We went here for our anniversary (amongst a day of fun activities and food) and had a great time. We booked the 12PM slot and ended up being by ourselves. Wes was very welcoming and attentive - he offered lots of instruction and corrections to form as we got used to it. He came back and checked up a few times, taught us how to throw single handed after about 30 minutes of playing games by ourselves. Absolutely no complaints, we had a great time! Took a friend here for his birthday and it was amazing. The staff is extremely helpful and talks you through every step to where, even as a first timer, I felt confident when we finally got to playing. There are multiple game options beyond just aiming and hitting. Drinks are a bit pricey but with something that sharp you're not going to want more than one. I can't wait to go back! read more

I stopped in during one of their free open houses, as a total newbie....and I had a great time! The instructor was patient and attentive, alternating between giving tips and giving you space to just feel it out and practice for a bit. Throwing an axe was both easier and harder than I expected - easy to get started but difficult to get consistently good at. They also have a nice space to just hang out with a beer (full cash bar available!), billiards, fuseball, and a couple arcade games. It was fun to both throw axes and to watch the staff throw bullseyes effortlessly. I also tried the bigger, heavier axe, which was fun and mildly terrifying. I had a lot of fun and it was a very unique experience, the guys running it were great and do all the counting and calling who is up next so you can just have fun! They even offered to take several group pictures at the end... Check in was quick and on done on iPads. The music they were playing was good and set a good vibe for the night! I really enjoyed playing even though I only won one round. A few small things they could improve on are... They could have a closet or coat rack, there was no where to hang our jackets. they could use more seating and better signage outside and on the door. The fridge was a little dirty. We arrived a bit early and were confused if we had the right spot they showed up right at 8. They should sell water i was having wine but got really thirsty it would of been great to have some water. All and all I had a good night doing something fun and different and I would do it again! read more

For those of you who have never experienced axe throwing in Toronto, simply imagine if the general concept and aesthetic of bowling, the kinetic desperation of wanting to do something active yet indoors in Toronto during the winter, and axe throwing, had a baby. This is what Batl is all about. As a photographer, I volunteered and participated at a private event at this location a few months ago. Granted, it was my first time practicing my zombie-apocalypse-axe-throwing skillz, and for what is worth, I am now certain I could easily, and proudly survive on the wasteland for 2, maybe 3 days, tops. Either way, lots of fun was had, and if a bit of action and adventure are part of your make-up, then this venue would serve great both as a 1st, or 42nd date. Not to mention get-togethers, birthdays, and all types of other parties, events and the like. About the only two things that would not go well here are probably funerals and doing your taxes, and I am not too sure about your taxes. Since I am sure at least some of you reading this right now, would just love to pass an axe through them... Ummm... Your taxes. I am obviously talking about your taxes. In fact, a good friend of mine just setup an axe throwing bachelorette party. Since apparently, learning how to throw axes at your future husband is part of a healthy, and well-balanced marriage. There is a bar at the back -- which, come on -- we all saw that one coming. Since nothing says "throwing axes responsibly," than slightly overpriced beer -- by the bottle, no less. Now, the actual axe throwing is quite fun once you get the hang of it: The secret, is all in your wrists and knowing went to let go. And PSST... Remember this: "Chances are, you are waiting too long to let go." ;-) The staff seemed friendly and helpful and the venue itself is fairly bare bones, which is acceptable once you realize you want to keep things spartan in this type of setting. I cannot comment on the price since it was free for me, however I can comment that I enjoyed it and I look forward to doing it again. Thus, if not a date, then make sure you get a LOT of your friends to come out, since like bowling, it is a lot better in larger groups. read more

BATL is such a cool place to hang and get a drink, also to throw an axe or two. The instructor was very informative and keep giving us pointers on how to improve. Had a blast here and will def go back in the future. Only thing is that there is no official line up the first line instructor totally forgot about us and skipped us multiple times but we got in the middle lanes and had a good amount of time to try axe throwing. read more

I am so disappointed by BATL. We had planned a bachelorette party here months ago as it had come highly recommended by our friends in Toronto. 2 days before the event we receive an email from management checking in on our numbers, and casually mentioning that due to a recent change in law the event will not longer be BYOB (uhh what???). Of course we understand this outcome is outside their control, but it would have been appreciated if BATL had disclosed the possibility of this happening prior to us making these plans. (Have I mentioned that this is for a large group of girls traveling from all over North America to celebrate a special occasion... Oh and that it was booked months ago?) Needless to say we are out a lot of money that we used to pre order the alcohol for this event. We have also unwittingly signed up for a dry bachelorette event ... Thank you BATL for being so forthright with your information. Next time there is a law that threatens such a critical component and large appeal of your services, please disclose this pertinent piece of information. read more

