Devil's Backbone, like a good story, doesn't try too hard--and that's exactly why it works. We wandered in for an early dinner, the kind of stop you tell yourself will be quick and sensible. But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. Devils Backbone has more business going on in the warmer weather. We visited at Christmas. The main restaurant and gift shop was open. There were outside fire pits. During the summer, there are BBQ areas and lots of out door seating. A large outside stage has bands and entertainment. There is a campground and RV area with shared shower houses. The camping area is year round. The gift shop has outdoor colors (forest green, browns) tops and sweatshirts. The long sleeved t-shirts are $29. The short sleeved tye died shirts were my favorite. The restaurant has the "resident" stuffed bear. At the entrance. We were expecting a 15 min wait but were seated earlier. The menu has a beer and beverage menu. The dining menu has burgers, fries and vegetarian items. We enjoyed hot chocolate. Our friends had sandwiches and fries. I enjoyed the vegan chili. It was delicious. Spiral noodles didn't work in the Mac and cheese. The place wasn't crowded. I bet that the grounds would be crowded with guests during the summer. read more

We stayed at the campground at this brewery. They have hiking trails all around the brewery and the campground is incredibly affordable. Thruhiker's can also stop at this brewery. They offer free camping if you're Thruhiker. The beer, the beer, the beer need I say more so good so good so good! Little known fact, they also brew bourbon and whiskey that are straight up contenders for your favorites. If you like bourbon, this is a place for you. read more

Devils backbone as a complex with multiple eateries a distillery campground etc is a 4-5/5 star. It's worth going and seeing. My previous review is more detailed and still feels relevant. This review is just for the food. The food has definitely fallen off in the last few years. A menu that once was a bit more interesting (a bbq platter with ribs, sausage, pulled pork, chicken dip and pita, I think back in the day there was probably some sort of pasta) has pretty much devolved into the same old tired millennial "Brussels sprouts and truffle fries with house burger" menu. Nothing we saw on the menu felt that interesting. That said, the food is fine - the pulled pork sandwich and the fried chicken sandwich were both decent, but the mac and cheese I once loved is gone replaced with something totally lackluster. Same with the fries, same with the coleslaw... and so on. Overall the food is just not the main event, the beer is. Idk. I used to love eating here and now it just feels like they are doing the bare minimum. Kinda a bummer. read more

This is a great venue. There is indoor and outdoor seating. It almost feels like a large vacation home with an fireplace and places to sit outside. The menu is not extensive but good for a brewery. The nachos had a beer cheese sauce was really good. The food was good and my issue is that the prices are out of line for the food. Knock off $3-$4 off of the menu and $1-$2 off drinks and this place is easy 4.5. "Truffle" fry upgrades are sneaky ways to upcharge menu items with out giving much of actual value. The brown ale was good but also expensive. My new gauge for restaurants is how much of the menu feels like it was provided by sysco or other restaurant supplier vs how much do they make. This is our second time out here for the camping experience and we truly had even more fun the second time. It's such a win for us. You camp in the camping area, do a short walk, and *poof* you're at a brewery. I don't know why the overall score was not higher but I can say that our visit was spot on. Our server was very friendly, attentive to our needs, and just super great to work with. He was chatty when we wanted to chat and left us alone when you could tell we wanted our family time. The food was great and I'd like to wonder if they're improving their training. This brewery was great. I was with my family celebrating my daughter and future son in law's engagement. 15 plus in our party. There was ample parking so no issue there. Plenty of places to sit and converse with friends and family. The grounds were clean. There was a 2 man band for entertainment and they took song requests from my 2 year old granddaughter. "Wheels on the Bus" Corn hole and other games available. The wait for beverages was streamlined so the wait was minimal. Bathrooms were maintained. I would go back for sure if ever back in the area. 4 of us spent the weekend at Devils Backbone Campground and visited the brewery a number of times during our trip. Campgrounds: The tented sites were nice- they were in the trees and there were a few sites that even had a bit of a private feel. Plus they were right next to the HEATED bathhouse. The bathhouse was clean and had real toilets (not portapottys) and showers. On a cold weekend, the warmth was much appreciated! The RV/Tent sites were SUPER small. Like you pretty much were sharing a fire pit with your neighbors. If your plan is to be inside your rv the whole time- fine. but otherwise there is zero privacy. Recommend getting 2 sites for yourself. It wasn't especially beautiful or scenic there- but it was super fun being so close to the brewery and literally in the midst of TONS of other places to go hang/drink at. The Restaurant: There food was fine. it wasn't anything special in my opinion. We were all excited it was the breweries "16th birthday" and they were giving out pint glasses for the first 100 customers. We went for that the folks behind the bar were like "huh?". they ended up getting some pint glasses out of storage that had a STICKER of a birthday cake with candles on the glass and was like "uhh here you go.". it was very anticlimactic. I don't think their service was amazing- it seemed like there was a lot of staff just laying around waiting for the next person to bother them. There is so much land and room for fun outside- I wish they had had more heaters or fire pits! It seems like they have this awesome space that can't be used in the fall/winter! It's massive though. The weekend was really fun and I do think we'll be back to try one of the group sites when the weather is more conducive to the brewery being more active and lively! read more

