What the heck is she talking about? The host of Bazaar Cafe looks at me and repeats. "Are you ready? You are up next after the guy sitting over there with the guitar." Huh? I couldn't speak. Did I accidently sign up on the open mic list thinking it was a petition to save Gavin Newsom from Chris Daly? Not that I think Gavin Newsom is doing a great job. But, Hot Dog, he's hot! Seriously. Leave the guy in office so I can watch him...errrr...listen to him give speeches. His gangster like old school twang really hits the...ohhhhh, I digress. Where was I? Oh yeah! Bazaar Cafe. The host is staring at me patiently. Finally, I blurt out. "I'm not the one. You got the wrong person." She laughs and realizes her mistake. She mistaken me for another brown hair girl who was sitting about 5 feet away from me. Thank Buddha. I would have ruined open mic night. I have no musical talent what-so-ever, but I come here to check out the open mic. It's a great place to just sit and read a book or meet a friend to catch up on the latest Yelp reviews. I finally actually ordered something from bazaar. a regular non-fat latte, thank you! The place was empty on a mid-Sunday afternoon and service was a bit slow, but, the guy brought our drinks to us in the backyard, which was really nice. With a sly smile and a line like that, how could I refuse his offer to buy me a cup of coffee? Thus began my eight-month and now beyond, love affair with Bazaar cafe (not the boy, heehee) I often would spend up to ten hours a week while in the midst of my Masters Thesis here and while I completed that, I continue to go to Bazaar almost every Sunday, after I docent at the Legion of Honor or the de Young. I grab a handful of ruffled through newspapers that they keep on hand for everyone to brain sponge from and I snuggle into that loveseat in the little room next to the lamp with no shade (seriously, what weirdo stole Bazaar cafe's lampshade? I would like to meet you.) I read, sip on the coffee from their signature pint glass and listen to some great tunes playing overhead, which in my belief is the best music of any coffee house in San Francisco. Because it is not near my work, my home, or near any of my friends' places, I love to go and simply be in my personal zone. The coffee is ok, (the Castro Tart has the best coffee in the city btw) and they have this charming "honor" system for the fifty-cent refills, which is a little jar by the self-serve coffee carafes. I am stingy with my five stars. I don't just give them away, like there's no tomorrow. So over the weekend I revisited one of my old hangouts, Bazaar Cafe. I used to frequent this place ALL the time when I lived in the outer Richmond. And upon my revisit, it reminded me how much I used to LOVE this place. And it hasn't changed. So, it definitely deserves the five star treatment! I love the quirkiness of the cafe, the live-music nights, the "ask the scientist" nights. Their coffee is great! I haven't found a place that parallels the smoothness of their coffee. They've got a good selection of food: bagels, pastries, yummy veggie/vegan soups, quiches, salads, sandwiches, Japanese curry rice, etc. This place is such a cozy, inviting, unique neighborhood joint...they must have great feng-shui! A 1970s hippie vegan college style cafe, and we're talking Santa Cruz not Palo Alto. It feels like you're in somebody's house and you are. Some little old rooms, couches and benches, a small upright piano, two guitars and a lute in the window, ecclectic furniture, a home style back kitchen, andvthree vinyl barstools against what must have once been a soda fountain. On the CD the latest album from a whiny folk singer who was popular in the 60s. Drinks range from 17 kinds of Republic of Tea (iced tea is the blackberry sage), italitan sodas, beer, sake, some funky sodas, wine, and mead. An ample selection of soups, quiches, salads, baked goods, and Japanese plates is home made here or by local vendors, tasty, fairly priced, and very very vegan. There is much tahini, tamare, and miso, but no salt and pepper died in the making of these dishes. The bathroom door has "toilet" signs in 10 languages and inside are color copy machine posters for their wine tastings, musical acts (bluegrass!), and appearances by local scientists. Decent latte and prety good choco macadamia cookies. This place also serves some sandwiches & simple Japanese items such as curry over rice, teriyaki and unagi bowls. The dessert selection could be bigger. The selection pretty much consists of cookies, madeleines, biscottis and rice crispy treats. The cafe has a small garden in the back which is nice on a sunny day, but that doesn't happen often in Outer Richmond! Great atmosphere that offers plenty of comfy seating, garden patio, and the occasional live performance. The counter girl was nice and prices were pretty standard. It was warm and cozy and had free wi-fi. What more can one ask? Well, better drinks. Granted, I didn't try the coffee, but the much-raved about chai was very weak and tasted like warm spiced milk. The "hot cider" was actually warm TreeTop apple juice with a cinnamon stick in it. :( And neither beverage was hot enough. Was really looking forward to getting a coffee here, since it's right down the street from my house. I walked inside, and somebody had just finished ordering a couple things. Since there was only one girl working, she had to take care of each persons order, right after they placed it. As she was preparing the persons order, I sat down out of courtesy, as opposed to standing at the cash register until she was finished with the previous order. Somebody else walked in and then stood at the cash register until she