I smelled it at the red light! I was craving bbq and decided to swing by Salt Lick. I had to wait to be seated, but the wait wasn't long . I ordered an Arnold Palmer and someone took my order about 10 minutes later. I order the brisket and bison rib plate. The plate came with beans, cole slaw , and potato salad. The brisket was decent, I have to eat it with the fat to get a good flavor profile. The flavor wasn't bad at all! The bison rib was VERY good. I just wish my rib was more tender . Keep the bread next time, it wasn't warm and inviting to eat. The bread taste like an after thought. It was like bread was left in the car while all the other groceries were carried into the house. So yes, please keep the bread away. The beans didn't taste like baked beans/bbq beans . The potato salad wasn't that good. I loved my coleslaw because it had a unique flavor. Overall my experience was fine. I can see myself coming back.
This is a solid spot for bbq and it doesn't break the bank. The Thurman plate came with brisket sausage and pork ribs and two plates feed a family of four for about $40 total. Salt lick doesn't stack up to the flavors of the more modern bbq spots like interstellar or La bbq but it does the job for fraction of the price. The meats were tender and had the typical Texas bbq salt and pepper taste. The meats didn't have a distinctly strong Smokey taste but it was still good. I like the bbq sauce because it was more vinegary and tangy which compliments the fat and tender meat.
Salt Lick currently has three locations - the original location in Driftwood, Texas, one in Round Rock, TX and one in the Austin, TX airport. For a short time, Salt Lick had a small BBQ restaurant on Capitol of Texas Highway, which was super convenient. Tonight, I was at the Salt Lick BBQ location near the Dell Diamond. I was in Round Rock dropping off some documents, so I decided to ping a good friend to see if she wanted to eat at The Salt Lick, one of my favorite BBQ places. She said yes to the BBQ! Love friends who are spontaneous... The Round Rock location is the quintessential country BBQ joint - casual setting with wood tables and picnic like benches. It also has some uniquely Texas artifacts such as the Texas flag and rod iron finishes. They also have indoor and outdoor seating. Tonight it was quite chilly, so no one was eating outside. They plenty of free parking on both sides of the building. Our server, Patton, was very friendly and welcoming. He checked on us frequently. I love Salt Lick's BBQ turkey as it is super moist and flavorful. Tonight, I planned to get the turkey plate. When Patton said they were out of turkey, I felt like I was in an echo chamber where I heard the word...no, no, no, no, no! After I was resuscitated (kidding), I ordered the rib plate instead. The rib plate came with Cole slaw, pinto beans, and potato salad along with bread and pickles | onions. The ribs were tender with a sweet glaze. We split dessert - pecan pie and Blue Bell vanilla ice cream. The pecan pie was a bit disappointing as the topping was hard and the part in the middle that is supposed to be squishy had the consistency of hard gelatin. The ribs, BBQ sauce and ice cream were the standouts of the meal. I can eat Salt Lick BBQ sauce with almost any meat. Tonight, Salt Lick was super packed, and the noise level was pretty high. Overall, a pretty good meal...
This casual place with long picnic tables didn't have a wait on a Saturday around 11:30am at the end of November. You will be seated and a server will take your order. The server is nice and friendly. There's a nice variety of meat platters to choose. We ordered 2 meat plates and sweet potato fries for 3 adults who are good eaters. The food came out quickly. All of the meats were tender and moist. IMO the meats are a bit salty and not a lot of smoke flavor. Pickle spear from a jar and a raw onion accompany the meat. The sides of beans -and potato salad are good. Sweet potato fries are definitely sharing size and worth getting. Private parking lot. Great location on a main road off the highway.
