There is a group of older gentleman who like to hang out each morning, discussing the news of the day. Nice selection and location, convieniently located on main street a block from our hotel so the first stop the next morning was here. They open at 3.30 am, I was tempted to stay up till then just to get first dibs, we made it there at 9 and they had about half the selection left. I finally made my way over to Knapp's donut shop this past weekend! I have always heard good things, but never made the effort to go. I went in the afternoon, so I obviously didn't get the early morning, fresh selection, but they still had enough options to satisfy my sweet tooth. I mostly went to have an apple fritter, so I called ahead to make sure they had some - the woman on the phone said they only had the small ones, and if I wanted to place an order for the next morning, which I declined as I wanted to get a donut that day. When I went into the shop, it is definitely a mom and pop style store. There were a few other patrons sitting at the table top bar, mostly speaking with the lady behind the counter (possibly the owner or manager). I got a few donuts - the "small" apple fritters (they were not small and to me seemed regular size), the cream filled donut, sour cream glazed, and a cheese danish. ALL of the donuts were absolutely delicious as I tried a few tastes of each one. The apple fritter was the star of the show; I saved it to go home and warm in up for a few seconds in the microwave, which made it even more delicious. It had a crunchy, sugary coating and just the right amount of spices and apple throughout the pastry. I definitely would return to Knapp's Donut Shop, and next time I will be sure to go earlier in the day to see the full selection. read more

Knapp's looks like a donut shop from a 70s cop-chase movie. They're a small donut bakery (just opened a second location!) with amazing skills. I've tried all their donuts, and every single one is fantastic. If I had to suggest a few of them, I'd say try the apple fritter, the cinnamon swirl, and any of the jelly-filled. They have a small bar set-up facing the bakery and another facing the windows. It's amazingly comfortable. I ended up here on weekends just to grab coffee and a donut so I could go over the paper (yes, young people read the paper sometimes). There seems to be a group of older regulars that are always looking for opportunities to chat. They definitely have interesting stories - not that I can explicitly remember any of them, but the fragments add to fond memories of this place. There's nothing really special about this place to me. We got a half dozen - mainly Boston cremes and Vanilla cream filled. The custard tasted like something that came from a Jell-O box, which is far from a compliment. There really was nothing homemade about it, which is what I'm hoping from a hole in the wall place such as this. The other donuts too, were nothing to write home about. The service too, left much to be desired. The person that was serving us kept egging us on to pick our donuts when we suggested her to take on the next customer. Rather, she just gave her a bad vibe and stared us down until we were ready. When we did put in our order and paid for our donuts, she didn't even bother to hand us our donuts. We had to get through a number of people near the register and pick up our box because she neglected to hand it over to us. The atmosphere is like any other mom and pop donut shop - slightly dilapidated, but clean and with ample seating along the counter and facing the window, where you can witness the busy intersection of Downtown Rochester. I definitely appreciate an excellent donut and Knapp's delivers; in fact, I can't get them off my mind. They have an awesome variety of flavors but even cooler, of textures. Thus far I've taken down the double chocolate, chocolate honey dip, maple glazed, maple cake, and my favorite sour cream. Double chocolate has a nice crispy outside and dense middle, chocolate honey dip is softer on the outside but with a crunch from the ground nuts on top, maple glazed is soft on the outside and dense in the middle, maple cake is light and fluffy, and sour cream is almost crusty on the outside and a very dense, almost coffee cake like crumb texture in the middle. Each one incredible in its own way. In my young life full of many encounters with fried dough, I can proudly say that the perfect donut it Knapp's Sour Cream. Set your alarm to get there before 5, get a fresh sour cream, feel love that only the ultimate donut can provide, and repeat. read more

This is my favorite Knapp's Donut shops of all their locations. I first ate here in 2002. It's family-owned and it always feels like "home." It's the place where "everybody knows your name." I like meeting my friends here for coffee talk as often as I can. The view of downtown Rochester is like no other from Knapp's wonderful picture window. This may sound weird, but the donuts are really sweet. Really, really sweet. Painfully sweet. Beware. Also, the customers in this area are generally really self-absorbed and pushy. Go early to avoid the jerkoffs, but don't go *too* early. If you go within about an hour of them opening, the shelves can be pretty bare and the donuts taste like they sat on the shelf overnight. read more
