    Sausage with pickled onion
    Robert R.

Ok, I'm torn. I really like Rockabilly Brewery and in the past we've sampled the food and it was pretty good. We stopped by today and a good thing was that BBQ Fiends is running out of a lot that they offer, good for them. I had the sausage and it's served with pickled onions and pickles. It was very tasty and I'd have it again. My wife ordered a couple of brisket tacos. A quarter of the serving was fat, ok so you're going to get that sometimes. Brisket with queso fresco and flower tortillas just didn't do it. The tortillas had a raw texture and there just wasn't any recognizable taste to the brisket. I'm afraid to say that living here in TX that brisket had no taste! We both tried just the meat without the tortilla...nothing. Service was great, everyone here is always welcoming and the fact you can sit outside with a beer and see the tree tops, wort

Absolutely fantastic. We cleaned the plates. I got 1/4lb of brisket. They asked about preferences. It was so good. So good. This is not just BBQ. These people ate fiends. What's better than that? They brew too and it is top shelf. I'd show you a picture but I ate it already. Pondering more. Would that be too much? Oh, and the staff really like working here and they are working. Great vibe. I have never had brisket this good. Not even close. How can that be? Oh, and the music was good!

GO! Before the Texas Monthly blows this place up beyond access!!! Chori-sausage; KILLER, brisket; moist, juicy, delicious, turkey; Smokey, salty, moist and delicious. Everything was wildly good. But the elote hands down stole the show, creamy, Smokey, savory, and surprising served with a slice of lime and a dusting of cotija and cilantro PHENOMENAL! The food came out quickly and the service was polite and on point. The vibes of the location are quaint and quiet. The rockabilly brewery offers a shady space with activities and space for all ages both furry and human.

This place is easy to miss, but it's a must try if you're in the area! We have had their food several times and each time it has been fantastic! Their homemade sides are what sets it apart from other bbq joints in the area. It's currently a food truck on a brewery property, but I'm hoping to see them in a brick & mortar store one day. The workers are friendly and the food comes out quickly. On our most recent visit my husband got a sandwich to go and the workers were kind enough to package everything separately so that the bread wouldn't get soggy. Such a small detail but really made all the difference in service! Definitely will be bringing any friends or family visiting to this spot!

They have great proportions of egg, cheese, bacon, chorizo, potatoes, and all that jazz. I think they have some of the best breakfast tacos I have had in town. I have had them a few times now. Yesterday, I went to Smokey Mo's for dinner because I wanted a baked potato desperately. I walked inside with only a few other people eating and no line. I ordered a chopped brisket baked potato with all the fixings, with an individual sized side of their pinto beans and a regular drink. They have plenty of drink options from bottled beverages, alcoholic beverages, and their Pepsi fountain drinks. They also have a section to serve yourself with pickles, onions, lemons, and peppers. It was only a few minutes before I got my meal, and the baked potato was excellent. I ate it as quickly as I could for recently having my wisdom teeth removed. It is a pretty large potato, and it was able to fill a hungry guy like myself up pretty well. The chopped brisket was plentiful and was quite savory. I missed brisket. As I finished my meal, I went to get a refill of my tea, and they had already removed the teas from their fountain drink area. There were still other customers inside besides me, and they were still open for another 40 minutes, so that was a little disappointing, but it did not really make or break the visit. I have not had their main barbecue, but it looks decent for being a seven days a week chain. That baked potato was delightful though. RIYL: A spuddo in Hutto.

What we got instead was a fistful of greasy fat with a few scraps of meat, slapped together like it didn't even matter. The bark? Nonexistent. Slices? Fiction. Flavor? Decent, yes--but it doesn't matter when the main event is a fat mound masquerading as brisket. This wasn't just a meal gone wrong; it ruined a rare, $100+ family gathering, turning what should have been warmth, laughter, and indulgence into awkward chewing and regret. Every bite screamed "cheap, careless, lazy," and every dollar spent felt like it vanished into smoke--literally. Smokey Mo's, your brisket is a betrayal in foil. If you want BBQ that actually honors your family gatherings, keep driving. Don't let anyone you love endure this!

