers, which is something I would love to get next time. My friend knows I love tea (and even blog about it) and decided to get me some Dragonwell. I had some today and it's definitely a great tea I love to drink in my little Gongfu set. Highly recommend for all tea lovers or anyone interested in experiencing tea as it should be. Removed one star for that doorbell thing. Quite unwelcoming. Also, the person at the counter was a bit cold. Maybe she had a bad day but really when it comes to this kind of high-quality tea, the best is to have someone who shares/shows some passion. For anyone who is a fan of premium teas, Bellocq tea is at the top-tier of herbal artistry. So although it takes a significant amount of time to get here from the city, and considering there is nothing else to do once you finally do arrive, I am still willing to give them five stars. This is because going to Bellocq is comparable to finding your way to Narnia. Near the inconspicuous, black door you'll find a doorbell. Behind it, a lush wonderland awaits! With green plants hung along the ceiling, a full wall of large Bellocq tea cases, a layout of tea samples to smell, and a back room with vintage couches and plants, there is no place I would rather get my tea. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful which is entirely conducive to tea shopping. I eagerly await the tea room that will be opening soon! It will give me another reason to haul myself over to the rapidly expanding Greenpoint area. read more

OMGosh am I happy to have discovered this adorably cute and awesome tea shop. First off the inside is absolutely beautiful and makes you want to just stay there and relax. Second off the lady working there when I picked up tea was super friendly and awesome and cool and I want us to be friends. Third I love hibiscus tea and green tea (they have many types) and my boyfriend loves earl grey. Needless to say, I walked out with $70 worth of tea. I'll be back! read more

I ordered online from Bellocq in December of 2019. My partner loves tea and had been wanting some tea bowls and a gai wan so I ordered them from Bellocq a week or so before Christmas and opted for $18 express shipping so that my gift would arrive on time to be given for the holiday. I did receive a package from Bellocq on December 23rd but when I opened it, I realized they had sent me a bunch of small bags of tea instead of what I actually ordered. I wrote them immediately about the mistake expecting to hear back shortly after the holiday at the latest but knowing I'd have to give the tea to my partner with my apologies. He hates herbal tea, and many of the varieties that were sent were herbal. I didn't hear back from anyone at Bellocq by January 2nd so I followed up. On January 3rd I finally got a response. They refunded the express shipping I had paid for and sent me a return label for the tea they mistakenly sent me, explaining that I could get my original order when they received my return. I responded and let them know that the box I had received the tea in was lost in the holiday shuffle (and because they took over a week to get back to me, I had sort of lost hope). I asked if they could just send me what I had actually ordered and we'd call it even. I followed up today, January 15th, because I still haven't heard back. The customer service is just terrible - maybe they're fine in person but definitely do NOT order from Bellocq online. read more

Bellocq is a lovely, gorgeous atelier for all things tea. The atmosphere is serene and the packaging is exquisitely beautiful. We initially came in to buy a Signature Blends box for the holidays, but unfortunately they were sold out at the shop. The salesperson offered to ship the box to our destination so it would be ready in time for Christmas. All in all, great customer service and the staff is clearly very knowledgeable about the teas. The best part is the samples they have steeping at the counter for tasting -- I never knew that oolong tea could be so light on the tongue! read more

I absolutely adore this place. It's a beautiful respite from this industrial part of Greenpoint. It's a little hard to find, but there is a little sign on the door and a big bell hanging by it. Once you step inside, I know this sounds cheesy, but it really is like you're transported to another world. It's so entirely peaceful and calm in there. The music, the smell of the tea, the quiet, and the muted sunlight (the windows are covered so that light still comes through but it's less harsh) all combine to make this the perfect little shop. The interior is gorgeous. The teas are all displayed so that you can see and smell each kind, and there are curtains leading into a cute little seating area with light pink chairs and couches, tables, and plants. There is wood everywhere, and the dark purple of the walls, the bright yellow tea canisters behind the counter, and the old measuring set all added to the perfect atmosphere. It was so peaceful I almost wanted to stay and take a nap! I spent quite a while smelling the different teas and reading about them on the pamphlet that is provided. The girl who was working was super sweet and knowledgeable. She didn't rush me or push me into trying anything or buying anything. I asked her a couple of questions and she gave me great suggestions on which teas to get for what purposes and how to brew them at home. I ended up buying a chai and a lemongrass one, and she even asked me if I wanted any samples to take home, which I did! Once I chose my teas, they were measured carefully into gorgeous packaging, and she handwrote (in beautiful handwriting!) on each one the name of the tea and how many ounces were in the package. This is QUINTESSENTIAL Williamsburg. You're walking down a street with graffiti on industrial metal doors, scaffolding on shmancy-apartments-to-be, and trash in the gutter, and you pull open a door on an unmarked building. All of a sudden, like Alice falling into the rabbit hole, you're in the middle of a little forest. Literally. There are trees and plants everywhere. The place looks like a horticulturist's display in an Anthropologie catalogue. Oh, and tea. Lots and lots and lots of tea. 5 stars for decorations - because seriously, this is a cross between a greenhouse and Anthropologie - but the prices are absurd. There are very few things I don't like about this place. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives. I can here with my mom, we were both immediately taken by the quiet atmosphere that makes a customer feel like the shop is open just for them. The shop assistant was accommodating--didn't hesitate to hand is the different menus for the limited edition, blends, and pure teas. There were so many I liked I wanted to take them all home. I settled on the High Mountain Oolong tea, and really wanted to take it home in their unique tins. Now this was the only issue I had: part of the tea culture is preserving the teas in canisters that will keep it away from air and light. The air and light will oxidize the tea and make it lose its flavor and benefits. The shop does not give the customer the option to buy the tin separate. If a customer wants to buy the tin, they have to spend more money on the tea. Ex: 2 ounces of tea = 19.50 without tin-- Tin with same tea (3.5 ounces) = $72. I understand that it makes sense in a way because the tea is very rare. But at the same time by limiting the circumstances in which a customer can buy the tin hinders the amount of education a customer gets about the tea culture, and I feel limits the amount of money they can get from customers. I will definitely be going back though. The tea is great, the people are nice, and the atmosphere is present. read more

My last trip through the area saw me spend most of my time in Brooklyn. I didnt realize how many of the products that are hard to find at home I was basically walking distance to here. Mast brothers chocolate, Eveil Twin Beer, and now Bellocq tea. It was warm when I was last here and iced was the way I was going to go. Some exquisite and tasty black tea does the trick. This place is the definition of zen: from the great selection of the highest quality teas and soothing verdant environment with classical music to the hushed voice of the cashier, everything is clearly manicured. Not sure if you can ask for a sample of a specific tea, but they have all teas on display to sample the scents and there's always a pot or two of selected teas brewed fresh that you can enjoy in the adjacent tea room. Bellocq is my idea of heaven. A magical little spot filled with plants, beautiful things, superb teas and genuine warmth. I wandered in after a stroll through transmitter park, looking for a floral black tea blend. Ended up buying one and the lovely owner (?) gave me a generous free sample of another. We chatted about the origins of the blend, the light spiciness of rose geranium and the wonderfulness of honeydew (they had honey samples - delicious but expensive) The teas are beautifully packaged and the quality is out of this world. While their hours for retail customers are short. their selection if phenomenal. I had a hard time choosing which tea to purchase.
