I would have given this place 4 or even 5 stars before today, but I think Yelpers deserve to be warned that THIS PLACE HAS RELAXED ALL COVID PREVENTION PROTOCOLS. I was shocked to find myself ordering coffee this morning surrounded by unmasked people not social distancing at all. The barristas were great and masked up, but the management should be ashamed to be putting the health of their employees at risk. The unmasked were everywhere, but particularly huddled around a makeshift art display completely without masks. Whenever I am in Rochester I grab coffee at either Bean & Leaf or Dessert Oasis. Today I went with Bean & Leaf since I had a baby in tow and it was easier to get in and out of. The coffee is always good, not the greatest, but definitely very good. I appreciate the variety of alternative milks they offer and today I was pleasantly surprised to see a vegan mixed berry bar in the display case. It was super yummy and not dry at all, although very hard to eat with a plastic fork because of how dense it was. I like this cafe a bit more than Desert Oasis, mostly because B&L has bigger variety of cheaper drinks and is all-around a little less chaotic. Alongside a plethora of teas in-the-kettle and coffee, they also have some sweets and the occasional slice of cake. I haven't tried their coffee but I've heard from friends that it's just ok. Their iced thai tea and hot teas are great, though. I've been here for dates, meetings with friends, and an interview. It's never too noisy or busy here and has a lot of seating, yet still retains a local, warm energy. I had some excellent chamomile/lavender tea at this cute little family-owned coffee and tea shop in Rochester. The owners could not have been nicer, the tea better, or the patrons more friendly. They closed a little too early, at 7:00 on a Sunday evening, but apparently, Rochester closes early, so there is not enough business to warrant staying open later on a Sunday night. I will definitely be back when I am in the Rochester area, or anywhere close by. The owners even told me where I could get the tea I had, so I could have it at home. I had not been to Rochester in decades, but downtown Rochester has a great feel and much more to offer than some other smaller towns in Oakland County. I met someone here after work just for a cup of tea and they have a great selection of different teas. I was looking for a decaffeinated and they had quite a selection of those too so I was very happy. I got the berry berry herbal tea and I asked for a small pot but since they were out they ended up giving me a large pot for the price of the small which was quite a bit of tea in it. Decent, middle of the road coffee house that could be great if the staff put a little more effort into making drinks. Terrific location and decent Wi-Fi, but a little lacking when it comes to barista skills. I didn't care for the chai tea too much at all, which is a shame because I do like a chai tea every now and then. It was definitely not the best chai tea I've ever had. Was it horrible? Not at all. Was it how chai should taste? Not quite. The basic roasted coffee is quite good, though, so if all else fails, you can always count on a great cup of standard black coffee. Had the cocoa once and it was pretty decent, but not knock my socks off good. It could have used a little more chocolate in it. Don't get me wrong- I do like Bean & Leaf, I just think they have a little bit of room for improvement. The staff is friendly, but there isn't a lot of consistency in their drink standards. Alright, confession time... I'm a tea snob. Few coffee and tea places around here really impress me like Bean and Leaf. It's not just the flavor of the tea that draws me here--it's the amazing selection of tea. Never before have I seen a tea called "gunpowder," nor would I have imagined that ginger and jasmine would taste amazing together. The tea here is phenomenal, and I really wish I could say the same about their coffee. I once tried a seasonal latte here, but I couldn't taste any distinguishing flavor other than plain old coffee. Nothing spectacular like I was hoping. I was also disappointed in the fact that Bean and Leaf doesn't make any of their coffee drinks frozen. Only hot or iced. But I'm not too upset because I come here for the tea. My favorite drink here is the iced ginger jasmine tea; it's one of the most refreshing iced teas I've had. The ginger gives the tea a bit of "heat" to the back of your throat while the icy concoction of jasmine flowers and honey cools and refreshes. It's so great on a hot summer day. I'd definitely recommend Bean and Leaf Cafe to anyone who loves tea and a good, relaxing studying atmosphere. This place is great! The staff is always nice and quick even when there is a rush of people during their peak hours. I have probably never waited more than 5-7 minutes to receive my order. The atmosphere is very calm and the various board games that they provide are always fun to play and reminisce about my childhood. The only thing I wish were better about Bean & Leaf is that there were more seating options available. I often find that people sometimes struggle in finding someplace to sit and enjoy their drinks and have to wait for someone to get up and leave. However, this does not takeaway from their great quality of services and choices of drinks. I would recommend this place to get work done or study! read more

9pm... what a perfect time to get coffee. In choosing where to get coffee, I opted for Bean & Leaf over what I've been getting a little too often recently -- Starbucks. What a great little place in Downtown Rochester, and a nice alternative to a just about equally pleasant coffee shop a short walk away, Dessert Oasis. I got myself the Dirty Irish Chai, I believe it was called... it's a seasonal drink that absolutely needs to be tried. Shit, is it good. It's Irish cream, a couple shots of espresso, and chai tea. Very slightly too sweet for me personally, but I tend to prefer black coffee and unsweetened tea, so take that for what it is. Regardless, delicious. The look of the place is really simple but nice and laid back. Their new menu board (different from the Yelp pictures) is helpful, as it shows what's in what you order and how much. It's also worth noting they offer a few small, erm, edibles, such as muffins, croissants, and chips. A small menu with a ton of customizable coffee and tea options, I'll likely be back here when I'm wandering around Rochester in dire need of caffeine. read more