I've been coming here since they only had their first location, and it's been amazing to see them grow. Their BBQ is always delicious and consistent across all their locations. The portions are generous, and the brisket is always tender, juicy, and flavorful without being too salty. I also love ordering the burnt ends as a treat. The ambience here is peaceful and calm, which made the visit even better. We brought our Australian Shepherd, and the staff were so kind--they even brought him a water bowl! Honestly, this location has won my heart.
Great place for BBQ! Picnic tables both indoors and outdoors. Decorated in a fun and lively way. The staff is friendly and informative. The food is delicious! I had Thurmans Choice with baked beans and potato salad. My fiancé had the Bison Ribs with baked beans and macaroni and cheese. Everything was delectable! We also asked for the bread, pickles, and onions. They were soooo good as well. Amazing place to go with friends. Next time I'm in Round Rock, I will definitely return!
If you want BBQ that has a strong wood smoked flavor this is the place to go. The meats are very flavorful and you really can taste the smoked taste on the meat and it is very tender. We tried the brisket, ribs and sausages and it was good. The server see nice and friendly. The only thing i wish they look into was the sauce they have it was pretty mild even the hot ones. The coleslaw needs a little more sting on them.
We grabbed lunch before heading back to the airport and our server was great. He was very attentive and always checked in with us. Many combos and platters for everyone's taste and their BBQ sauce was delicious that I just had to bring one home with me. Overall I love recommending Salt Lick BBQ to everyone!
It had been a few long years since I had been to the Salt Lick and was not going to miss out while in Austin. We went on a weekday at an off time and were seated promptly. Service was super friendly and efficient. The pork ribs, lean brisket and burnt ends were spectacular, as was the Cole slaw and bread. The beans were a little lacking in flavor and the cobbler was very sweet. Portions were a little on the light side. House BBQ sauces were delicious. This is an Austin institution and not to be missed.
Love me some Texas bbq! I got the brisket burnt ends and bison rib. Very good. Sides were Potato salad, Cole slaw and beans. All very good too. The potato salad reminded me of a German potato salad. No mayo in it, more like a vinegar base. The way I prefer it like my grandma used to make. Service was on point and friendly. Texas friendly. Place was clean and bathrooms too. Place is pretty big and the wait for the food was minimal. I'll also say the whole jalapeño I got was the hottest jalapeño I've ever had. read more
The service was great, our server actually had some really good recommendations on what to get so we don't have too much food. The sides that comes in the Salt lick plates are really good, the coleslaw, the potato and beans. We ordered the Bison rib & Brisket plate combo and the pulled pork. I thought brisket and the bison rib were more on the drier side. The pulled pork was more moist. We also ordered a side of sweet potato and that basket was big. Overall I would go back but I do wish the brisket was more moist. The inside is huge and very Texan. read more
Tried this place on a the recommendation of some friends that have been here several times before. It is a busy and bustling spot that has been around for a long time. Located right next to the baseball stadium and across from Kalahari Resort, I can imagine that the restaurant is always busy, loud, and lively. All the food is good but it is not your typical or traditional bbq flavors that you would expect. The meat is done right but doesn't come through with the smoke flavor you'd normally get from a TX bbq joint. The potato is absolutely unique. It reminds me of a German style potato salad with a little twist or something extra that o couldn't quite identify. But nonetheless, very good. I enjoyed the Cole slaw as well. It was just the right balance of freshness with a hint of the tang from the vinegar. And pricing is very reasonable compared to most bbq places these days; especially in the Austin-Round Rock area read more

