The layout of the store wasn't what I imagined it to be. It almost as if they were trying to mimic a convenient store rather than identifying themselves as a true restaurant. Vertical glass fridges filled with six packs encompassed the back wall, while wooden seats and square tables were set off to the side for the customers. A conventional bar with peanuts and flat screen TVs for entertainment stood out on the right. Set off towards the end of the walkway were stocks of vibrantly packaged beer, up to the size of 2-3 rooms rented in a compacted college apartment. Selections aren't your usual Bud Light or Heineken and come from places you probably didn't imagine would exist in a small town like Charlottesville. Oh yeah, this was the real deal. I was overwhelmed with choices, but anyone should be considering that's their gimmick. On the perfect verge of tipsiness, I'm pretty sure I annoyed the heck out of the bartender or more appropriately the 'beertender' about their selections of barley pops. Since I was quite indecisive, the guy offered me a couple samples of their most populars. I ended up choosing the Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale and one of my other friends had the Allagash finished off with a slice of orange. I recommend both, but I'd lean more towards the Ale if you are looking for something different for it has an lychee undertone flavor accompanied with a dry, but tarty aftertaste. Overall, great place, great hangout spot. A little too far of a drive though if not sober. LOL. read more

We just had an absolutely horrendous meal at Beer Run. A lot to account for here, but for starters they were "out" of the ravioli (we were there at 4:25 and dinner menu starts at 4). We were then told that our order of salmon cakes fell apart in the fryer and I had to scramble to order a second choice. It only gets worse from here: our BLT order on sourdough bread showed up on store bought wheat and the "frites" were not frites, but potato wedges at least 2 days old, cool, dense, and horrible. My soup then was delivered cold - which we returned to them to warm up, and this was followed by a turkey sandwich that was far from fresh and inedible. I won't comment on the bacon - nothing was warm nor fresh. Rare event when 2 out of 2 meals are unmitigated disasters but Beer Run managed to do it. Wonderful beer selection as you might expect, primarily outdoor seating with a small bar area. They were surprisingly inflexible on the seating (I asked to change to a table in the shade, but we were forced to sit at a specific table even though many tables were open and no reservations had been made for the open tables). The ownership also neglected to level off part of the seating area, so there was a slight slant. I ordered the bison burger with potato salad. The potato salad was bland and presented as an unappetizing ball. The meat of the burger was juicy, but the chipotle barbecue sauce was not as flavorful as I hoped. Overall, I think the good outweighs the bad at Beer Run, and I would recommend stopping by Beer Run on a nice summer's day for a beer and food other than the potato salad. read more

