I came here with some friends late evening, around 9:00pm, for some axe throwing. We had originally reserved for 8:30 pm, but the staff were generous to let us move the reservation. Upon arrival, I found the facility very modern, clean and organized. They had several tables in the middle for dine-in. The axe throwing cages were large, each with 2 lanes and firm fence all around. It was easy go in and out of the lane and interact with friends. There also had several drinks and alcohol available at the bar/register counter. At the beginning a staff member briefed us the axe throwing process and assisted us with first few throws. Then we played about 6 rounds of games. The boards were in pretty bad condition, as they were being for a long time. Bullseye and other markings almost faded away. After that, we tried the daggers for few rounds. None of us could really stick the daggers in the board. The cost came about $36 CAD per person for about 45 minutes. Overall we had a good fun time. They staff were friendly and helpful. read more

I booked BATL for a team building event at work. Very few on our team had tried axe throwing before so I thought it would make for an even playing field. Although they have food options available, I was amazed to find out that I was able to order in the food of my choice (see review for Bosphorus). BATL set up our area for our spread and provided us with plates and utensils. Upon arrival, we were provided with comprehensive instructions on how to throw by our amazing instructor, Angel. Her enthusiasm was next level and right from the start, she had the team engaged and excited. The couple of hours we had booked flew bye and everyone had a great time. Hell yeah! I love feeling like a real man's man! Throwing axes at walls while I roar with unbridled ferocity. You think, how is throwing axes at a wall fun for 2 hours? What you don't know is it turns into a fierce competition of might and ego. I'm riding on a bit of an axe-throwing high right now. I beat out a bunch of dudes and got top 3 on our personal leaderboard and it's really getting to my head. Friends and I arrived in a sketchy commercial complex for a birthday axe throwing party. That whole area near Yorkdale is a surprise. Sketchy from the road but filled with fun little gems like BATL, archery tag places, and escape rooms. BATL was equally surprising. Small entrance, huuuuge warehouse inside decked with multiple axe throwing lanes. From start to finish, the guys here were super nice and super fun. Nate signed us in and gave us the tour. He stuck around until our coach came and then frequently checked up on us to see that we were well hydrated through their nice selection of alcoholic beverages. Francesco was our coach. Not only was he a good teacher and kept us safe and in line, he was really good at feeding off the energy of the group. My friend group dynamics include a lot of mocking, taunting, and general inappropriateness. Francesco fit right in. He called us trash and we threw better. It was nice. For about $40, we competed with each other and threw axes at a bull's eye for ~2.5 hours. It was fun, it was intense, and I was living out a lumberjack assassin fantasy. We went to their Spring open house for their free axe throwing event. The location is situated near Yorkdale Mall which I find really convenient, however their exact location was hard to find as it was tucked in those industrial area. Price is about $20 ish for an hour of axe throwing. The staffs there were extremely helpful and friendly. They told us that it started as throwing axes to targets at backyard (hence the name BACKYARD), then it became bigger and bigger til they ran out of space at the backyard so the founders decided to rent spaces and made it as the company. They taught us how to throw axes properly and even played games with it. Each stations have its own coach that will monitor you and give pointers to improve your throws. Ideal place for a bunch of friends, dates, and birthday events. Definitely will go back!!! read more

Not the best location I've been at. Sure, it's spacious and the AC is not working due to it being a giant warehouse, but it's fun anyways. I brought a group of friends for my birthday here, and as unfortunate as it is, they don't have alcohol here unlike other locations. They are still working on the license for it. But that's besides the point. The reason it lost a star is because we felt super rushed and it seemed like the instructor just wanted to get paid and wanted us out of there as soon as possible, even though we were the only ones there. A group of us had visited BATL for the first time due to a friends B-day that we were celebrating. Overall we were all extremely happy with our experience here! The staff did a great job in giving us our safety briefs and the time to practice before we got into doing some competition rounds. I'd definitely come back again! :) Some small things I'd suggest in the future though for the owner(s) to consider is (A) making a sign off of Bridgeland more visible. There's nothing really popping out to make drivers aware of what building BATL is really in. And (B) getting a liquor license (would be great to either BYOB or purchase on site). read more

Once we got there we were explained all the rules and regulation and were quickly stated on the training session. All staff members were very friendly and sociable. The place looks small from outside but they have a huge warehouse on the inside. We played about many games and let me tell you it was a blast. Two side battling each other to win for the top title...pure stress relief and team building. They also have some signs which you can take pictures. Wear flexible and easy clothes and shoes. For my 25th birthday I decided I wanted to try something new. I'm over going to the club and dropping it like it's hot. I want to throw some axes! I know sounds super dangerous especially since it's BYOB but they have many safety precautions to ensure no one looses a limb. I'm not going to lie, the first time holding an axe was a bit intimidating. Throwing an axe is not something most people can say they have done. You are basically going against what common sense tells you to do. I mean we were all taught not to run with scissors, now I am spiralling an axe towards a board. Pretty bad ass feeling if I do say so myself. Every group comes with coaches to get you started then they organize a competition with point scores and narrate with microphones. Totally worth 45 dollars a person! Each area comes with a fridge and table so I brought pop, alcohol, food and cutlery. I saw one station and they had a slow cooker plugged in. How smart! Everyone here is so nice. The staff is so friendly it makes you want to work there. The company was started by two brothers that started it in their garage I believe. They personally came up and introduced themselves and wished me happy birthday. As I walked around other staff members started wishing me happy birthday. It was truly a unique experience. It's rare to experience hospitality like that. This was definitely one of my favourite birthdays! There were a lot of people who were reluctant to try axe throwing but by the end everyone had a great time and said they would come again. read more

