We arrived in Olean on Thursday evening August 24,2023. We have not been to the Beef and Barrel in over 10 years. Our server Dodie was very attentive and we both ordered the beef on wick amazing, my only complaint was the fries were not hot but warm... the beef was as remembered delicious and the kimmelweck roll was just perfect. We both ordered dessert to go and the Graham pie was devine as well as the almond joy pie... If we did live 4.5 hours away this would be our weekly spot. read more

The roast beef sandwiches we got (one on "Weck", one "Melt") were SO GOOD. These people slice their meat fresh off the cow in the back yard - NO DOUBT. And they asked us how we liked it (Medium Rare, please!) which we appreciated. Both our orders needed extra salt, in particular the "Au Jus" which I got on the side needed salt too, and we made good use of the little cups of horseradish to reason our meat with but, in general, we feel like we just discovered a whole new animal in their "farm to table" beef and we'd encourage anyone driving by to skip the chains and grab their takeout here! read more

Really delicious beef on weck ! I'm a weirdo, I eat mine with ketchup instead of horse radish. Let me just say that the beef is ALWAYS 4 1/2-5 stars, sometimes it's a little fatty. I ordered no au juas and asked that my bun be dry. I understand that it's delicious juicy hot meat on a roll. I'm just a texture eater and soggy bread grosses me out. The time before last my bottom bun was such complete mush I couldn't even pick it up. This time they did better. Half way through I just picked my yummy meat out with a fork and ate it alone because my fingers were going through the bottom bun. Fries are hit or miss. Sometimes they are a good portion, crisp, and hot. Other times they are soggy or cold and/or just plain lacking. I laughed when I read the other review about only getting a few fries because that's happened to me before. I literally asked the waitress once if it was a joke or if they ran out. That waitress apologized and brought me out a small plate with more. Not everyone gets the same amount of fries. They should fix this inconsistency especially because fries are dirt cheap for the restaurant to buy and they can make or break a meal. If I didn't play musical fries every time I'm here this would be 4 stars. I'll be back and hopefully my next review will be a 4 or 5 star. read more

This place has been in my home town for YEARS. It's well known for their beef sandwiches. They have a beef bar that serves hot and amazing beef right at your fingertips. I never have a complaint about any of their food. Everything is great from their home made sauces like ranch and honey mustard, too their home made chicken tenders and fries with their beef gravy. It's all delicious and worth it. Don't even get me started on their home made desserts!!!! They make their own peppermint snow ball ice cream and it's so delicious as well. Was slightly disappointed my last visit earlier in the week. The beef was amazing, as usual. What bothered me was the side of fries I ordered. No lie...there were seven (7) fries. Yes I counted because it appeared lame. There was about a teaspoon of gravy. Okay...as shocked as I was, I was more shocked when another person in our party was brought his side of fries...a sandwich size plate. The last two times I've been to the Beef N Barrel I have been extremely disappointed. One time I ordered stuff chicken and it was cold. One month later I ordered the stuffed pork. Same thing. Was seated quickly at 6PM on a Saturday night although the restaurant was fairly full. I had trouble deciding what I wanted but went for the prime rib since I was at a beef place after all. The cut was large and rare to my liking but it lacked any sort of.. tenderness that you would expect from prime rib. Good but not great. Expect a good amount of horseradish to go with it. A bit pricey for the area at $24. I know the beef on weck here doesn't disappoint and is always melt in your mouth worthy. Will have to stick to this next time I'm here. Boyfriend had the sirloin special with blue cheese and tomatoes on top. I'm not a blue cheese fan but the meat itself was flavorful and had a nice char on the outside. Not a bad price of $16 for the special. The desserts here are always good from what I've gotten (several different ones) and you definitely have to leave room for them, even for the slice of pie. Not at all what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I stepped into the restaurant. The host was awesome and funny did his job very well even stopped to pick up a wrapped! Great job. Menu was surprisingly well thought out there was something for everyone. Started off with the cheese fingers great taste. Salads just the right size. For the main course strip steak with mushrooms and onions. Steak cooked beautifully. Onions still alittle raw.. but all in all great time good food highly recommended read more

What else can I say other than this is the place to go like the name says if you want beef. Their beef platters are out of this world. It does get surprisingly busy, especially because this is Olean and they have a huge space. They tend to fill it up even on weeknights. Stopped at the Beef'n Barrel this past Friday after honoring a true local hero, Major Patrick Miller. We weren't necessarily dressed for this fine establishment as we had rode my dad's motorcycle from the Buffalo area but we were early enough (arrived around 4pm) and welcomed nevertheless. Our waitress was incredibly friendly but not over the top which I appreciated. I ordered the 8 oz. Sirloin, medium rare of course, while my dad was torn between one of the specials, the kabob's served on rice, or the roast beef sandwich. With our waitress's advice, he decided on the roast beef. Both of our meals were very, very good. There was just the right amount of food, even though I didn't finish all of my delicious garlic mashed potatoes. Both meals were tender and cooked to perfection. The hours are great for this establishment and I was pleased to see how clean the restaurant was. If I should venture out this way again, I'd love to sit on the patio outside. read more