It's just a tea bag and hot water for over three dollars, so it's a bit overpriced. I may go back again to try their latte. If the traffic flow is a key indicator, Bean & Leaf Cafe is a tremendous hit in the area. I went in one day and got a dirty chai and was SOLD. I've never had one anywhere before or since so they get an A for creativity on many levels from my perusal of their menu. As others have commented the consistency is definitely hit or miss. I am now a regular since my daughter is in town for lessons 2x a week and I hang around. Great people watching and some lovely desserts by the looks. I haven't tried them. I was recently introduced to bean in leaf early last month to try their tea and have since become a regular customer. The atmosphere is very different than that of a Starbucks or a Caribou, the loud kids and jerks on their cell phones are distinctly lacking in this place and the feel of the place is well thought out with the local artists displays on the wall and books on the shelves for customer to read. The people who work there are particularly nice but not in your fake customer service way, but generally good people. I went in there recently when I had a pretty bad cough to pick up a tea pot and some tea. Andrew jumped into action and got me a yellow and blue tea with honey, ginger, and lemon which really hit the spot, all because he thought it would make me feel better. Both Sarah and Stacey have been a pleasure to talk to talk with and are very knowledgeable about teas. And the other patrons seem more open and pleasant which is refreshing in Rochester. The product it self has always been what I expected if not better. The place makes it fun and easy to try new and different things for a tea novice like my self. I truly hope this place sticks around for a while to come. It's a nice alternative to Caribou and Starbucks with a lot of different benefits that the chains can't offer. read more

I'm a Graphic Designer working remotely, and this has been my office for the past year. And I love my office, and "co-workers." Coffee can certainly be done better, but it's still good. For my money, a location needs a mix of good music, good people and more than just soy milk. Bean & Leaf has all of the above. Of course, being that the overhead music is dictated by the employee currently working, you can get some odd mixes. But it's better than feeling like you're stuck in a Nordtsrom elevator. Besides, most of the employees have a playlist that won't make you want to flip a table. Try the cranberry apricot scone. Try the Vietnamese coffee. Try the club chairs by the bookshelf. I think this is as good as it gets for suburban Detroit. I spent a summer at home in Rochester, studying for a really big test, and literally spent every afternoon here for a month. I couldn't have gotten through the grind without these guys. The number of teas offered is absolutely phenomenal. I'm impressed by their Thai Iced Tea, Red Tea Lattes (always add caramel), and flavored Iced Black Teas (which I strongly recommend adding some peach puree to). It's just a great selection of tea, brewed well, and made to order. All you have to do is know how to order (which, can take time to develop). Overall, great beverages, great service, great ambiance. So way back when Starbucks closed up a bunch of stores, this location was hit, and that was sad because downtown Rochester needs a good coffee shop. So thanks to the owners who opened the Bean & Leaf! When I'm home in Rochester, which has been most of this month, I go here to work. I drink several coffee's, maybe a few food products, and use the WiFi. It's a stimulating enough environment, making me feel just a tiny bit at least, that I'm back in my place of residence, NYC! (Except that street parking outside the B & L is .25 per hour, and city parking a few feet away is FREE!) The coffee here is very good. Of course there are so many varieties of coffee drinks, but here I have tried only the regular coffee, and the mocha latte, which is one of my usual orders elsewhere. I'm less enthusiastic about the mocha here at the B&L - too sweet, and the chocolate doesn't seem high-quality or something. But the regular coffee (and thus iced varieties) is really good; it's not super bitter, but bitter enough. As far as service, it's always been good for me. I've set there for hours this month now, so I've observed one or two situations in which the customer thought the person behind the counter was ignoring them and talking to a friend who had come in. And in fact, the worker was talking to the friend, but she was still working on the drink too. So I see both sides of that - it didn't really delay service, but in the mind of the customer it did. One other time just one person was working the shift and she literally got slammed, so the line backed up. At any rate, for the most part service will be very good, so don't let that keep you away! I recently started working at Commonwealth in downtown Birmingham and have become addicted to our coffee, but as a Rochester resident it's a bit of a drive on my days off. Bean and Leaf is the perfect substitute. Both their tea and coffee are good- I usually ask my barista for suggestions and have yet to be disappointed. If you like chai lattes - I would suggest theirs over Starbucks or Caribou. It's just enough sweetness and I add espresso if I need to kickstart my day. Their Italian soda is good when you want something light, fizzy and refreshing. Staff is awesome, internet is free and the location is great. read more

Okay so I am not a fan of coffee but as the name has leaf in it, I thought I would try the tea. After having had numerous types of tea, I have to say the tea tastes just like a Leaf. Or better yet I say it has no taste. My companion is a coffee aficionado and he says the coffee there is at best mediocre. We go there for the atmosphere mainly. However, they could use a few more comfy chairs. Also, do not try ordering one of their breakfast sandwiches, you will wait forever. I have done this at least three times and each time my companion has finished his coffee before the sandwich has even arrived. The last time, we were both done and the sandwich was not even started. Like I said we like the atmosphere and the fact that it is not a major chain, but it does need some improvement. And until that happens, we will probably just go to Starbucks. The tea there is about as good but the coffee is much better. read more

The tea selection here is great. I love the ambiance, the staff is really friendly and it's always a nice place to go and read a book or chat with your friends while enjoying a hot cup of tea.