We walked here around lunch time on a Sunday, forgetting that they would be serving brunch, but I'm so glad they were. We had the El Guapo breakfast burrito and the Pupusa Cheeky Chich (yay for sharing), which were both delicious. It was super hot and humid that day, so I also had a sangria, which was absolutely perfect. Lastly, we had a soft molasses ginger cookie with vanilla ice cream. It did not disappoint and was the right amount of soft and chewy. Service was friendly and fast and, even though they were pretty busy, we didn't have to wait for a table. I've been to Beer Run several times and it's always been a consistently great place. I have no idea what happened tonight, but I will not be returning. The pork in my meal was so dry I couldn't finish the other half, some of the frites weren't cooked all the way so they were still hard, the salmon was dry, even the Diet Pepsi was flat. Aside from that, a heavy set Karen-type woman wearing scrubs started yelling at black worker for seemingly no reason. It was obvious by what she was saying that she works at Beer Run. We could hear everything plain as day because the white woman was screaming at her saying really awful and rude things. It was extremely uncalled for and unnecessary. We felt so bad for the black woman because no one deserves to be disrespected like that, ever! My boyfriend approached the white woman and asked if she was an employee and she said she was. He told her that people should be praised in public and criticized in private and after that she got extremely rude and defensive. The saddest part out of all of this is that no one stood up for the black woman. A waiter asked if we would like to speak to the manager and we were blown away that an employee at Beer Run on her off time was allowed to speak to a fellow employee like and no one alerted the manager to the situation!! We called to see if a kid menu was available for breakfast and they said yes but the only kids menus available were lunch menus. We could only order the kids bacon and potatoes and the kids and that was fine. We liked the tacos except I was not fond of the chorizo (it had a sweetness to it from cinnamon or nutmeg or something). Beer Run has a gorgeous inside with hundreds of bottled beers from all over. Nachos: hearty, cheesy, crunchy, the salt of American bar food, comes out on a giant white plate so the nearby tables and the people waiting to sit down can stare jealously and mumble, "Look at dem beauties." No guacamole, a little dab of sour cream, but a whole lot of smothered cheese and a handful of jalapeno peppers on top. Those things will set your mouth on fire: my lips felt like they were about to shrivel up into themselves and I could only make these pained, sputtering noises for a good two minutes. Goes best with one of the 50,000 beer selections they have on tap and in the back room. They're only offered at certain times, so come accordingly. Prices are a little steep but if your wallet is hurting, you can always order one of the panini sandwiches, which are around the $8-10 range. I got the Hogwaller and only managed to eat half, thanks to the aforementioned nachos. Liked the purple cabbage in the coleslaw, but not so much the limp sad pickle which seemed to be the runt in the pickle barrel. It wasn't crunchy and tasted nothing like a pickle should, but I ate it anyway. Per usual. Tables are squeezed into the tiny crevice in front of the cash register. You will most likely get to know your neighbors very well and overhear random snippets of conversation that don't make sense out of context: "He ate his what?!" Beer Run was my first meal out in Cville when I first moved here. I have been there several times since for brunch, dinner, and happy hour. The interior wasn't what I was expecting, and it could use an upgrade. It is kind of cold and unwelcoming, almost sterile. It is a hybrid bar/restaurant and beer shop, which is awesome, but it doesn't have the best ambiance because of that. The patio is my favorite choice of seating when the weather permits. It is heated, so I have even sat out there in the late fall through January. They don't have a huge selection of beer, which is odd given the name, but they do have very unique craft beers, so if you are a beer lover, this place is for you. In terms of food, their nachos are hands down the best thing that I've had on the menu. They are huge--definitely more than enough for two people to share as a dinner. If you are here, you really must try them! I've also had a variety of other things for dinner, like a salmon banh mi that was on special, and the mussels. Everything has always been really fresh and of high quality. I've been to Beer Run once for brunch. Their Bloody Mary is awesome! I think they have won awards for it the past several years. I had the salmon sardou, which was great! I also tried a bite of the very berry French toast strata, and it was like eating dessert for breakfast. It was highly recommended by my boyfriend. Whenever I go there, I can't resist checking out their vast beer selection to purchase to go. They have a huge selection of canned and bottled beers. So this place is great because they've got a HEATED and enclosed patio, so bring the pups and sit out and enjoy! We came with a big group- like 7+ people and gratuity was included, which is normal. But before we ordered we asked if the waitress could separate checks or run separate cards and she said they couldn't, which really turned me off because we were already locked in for giving her good gratuity. I've been here multiple times for dinner and they've mostly been mediocre experiences. My last one was actively bad and it's enough to know I don't need to come back. It's strange because Charlottesville seems to love this restaurant. It's true that the store itself does have a huge selection of beer, ciders and wines which may be the draw. Last time I came here I ordered the baja fish and chips. The potato wedges were soggy from the oil and basically inedible, the fish itself was overcooked. Something on my plate left me with serious digestive issues, and the bill for the two of us (no alcohol, just two entrees) came out to be around $50, which is absurd for what we got. Typically at a restaurant I feel obligated to clean my plate, or take my leftovers with me to eat later, but here I ate a little more than half my food and then couldn't justify putting any more of it in my body. read more

Finally stopped in to eat at Beer Run after shopping there for beer for a while now. Parking was easy, although they have a pretty tight lot right in front of the property. Inside is their store with some dining room type seating and a bar as well. It's a novel concept to have the restaurant in the beer store. We opted to sit outside on the patio. We ordered off their extensive draft list - there were many great options to choose from. The real surprise was their very vegetarian friendly menu. We had lots of options to choose from and opted for the veggie burgers. They were excellent - the best in Charlottesville by far, easily beating out Citizen Burger and Burger Bach. A homemade black bean and lentil patty comes with a pretzel bun, LTO, avocado, and sprouts, as well as yummy paprika mayo. The sides were good too. As far as the menu, there weren't as many sand which options as I had hoped for but nonetheless there are good choices. We've always had good experiences when dining here but the past two times we came for pickup it was a disaster. My husband waited 30 minutes (no exaggeration) for the beer and wine we ordered online. We took a chance that a place named Beer Run might appeal to people like us. The place is super cut AND pretty small. It's a retail store as well a a restaurant. There are outdoor and indoor tables and a bar towards the back. When we drove up, there were people waiting outside and I was a little worried because I was ready to get my grub on. They must have all been trying to eat outside because we went inside and were seated immediately The menu is huge with daily breakfast, lunch, dinner, Saturday breakfast and Sunday brunch options. We saw some other people drinking what looked to be yummy Bloody Marys and I know the place has beer in the name, but these came with BACON. You know how I feel about bacon. Bacon always wins. We ordered them spicy and they had a nice amount of heat. I had the quiche of the day which was stuffed with fresh veggies and came with a nice little side salad with balsamic dressing. Space is interesting inside with the hybrid bar and kitchen right up in the store. Went with a group of friends during brunch. Didn't want to pay $12 for an omelet. I'm sorry kids, but...when did we decide Charlottesville could charge Big City prices? Anyway, I wanted Nachos, which I heard were a good value. Only to be DENIED..."only serving from the brunch menu." GRRRRRRR. Girl. Just turn on your grasshopper and cook me up some nachos! You can tell that the staff like being there and love great beers. Bottom line, if you thinking calling Bud Light "beer" is an insult to beer, you need to at least stop by Beer Run.