This has been a favorite restaurant of mine in Western NY since my first time eating here in 2011. It is certainly my first choice for roast beef, even against many well-known and reputable establishments that have food of comparable quality (in saying this, I'm referring to restaurants within the counties that make up the greater WNY region, i.e. Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus). I no longer reside in WNY, so I seized the opportunity to eat here yesterday, while in the Buffalo area visiting family. Although over an hour's drive from my parents' house, I find that there are several factors that make the trip worthwhile. Whenever I come here, I am greeted in a most welcoming fashion. Additionally, I have noticed that their staff turnover seems low - I usually see several employees that I had encountered on previous visits. Whomever tends to me is always pleasant (Cheryl was our server yesterday, and she was prompt, knowledgable and friendly). To me, these are signs that the staff is treated well here - something that makes me want to continue supporting this business. The atmosphere is both classy and relaxed, with elegant lighting and furniture, a carpeted floor, and comfortable, spacious seating. This is the type of place where I am content having a long meal. It's a great environment for getting together with family and friends, a casual lunch, OR for a romantic date. My favorites are the hot German potato salad and the sliced roast beef in au jus. However, you will not go wrong with any beef or potato item on the menu. Their salads are fresh and several of their dressings are made in-house. Although their specialty is roast beef, I highly recommend trying to save room for dessert, as theirs are out of this world! read more

A point of destination on our cross-country journey brought me to Smethport, PA to visit my best friend of 30+ years. I wanted to see Olean and they suggested this place. I would travel an hour to have this food! This is as good as it gets when it comes to juicy, delicious beef. One must have when you go to this restaurant is the chicken wings. They are so extra crunchy and the batter is amazing. Also, the french onion soup is also to-die-for... The only downfall is where it is located, because it is too far from where I live now. Yes, I just reviewed the Beef 'n' Barrel in January, but I simply had to share that the hosting, staff attentiveness, and dinners served during my father's 80th birthday party at the restaurant on March 12 were fantastic! In particular, wait staff member Chris Q. was outstanding in her service to our party of 18 people. (Thank you, Chris! We think you're a gem!) The food was great - I think the German potato salad I had yesterday was the best I've ever eaten there - and of course, my beef on 'weck was wonderful. I'm enjoying the leftover half sandwich today. I was quite surprised at how low the bill was for our party. Granted, only one person ordered alcohol (one glass of wine), so I'm taking that into consideration. I guess I should know better than to order chicken at a restaurant with "Beef" in its name. Stopped in Olean overnight while traveling and the hotel recommended the restaurant. We sat outside since it was a surprisingly cool night for July 1st. I ordered a dinner special for the night -- Chicken Florentine and my wife ordered the green salad with chicken. The good: My wife liked her salad, but said the chicken was dry. Loved her Bosco Bear drink. The bad: The chicken Florentine was not good. Chicken was the driest I have ever had at a restaurant, and the "cheddar cheese" topping was a grainy sauce with almost no flavor. Stuffing was meh at best. The ugly: That Florentine sauce -- yellow-orange and gritty looking. It literally drowned the entire plate and the lump of chicken Florentine. Looked worse than it tasted. It should never be on the menu again. Service was acceptable though our server never inquired about the meals and it took awhile to get seated on a Thursday. I'm sure the beef dishes are as good as others post, but they don't know chicken. tl;dr: Don't order the chicken. read more

The drinks had great showmanship a little light on the alcohol but it made up for it with taste. The menu had several different selections and it was all very tasty. With two entrances and it being very popular, the times we've been there it's a mad-house of frustrated people waiting. My husband and were on a road trip and had agreed to not eat at any chain restaurants along the way. We were staying in Olean overnight and this seemed to be the local go-to restaurant, so we went there. It was about 4:45 on a Saturday afternoon, and we were greeted warmly and seated immediately. When I say that this restaurant is IMMACULATE, it is not an exaggeration. There was not a speck of dust or dirt in the entire establishment. I watched as tables were cleared and readied for the next customers, and it was a thing of beauty. The tables were CLEANED. Not wiped down...CLEANED. The chairs are wooden with the old fashioned spindles, and each and every spindle was cleaned, and then the seats were buffed until they shined. There were two crumbs under the table, and they used the sweeper under there. It almost made me cry. There are too few restaurants like this, where the staff take pride in their workplace. We were just passing through, but we saw that most of the customers were regulars who were greeted by name and treated like family. The French Onion Soup Au Gratin was perfect. All the fresh breads were wonderful. My husband had a roast beef sandwich and he said it was delicious, but he made the mistake of going too heavy on the horseradish (provided on the table) before tasting how powerful it was. His eyes and nose were running while he raved about how good the beef was. I had the cajun chicken salad, which was wonderful but a little too salty. That's what I get for ordering chicken at a place called the Beef n Barrel. We finished up by sharing a cinnamon apple dessert, and it was the perfect ending to the meal. I've seen some other reviews stating that the restaurant is a little on the pricy side, and that almost stopped us from going there because we thought we would be underdressed. It was completely casual with people in all types of clothing, but it did have a "special occasion" feel to it. It was comfortable, and we could not believe how inexpensive it turned out to be! The dessert we shared was less than six dollars and was something most restaurants would have charged $12 for. All in all, it was under $50 for the two of us. It was an absolute bargain, considering the quality of the food and the caliber of the service, which was WONDERFUL. Angela made the evening perfect by being welcoming, friendly, helpful, and super efficient. She seemed to want to be there...which leads me back to the guy who seated us. He seemed to be the manager or owner, and he was everywhere at once, offering words of encouragement to the staff everywhere he went. "The Beef" has always been my favorite restaurant in the Olean area. Yesterday, I phoned in and ordered two luncheon salads "to go." I asked for an 11:30 a.m. pick up time. When I arrived, two young employees/women were at the desk/pick up area and were talking to others on the phones. In a time of a pandemic, my plan was to run in, pick up my food, and run out. The women were on extended conversations. After waiting maybe 5 minutes, I moved to the area where there were 2 pick up packages. One of the girls on the phone yelled out that I shouldn't touch anything and that SHE would take care of me as soon as SHE was off the phone. Her manner was brusk and condescending. I was embarrassed. I wondered if she would talk to her grandmother like that. PJ and Mike are always charming but ...you need to provide some "be nice" training for these important staff people. read more
