Had a walking tour earlier in the day and when we passed here the guide mentioned it was a great find. I was on my own for dinner so decided to try it. What a gem! I walked in without reservation and sat upstairs. Service was friendly and attentive. I had bread service, the escargot, and an amazing salad with figs and goat cheese toasts. France in Wien. We loved our late lunch here. Highly recommended. Note: there are 3 seating areas: 1. Tables in the passageway which are not fancy and the temperature is very much a function of the weather outside. 2. Tables inside on the lower level. Again, not fancy. 3. Tables on the upper level with tablecloths. Much fancier. But, every table seems to reserved all day long. (Who eats lunch at 1600?) We were lucky and got a table for 1.5 hours between 2 reservations. Aperitifs - Lillet Blanc and Pinaeu des Charents. White wine - Entre deux Mers. Fruity, but with decent acidity. Good compliment to the food. Onion soup - classic. Mussels in white wine sauce. A HUGE portion. The mussels were the perfect size. A delicious dish. Dessert - Molleux au Chocolat. This afternoon I decided to take my husband out for an early birthday lunch in the fancy French bistro Beaulieu, located in the elegant Ferstel Passage. We took the U3 metro to Herrengasse, and walked passed Cafe Central to arrive at Ferstel Passage -- and in there is Beaulieu cafe. As you walk in you can see displays of French wines, drinks, snacks and jams to purchase. But in front of you is a display of french baguette sandwiches, cheeses, meats, and desserts, all of which look so freakin' delicious to me. Beaulieu is very popular and busy cafe, so come and see if you can fit yourself in here. The tables on the ground floor are only small enough for two people, but upstairs there are bigger tables for groups. The floors underneath are tiled with geometrically shaped flowers, the walls are decorated in simple fashion, and upstairs vintage bird cages hang from the ceiling. For drinks I wanted to try something different and unusual so I ordered their warm Orange-Lavender lemonade. I know lavender is a popular herb in France, so why not give it a try? The drink arrived in a large teapot for me to enjoy several servings of and tasted absolutely delicious! For lunch my husband ordered their quiche and I their Salade Chevre Chaud, a salad with greens and baby spinach, baked goat cheese with honey and thyme, sun dried tomatoes and three pieces of crunchy baguette. It was so good and for it's French portion size (a.k.a. small) I could have eaten another one, but I guess that allowed me room to fit in dessert! Beaulieu's Tarte Ganache was heavenly with a buttery crust, thick chocolate and raspberry filling garnished with a raspberry, candy piece and a tiny piece of gold (yes, you read that right, GOLD). So I will definitely be back. Maybe I will stop by for their Sunday brunch... oh, and every Monday they display their ever-changing lunch menu on their website and Facebook. read more

Very strange location but if you would like to wander around in the city this is a great spot. It's a French foodies paradise. Typical little café feel a little bit crowded but the food was very very good and the winds excellent. Wait staff very helpful, perfect English. Food presentation was over the top. They do have a beautiful deli section for takeout gourmet foods. I would highly recommend this place if you want to switch from Viennese cuisine. I mean... its ok. Not really sure why most of the yelp reviewers are going gaga over this place. Yes, the venue if you sit on the "outside" is one of the nicest covered halls of Vienna, very Brussels like, but you have to be tolerant for smokers sitting next to you who are not worried when smoke bombs invade your table via theirs. Inside is not so special. The gin tonics prices are in the double digit range, there is escargot and other French options but honestly I would not say its the best I have had. Not the worst, but the mussels needed better wine for marinade (would almost seem ours were cooked in water), more herbs, basically more everything, it was some of the least tasty mussels I have ever had in my life. While the service is decent, all of the staff except one that I ever spoke to does not speak French. For a place that seems to advertise themselves as the true French sanctuary of Vienna, this raises some questions. Moreover the prices for the "French" items in their market section of the front is highway robbery. Think twice the price for creme de casis and pastis, both of same quality one can find in Spar. At least sell to me something for twice the price only if I cannot easily find it elsewhere here, otherwise its just insulting. Overall: meh. read more

What i wonderful little French cafe/restaurant, i can not believe i walked past this place so many times and never stopped here before. The service is outstanding. The food is incredible. The wine selection is top notch. Simply put this is a wonderful little place to visit, not only is it very nice to be in this environment, but everything about it is great, including the price which was cheaper than i expected for the service you get, which is outstanding as i already wrote. They have also a very wide range of French products, which all seem to be at the highest quality. In short YOU MUST GO HERE at least once i your life. I really wanted to love this place, based upon the reviews. I ordered a beef filet in a port wine sauce, while my husband (having had a large lunch) only ordered onion soup. I asked for my beef to be medium rare. When it arrived, it was much more rare than medium rare--like it was blood red throughout most of the interior portion. In addition, it was a pretty fatty piece of meat and not particularly tender. The au gratin potatoes it came with were just okay. When our waiter (who was great--I do not fault service here at all) noticed I hadn't eaten 80% of my plate asked how it was, I told him it was underdone. He did offer to have it cooked more, but I declined--hoping to at least salvage the evening by taking home a yummy pastry (which I did--the Saint Honore I think it was called). In the states waitstaff might comp you something (if you did not care for your meal), but that was sadly not the case here. Not sure I would return for anything other than take-out pastry, which is delicious. read more