Interesting campus. All wood buildings with fire pits with outdoor bars that looks like a fun place in warm weather. The main building, with the restaurant, has the outdoorsy feel with animal heads and photographs. We were greeted and seated immediately. The menu was somewhat diverse, with brisket being a specialty. My wife ordered the grilled cheese and brisket sandwich. I had the shaved beef sandwich on ciabatta bread, basically a French dip with smoked meat. I also had a 8-pt IPA and the wife had a Scottish ale. All was excellent. There's a lot of good and not so good, but this review is about both the brewery and the campground. I cannot find the campground separately on here. The biggest issue is the set up of the full hook-up RV sites. Every RV has water, power, and sewer hookups on the same side of their RV. For some bizarre reason, Devil's Backbone sites have water and power on one side, and sewer on the other. It's nearly impossible to fully hook up your camper in a setup like this. Thankfully we have two water hoses (one for cold weather, and one normal) and we were able to hook them together so they'd be long enough. That also meant tons of hoses running through the site. Apparently this is on odd numbered sites only (ie, we were in site 7, friends in site 15). We hear that even numbered sites are normal. Overall, just an inconvenient set up, especially for the premium price (over $300 for two nights). The brewery is great though - tons of different drink options, food, live music, and activities. read more

Came in on a rainy Saturday to test it out since we always loved Devils Backbone canned cocktails and IPAs. It's definitely a large spot when the weather is nice but in terms of indoor seating there's not a ton of seating. Lots of fire pits and covered areas outdoors though so even on a rainy day the place was busy. The outdoor bar was open and we waited in the cool cigar lounge for our table. There was a 45 minute wait even though tables were open (you order by QR code). Our waiter was quite nice though so we never waited long for drinks or food. I highly recommend the nachos and we asked them for more chips because the chip to toppings ratio was large (which is rare). We got the wings too which were perfectly smoky but would have liked a bit more sauce. The food menu was great if you were a bbq fan but would have loved to see a few more simple options like a grilled chicken sandwich, etc. We stopped into the liquor store and the merch area and prices were fair in both, with some nice shirts and the canned drinks to go. read more

Owch, this one hurt to write because the first time I went here everything was fantastic. Devils Backbone was out of 3/4 of their menu. I really wanted ribs or wings... they also used to have fried pickles (no longer on the menu) - all sold out. You'll see other reviews saying it's all on a QR code and it's true you have no server. You order off the QR code like you would at an airport which is so impersonal. Only way I could see it being better is if you could write a note at the bottom of your menu item saying "sauce on the side" or whatever... flagging down a server when you don't have one designated is not great. On to the food... avoid the roasted vegetable bisque at all costs. I'm a HUGE soup fan and this tasted like it was bottom of the barrel and chunks. Ew. Fish and chips was good just over fried... best part was the side of Mac and cheese and coleslaw. The dip for the fish and chips was very refreshing I enjoyed that very much. Beautiful location in the mountains of Virginia and right by some gorgeous free hikes! So refreshing to visit this location during any season before/after a hike or just for a nice drive through the mountains. It can be a bit of a long drive but it's worth it. Food is decent bar food, beer is aplenty and fresh. Service is really quick! It's a lovely spot if you're in the area though I wouldn't go too far out of my way to visit unless you are a huge fan of all the beer (which I am). read more

