My husband and I were in wine country for the weekend & stopped by for lunch on a Sunday at 10:30am. We were seated inside (cozy bar seats) and had such an incredible experience. Service? 5/5. We spent the entire time talking to the owner Sean as he cooked for us. Sean is truly made for hospitality... he's extremely warm/friendly and made us feel right at home. He even gave us two complimentary dishes -- the zhong dumplings & chicken congee set! SO generous. If we lived in the neighborhood, this would certainly be a regular spot for us. Food? 4/5. Love the menu, which is essentially a collection of some of my childhood favorites. The dishes are also all very homey, albeit a bit more fusion/creative than traditional. We had the below items: Hong Kong Claypot Rice du Jour (with chicken & lapcheong) - they nailed the crispy rice at the bottom!! While it wasn't the most fragrant claypot rice I've had (the lapcheong is store bought vs. home-cured, which makes a big difference), the savory/sweet sauce and the rice texture certainly hit the spot. Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice - I loved the ridiculously tender braised pork! The sauce was also very flavorful, although it was a bit sweeter than the typical lu rou fan in Taiwan. However, my husband absolutely loved this dish. Smashed Cucumbers - So refreshing and addicting. We couldn't stop eating one bite after another. It was a great appetizer and opened up our appetites. Zhong Dumplings - The sauce on these dumplings are indescribably delicious. Spicy, sweet, and oh-so-fragrant... we crushed every drop of it. Chicken Congee Set - This reminded me of my mom's congee! Loved that it's served with a side of rou sung (pork floss), zha cai (picked veggies), and fu ru (fermented bean curd)... just the way I like it! Although the restaurant is closed (but will re-open in new digs in about a month, per the owner), we were very fortunate to attend a class on clay pot cooking last night. The class was informative, fun and delicious! When we arrived, all the prep work was done and ready to go. We made two clay pot dishes (first one with pork, second one was vegan) and a side veggie dish. Everything was very tasty and brought back fond memories of me burning rice in a clay pot as a child (latch key kid - yes, I'm that old). Highly recommend either taking a class from them or eating at their soon-to-open restaurant, or both! read more

A compatriot of ours invited us out for drinks and celebrations which worked well. We needed a night out to relax. The out door area is set out like a small patio. Service was friendly, helpful with any questions that we had, and checked in here and there. We had ordered the rock cod and mapo tofu along with the zhong dumplings, smashed cucumber, and fish fragrant eggplant to share. My favorites were the smashed cucumber and the mapo tofu. The sauce on the cucumber was really well balanced. It was a great compliment to the eggplant and mapo tofu which were heavy on the spice. The mapo tofu the sauce was clean with just a bit of tingle; not over powering in that sense. I'd want the sauce to inundate the tofu tho but it's just a different application. For the eggplant, the flavor was good and the meat of it was cooked through. The skin however wasn't on all of it making it hard to bite through depending on which piece you got. The zhong dumplings had a nice balance for sweet and savory though I didn't notice the spiciness as much. The rock cod was well cooked though I didn't try it myself since I was limiting meats/seafood that day. Overall, the application of spice and chilis made for really balanced flavors across the board. We'll certainly be back through to try out more of the menu. It's nice to see more options for asian flavors popping up in the area over the last few years. read more

Wow, what a popular spot in the little town of Forestville! There was a line to check in at 5:40, 10 minutes after they opened for dinner. As I glanced around, I realized that the place already looked full inside and out. It was a beautiful evening so we preferred to sit outdoors. They have about a dozen tables outside and luckily there was one table left. Success! The servers were running to drop off carafes of water, menus, and alcoholic beverages to their customers. We had been here once before for lunch, but their dinner menu is much larger and varied. We decided to try: Taiwan braised pork rice - seasoned pork, steamed veggies, pickles and egg over rice. A delicious combination of savory flavors Zhong Dumplings - 5 pork dumplings in a mild chili oil Eggplant - Fava bean miso and chili cooked up beautifully with fresh eggplant Green beans - special of the day The dishes are original and flavorful. Our favorite was the rich, umami-packed Zhong dumplings. They were an incredible taste explosion. The dumplings are sitting in a chili oil sauce, which I thought was mild, so don't be afraid to give it a try. We luckily ordered two of these dumpling dishes for our table of four and it was clearly our favorite dish. The flavors are nothing like your typical Asian restaurant. They are unique and thoughtfully orchestrated. All of the dishes we ordered had a nice balanced flavor. The eggplant and string bean dishes