It was my first time coming here with a group of friends. We were able to bring our own pizza, but they had a bar there to order drinks. The staff were absolutely fantastic. They gave us good tips on throwing, and just made the overall experience memorable. This was a really good time - even if you're a first timer. I wouldn't hesitate to come here again. It is a bit hard to find. However, the entrance is at the very end of the small parking lot. read more

I've been to a few BATL facilities around North America just traveling and ended up at one. I always have a good time, win or lose and Portlands is no different. I Hosted a bachelor party of 8 people for my buddy here and the group loved it. We booked the 1.5hr tournament style session and it felt like enough time to learn and get the hang of throwing axes. With guidance from the coach you can get pretty good. They have good craft beer on deck and you can drink while you play. The tournament style includes a trophy to compete for that you can take home with you and gloat to your friends with. Great idea for any occasion, maybe even a wedding lol. read more

We had a team building event and the team voted for this place (including me). However I had very low expectations from this. How much fun can axe throwing be? We registered and were given an overview of how to hold the axe, throw and what to do and more importantly not to do. We had enough practice. The whole experience was as I had assumed. Then we split up in two teams (about 26 of us) and the round robin started. And by the time the finals were done, we were loud, all the adrenaline was pumping like crazy. Although I did not reach the finals, the whole experience was unbelievable. The staff were in it with us as well. They were so helpful and kind. The game and staff were the game changer. The washrooms are not so great, but all right. They let us cater the food and soft drinks, which came in handy. read more

What's more fun that dart throwing?? Why AXE throwing, of course. And leave it to the Canadians to come up with this fun take on a team sport! Wait. Are you telling me you never heard of AXE Throwing? Well you have to get yourself to Canada, my American friends, as this is the most fun you'll have sober! (yeah, the liquor commission there ruled that it might be dangerous to drink and throw axes so they banned the BYOB policy that used to be in place . . .go figure!) This location, there are 6 more I think, is located by the wharf and is in what used to be an old ammunitions warehouse. Picture tall ceilings, wood walls, not fancy but very functional. The logo for BATL will guide you to the door as it really looks like you have come to an abandoned building as signage is at a minimum. You check in at a table where you will get a wrist band, pay your $40 for 3 hours of good fun, and be directed to your area. The staff here is super organized and very friendly and nice! There are a few practice rounds and if you listen to the instructors, you will be throwing like a pro in no time. The mini hatchets are used for the regular rounds, but wait til you see what happens where there is a tie. They haul out a full sized axe, cordon off the area and then you pitch the full sized axe toward the target. Did I saw this was crazy fun??? Our group had about 25 people in it and everyone got to compete 3 times at a minimum, more if you made it to the finals. There is also a refrigerator by your area so bring soft drinks, water and snacks as axe throwing works up an appetite. Too soon our axe throwing time was done (takes about 3 hours) But for this axe throwing virgin, the fun lived on in my memory AND my sore arm and core muscles for a few days to follow. AXE THROWING? In a warehouse in downtown Toronto....cherry beach area. It is dark and cold inside. The guides/coaches were great! They were friendly and funny and encouraging. The axes in regular competition are small and not too heavy. For tie breakers they bring a bigger and heavier axe. Wear closed toe shoes and wear a sweater ( it's cold in there). There are washrooms, a bar to purchase drinks and a water dispenser on site. They also sell shirts and stuff. Fun activity and great team competition. They hold regular classes too. read more

Went for a birthday party and had a blast! With tax, it costs about $45 and you get 2 hours total. The first hour was chill, just getting training from the instructors and practicing throws, but the second hour is when it gets interesting! They start a round robin and host your scores on the TV screen beside each section. After you play about 3 games each (depending on the size of your group), it goes into a final tournament to determine the ultimate winner. Overall had a great time! But tbh, to me, it's a one time experience, but definitely worth trying out if you've never been! read more

So, I get hired at a new company, and the first thing they want to do is fly me out to throw axes with them. What could go wrong? Well nothing did, apparently; unless you count me being a horrible at handling the axe because I hadn't slept in 48 hours (long plane ride with two stops from California). We had two trainers, and it was like they were playing good cop, bad cop. One was super chill and just making chit chat while helping us out with our technique. The other seemed to think he was forming us into an elite team and we were all in the dark ages. It was hilarious! I am unsure of the cost to throw here, since I didn't pay. That would probably have affected my rating. Overall though, I am a sucker for unique, new experiences, so this hit my funny bone in an awesome way. I've been telling people about it back in California, and it seems to have sparked an interest in us maybe checking out something similar, locally. Also, just an FYI, axe throwing isn't too hard if your main goal is just to get it to stick into the wood. If you actually want to hit the targets, well, that definitely takes some strategy. BATL wouldn't be a bad choice for a beginner to try their luck at axe throwing. read more