The Backyard Axe Throwing League is the first and only of its kind in Toronto. Created by Matt Wilson and located in a very cool loft conversion space on Sterling Rd. B.A.T.L. is an excellent and fun way to share random hobbies with people and to socialize. The loft space is roughly 1000 plus square feet with a raised mezzaine and very high ceilings. When I told my friends that I wanted to join this league they laughed at me stating " great that is all you need is another hardcore hobby". However, I rebuffed these comments and checked it out anyway! They have several league nights where people congregate and literally throw axes at targets! B.A.T.L. now has over 100 members, both men and women from all walks of life with all skill levels. It is extremely satisfying hurling an axe through the air at a target. The league members appear to be very nice, yet there is a still a strong competitive vibe. Matt Wilson is a crazy cool cat. He is patient and takes the time with new throwers to show them proper throwing and sharpening techniques and to explain the rules. B.A.T.L. also holds events! So, you may book a bday party, bachelorette/bachelor party, work party or corporate event to mix it up! League prices are totally reasonable=) I highly recommend the Backyard Axe Throwing League! This place is wicked. You would think that beer and axe battles would be a dangerous combo... Well you're not wrong. But these guys know how to have fun and I'm not arguing with that logic. The breakdown is you need to book in advance and have a group of at least 12 people. It's $40 per person and its roughly three hours of axe throwing shenanigans. Best part? BYOB is in full effect. You get your own little area with a counter and fridge, so bring lots of food and drinks with you. This place is smoker friendly, just right outside you can spark up (and bring your beer with you! Amazing.) They teach you how to throw, you practice, and then the battles begin. Compete against your friends for the title of champion axe thrower and manliest of men. THE STAFF ARE AWESOME I want to be their friend. Seriously they made our axventure like a million times more fun just by being so inherently cool. So much fun, I wish it could last longer than it does. One tip though, it's best to keep the group as small as possible; big groups means less action for each of you. Great for birthdays, I'd even think it would make a cool bachelor party, it's just refreshing to do something so different for a change. Only complaint I had was that after my first visit I wanted to go again but it's very hard to contact BATL, your only option is to email them pretty much. read more

Huge fun. I took my team from work and we all had a blast. There is something deeply satisfying about throwing a hatchet and burying it in a wood target. The space is industrial and primitive but it works well. They have leagues but the spaces fill up fairly quickly. You can bring drinks (read alcohol) but there is nothing served on premise. Not even water. Not a big deal, but good to know going in. read more

If I could give a lower rating for this place I would. We attended the Pickering Batl Ax location for a Bachelor party with about 15 of us. First off it took us over an hour to actually start playing the game, part of that was because the staff took 20 minutes to explain the rules. I understand there is a safety issue when people are drinking and throwing sharp objects however there was no need to tell us 3 times that we would be kicked out if we broke any one of the MANY rules. It's sapped the fun out of the event before it started. Now if you haven't been there before it costs $45 for the night, $675 for our group not including beers we bought. We played 1 game and if you don't win then your out. So I threw 2 rounds of 15 Axes for a total of 30 throws......for $45!!! That's a $1.50 a toss. Absolutely ridiculous! The staff member who was leading our group was extremely combative and confrontational with us as soon as we came through the door and basically ruined the event due to her poor attitude. Obviously our $700 dollars and our future business was not important to them. I would NEVER return to this place for any event or recommend this place to anyone. We could not have been more disappointed by the staff and the way it was run. read more

Our guide Mark was awesome, funny, and made it easy. This is my very first review on Yelp, and for good reason. I have to say, prior to heading to BATL to celebrate a friend's birthday, I was unsure of how the three hours would go. Sure, I'd heard about it through friends and wondered if it was just hype. I'm super stoked to report that it exceeded all my expectations. Yes, there is axe throwing. Yes, it's BYOB. But what made it an absolute blast was the staff. They were badass, hilarious, friendly, and encouraging. I struggled with throwing in the beginning, but the staff were super positive and attentive - they suggested multiple techniques until you were comfortable. Once I got the hang out of it, it made my day and they are the first to celebrate with me. I HIGHLY recommend visiting with a big group of friends. And it there is time at the end of your three hours, I also highly recommend egging the staff on to chuck some axes. It's worth it. read more

We were in town from Chicago for 4 days in Toronto for a bachelor party.... we had a a total of 8 of us and Backyard Axe Throwing was amazing!! Matt Wilson and his staff went out of their way for us....It is located in a pretty swank wearhouse on Sterling Road....they taught us how to throw the axe while making it a special time for all of us.