came with a small bowl of rice which was a nice addition to our dinner. Servers are attentive and friendly. During our meal, four different servers came to check on us. I eventually had to ask about our green beans because we were pretty much done eating but our last dish had not arrived. They quickly took care of it and delivered it within 10 minutes, nice and hot. Initially, I had joked around with our server asking why he wasn't writing down our order and he said he'll remember so when he came by to give us our check, I told him you forgot one dish! He showed me that he in fact got our order right, it was the kitchen that didn't follow through. We all had a fun chuckle over this. The servers were all hustling to provide excellent service. I've come a few times as it's the closest Asian cuisine near me - and I'm SO GRATEFUL. Being half Asian, it's comfort food to me and they do it so well. First visit had the black cod and Taiwanese beef soup - chef made a small mistake but quickly made up for it. I just visited Taiwan and loved the resemblance! Subsequent visits have been more Takeout orders. Eggplant and dumplings never disappoint. Owners are super friendly. Vibe is chill and family friendly. What an absolute west county gem. Where to begin. I've been to Baso a few times solo for lunch and finally got to go with a group the other night and try all the things. Everything is incredible. They have fun side drinks with some of the dishes (tea, broth) and I love the added touch of thoughtful plate ware. BaSo is THE hidden gem of Sonoma county. Their Asian-inspired menu is creative and inspired, the owners and staff are amazing and the food is spectacular. They're up and running and creating their magic even in their temporary space, so check their calendar and prepare to be impressed. I can't get enough of their clay pot rice (comes in a steaming hot pot that crackles when the sauce is poured over it. You stir it up - scraping the sides/bottom to scour up the delectable crispy bits, and swoon. Be sure to add their homemade chili crisp (and take a jar of it home)! Glad I got to try here with a friend today! We weren't too hungry so bought some stuff to go. While there - we got the lotus root, the lamb skewers, and the fish (sole) to try. The lotus root was savory and crunchy, I liked it paired with the wood ear mushrooms. The lamb was juicy and the rub on it was yummy. My favorite was the fish. It was cooked well and the pickled greens were a great addition. We scooped pieces up and ate it over rice - scrumptious. The ambiance is quirky and reminds me of an Asian night market. Oh gosh this place is soo good. You have order inside and they bring the food out to you in a cute outside sitting area. My friend and I shared some zhong chili crisp dumplings, which were delicious. There were plenty there that could've made a meal in itself, but we did each order an entrée. I had the vegetarian clay pot which had a very flavorful broth with tofu and rice. The being having a fantastic char at the bottom that I just don't think you would get with food to take out. I had the barley tea which was actually cold over ice. It was tasty, but it also was very weak that I could barely taste the barley flavor. My friend ordered another glass and it was stronger for her. The customer service was excellent and the prices were fair. It's such a cute town that I don't visit very often, but I think I will now that I know Bazaar Sonoma is there. read more

I stopped this place randomly. Initially, I was skeptical but decided to give it a shot! I am glad I did it. Their Zhong Dumplings were on spot! The only thing I would like if they were more spicy. But that's my personal preference. I really liked their Xinjiang Lamb Skewers! They blew me away with juiciness and great seasoning! Their Baso Siu Mai were ok, but I ate them after spicy dumplings and Lamb skewers so don't take me on it fully. And finally, their hainan chicken rice was amazing finish to all above mentioned appetizers! This place is definitely great and worth to check out. I was initially confused with style cuisine before I look at menu. I thought it was Korean but menu resolve the issue right away. Sonoma County needs a gem like Bazaar Sonoma (BaSo). Chinese food is my favorite cuisine so I had to come check this place out! Upon arriving, I was greeted with a warm welcome, offered menus and seating anywhere. The restaurant is a L shape with the left being the bar and the right where all the seating are. We found a little table, chose our dishes, went up to the counter to order/pay. We loved the Japan night life scenery playing on the TV. We noticed some pre-packaged foods for sale (ramen, sunflower seeds, cookies etc). Though the menu is small (for now), it consists of cold dishes, made to order dumplings, noodles and rice. Dinner is the same menu as lunch though I was informed upon asking that next week they would feature new soups and stews! Our Chrysanthemum tea came arrived first. For dishes, we ordered the won ton noodle soup, Zhong Dumplings (spicy) and the Jai vegetable dumplings. It was enough to share for the two of us. Zhong Dumplings is spicy with a hint of sweet. The Jai Vegetable was more muted so we dipped those into the