After living in our home for over 22 years, our bathrooms were in sore need of remodeling. We finally decided to take the plunge, since we felt that costs will likely only get higher the longer we wait. We got 3 estimates. One company was higher priced, and another was in the same ballpark as Bear. We know there are cheaper alternatives, but you get what you pay for, and we wanted a place we could trust. We decided on Bear after meeting the project manager, Joel. He inspires confidence as he really knows what he's talking about, has a warm, easy-going personality, and we felt he really listened to our needs and desires. Joel's responsiveness and passion for his work were the main reasons we chose Bear, along with their overwhelmingly great customer reviews on Yelp. After our permit was approved, they started on the exact date promised. Prior to the start date, I received a lot of guidance on exactly what and how much materials we needed to purchase. They required all the materials to be ready for pickup and/or delivered before starting, to avoid any delays. I'm a graphic designer, so I have a good idea of how I want things to look. I had in mind to create a tranquil look like a luxury spa, but using simple materials. Joel and the consultant at the kitchen and bath supply store made some suggestions to help make the bathrooms look bigger since they are on the small side. Their advice was spot on. Both bathroom remodels were completed in exactly 3 weeks time as promised, aside from a few minor touch-ups and waiting for the glass shower door fabrication, which were installed 4 weeks after the start date. Joel and Joseph, the foreman, really kept things moving like a well-oiled machine. All of this was done in the midst of Joel and his wife having their first baby! At one point, the project looked like it was going to be stalled after the city inspector came in the morning for the rough wall inspection, which we passed. The next available appointment for the wet wall (waterproofing) would've been 2 weeks later. Joseph asked the inspector what could be done to speed it up, and was told the inspector could come by in 2-3 hours at the end of his shift to check whatever they could get done by then. Joel rushed over to help the crew of 4 and they completed a full day's work in that short span. We passed the inspection that afternoon and the rest of the project proceeded as scheduled. Like many remodeling projects, there were a few challenges that arose after opening up the walls, but nothing that slowed them down or added too much difficulty. While we did not move any plumbing or walls, the bathrooms were gutted from floor to ceiling. We had everything newly built/installed: tile, tub, shower, toilets, custom-built floating vanities, countertops, fixtures, floating shelves, recessed medicine cabinets, vanity lights, recessed ceiling lights, and a lighted LED mirror. We are blown away by the results. It is amazing how much more spacious the rooms appear, and what used to be eyesores have transformed into soothing retreat spaces, just like we had dreamed of. read more

Very disappointed in this company as I really wanted to work with them and loved the person who came out to look at the place but they did not communicate with us after seeing our remodel. All of the other companies got back to us within a week but we held everyone up over three weeks waiting for them to give us a quote. Still no quote and not even messages checking in or progress reporting. Long list of positives! Will recommend to anyone! Had the pleasure of working with Ben and Idan. Let's start with money- the price was fair and you pay after the completion of each phase, which, after hearing about other horror stories of contractors asking for money and vanishing, was a big relief. The guys were on top of everything in terms of deadlines and materials. They asked for my input and were happy to fill in the gaps or give suggestions as needed. We even took a field trip to the warehouse to choose things and place our orders. It was overwhelming and they provided me with a very hands-on approach, while giving me space to make the choices I would be happy with. We asked for certain things to be included in a very small space and they worked really mindfully to deliver it all. The working crew was AMAZING! Super respectful of the property and our space. They were early on site, worked all day, and finished the job quickly. They worked with PT cables (post tension cables), which was the scariest part to begin with. We are Alice & Tom Kramer. We first requested 3 quotes for our kitchen remodel project. After careful consideration of cost, quality and experience we decided to go with Bear Remodeling. Maya was assigned as our Project Manager. Maya was detailed and very experienced with their companies resources. The plan was completely accurate to our desires. The timeline was 3 to 4 weeks scheduled for completion. She explained all the steps to meet our expectations. Details included removal of cabinets, replacement of old 1960's wiring, and plumbing. In addition, new lighting and construction of additional pantry cabinets along with new quartz countertops was include. We added new Induction Oven and Range with a new Microwave Oven with built in vent. The construction crew was very experienced with high quality work. We vetted several contractors before choosing Bear for a recent bathroom remodel. To be honest, I don't remember exactly why we selected Bear, but I'm glad we did. Victor and his crew did an outstanding job and, furthermore, were a delight to work with. I went into the project with high expectations, and those expectations were not only met, but exceeded. The job itself went as smoothly as could be expected. Unless they were knocking down a wall or something of the sort, we would be nearly unaware that the crew was in the house. Whenever an issue arose, as they always do with these kinds of projects, Victor and his team handled them deftly and with aplomb. Any concerns I had about anything were immediately and satisfactorily addressed. The workmanship was fantastic. For instance, owing to the City of Alameda's lucrative permitting racket, we were obligated to do some needless rewiring. This necessitated sawing a 2' by 2' hole in our bedroom wall. Derrick, the foreman, told me ahead of time that they would do the best job that they could patching the hole back up, but that it "wouldn't be 100%. Probably more like 85%." Well, the finished job is a lot closer to 100% than it is to 85%. If you know where to look and the light is hitting it just right you can faintly detect it; otherwise, forget about it. Similarly, a hole they patched in the bathroom where a recessed toilet paper holder used to be is 100% undetectable. As far as everything else goes, I believe the attached photo speaks for itself. (I could attach a picture of what the bathroom looked like before, but that would be far too embarrassing.) The space is a bit cramped, so it's difficult to get an all-encompassing shot, but I think it gives a decent idea of the success of the project. My only problem with our new bathroom is that it makes the rest of the house look like something of a turd. I have a feeling Bear is going to be back several times over the next few years bringing the rest of the house up to par with the bathroom. read more

I wish I had a better review to provide but I know people review Yelp to get recommendations, especially large purchases as a remodel. I met with the Bear Project Manager in early March and reviewed my project needs (stair railing and kitchen remodel). Things went great, he met my price budget, met me at the Kitchen store to pick out items and I was feeling pretty good. Things took a bit of a turn when we asked to see a price breakdown of the Statement of Work. Not to price shop, because in full transparency, we had planned to go with this company but wanted to see how they come up with their pricing (e.g - design, labor, etc). I thought this was a fair request. Since then the Project Manager has not responded to multiple texts messages or email. Either they are too busy for additional work or they don't want to provide the breakdown. Either way, this is not a solid start to a working relationship and if I can't even get responses now, how I can I be reassured they will be around during the project? We will be moving to a different remodel company now. read more

I don't understand the positive reviews as my experience with Bear Remodeling was dismal. Their response to do a bid was slow, it was light on details, missed several asks that I wanted, and when I questioned the bid of $24K, they said oops that's a typo it should be $14K. Based on the scope of work I requested, I thought that bid was outrageous and I ended up getting the work done for $4K - - and the work was done perfectly by a different contractor. That was just for the first phase of my kitchen remodel and I ended up sticking with my contractor for the entire job. Maybe they were super busy but still no excuse for dismal customer service. I would not trust them to deliver a pizza to my house let alone a remodeling job. Sorry guys - I hate writing these reviews. read more

We hired BEAR to remodel a second floor bathroom in our recently purchased townhouse. It was a complex job as demolition was required to remove two closets to enlarge the floor space and gut the 40 year old bathroom (So bad!). As such, the plumbing and electrical needed to be altered. As well, the attic access had to be relocated and a celiing fan installed through the roof to bring it to code. BEAR delivered with quality workmanship and I just love what I call my 'Room with a Bath'. I would highly recommend hiring this group of skilled, reputable and hard working guys.
