My family has been coming to Yates for 40 years, so I might be a little biased, but I think it's pretty great! Partly, you just have to know what to expect and when to go. This is not an orchard - there is no apple picking, hay rides or pumpkin patches. You primarily come to walk or bike the trails along the Clinton River and enjoy their famous cider and donuts. Over the years they've added other offerings like an ice cream stand, fudge kitchen, etc. so there's plenty to choose from. Lots of picnic tables outside but during peak times, it's hard to find a spot. In some of my past visits, there were a lot of bees but this time (Sept 2026), I didn't notice any. This cider mill has gotten so popular over the years that it's way too insane to go on weekends. If you can go earlier on a weekday, it's much more enjoyable. They're the oldest cider mill in Michigan, have a rich 160-year history, and still use the water turbine to generate power! But more than that, their donuts and cider are top notch. The donuts are light, fluffy, and not too sweet - just perfection. Their cider pairs nicely but I will say it's a little expensive (overpriced imho). Parking is free and there's an overflow lot across the street. When I lived in Georgia, they didn't have the same style of cider mills as we do here in Michigan, so we are very lucky! This Sweet Business is Located at 1950 E. Avon Rd. near 23 Mile Rd and Dequindre. It is My monthly stop after visiting My Parents at the cemetery on Hamlin Nearby Yates Cider off Dequindre. Yates is celebrating 163 Years of Fresh Made Cider from Apples grown on the property and nearby to be Mashed in their pressing Machine located inside this sweet business. Naturally they close for the winter but open the first week of May till after Halloween. Stop in to see the farm animals for kids, play area and plenty of picnic tables to sit and enjoy a glass of cider and their famous plain or cinnamon sugar donut. ( Photos attached) The past 3 times when I have stopped to shop the donuts have been freshly baked and warm to enjoy before I drive home with a Gallon of cider and 4 other donuts cuz I always eat 2 there with a couple swigs of cider. There's walking trails near the water so pack your hiking or walking tennis shoes for us ladies in flip flops or sandals. Pets are welcome on leash. Inside the business is their clean and stocked store with Homemade Donuts of Cinnamon, Plain & Powdered, Apple Fritters on Friday, Jams, Jellies, Pocket Pies, Cookies and also Sparkling Cider in the Fall. Again, I'm sorry because my phone lost a couple years worth of photos so I cannot add them, but I have to tell you the donuts here, the cinnamon sugar, were literally some of the best donuts I've had in my entire life. They were warm, even though we came at the very end of the evening, they tasted like they had just come out of the fryer. The cinnamon sugar was a perfect balance and these donuts just melt in your mouth. We also got an apple pie. My dad literally says this is the best pie he's ever had. I think if I would've had it with some ice cream and served it warm I would've felt the same way. This place is just adorable and I cannot say enough good things about their donuts. You can't go wrong with a hot donut from Yates Cider Mill. The donut is less sweet and more fluffy than others I have had. Might be the best cider donut I have had. The cider is also pretty good and the wax bag is a nice touch. The mill can be a hot spot for sure, and is best to stop by in the early morning on a weekday. Last time I stopped by they were just harvesting and crushing for fall, which was pretty fun to watch. The building and grounds are also pretty cool to explore and seem to be frozen in time. Serving great apple cider for over 150 years. Our family has been visiting Yates for 60 years! History The company started as a sawmill in 1863. The apple smashing began eleven years later. The huge building you enter today was constructed in 1894 when the business focused primarily on cider production. So many changes over the years...yet many things remain intact. Was Harry Yates responsible for starting the tradition of donuts and cider back in the 1930's? Today These days you'll be able to buy Frankenmuth Fudge, Zak & Mac's chocolates and Posey's hot dogs and snacks, all at Yates. They've also added a small petting farm. The list of Yates products has expanded well beyond just donuts. Today, we bought a 1/2 peck of our favourite apples, the honeycrisp, as well as Aged Bourbon syrup, applesauce, pickles, hard candy for the grandkids and even a cool sweatshirt. Cider prep Somewhere along the line they changed their processing to UV light treating which pretty much obliterates the mother at the bottom of the jug and has a definite effect on the overall taste. So to confirm our suspicions we bought a half gallon (with donuts, of course). We were right. Nature trails? There are three immediate trails ranging from 1 to 1-1/2 mile loops We spent an hour on their Railroad Trail a.k.a. The Yates Trail. A mile long walking loop. With plenty of colour. Nothing like a walk with nature. Parking has always been a challenge. There is an overflow across the road. Mostly it's just a matter of patience. Pro Tip: Try to come on a weekday morning. Weekends in the fall are filled with families. The staff was hurried but cordial, as usual. We've always found long lines here. So that's to be expected. We stopped by Yates on a thursday afternoon (4:30). There was a little traffic at the roundabout but once we got in, there was a ton of parking. I parked at the way front. I met up with my mom and sisters and niece. We found a cute picnic table and we did not see bees at that table. It was in the shade and fairly big. We ordered some cinnamon sugar donuts and cider. The donuts were hot and fresh. They were delicious. The cider was sweet and perfect. My sisters got iced cider and they said it was good too. My kids absolutely loved them. I have been visiting Yates for DECADES and It's one of my favorite fall destinations to date! I remember coming here as a little girl and swimming in the lakes, and even now as an adult who lives out of state I always try to make this a stop if I'm visiting my family! The fresh donuts are fresh, warm and delicious! Get more than you want, because you WILL want another one. The cider is really good and it's lovely that you can get a hot one, especially for the cooler days. There is a dirt trail about a mile long you can walk through. It's an easy, flat trek, beautiful in the fall, and you can go down to the water from multiple points. There's lots of people fishing in the lake, too. There's plenty of parking on either side of the street, each have their own lot. It's free, too. The staff has been great whenever I visit, and now they have a petting zoo and some small gift shops. Yates is my favorite cider mill in the Metro Detroit area. I love that there's a quick trail if you wanna walk down there with your warm cider and you can really take all the nature. Their donuts are soft and moist and obviously you need the ones coated in cinnamon sugar. My first cider mill. My wife grew up in Sterling Heights and always came to Yates during the season. She wanted to show me around, and of course wanted to relive many of her happy childhood memories. My daughter wasn't with us, so we surprised her with their pecan pumpkin butter. She did request some apples, but we did not think we would make it through TSA. We both had some of their delicious apple cider donuts and apple cider. I had it cold and my wife had hers hot. Yum! Totally have missed out on this since living in Florida, where instead of the roaring seasons, it is practically summer all year round. A fall staple! I find myself coming here at least once a year as soon as the leaves start to turn. I came on a Tuesday evening right after work (around 6pm) and it was not busy at all. There's definitely been times where I had to wait in line for a bit but service is very quick and friendly and the donuts and other sweet treats are definitely worth the wait. There's plenty of seating down by the water (it gets a little cold so bring a jacket!) and a nice walking path to take a little stroll with your goodies. Before we headed back to Houston, we had the pleasure of visiting my stepdad's old stomping grounds. He insisted we try the apple cider, which of course we did--along with a bunch of other things. We tasted the apple cider, frozen apple cider, apple crisp, and bread pudding. We definitely overdosed on sweets. I couldn't help but ask him, "Have you always been this obsessed with apple cider?" Went with a friend on a very busy Saturday and the weather was perfect, but despite that, the line to get cider and donuts moved steadily and the workers were quick. I haven't been to many cider mills but this was the best donuts and cider I've had thus far. The donuts were so fresh, crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. This was my first time at this particular cider mill and it was cute. They had Pony rides for the kids and a petting zoo where you can feed and pet the animals.