Zhong sauce, worked out well! The won ton soup was a big bowl of egg noodles, pork & shrimp dumplings. It was so appetizing and a perfect dish for a cold, winter's day. I love the traditional Chinese menu but with an innovative twist. This is not your typical Chinese American restaurant. According to the owners they are inspired by the concept of family meals, food they grew up eating in China, as well as regional Chinese cuisine based on Szechuan recipes. We were staying in Forestville for the night and were thrilled that we found Bazaar. This is a newer pop up style spot with counter service and BYOB. But don't let the casual vibes steer you away, because the food is anything BUT low key. The dumplings were amazing, but the real standout was the whole steamed halibut with steamed oil. Apparently the menu changes frequently, so I will have to come back for more amazing specials. read more

Came for lunch on a Friday. Freshly made very tasty dishes. We were greeted and given menus to peruse and find a table. We decided on the sword leaf salad and gyoza type dumplings as an appetizer, I got the pork rice dish and my friend got the gyoza as their main as they had the salad. Salad was great, a combo of cucumber and lettuce flavor. Dumplings were freshly made and had a good spiciness. I loved the pork rice dish with the dark sauce. I also love that they make their own garlic onion crunch to add heat as I love spicy. With some tea to drink our lunch came to $88. Not inexpensive but for freshly made food with high quality ingredients it is about the going rate. Food came out after not too long, we expected a bit of a wait as that is what is needed to freshly prepare good food. Overall a very delicious meal. I've been waiting for a restaurant like this for this cute town! Finally! From the beginning, the staff was very welcoming, hospitable, and personable. It was dinner time and they had a special that I couldn't resist especially when the girl at the counter said it was her absolute favorite. I don't know what it was called, but it was delicious! It's like a Korean stew with cheese and can feed 3-4 people. The rice cakes were perfectly chewy and went so well with the tasty sauce. The meat could've been cooked a tad more, but it didn't take away from the yummy dish. It also came with a flavorful rice and an abundance of kimchi and a picked radish. TLDR; good sh!t, eat here. I went to Forestville, on purpose, for the first time, ever! I don't know anything about this town. Usually it's been a quaint little place I had to pass through to get to the beach. The only other recollection of Forestville is a cute girl I tutored in math at the JC. she said she lived in Forestville and that was the end of that. But I digress. The main strip is maybe a mile long at most. It has a very "small town" feel but active. There were people bustling around the shops. School kids heading home. A few hanging out by the diner and ice cream shop. And lots of passing traffic. Today's goal was to try out a little restaurant called Baso. But don't look for that name. Look for Bazaar. I know, bizarre right? There's a patio in front, which will probably be filled come spring and summer. But for now it's just an empty space, much like my soul. There is a cute door where I had my George Bush moment. I pulled instead of pushed and was dumbfounded by my stupidity. It was even more embarrassing when the owner had to open it for me. We laughed at my expense, which is the best way. Anyway, I was worried at first because I only saw a small dining area to the left and a bar section to the right. The place wasn't busy so I could have taken any seat but I prefer tables rather than bar stools. I asked if they had any tables and was lead to beyond the bar area where there were plenty of tables. There was even a kitchen island style table for larger groups. The wall in this room has a spectacular painting of mountains and clouds done in a very stylistic manner. It's like hatched lines but not. Very Asian inspired so if you stare at it instead of a cell phone, you'll be transported there, forgetting you're in Forestville. I did not get that experience as I chose to sit by the window with the best view of the outside. The menu is divided into Lunch on one side and Dinner on the other. It's small, the selections not the menu size. I wanted to try everything but being a single halfling I could only fit one dish in. If I was a hobbit I would have destroyed it all and asked for seconds. I ended up with the clay pot rice. And a Vanilla Coke. Don't do that. It ruins the main dish. Just drink something neutral. The dish comes out piping hot. The server warns you to be careful. There is even a rubber guard that faces you in case you think it's a joke. It's hot and sizzling away as I took pictures to remind myself what I ordered. There were plenty of red sausages covering a decent amount of pork belly and rice underneath. Sprinkles of green onions added a nice finish touch. I grabbed the wide mouth spoon and peeled the crunchy rice from the pot. It was ca-crunch-eyyy! The kind of crunch that would make a captain cry. The side of steamed bok choy seemed small and the sweet soy sauce unfamiliar. But they weren't. Honestly, I didn't know how