We frequent this brewery each time we're in town for an event at the Wintergreen Resort. The outdoor area is nice for group gatherings with plenty of picnic tables for seating. They even have some games for entertainment. They have snacks available at the outdoor bars. This time around we ordered a giant charcuterie pretzel. Service is always quick and easy. We haven't been able to dine at the restaurant yet. It's usually very busy when we visit. read more

I love the ambiance of this spot. Everyone that works here is super cool and chill, and I cannot say enough great things about our server, John (and his tie dye- top notch!). John was literally the best server, even though we placed our own order- he was still very attentive & thorough. The only things I didn't love was that I couldn't specify that I wanted my roseland hot chicken sandwich extra crispy (there's no spot for comments or anything in the app, although they do make it easy to add or take away condiments) and the chicken was a little rubbery (for lack of a better description). I only ate half and didn't even wanna bring the rest in a box. (It almost tasted like it had been made and was sitting out for a while- it also came out freakishly fast). My partner and I had a really good time walking around and drinking for the little over an hour wait to sit down. It was a fun experience! DBB is a beautiful campsite. My group of 21 reserved sites 101, 102 and 103 which are all adjacent to each other. There is ample tree coverage at these spots, so its perfect for camping in the summer to avoid direct sunlight. During our stay, we camped through a sizeable rainstorm, but stayed dry by setting up a series of tarp A frames from the trees to provide dry communal areas. The group sites sit away from the regular sites and RVs which is a nice touch for privacy. The sites are also a brief 5 minute walk to the main brewery and the nicely appointed bath house. A few criticisms. There was miscommunication with the parking situation. Hipcamp states that 2 cars are allowed per site, but on the official DBB camping webpage, it states 3. I reached out directly to DBB and the rep said 4 cars per site were allowed. After our first night, we had a staff member stop by and tell us that we had way to many cars on site, and it should only be 3. So, everyone needs to get on the same page with this piece. The second criticism is the firewood. DBB states you cannot bring in your own wood and you can only use wood purchased from the campsite or scavenged on the property. At $8 a bundle, you would expect this wood to be premium stuff, however we were less than impressed. All 5 bundles of wood purchased had dampness at its core, meaning it was not kiln dried and cut somewhat recently. At the DBB basecamp, they had firepits burning the good stuff, so it's not like they can't provide it read more

Maybe it was an "off" time but the atmosphere really lacked. Vibe felt kinda dark and depressing. There were 3 other tables besides us. Were seated near the bar. The setup and finding where to go to enter are awkward. Our service was quick and nice. The food was good. The price a little high. They really need to do something to be a little more alive and upbeat. I think people come for and return for an overall experience that includes a comfortable, clean, inviting and upbeat atmosphere as well as timely efficient friendly service, quality good food served hot and little touches that are memorable. I wanted to love this place and add it to a list of regular/return spots but it just lacked being memorable enough to drive back out to. read more

Came in with my husband and grand for dinner on a very slow night. Service started out great. Toward the end of our meal, my son and his wife arrived in town earlier than expected and were starving, so they met us at the restaurant. We told our server ahead of time, paid our bill so he could close it out, and asked to move to a table for five. Even though there were multiple empty tables across several sections and no dinner rush whatsoever, the staff acted like this was a major inconvenience. They discussed it loudly among themselves, made it awkward, and our server kept pointing out that "some of your party already ate," which was unnecessary and honestly uncomfortable. We weren't asking to skip ahead of anyone--just to move to one of the many open tables. By the time we left around 8 p.m., our entire section was empty, so the pushback made even less sense. We still tipped 50%, but the attitude and lack of basic hospitality really surprised us. On a night that slow, accommodating a simple table move shouldn't have been this hard. read more