I came here for my work staff party not too long ago. Apparently we were the first big group at that location. It was so much fun!! The staff were so nice and helpful and really walked you through the process. They were super patient and understanding of the fact that this activity was completely foreign to some people. It was a great night and it was the best feeling ever when your throw would actually hit the target! It's also pretty cool that you're allowed to bring in food, drinks and alcohol. Great place to hang out with your friends. Although I was going to take another star off for the hefty price tag (around $45/p), the friendly staff made up for it. When you enter, you will be required to fill a waiver on an ipad. Then you will be guided to a laneway with a staff member who goes over the rules with your group. Everyone then gets a few tries at throwing the axe. Bullseye is 5pts, inside the red is 3pts and blue is 1pt...etc. When the instructional time is over, your group will get to play against each other in a round robin game. Basically, the players with the highest points goes into finals. Axe throwing may sound intimidating, but it gets much easier as you go. The staff is great in helping each person along the way. I also like how they let you bring outside food and beer. Our group was able to order pizza delivery while we were playing. AWESOME!!! Best axe throwing place ever!! The address was not confusing to find either, you just got to make sure you're all the way at the back of the plaza at 153 bridgeland. Right across yorkdale and right off the 401, so it's super convenient! It was SO much bigger than I expected, with a bunch of cages. Set up is all very nice and there's a lot of room around each cage. I've been axe-throwing before for a yelp elite event and this was SO much better, to be honest. During the yelp event, I could barely hit the log at all and the instructor, although tried to help me, were not as clear and detailed in her instructions. My instructor today, Ian, was AMAZING! OFF THE HOOK. BOMB. PERFECTION. He was super nice and corrected bits and bits of my technique until I started hitting points on every throw I made. I even made bullseye 5x in a row.. ME. OF ALL PEOPLE. Honestly, his instructional quality made my experience so much better and he didn't make me feel embarrassed before I perfected my technique (which is something I could've never imagined myself doing) and I found axe throwing very enjoyable overall and found myself craving to hit the wood more and more. They're also very precise with the points here and the measurements they make (they even have tools to measure how deep the axe is in and how close/far it is to a certain ring). At the end of the night, they switch out all the boards and draw fresh rings on it for the next day, which is awesome. I loved my experience here, and I would definitely come back by choice. The best thing is that there's a large table area for every group and their cage to hold pizza/food/drinks/alcohol! This is a 100% recommend, especially if you're new to the sport, YOU NEED TO TRY IT OUT AT BATL! read more

I unexpectedly had a lot of fun here! I didn't want to come here at first because I knew it was going to be expensive ($40 per person) and I wasn't sure how much fun I was going to have throwing an axe. The first thing I notice was how friendly, helpful and nice the staff was. All of them were easy to talk to and the service was wonderful. They first have a training session with you so they teach you how to throw the axe. Then, you start the battle round and there's actually a staff member there keeping score and giving you pointers after you've thrown your axe. Then, at the very end if there's time leftover, they let you try throwing the big axe. I lost...but I still had fun! I highly recommend anybody to give axe throwing a try! read more

Just went last night with a group of friends for a birthday. We had so much fun. The instructors there are super patient and helpful. We had Kelly who was amazing. She gave each of us individual pointers on how to improve our stances, and aim. You get a good amount of practice time before you start the tournament.I suggest going in a smaller group as you get more playing time. Our whole group (6ppl) got to try throwing the big axe for while at the end which was awesome. Two hours go by superfast because you're having a blast. Wish they had their alcohol license;that would make it even better. but i hear they're working on that. read more

This place was really fun - great for large groups. I have to say the instructors that we got were really lovely - they took the time to demonstrate proper axe throwing technique and took counting the scores really seriously! The way this works is that each person in the group gets to practice axe throwing. Than what happens is you're the competition: If you hit the axe on the various targets (and get more bullseyes), you're entered into a competition with other people from your group. From then, you compete against each other until there are two people left. It's long, but super fun. At the end, the instructors will take a group shot and ask you to "bleep" it all - it makes for a great memory. I would highly recommend this place for any group events: it's fun and rowdy and you will be surprised at how much technique there is to axe throwing!! read more