to eat this. Was I supposed to dish it from the pot into the bowl? Because if I was, I failed. I'm the kind of person who hates doing dishes. So if I'm not in the company of others, I eat directly from the pot. And since I wasn't with anyone, I ate directly from the hot pot. Yeah, there were other patrons in the restaurant but who cares? The Chinese sausage had that salty savory taste I love. The rice was rich in flavor from the oils and pork belly. And the crispy bottom added a nice texture. I poured the sweet soy sauce into the dish (was that wrong?). The bok choy was a palette neutralizer since everything was full of umami. Personally, I would have liked something acidic to cut through it all. Maybe kimchi or pickled cucumbers. I kept ruining my taste buds after every Vanilla Coke sip. Please, don't be me and skip the sodas with this kind of food. As I was eating I could not help but overhear background conversations. I noticed that the owner who opened the door for me was going around to every table and saying hello. At some tables he had long conversations as if they were friends. When he came to my table, he was just as friendly, even though I've never met him before being embarrassed by that damn door. I respect people who do that, taking time to know their customers. Or at the very least charm them into not writing a bad review... not that they would have to worry. By the time I left, they were closed for lunch. But I figured out, on my own, that I needed to pull, wait... no push... no... pull, PULL on the door to open it. Dammit Forestville, why do you have to be so difficult? read more

This was probably the worst dining experience we have ever had. We were so excited to try this place based on so many good reviews. The pork in the Shu Mai dish came out RAW. The server was apologetic and took it back. Our dumpling noodle soup also had raw pork served to us. After waiting another 45 minutes for them to bring our other food, the server came to let us know that the egg custard dish wasn't "setting"well. We were the ONLY guests there. It was a complete disaster. After serving us 2 raw pork dishes and no other guests there, we thought the Chef/owner who was there, would have come out to apologize. Disastrous experience is an understatement! Check to make sure your pork is cooked through! I would hate for anyone to get trichinosis!! This is a quaint, hole in the wall type spot. The workers/owners are very kind and welcoming. I'm happy to have an authentic Asian spot in West county that has well-made multicultural dishes with quality ingredients. You can tell there is a lot of intention and care behind what they put out. Despite the place being counter service, the woman still approached to check in on how things were. I've only been once and it was within the first few months they opened, but I went to their pop up in Healdsburg once and it had me eager for their upcoming opening. I have been following their instagram page awhile and see how often they have specials or rotate the menu which is fun. The picture only has my friend's entree, I got the wonton soup. It smelled so good I forgot to take a picture. It was comforting, as someone who grew up between the bay and SoCo and has a limited count of options for Asian soup in the area that satisfy me. The spicy eggplant and pork rice were two of the favorites; the green beans and sui mai were also great. The fish dish was very tender and well prepared, and the smashed cucumbers was a nice bright dish. We will absolutely be back!!! Maybe we caught them on an bad night, but... While the food was fantastic, the service was way WAY off. Service was forced-friendly, dishes came out at an odd order, and very slowly - if they came out at all. Waiting 30 minutes between the small plate dishes is just terrible. And when our forgotten dish and our pot of tea (which was visible, cooling behind the counter after being filled) never arrived, we asked for it to go - and waited another 30 minutes. All without any explanations or apology. Also, do not sit at the bar. The small-seated stools are oddly shaped and very uncomfortable. Even though the food was great, the rest of the experience soured us on what we had hoped would be a regular spot for us. This county lacks gourmet Chinese food and we're very sad about our poor experience here. read more

Nope. Really uncomfortable seating. The space has kind of a "messy" ambiance. Service was very mediocre. Water is self-serve, and the water dispenser was empty. There were no napkins on the very wobbly table. There were no condiments on the table (we had to ask for soy sauce and chili sauce). This sounds like an entitled, complainer review... but honestly, aren't the things that I missed in this experience just table stakes for basic restaurant service - even at a Dennys? I can't say much about the food. They didn't have the two things we wanted to order, and we didn't really care for the things we ordered instead. The things we wanted to order might have been delicious. They were sold out already on a Friday afternoon so they were probably good. Maybe better planning, on Valentine's Day, on a three day weekend? We would honestly put up with any restaurant experience if the food is exceptional.