I lived in Vienna for over 3 years and this was hands down my favorite restaurant in Vienna, and one of my favorites of all time. Every single course I have ever had has been amazing and is well worth its price. This is food of the same quality that you would get at a michelin rated restaurant but without the pretentious garbage and exorbitant prices. Simple ingredients yet prepared exceptionally well, every single time. They change the menu once every couple of months which made me upset, but whatever they changed somehow managed to be even better than what they had before. They do lamb exceptionally well here, so I would always suggest getting the lamb if they have it. All of the food is noticeably fresh, extremely well cooked and tasty because it's perfectly seasoned with quality ingredients- not because it's drenched in fat. I have always either gotten the salads, appetizers, or main courses. If you are coming here once, get a main course. Really, the most expensive thing you can get is like 30 euros, and it is worth every single penny. Don't come here to be cheap, come here to actually enjoy exceptionally well made food. While the lunch menu is always delicious, I feel like everyone who is reviewing and saying to come here only for the lunch menu because it's cheaper has probably never had those main courses. The lunch menu is delicious, the dinner is extraordinary. If you are coming here only once, get the Saint Honore for dessert. You will not regret it. I've had their other desserts, but I am not partial to their macaroons, and am always wishing I got the saint honore instead. It is just everything a dessert should be. The Ambience is very french. For this reason, if you are looking for a crazy night out with your bros, I don't really think this would be the place. It's just a nice quiet quaint place that feels as authentic french as it gets. It's in the freyung passage, which is just by itself absolutely gorgeous. Plus it has a little shop with wines and cheeses and other yummy things to bring home which just makes it even cuter. You will absolutely never feel rushed here. I have stayed here for 4 hours eating and relaxing and never felt like I was pressured to leave, even when they have been crazy busy. Which they are most nights (make reservations!). The service is very good, but laid back. They will not really come up to you unless signaled when you are eating and after they have taken your plate away. I kind of like it this way, but some people want their waiters asking them once every 5 minutes if they would like something else. I like to eat in peace. After going there maybe a little tiny bit too often, most of the waiters knew me and were exceptionally nice to me. It got the point where they remembered what wines I had the last time that I was there, what I ordered regularly, etc. Also this is one of the few Viennese restaurants where they do not care what language you speak to them in. They never tried to respond to me in German if I spoke to them in English (which sounds ridiculous, but happens regularly in Vienna because of their absolutely terrible customer service standards) and they never were obviously annoyed that I was not speaking to them in German (again, happens all the time in Vienna). I know some people are complaining of the prices but this is where you go to get quality food, not cheap food. You absolutely get what you pay for here, and again, I do not think that any of their food is overpriced. If anything, it is underpriced. I've seen (and tasted) some of the same types of food (perfectly cooked lamb, mouth watering seared scallops) at michelin star restaurants, and this is right on par with them. But you pay 25 euros instead of 50. And when you do get an entree like that, that is all you need, that one entree to be full. I have never been able to get both an appetizer and a main course here. I stuff the saint honore in my belly after the main course because I would rather be in a food coma for the next 4 hours then not have the saint honore. Have I mentioned how good the saint honore is? Really this is the closest I have gotten to restaurant bliss. I can do nothing but highly recommend it. read more

Cafe makes good impression at the entrance, one expects a nice food and service. However this was not quite the case for us. The food wasn't to the expected extend. The soup for my friend was served overheated, the way it was absolutely impossible even to try it. On our complaint to the waiter we received unfriendly comment that the warmer the soup the better it is .... rather strange statement. I ordered bread with warm sardines and after a mix plate of various french cheese and meat.... all was ok. But not more than ok..... Probably we had a bad luck with this cafe, but definitely no intention to try it again. Do not recommend! read more

We stumbled upon this little gem just walking around late at night. It was still open as everything else around it was closing up for the night and it was packed with locals. We found a table outside. The friendly waitress recommended the lemon tart so that's what we had. It was a good choice; moist, not too sweet, and just the right amount of lemony taste for me. We also had coffee and the house wine with it. The price was average for the city. Excellent customer service, cozy atmosphere, good selection of food and wine, nice location in an old palace. Beaulieu has a lovely location in a passageway. It has good ambience inside and outside (although the courtyard was a bit deserted, but sitting "outside" within the passageway was pleasant). The wines by the glass seemed to be some high quality wines - we tried the syrah and the sancerre and weren't disappointed. We had the ratatouille, which was perfectly seasoned, and the baguette beaulieu - with olive tapenage, goat cheese, and pickled tomatoes - it was a little heavy on the goat cheese and light on everything else. Contrary to other reviewers, I found the service to be friendly and fairly punctual. All in all, it was a good experience. read more

A wonderful French place, casual bistrot fare, elegant execution. The staff is gentle and helpful. The people behind the counter might want to lower their expectations with regard to the customer's French fluidity. If one speaks fluent German and English, that should be sufficient at a shop in Vienna for a successful shopping experience. read more

Had a lovely dinner in a party of five here, thanks to recommendations from a Viennese friend and Yelp. My dining companions had all been in Wien for at least one full day prior to our dinner and said this was their best meal do far on the trip. The sardine appetizer and the lamb, which were my orders, were absolutely delicious; my friends also heartily enjoyed the mussels mariniere and the croque mademoiselle. This gem is tucked away in the heart of Vienna and I highly recommend it. Our waiter was very nice and the staff were helpful given that we were a larger than average group. read more

Been here twice! Nice staff! To go treats are cheaper than eating them there! Lemon was a little too lemony. The strawberry tart was great but tiny. The food is simple yet tasty. Classic French salad was okay..not worth 11 euros. But go for the lunch combos and you will have a better outcome! read more

so this place can seem like a complete tourist trap but once seated inside, there's regulars that come in for coffee and sweets. the food is very homemade, simple dishes, which is exactly what we were looking for. yelp really came through on this one. i was getting a bit tired of all the viennese food! read more
