The peppermint snowball- the quantity is too big for me but also never a disappointment. It is my go to. Chocolate Mudd Pie here is also a fave of mine. The apple pie and Tin roof sundae (if they still offer that) do not stand out for me personally. My sirloin w mushrooms and onion rings was fine and bread was fresh. Salad was reasonably fresh. 4 stars was for service. We got rushed near the end and a relative was still working on putting stuff away in his to go box. Whenever we return "home", this is one of those must go to places. While we have found roast beef on kummelweck sandwiches here and there in our travels, none compares to the beef on weck they serve here at the Beef n Barrel. The restaurant is always attractively kept, we are welcomed and seated promptly, the waitress knows the menu and answers questions cheerfully. And the food is brought out in a timely manner. When we take our friends there, sometimes they don't order that sandwich because there are many other choices on the menu that are equally as wonderful. Wonderful sandwich. Ordered the beef on weck with both types of potato salad. The sandwich was pulled high full of super flavorful beef on an amazing kummel weck bun. Delicious! The two types of potato salad were interesting. The German style was good but a little to vinegary for me. And the regular potato salad was good but nothing to get excited about. The weather is finally getting better and it time for a ride. Linda and I went to the Beef n Barrel in Olean. A bit of a drive but absolutely worth it. Linda had the spaghetti with meatballs and it was delicious...I stayed traditional and had a Beef n Wick with German Potato Salad. Both were great and it justifies the drive from Hamburg. Decided while taking a ride south of Olean to view the changing fall colors. We chose to pick up beef on weck sandwiches at the iconic Beef and Barrel. Pros-our sandwiches were generous Con-The roll doesn't stand up to the moist beef. Our medium rare was medium well and honestly, the meat was on the tough side. As these were packaged to go, we were disappointed that a few napkins and plastic utensils were not included. For clarity, it wasn't my first time and Beef and Barrel. Would I say this is the absolute best roast beef we have ever eaten; no. That belongs to a small roast beef place in New Hampshire of all places. But this is a close second! The beef on a weck is very good! We got it medium rare and it was a good medium, but still absolutely delicious. You didn't need au jus or horseradish with it because it was simply delicious. I was a big fan of the American potato salad as the german had bacon and it through the taste off for me. The sandwich plus 2 sides and a soup was plenty for my husband and I to share. If you were starving, it may not be, but I don't eat a lot so it worked well for us. The French onion soup was however some of the best my husband had had. I wasn't feeling soup, but the cheese was delicious. This was well worth stopping for because it's far closer than New Hampshire. But that said, if you are ever driving by and need a good roast beef sandwich, this really is the place. read more

It's a bit painful to write this review as this has been my favorite restaurant for decades and the only place I make sure to go to the one time a year I am back home. Such a shame as the food and service have seem to gone to subpar. I ordered a beef on wick medium and it came out extremely rare. The waitress never came back and checked until everyone else had long been done eating and was ready to go. This could have easily been fixed if the waitress was paying attention(she only had 3 tables). The cashiers asked how everything was but didn't really seem to be trained to respond when I replied "not great". One star for nostalgia and one star for the drinks. Will probably try again next year hopefully they work on training and I can update to say it is a once again beloved restaurant, until then not recommended. read more

I have been going to the Beef'n Barrel for as long as I can remember. The food is always great and the service is even better. Real classy place. I usually get 10 wings, roast beef au jus & a salad. Love their homemade italian dressing and the fresh rolls that come with the salad. The wings are breaded so I tend to get the sauce on the side so they don't get too soggy. This whole experience was such a let down. We waited awkwardly in a line at 6:30 on a Monday. They were only seating tables every 20 min or so, I'm assuming to help stagger the tables, but it was odd and frustrating. 25-30 min later we got seated at a table and waited another 15 to even be acknowledged!!! No "oh I'm so sorry or anything". Susan had the personality of a wet noodle. Bar drinks took another 15 min and she never came back to order our food even though we were ready!! We didn't get bread even though everyone else did. Finally got it after asking for it after we received our meals. One positive: French onion soup was tasty. Food took forever once finally ordered. I ordered the 8 oz New York strip which came out a thin, burnt, fatty and nasty piece of meat. What the actual.... I can't believe management even let that get plated? The onion rings that were on top of it were ok and the loaded baked potato was the star of the show/ which is sad. She offered to have the steak recooked? Yeah right. We didn't have another hour to deal with their crap. Extremely unprofessional, slow, and unappetizing. I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's one of my favorite restaurants. The staff is always friendly, it has a great, cozy atmosphere and the desserts are the best I've ever had. I personally recommend the beefeater julienne salad with their celery seed dressing, the open face hot roast beef or their prime rib if they have it. I started with the Baked french onion soup au gratin, a bit saltier than I would've liked but still overall I enjoyed it. The melted cheese was perfect and the onion flavor of the soup was good. I've been recommended the Beef on "wick" by a few people, so I got that with a side of hot German potato salad and cole slaw. The sandwich was good, came with 2 slices of pickles. It's definitely for show since they stack the meat more into the center so the cut looks big, but that's ok, it was still a good bite of roast beef. The hot German potato salad was my first time having that, and it was not what I was expecting. There was a tangy flavor along with the potato and bacon, couldn't figure out what it was, but I liked it. Cole slaw was also pretty good, not too much I can say about that.