finished. When she finished, she didn't even ask me if I was going to order something, or mention to the guy that just walked in that I was here first. Which left me with three options: * Tell the guy that I was here first. * Wait until she finished yet another order while standing over her shoulder at the cash register to ensure nobody steals my place again. * Leave So I didn't say anything and just walked out. Love this place. The seats are comfy, the tables are nice n' big --great for setting up laptops if you so choose,... The free internet is a huge plus (WHAT is with those chain bookstores charging for Internet??) adn their menu is right up my alley. They feature Ochazuke (total comfort food- Japanese Rice Soup) and Unagi Donburi (also total comfort food...) - They also have curry rice and wasabi popcorn, which i have yet to try... I can't bring myself to order Ochazuke with a latte (that seems reaaaly weird to me, kind of like ordering a pepsi with sushi) but they also offer bagels and other baked goods, too, if you so choose! I've discovered the Bazaar cafe a couple weeks ago when I was looking for a coffee shop that stays open past 6pm. Honestly, I've walked by the cafe a bunch of times before but wasn't sure if it were open. I am glad I tried to open the door because it was actually open and there were people there. The coffee tastes good so it must be done right. I like the chairs outside. It is not always that I can find chairs that are comfortable for painful lower back. These chairs have to be declined to an extent and the ones they have outside are that type of chairs. The environment inside is kind of unique because it is not as spacious as other coffee shops so people sit relatively closer than elsewhere. It reminds me of a living room full of guests. Almost every day a bunch of different musicians arrive at the cafe and have shows on their small stage. It sounds like there is variety of styles so someone is likely to like it at least one of the days. There is a big outside patio area where you can sit as well. I haven't tried food here yet so I am not commenting on that. I did see how people order soups all the time. Note: this is unrelated to the quality of the cafe but rather to a couple customers. They sit and enjoy the cafe inside. Sometimes they take a smoke break. I do not mind that at all. But why be so rude to the cafe by throwing your cigarette buts almost next to the cafe entrance? I honestly can't seem to find anything wrong with the Bazaar Cafe. Normally, I would complain about things like the ambiance, or the quality of the coffee, or the seats, or even the music they play in the background. Honestly in this case, I cannot. The ambiance is relaxing, the coffee good, the seating comfortable and the music well selected. Nor can I grouse about the food, or the live artists they bring in, I love the curry, the baked goods and being able to hear excellent songwriters on a nightly basis. Over the course of my visits, the Bazaar Cafe has started to feel like a home, and is now my go-to place when I have a ton of writing or reading to do. There are few things more pleasant then sitting out back with some wine when the sun is out, or in front of the huge windows when the weather turns gloomy. It is truly an oasis in the foggy barrens of the Outer Richmond. I can't recommend stopping by enough. read more

I love that this place is walking distance, it's chill and the patio in the back is a little bit of urban peace. The beverages are above average but I rarely get anything to eat here. It's a hangout kind of place good for a 'coffee date' or just someplace new to drink coffee. On a weekend morning / afternoon or weekday this place is great for working or reading. If you enjoy social smoking, there's a little garden for you in the back. Sometimes you can just join a group of people in the back and carry a light and interesting conversation while you bum a cigarette. One star for food and service. Five stars for ambience and live music. Total overall would be two stars, I guess. I came here on Thursday night because some friends were doing open mic. I ordered a salmon salad, which took about twenty minutes. It was simply a small plate with mixed greens, red onion, tomato slices, cucumber, and a small pile of smoked salmon. While it was fresh, the dressing was too salty. I only used half of the little cup it came in. The only things I loved about it were the super fresh tomato slices. Later, my friend ordered a chicken panini, and it ended up taking an entire hour before it was served, despite her going up to the counter every fifteen minutes to inquire about it. They simply said it would take two minutes. No, it took an hour. It wasn't worth the wait: the bread was hardly warm, and the whole sandwich was small and really dry. And apparently, most of the sandwiches are served with pretzels, just fyi. BF's order of caesar salad also took an hour to make. Really!? What the hell. He noticed that it was obviously from a package as well. It's ridiculous that it took an hour just to make a salad and a sandwich, both of which were kind of expensive (I think both were about $7) and came in small portions. I was getting pissed off about it because we could've spent the same amount somewhere else, like Art's Cafe, and we would've been quickly greeted with much more delicious (and hot) food. I understand that it was during open mic night, and many people were there, but at least an apology would've been nice. It's heartbreaking for me because I love coming here for the awesome live performances, and the actual space (and the back patio) is very beautiful. Les and Makiko Wisner are the owners of this most original