I try to give places a chance before deciding they are not for me…read more When I first moved to Hutto, I was intrigued by Southside Market and their history. I had known about the historic location in Elgin that claims to be the oldest barbecue spot in Texas. They have updated their processes to keep up with the times and in the last 15 years have begun opening new locations throughout Central Texas, with one in the Co-Op District of Hutto. I have had plenty of barbecue in my time, from chains to Texas Monthly recognized and Michelin star winning locations. I understand that not all barbecue is the same, but I also understand that barbecue served all day like at Southside Market can still be good. I do not think that is truly the case, though. My first experience was when Southside Market catered a holiday party for my work. I thought it was alright, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt, saying that it was catered. You do not judge a meal based on it being kept warm in a pan that was probably cooked at 8 am that morning or the night prior. It is not the same game. I went back a few months later for a birthday lunch and got their combo plate with sausage and sliced brisket. My first thought: This tasted like it was catered. The Jalapeño Cheddar sausage was decent but tasted a little too smoky, and the brisket really did nothing for me. The side of potato salad was good, but you cannot mess up potato salad that badly. Their mac and cheese was good, I think. I do not remember it whatsoever. I went back recently after almost nine months with a desire to get a baked potato with chopped brisket for lunch. I got it without sour cream but kept the rest of the toppings of cheddar cheese, chives, and butter. I took it to go, which I rarely do, but it was a busy day. I cannot describe how disappointing the potato was. First, the potato was smaller than I had expected. The saucy chopped brisket tasted like a smoked Sloppy Joe thrown on a spud. It was really too smoky for me to even enjoy it. I felt like I was eating a chimney. It did nothing to raise my spirits and like that, I was forever out on Southside Market. I am probably one in a million because they have steady foot traffic inside on a frequent basis, but I wonder if the name is doing all the work. The staff was great and the space is well done and spacious, but the food actually has to be good to make that a plus factor. I have no idea if the food is any better at their original Elgin location, but I would rather go to Smokey Mo's across the tracks in Hutto because the potato is a good size and the brisket had a good flavor to it. Here, I just was not impressed. I will not ever return unless I am invited with co-workers or something, and even if I am, I will debate the idea of saying yes.

I only have pictures from our first visit, but the second time around I got the fried pork belly fried rice as my side to go with the pork ribs. The pork ribs are moist, tender, and fall-off-the-bone delicious! On my first visit, I got the potato salad as my side. It was okay, just not as flavorful as I personally like -- but everyone has their own preference when it comes to potato salad. I ended up adding a little extra seasoning to mine, which is why I decided to try a different side the second time around. The pork belly fried rice paired really well with the ribs! The BBQ sauce could use a little more flavor in my opinion, and the portion they give is pretty small, so I ended up adding some of my own sauce. But the pickled onions and pickles on the side? SO good. Especially the onions -- they had such a distinct flavor that I could honestly eat them by themselves. They reminded me of the pickled veggies you get on a bánh mì sandwich, just without being overly vinegary. Honestly, if they ever made a brisket bánh mì sandwich using those pickled onions and veggies, it would probably be amazing! My husband always gets the brisket sandwich and loves the onions and pickles with it too. The location is tucked away down a small, rough-looking road near some duplexes. Our first time coming, we almost turned around because we were in my husband's coupe, but the second visit we took my SUV instead. Don't let the road scare you away though -- the food is worth it. The staff was friendly and helpful both times we visited. The location is also super convenient for us since we live nearby. Definitely happy we found this spot!

First, let's talk about the location. It's tucked down a bumpy road between two duplex apartments. It sounds a little sketchy, but trust me, it is so worth it (definitely drive your truck or SUV if you have one!). This place is a true hidden gem. They have a dope setup with covered outdoor seating if you want to chill and eat there, but we ended up taking ours to go. Now, for the food. I ordered the 1 Meat Brisket Plate, which comes with a side, sauce, and pickles/pickled onions. Bro... that brisket was like butter. I know "tenderism" is trending all over social media right now, but this right here is the real deal!! It was so incredibly soft. For my side, I got the potato salad. To be honest, it was a little bland on its own, but it actually worked as a nice, solid base for me to hook it up my own way once I got home. Overall, Smoky Buns is a dope spot and easily hands-down the best BBQ in Central Texas!!!! I will absolutely be back.