Anxious that this place would book up fast, I placed my $100 deposit for a Sunday afternoon throwing session two weeks early. It seemed like a fun experience, so I wanted to try it with a group of friends (group of 10). It's a bit tricky finding the place from the road. Just know you have to find a building with a blue roof and drive all the way inside the parking lot because BATL is at the very end. Upon entering the establishment 10 minutes early, we were greeted and asked to sign a couple waivers. You then walk to the throwing area. Turns out my group was the only group throwing that afternoon so I had no reason to be anxious. We were introduced to our instructor/supervisor Carly, who provided each of us with two throwing practice lessons/sessions. One thing I want to note is that if you are a beginner, it is good to follow what the instructors say at first, but if what they say isn't working for you, request to learn how to practice differently (i.e. ask to practice throwing with one hand). The way the instructor throws won't work for everyone, I've noticed. After the two practice rounds, my group started an internal tournament. There are 3 throwing sessions. Each throwing session you are BATLing your opponent 1-on-1 to see who gets the higher amount of points. You get 10 throws per throwing session. I lost all of mine, but still had a lot of fun! In the end, out of the 4 people who had the highest amount of points, only 1 of them was throwing it the way that Carly taught us all to throw. The winner of our tournament was someone who never axe-threw before and won by throwing the axe with one hand! I had a blast and when it came to payments, I asked for my $100 to pay for myself ($42.86+tax) and to be reduced for the other 9 throwers so that they each had a small fee taken off their final payment. AWESOME!! We came here for my boyfriend's surprise birthday and we all had a FANTASTIC time! The staff were so friendly and incredibly well organized in not only the planning phase, but also during the actual event. Our guests arrived before we did and the staff got everyone throwing before we arrived which was awesome! There is plenty of space to bring food and drinks- there is even a fridge to put your beer in! I was skeptical about the whole BYOB thing but you have to keep in mind that you are only there for three hours (so you're not drinking tooooooo much) and they have designated space for the axe throwing so everyone stays safe. The brand new North York location was very clean too (including the bathrooms) We had a large group and everyone had the chance to throw axes, though no one in our group got to throw 'the big axe.' Near the end of the event we had a tournament... this was THE most fun thing ever even though I personally sucked at it. I just really want to thank the great staff at the North York BATL location for doing such an awesome job with our party! I hosted my birthday event here a few weeks ago, and had an absolutely fantastic time! I came with a group of about 20 people and booked about a month in advance, which I would highly recommend doing, because spots fill up fast. All the staff here are super professional and adept at handling events with large groups and ensuring everyone has fun. For most of the people in my group, it was our first time throwing axes, so the staff gave us tips and pointers and also gave us ample time to practice before starting the "friendly competition." Once you've booked the place, you don't even have to worry about anything else. They arrange everything for you, and pair people up randomly for the competition, so you don't even have to worry about a thing, and everyone gets a chance to play like 4 rounds during the round robin part. For some reason they left my friend's name off the list and didn't realize until it came time for her to pay - but they were super nice about the mistake and still let her play like 4 rounds in a row, so she got her money's worth. Paying was also a very smooth process considering the large group. The staff there really try to make the experience fun for everyone and don't openly judge you, even if you suck like me. They always try to be encouraging, and will celebrate with you when you get a really good throw in. Overall a really cool, chill group of people, but at the same time they know how to do their job and make sure everyone is having a safe time. Even though I was embarrassingly awful at the actual axe throwing, I still had a ton of fun and would love to come back again! It's an awesome, low-key, stress-relieving activity, and will make you feel super badass :D They have great facilities, so you can bring your own food and drinks, and your party area comes equipped with a fridge and counter. This was SO much fun! Me and my friends had a great time at BATL and the staff is amazing. Ian, who I was e-mailing prior to the event came over and made sure we had everything we needed. They even made sure we had a TV in our section to watch the jays game! Two of my friends who could only stay for about 20 minutes of the tournament, paid in full but then a staff member came up to us after with a full refund saying they didn't have to pay since they didn't experience the full tournament. Wanted to do something different for a Bachelor Party, enjoyed our time here, but what spoiled it was the blonde girl at the reception desk. We had a few brothers cancel last second due to a family emergency so ended up being below the "eight person minimum" they ask for. It was clear the way that this girl was getting us signed in she knew it was a bachelor party and that I was the organizer, but instead of talking to me quietly off to the side about the shortage of people and still needing to pay a minimum fee she made not one, not two, not three, but FOUR statements about having to check this with the manager. This girl needs to either be fired or coached on how to handle situations with tact. When I took her aside after the others had gone in and explained the situation, she still made a big deal about having to check with the manager. By this time I was over-the-top angry as instead of trying to be constructive she talked down to me. Half way through our time tossing the axes she came to me and said she talked to the manager and the 5 of us need to be charged for 8 as a minimum. I told her, "It's just about needing to pay more? Why didn't you just tell me privately you charge a minimum of 8 instead of all this drama?" She had nothing to say except the ranting speech (now for the sixth time) and walked away. This wasn't about the money for me, it was about making an un-needed scene in front of the groom-to-be and his guests, and embarrassing me instead of using some customer service skills and speaking to the organizer about it privately. She had that information on our arrival it was clear, but absolutely ZERO customer service skills in this regard. If you're going to have someone run the front desk for people to arrive at, they ought to be able to work with a situation.