cafe, having created a very unique oasis in the heart of the Richmond District. They are beautiful people; kind, caring and generous. Just the variety of the offerings is impressive. They display the works of a new artist every month on their walls. Usually, one afternoon a month is set aside for the artist to come to the cafe, have wine, crackers, dip, fruit and cheese with the clientele and answer questions about his inspiration. The art here is as diverse as the music you will hear. They have what they call a "listening station". It's a small room where you don a set of headphones, dial up the CD you want to hear and jive with the vibe. A lot of the offerings are artists who play at the cafe on a fairly regular basis. There is free live music almost every night except Tuesday which Les calls Study Hall. You will find that his taste in music is eclectic ranging from blues, country, Irish reels, flamenco to chamber music (last time they played all Beethoven). Thursday is open mic, if you feel so inclined. You never know what you are going to hear. Last night they had an accordion player from Europe who had everyone on their feet. He was so good they insisted on an encore. Something you rarely see. Another night they had a gentleman whose flamenco could rival Segovia's. He also gave an encore. The only rule is that the material be original, that is, composed by you. The staff are courteous and generous, highly energetic with what seems like a genuine love for what they do so be kind; tip them big time. They work hard and deserve it! They serve alcohol, every kind of coffee you can think of and the food is wonderful. They have the most tastey chicken curry dish (and I don't like curry!). AND, they have an enchanting garden in the back fraught with flowers, fruiting trees, cacti and humming birds and the art displayed outside in the garden is contributed by local artists. It's a wonderful place to sit in the sun (or fog) out of the wind and read their Bay Guardian while sipping a latte and eating a vegeburger. K needed to be in the City today for a hot date who flew in from NYC for a visit before he leaves for Princeton next month - they are at the Giants/Dodgers closer (3rd row field seats, baby!) hoping the Home Team will muster a respectable finish to the three-game series. So today ended up being a perfect opportunity to work on my vow to live outside my usual box. I did a couple of yelp searches, and headed to the almost-always-overcast Richmond District as a respite from the heat of Sac-town. My first stop was for lunch at the Bazaar Cafe. I managed to find a parking space about three blocks away, which for Richmond, is a lucky find. This part of S.F. has some gentle elevation changes - a city girl's version of a hilly hike -- with the pleasant scenery of well-kept large early 20th century architecture. I picked the Cafe because it had free Wi-Fi internet, a place to chill, and a nice yelp review. I am in a room that has the feel of a small living room lined with a couch and small tables, plugs, and lamps - a set-up designed to provide internetting comfort. The larger room has a similar but less cosy decor. A nice place to chill...check! My little apple-top is showing a strong internet connection, but despite repeated attempts, no internet access...servers are not able to help...so, free internet access...maybe if you can pick it up. But so far, me and another patron are not having any luck. The menu is not cohesive, but definitely interesting. Everything from curry to teriyaki to panini to quiche to hot dogs to coffee. Sort of a weird smorgasbord of choices. There is a symbionic relationship between the menu and the music - started with country and flowed into early beatnik. Hmmmm. I chose the mushroom and chard quiche for lunch, and it is a little too cheesy for me. Maybe there are better things, but I asked the server what she would suggest, and she didn't offer much in the way of guidance. When I walked in, the place was almost empty, but in the last 15 minutes, it has filled up so I suspect it is a popular local hang-out. I like the Atlas Cafe in the Mission better for food and for interesting clientele. But like I said, I am trying to step outside of my comfort zone and try new places. Hit or miss experiences are the wonderful, serendipitous nature of exploration. Bazaar Cafe is okay - a rating of 2.5 in a City where there are better choices. read more

My friend and I, who were sitting at the tables out front, looked at each other and said "Garden?" It was my first time there, but she had been there a few times before and never noticed the garden. So we went out back and had a wonderful afternoon - coffee, wine, cigarettes and sunshine! The crowd was friendly and the service was great. Its 9pm now and a girl in on the piano singing how she'd miss a guy if he died. My sister wants to know if i wanted anything to drink. There was about 30 people there, i shook my head, sweating slightly, praying i didn't ruin the ink on my sheets of poetry. I can't do it. I can't get up there and read. The hosts asks if there's anymore performers and i stayed silent. he asks the last act to continue on. Someone walks in the door, asks if he can perform.. yes he can, there's room. Quietly i tap the host on the arm and whispered.. or maybe i didn't whisper, just my fright making my voice quieter then usual. me: Have there been many poets up him: about 3 or so, usually we don't get as many but its been great me: I'm signed up him: you are? why didn't you say anything me: its my first time, I'm scared, i don't think i will him: you will.. you can, you'll be great me: no, i cant him: you will, just say yes... just say yes... me: yes (ever so quietly) He had the most melodic, hypnotizing voice. If I've ever spoken to a cult leader.. i imagine he would have that voice. I didn't want to say yes.. but i did. I got called up.. and i walked up slowly.. my sister standing in the back smiling. I sat down in front and mentioned how.. i have huge stage fright and i just might faint. I laugh nervously and explained that.. I'm not really a writer. I'm just a girl who writes whats in her head.. and that's scary enough. The crowd... (i love you all!!) gave me such encouragements. So i read my newest piece "The Perfect First Kiss" and got huge applauds.. the boys even whistled and i blushed profusely. My second piece, Words Dedicated To My Mother. Got and even bigger applause, even the girl behind the counter came to say i was fantastic. I couldn't stop smiling. THANK YOU Bazaar Cafe..for being my first open mic experience ever!! I'm in SF and I needed to find a place to hop online. Go here! If I could give this place 4.5 stars, I would... The place is much better than your average run-o-the mill Starbucks. I came here, bought lunch and/or tea, and can sit here and work for hours. The food isn't terribly impressive (I had the chicken panini which was fine), but enjoy the space and peace. And unless there's a scheduled event going on (e.g. a poetry reading), you won't be bothered at all. Terrific! The choice of music played over the speakers is...eclectic...definitely, but nothing terribly annoying. The music will depend on who's in charge behind the counter. Antique-ish, grungy cafe with a telephone booth, collection of books/board games, and a garden in the back. Every table inside was occupied, but it was very quiet. No one was talking. Perhaps it's more lively on the live music days, but otherwise it's not the type of place to hold a conversation, unless you go to the garden. Friendly service. read more

This place is great! First, the espresso is exceptional and the food is super tasty. Be aware that usually it's one person running the show so menu items will take a little longer but it's definitely worth it! Second, there always seems to be some cool little event happening. Every time I've visited Bazaar Cafe, I've been nervous. That's because I used to read my short fiction here on Monday nights, and I'm a mess before I read what I've written. After I read, though, I was able to settle down and enjoy the atmosphere. I don't remember what the food tasted like, but that's because I was a bunch of nerves. I remember the hot chocolate being good, and the workers are really nice. I also really dig the interior and the intimacy of the place. One of my favorite cafes to hang out at! Yes, definitely not the shee-shee type cafe, but the type that I think of when I think 'San Francisco cafe". Down-to-earth, 'coffee house' kinda place to go and kick back. I like that they offer music in the evening and art for sale on their walls. They seem to really support the small artist. What immediately makes me happy about Bazaar are the guitars at the window, the welcoming wall piano that greets you right as you walk in, the simple and hearty food and the no fluff coffee. The best "kavarna" in The Richmond. My wife is from Prague and I spent five years helping to support a coffee house, or kavarna, in Vinohrady called Meduza. This place, like Meduza, offers good coffee, great snacks/food, and alcohol (Pilsner Urquell really kicks butt). This is enough to get you to hang out all day. Add to that the masterful garden and you have a place to call home. The one thing Bazaar Cafe offers more of than Meduza is live entertainment. Sometimes this is too distracting, especially if you just want to go sit and contemplate saving the world from people. In any case, still a 10 (well, a five really). read more

This is my favorite coffee shop. It is usually a quiet place during the day that is great for reading or getting work done. It has a really cool (and rather large) garden area in the back with tables that you would miss unless you look for it. The food is really good and has a number of items for vegans. The veggie curry and various soups rarely miss. At night the atmosphere changes and Richmond residents come out to listen to acoustic sets by local musicians. The staff is nice, the music (whether live at night or on CD during the day) is usually pretty good, and the garden is well worth the trip. read more

Is it wrong to say that you have faith in science? My faith in the general intelligence of my fellow man came when I tried to show up to ask a scientist (www.askascientistsf.com) in the outer Richmond and It was more packed than a Foriegner concert at the capitol center after the cold as ice tour. I am always on the hunt for places like this. Since I moved to the city, I have become a connoisseur of places in which to artfully sequester oneself. This place is firmly on my list. Everything from the different variety of benches, chairs, and pillows in the main area to the delicate mixture of charm and aloofness of the barista girl who works there adds to it's appeal. Sit in the garden. There aren't any power outlets, but there is part of a shovel. Sounds you will hear: The electric swell of the muni bus as it accelerates nearby Someone's windchime The faint murmur of school kids at recess a few blocks away The occasional chirp of the birds The momentary beating of tiny wings, as a bird lands nearby to inspect some maybe-seeds on the wooden deck. In other words, a perfect place to spend the afternoon. Come in the summer, when the sun is overhead and spend the day with a good book, surrounded by a small urban menagerie of flowering trees and the city itself. read more