The inside was vey inviting and tastefully decorated. We had the Beef Bulgogi Bao, this was really yummy. The bao was soft and delightful. The beef had a sweet bulgogi glaze that worked really well with it. The rest of the toppings added a nice balance without overpowering the meat. My only wish was that it was 4 baos and not two since they are so small. The highlight was the Firecracker Shrimp. Be warned this is not a spicy dish like you might think from the name. The crispy shrimp was crunchy and not soggy at all, it felt pretty clean and not greasy. It came with salad, rice and a spicy soy sauce and it was just so good. With 12 shrimp, it's definitely shareable between 2 people. Lastly we had the Vietnamese iced coffee which was $6. It tasted like Ovaltine and was mostly ice with just a few sips. I wouldn't recommend it unless the cup size is increased or the price is decreased. So overall, it's a bit pricey. The menu was also a little confusing. We checked online prior to coming and they had a lot of stuff but when at the restaurant, there were only a few items listed which caught us off guard. We actually ended up ordering the wrong item (firecracker shrimp when we actually wanted dynamite shrimp, ultimately it worked out cuz it was delicious but the problem still stands). So those are the only cons I can think off. Other than that, The place was fantastic. Did not think Hutto would have a place of this caliber. The bartender was friendly and they also had a bbq truck on site that smelled delicious but we didn't have time to check-out this time. The only negative I'd say is there is zero inside space with A/C, its all open air. It is a unifying meal of blue-collared and white-collared people alike. It is a food that unifies the vast cultures of the south. There is no debate when there is a Chicken Fried Steak. Soul food and southern food are so severely important to people who were raised in the south because the overall feeling of those cuisines is that it feels like their Grandma is cooking dinner. Now if you look at my Yelp profile picture for a fraction of a second and maybe stereotype a little, you can accurately assume that my Grandma's cooking would fit in the latter and you would maybe wonder if my grandmother knows what seasoning is. If you have had her chili, you would say no. The famous Texan Cafe & Pie Shop in Hutto is a classic Southern diner that is always a perfect pick-me-up meal and is a truest staple of the area. When I first visited Hutto before moving I looked for places to try, and the abundant and sheer quantity of reviews for Texan Cafe made it clear that I had to try it. That was just over a year ago, and I still remember parking my car in the lot across the street and walking into the cozy diner with wood chairs and booths, red tablecloths, and so much decor on the walls it might be a museum, and I felt right about moving to Hutto. I was seated immediately and almost instantly ordered the Chicken Fried Steak smothered with white gravy, of course, with sides of Fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes. It was not long before the beautiful plate hit my table, and I destroyed everything on that plate. When I thought it was over, I was handed the dessert menu that was two full rows worth of pie and other options. I was mesmerized by the length of it and was overwhelmed by the options. I texted my parents to tell them and suddenly I was going back to San Antonio with slices on slices worth of pie for them to have. When my parents came up to help move me in, they wanted to go to the Texan. They were impressed with how great the meal was alongside the pies. Pies that they bought extra of to take back with them to San Antonio. When I started my job, the first meal they took us new hires to was the Texan. I tried their Blue Plate Special and found out that Chicken Fried Pork Chops exist and fell in love with that. When my brother came and visited meeting my parents and me in Hutto, we went to the Texan. We enjoyed their appetizers and everyone had to have a slice of pie. Options for everyone. When a friend came and visited, she took a solo trip to the Texan while I was at work then told me she took the best nap of her life after. My buddy and I decided to go randomly one day after work to try their Hot Pie with Brandy Sauce. That thing is a tank and is worth a visit to try alone. What a sweet creation. When my girlfriend visited me in Hutto, I took her to the Texan and she will randomly text me about how much she misses the pie. I try to get her a slice every time she comes and visits. It is her favorite thing. It is clear to see why it is a favorite to so many because everyone I have taken to the Texan has left a fan wanting to come back. I brought my grandparents home a full Blueberry pie from the Texan Cafe which my grandma told me "was the best I have even since I was a little girl. Not too sweet with a great crust. Just right. A blueberry pie is my favorite." I know this review is less of a review and more of a collection of vignettes of many stories built inside the walls of the Texan Cafe, but that is what is so beautiful about southern hospitality and southern diners. That is why there is so much decor about the extensive history of Texan Cafe and the culture of Hutto on the walls. I went back this afternoon for the first time in a short while, but I find myself continuously impressed by the quality of the food, the efficiency as a whole, and just how welcoming everyone is inside. Their pies are just truly next level. Today, I went for the Chicken Fried Pork Chop Blue Plate Special which is truly heaven sent, potato salad, fried okra, and a slice of their cherry pie. It is a meal you feel blessed to eat and a restaurant you love supporting because of it. Every pie I have had at the Texan is better than any other pie I have eaten. They could be a full time bakery and still be the monument of Hutto. It just happens they have food that warms your heart too. RIYL: Grandma's cooking if it was not dry