Devils Backbone is one of my favorite beer brands, so while staying nearby, we had to visit. We were not disappointed! It is a large venue with a great indoors and outdoors! We visited mid afternoon on a Monday and there were very few people there. We had a dog with us and were seated right away at the dog friendly patio area adjacent to the main building. Service was great and they had all their wonderful beers on tap. The four of us had several 5 ounce samplers of their beers and ordered the nachos with chicken. The nachos were among the best I've had. The chips were crisp and it seemed like they used a couple different types of melted cheese on it. We visited 7/8/23 and I would specifically like to give a shout to John, he was our waiter during our visit and he did not disappoint. My mom got a cheeseburger with fries and I got a cheeseburger wrap, he was very helpful when we had difficulty with the Toast ordering and did everything the ole fashion way. He took his time and spoke with us about different things and honestly, I felt like I could have been friends with the guy. I love the cabin feeling with the wildlife decor at DB, it's place I imagine being stuck at during a snow storm with plenty of alcohol to entertain me. Have tried the Vienna Lager & all the flavors of the SMASH drinks at our local Food Lion, so when we found out the brewery had a camp attached, we had to check it out! At the campground-Quick check in, sites were very easy to get to, not far from the bath house, and a quick walk from our site to the brewery (ours was the closest site to the pathway getting to the brewery!). The camp store sold firewood & ice. Some of the cleanest bathrooms I've seen for a campground, and loved the very big shower stalls! Made showering with a toddler much easier. The site we stayed at had a fire pit with a handle grill & picnic table. At the brewery-We only got food the first night, but it was fantastic! You can order inside at the host stand or bar and get it 'to-go' to bring food outside, or get seated by the hostess if you want to sit inside or on their patio. We chose to-go since we brought our dogs, and sat at a picnic table outside. It took less than 10minutes for all 4 of us to get our food. 3 of us got the pulled pork sandwich and 1 got the brat, all served with fries and coleslaw. Sandwich was loaded down with pork and the bbq sauce was great, and the brat with the jalapeño mustard was really good as well. I thought it was really neat that they had an indoor & outdoor bar that had different drink selections! The apricot sour was recommended by one of the bartenders and it was so good I got a growler to take home. One shop sold extra camp supplies & merch, and the other sold cigars. Didn't check out the distillery but another option for drinks! Since we stayed at the campground we were given a discount card for food & merch, so we had to pick up a coozie and one of their best selling t-shirts, and they gave us stickers with the purchase! We could not get over how dog/kid friendly this place is, and just overall people were so friendly! The second night we sat on the lawn, enjoyed our drinks while we listened to the live music, and had the absolute best time letting our son play with all the other kids and enjoying the beautiful weather. We will definitely be back and we really enjoyed our stay at Devils Backbone! read more

Gone are the days of a quaint base camp; now being owned by Anheuser-Busch puts DBBC in a whole new category. Eclectic FOH Team, which can be a hit or miss. Food and beverage was fun to explore. This is my second time coming here. It's a cozy restaurant with a nice atmosphere. The bone dipper sandwich is really good and the fries are seasoned well. One benefit to this place is that it's one of the few restaurants open on Monday. Which is a plus when you are leaving Wintergreen after a long weekend like my friends and I do. One of the downsides of this restaurant is their QR code ordering system. I don't mind the system itself, but if you need certain customizations to your food you have to flag it as "allergy-inform server". Another issue we had was two things were added to my check that weren't supposed to be (my friend changed her daughter's order and that was added to both of our bills and my other friend's "complimentary" pretzel). Both of these were added by the server and had to be removed by the manager. The reason for complimentary pretzel being in quotes is because the server initially said it was going to be a compensation for my friend's VERY undercooked burger. read more

So sad to see such a low rating for this place. I've been a huge Devils Backbone fan for many years. Vienna Lager is one of my favorite beers. My girlfriend and I were so excited to finally go visit here. The environment and atmosphere are unmatched. Right smack in the middle of the blue ridge mountains. Gorgeous views. Great outdoor community focused atmosphere. Plenty of well placed and well designed gathering areas. Outdoor pub, cigar and spirits bar, outdoor grill house, animal and kid friendly. This place was designed for gathering with friends and making memories over a pint. We didn't eat any food, but we did have beer. We got a flight with 4 different beers. I wasn't blown away by any of them, but one (Smokehaus Bock) was very good with strong bacon notes. We also tried the slushies (I had the pumpkin one which was very good)! I can't say service was bad or good. It seems that it was more focused toward efficiency then good customer service. Overall I would definitely go back!