Ribs and sausage were good. Beans were cold, potato salad was questionable. I enjoyed the coleslaw but the family didn't. Peach cobbler was okay. And pecan pie was not great. Our waitress was pleasant. ******Hubby went to the restroom and the worker that was in there did not wash his hands. He was later seen serving waters to a table nearby. ******** read more

Did take out on this trip --brisket, turkey, sausage and Cole slaw. The brisket was my favorite--tender, moist and large pieces. Their hot BBQ sauce is spicy!! The interior is casual. Food was ready when we arrived. read more

($80+)Its been about 7 years since we've ate here. The last time I ordered a beef ribs. It was tender, big, well smoked. We revisited and i ordered the the beef rib & bison rib. what a joke. Both look and tasted like they've been reheated and sat for a couple of days. Nothing but grease coats the mouth. Dry. Not tender. Chewy. I asked for a different rib since it was disgusting & they brought back an equal. What a shame. This place use to be so good. The Pictures I attached are the ribs they served up . Ive included a picture of my ribs I smoked up. Which would yall rather have. Never going to this place again. The last 2 pictures are of my delicious ribs read more
Stopped in for a late dinner 30 minutes before closing time. Sat at the bar, Liz waited on me. I haven't been to this location since about April 2020. Was driving down to Austin and needed a late dinner. Grabbed a beer, a lean sliced beef sandwich as I wanted to be healthy and have a side salad. Having had their macaroni in the past I wanted a small taste of that. That would've been plenty for dinner. As usual, it was all very good. Well executed and delivered promptly. Talking with the bartender/waitress, she asked me if I had the turkey before. I responded yes but it's been a long time. She brought out a slice for me to try. I think it was actually better than the lean sliced brisket; it was super moist and very flavorful. Probably should've asked her for a recommendation before going with my usual. As I was wrapping up dinner, she asked me if I wanted any dessert cause the kitchen was about to close. I told her no, but I did like their cobbler. In the blink of an eye, she had a nice small side of dessert, half peach cobbler and half blackberry cobbler. Just like the turkey it was very good and a courtesy of the house. I tipped her extremely well. Thanked her for her guidance and hit the road. Salt Lick does it right and Liz makes sure it is right. read more

This was our first time at Salt Lick, and it was amazing! We tried the all-you-can-eat Brisket, Sausage, Pork Ribs, Coleslaw, Beans, and Potato Salad, plus added Mac and Cheese (heavenly) and 1/2 lb of Turkey--everything was delicious! Huge Huge Huge shoutout to Melissa, our waitress on 10/5/25 around 6-7 PM. She was incredible--kept our plates and drinks full, made us laugh, and gave some of the best service we've had in a long time. She even let us order extra sides from the unlimited for our leftovers so they'd taste just as good later. That kind of care really stood out and made the whole experience unforgettable. She really deserves the recognition! We'll definitely be back! read more
Tried and true Texas BBQ! On a Friday afternoon, we were seated promptly by friendly, fun staff. This is everything a BBQ place should be... from the smell of the meat smoking to the guy slicing and trimming the meat ... who welcomed us like we were family! We had Pork ribs, sliced brisket and sausage! All excellent- of course! Salt lick has perfected the BBQ plate... including beans, Cole slaw and potato salad! Shout out to Ben- excellent service! read more

It was kinda different flavor wise than other spots we'd tried but amazing nonetheless!! #BOMB The atmosphere was very nice, family friendly also. If you haven't eaten at The Salt Lick, you are missing out on true Texas BBQ. Beautiful location conveniently located in Round Rock TX next to the baseball stadium and across the Hwy 79 from the Kalahari Resort and Water Park. Restaurant is always clean. And the service is great. Zharece provided my bother and I excellent customer service during our visit. The new lunch specials are the perfect size which includes drink and dessert. Only problem we experienced was there were no paper towels in the men's restroom. The Salt Lick remains on 'My Keepers List' read more
Visiting Austin and had to get some bbq, our friend recommended this place and it was incredible! Don't sleep on the Turkey, omg it was unlike any turkey I've ever had, full of flavor and melt in your mouth. The brisket and burnt ends were both delicious and hit the bbq spot, and the Mac and cheese was so good, I wish we had more! And be sure to save room for dessert, the cobbler (get half peach half berry) with ice cream was the perfect way to end the meal. Service was quick, atmosphere was warm and inviting and overall, a great Texas bbq experience read more

4 STARS Trying out The Salt Lick when visiting Austin is a MUST. The original location in Driftwood is pretty remote and far away from the rest of Austin, whereas this location in Round Rock is much more accessible. It's not quite as big as the original location, but they serve all the same food. Normally when I go, we get the all-you-can-eat family style meal which costs $32.95/adult. It includes brisket, sausage, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, and beans. Of these items, our faves are the sausage and the pork ribs. You have to use their SPICY bbq sauce when you eat the meats. It's one of my favorite bbq sauces of all time. It's a nice blend of tangy, sweet, and hot, and pairs well with ALL of their meats. As for the brisket, it's not my personal favorite as there is so much competition in the brisket space there in Austin. But definitely go for the sausage and pork ribs, and be sure to leave space for some pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on top for dessert. Absolutely delicious! Lots of parking at this location in Round Rock too. Be sure to take a bottle of their spicy bbq sauce home with you. I always take it back to California with me. read more
