Pigs in Blanket
Ellen C.

After a quick late afternoon of apple picking, we dropped in for dinner in Charlottesville per recommendation. This casual bar & restaurant also offers an extensive beer and wine selection for consumption on the premises or for retail purchases. Like I said, we came in for dinner. I had the Pigs In A Blanket. This appetizer/shareable plate was NOT some frozen corn dogs. It was better. 2 foot-long hotdogs cut in half and wrapped in a pastry that was a cross between thin puff pastry and Phyllo, sprinkled with everything seasoning. It came with ketchup and mustard for dipping. I didn't even try the ketchup, but the mustard was awesome. The hubby ordered the Basque Half Chicken. It was like Hanna Montana... the best of both worlds. Part chicken breast, part dark meat with skin over mashed potatoes. It you're familiar with afrittata but with chicken. For me, it needed a little salt, but I didn't add any on it. Can't wait to come back!

Korean chicken and waffle special! : )

Menu had lots of options that you don't see everyday - like the Korean chicken and waffle which was surprisingly good! Our waiter was so nice and helpful (I wish I remembered their name) and so was the hostess. Love the variety of offerings in addition to beer and wine since I don't drink. The coffee was really good! So glad our family took us there while we were visiting.

Stopped in for some wine and the new menu. Always happy with the wine and happy hour. It's a great go to spot. The current new menu is amazing! I got the Shrimp Aglio e Olio and my friend got the Salmon Risotto and we got the frites to share. My shrimp plate was perfection. The shrimp was juicy and the flavor in the noodles was *chef kiss. We sat at the bar and the service was quick and the bartender was attentive! Highly recommend stopping in for a bite to eat.

Doesn't get much better than this!

I love this place. In town from Philadelphia for a wedding, I popped by on a Friday afternoon while my fiance was at the salon. Amazing selection, great prices, helpful service. Menu looked (and smelled!) great although I wasn't dining. Had two drafts, both excellent and ones I had never had before. Bought a ton of awesome stuff, and was even able to get a nice bottle of prosecco to take to the party the next day. Would be a regular if I was closer, but man, what a great spot!

Few places on this rock can match just the sheer amount of alcoholic beverage options this place can provide. Like you name the country, state, hell maybe even county and I think they have a beer from that location. That being said even there food stands out which totally took me off guard. I was fully content on this being a beer place but now a whole new world of possibilities have opened. I wish the location was a tad better and the outdoor seating was not a parking lot. BUT they are making due with what they have and totally crushing it. Would come here again.

Checked out this place for dinner and it did not disappoint. Sat on the outdoor patio and enjoyed the plants and flowers they have out there. We had a small plate of nachos with beef and beans and it was delicious. And then we each also had the chicken Philly on a pretzel bun and that was delicious as well. My friend had the pasta, she said it was really good. And I had the potato wedges and the sauce was really good. I also had the raspberry Italian soda with cream and it was so crisp and refreshing! They have plenty of drinks for sale inside their market. They had many desserts on their menu that looked great, but we were just too full to get anything. This is a great tucked away spot that I would highly recommend you check out.

Nice atmosphere. Right off the main road, set back a bit. Nice tented patio outside to hang with our dog. I liked the Vienna Lager (Devil's Backbone) and I'm not a huge beer drinker. The nachos were really good! Lots of toppings. No dry chips which is exactly how I like them! So did Brody (our dog)! Staff was friendly and accommodating even though we walked in 1/2 hour before closing on. Monday night. Would definitely recommend this place and will be back before heading home to NJ!

Nachos - Yum. I guess I'm a pig. lol

This place is clearly a local c-ville favorite. I have been here twice, most recently this past Monday holiday for drinks and appetizer. We were celebrating a new purchase. The service and staff are delightful and super nice. Two glasses of wine a piece and nachos (which we got the black bean option) small size. It was prefect. I want to come back and try both the breakfast tacos and bone in pork chop dish. We'll be back folks. Nicely done.

Food is mediocre at best. Turkey panini was cold, and very dense. Frites are not that, just pan roasted potato wedges.

We saw…read moreonline that they had a very large, pet-friendly beer garden, so we came here after a long day of hiking to relax with some beers. When we arrived, the parking lot was very full and we quickly realized that they had trivia going on inside. While working our way through the taproom to go outside, we had to walk past a table that is right next to the patio door. It had a big trivia group around it and they had a very reactive dog that lunged and tried to bite both of our dogs. Not a great start to our time there. Once we got outside, we realized we could sit anywhere because not one other person was outside. I stayed by a fire pit area with the dogs while my husband went inside to grab beers. He came back with our first round and we planned out some more places we wanted to go to in Charlottesville during our stay. Not once while we were there (for 2 hours or so) did a single staff member come out to check on us or offer to turn on the gas fire pit. My husband said that the woman at the bar the couple of times he went up there was friendly enough, but there were several other people on staff that didn't acknowledge him/us our whole visit. As it got closer to closing time, we noticed people leaving, but the parking lot seemed to stay full with the same amount of cars. I'm not sure if there is a car repair place nearby and they share parking or if 90% of the people inside decided to ride share home, but it made us think for a long time that a lot of people were still inside for trivia night. My husband went inside to close out and saw that only one other table was still there, so we packed up our stuff we brought for the dogs and went to head inside to leave after finishing the last of our beers. We took our empty glasses up to the bar and the last table inside had just left, so we were the last customers. The woman standing at the end of the bar completely ignored us, didn't thank us for coming in, and stayed on her phone the whole time. It was just super rude and only enhanced the overall unpleasant experience we had during our time there. The beers were good and they seemed like a popular spot for a trivia night, so maybe it's better to visit and stay inside, but we didn't have a good time and wouldn't come back if we are ever in town again. I did really like that they had a community area for fresh food for people in need.

Kardinal Hall hits that perfect Charlottesville sweet spot: great food, great beer, great people,…read moreand a space that feels both fun and thoughtfully designed. My Wahoo daughter brought me here during Family Weekend, and now I totally get why this place is a UVA favorite. The building itself is part of a beautifully restored historic industrial complex off Preston Avenue. It's an adaptive-reuse space (formerly part of the old Coca-Cola bottling works), and the design keeps that industrial character alive: tall ceilings, exposed materials, and a layout that feels open, social, and easygoing. The outdoor area is especially smartly done. They've got roll-down fabric walls and overhead heat lamps that keep the patio comfortable even when the temperature dips. It's basically an all-weather beer-garden vibe, and it works. Here's how our meal went down: * Shared starter: the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel. Warm, soft, perfectly salted, and killer with both the mustard and the cheese sauce. * My entrée: the Local Steak Salad -- gorgeous presentation, tender grass-fed beef, and those pickled turnips, radish slices, and greens in herb buttermilk dressing absolutely tied it together. * My daughter's entrée: Bratwurst, which disappeared quickly, so that tells you what you need to know. Service setup is counter-service for food with table drop-off, and drinks are ordered directly at the bar. It's efficient, friendly, and gives the whole place an easygoing "European beer hall meets Charlottesville neighborhood spot" feel. Kardinal Hall is one of those places where good food, good architecture, and good energy all line up. If you're in town -- especially visiting UVA -- this is a must-stop.