Went into this with no expectations. Very spacious place which is nice especially with weapons being chucked around. Instructor and score keeper was very informative and helpful. Had a surprisingly great time learning how to throw axes just incase there's ever a zombie apocalypse. Definitely a lot more difficult to get the accuracy down. read more

We came here for my friend's bachelorette party. We made reservation ahead of time for our group. We got 2 lanes and a nice couch for 2-2.5hours. It was a fun group activity; very interactive, engaging and competitive! They only downside is it's in warehouse and no AC. We were melting away on a hot hot afternoon. They have all fans running. Upside was they offered ice water at the counter. Water jugs were quickly refilled by staff with generous amount of ice!!! read more

We celebrated the earlier portion of a friend's bachelor party here. It was loads of fun. It takes a while to get the hang of throwing the ax, but you get several practice runs. You throw at targets, the closer to the bull's eye, the higher the score. Sounds easy, in theory. Each individual then goes on several head-to-head competitions against opponents and a judge keeps score. By the end of the night, a winner is declared. They allow outside food and beer, and provide a fridge to store it. You might think that beer and axes don't mix, and you'd be absolutely right. But they make sure that you follow safety rules. Don't think this place is for men only. There were large groups of ladies as well. read more

Came here for my husband's birthday. The staff was very friendly and professional. Patiently walked us through instructions and joked around with us throughout the night. We arrived almost an hour late and they were kind enough to let us finish the game. Everyone had a great time, many of our friends said they had more fun than they anticipated. So much fun! I went here for my roommate's birthday and I had thrown axes before (once... at a giant tree stump), but it wasn't nearly as fun as it was at BATL. Our instructors (Raegan and I forgot the other guy's name!) were so helpful! They gave us tons of coaching on how to properly throw the axes. After we all had a chance to learn how to throw them, we entered into a round-robin competition that was SO MUCH FUN. Friendly competition is the best. It was so exciting watching the final two (even more so because it was the birthday boy versus his friend). I highly recommend coming here for a birthday. There were only 10 of us so it ended up being $54 each but it's cheaper when there are more people. My abs were sore the next day too, so it's like a 2 in 1 since you get a workout while having a blast. I want to throw the big axe next time... #hooked. read more

This place was insanely fun. We came on a Saturday evening for a birthday party. We spent about two hours here with a coach the entire time. They teach you how to throw and everyone has a few rounds to practice. After everyone is warmed up, the coach arranges a tournament. Similar to a bowling alley, all of the scores are shown a tv over the two lanes. Although this place would seem intimidating for some when walking in, the staff are incredibly kind, helpful, hilarious and also keep everyone's safety top of mind. Also the axe throwing is surprisingly easy to get the hang of. I highly recommend the party of 6+ so you have the full two hours to enjoy ! My only complaint is the washrooms need a little extra attention. Anyway, I would definitely return! read more

Went here last week for a friends' birthday and am so happy I finally make it. Firstly, can you really go wrong with a place that lets you throw FREAKING AXES!?!? No, no you can't. The space is tucked in the port lands area which is basically the middle of nowhere Toronto, or a $10 Uber from downtown. Upon entry you feel like you've been transported back in time as it sits nestled in a really cool old factory. Upon arrival they do a little demo to teach you how to throw an axe, since this isn't really something most people do every day. Once everyone is brought up to speed they then let you play a tourney with your group where you batl for bragging rights. There is a point scoring system and if two people and up tied they get to throw THE BIG AXE. Eventually a winner is crowned, you get to take pictures giving the staff the finger and you are on your way. All of the staff were super friendly and awesome instructors. They helped make the event even more fun. We went on a Thursday which was a bit cheaper at $35/pp but I think it is regularly $45/pp. Perfect for corporate team building, birthday parties or a night out with friends. They also have leagues and if it were closer to my house I'd likely join one. If you are considering going, don't axe questions and just go. read more

This review is probably overdue but we went two years ago to this place. We had a party of about 20 people and we had a blast. At that time we were allowed to bring our own alcohol such as canned beers or boxed wines. The whole event took about two and a half hours from training on how to throw an axe using both of your hands and how to be safe throughout the event so you chop off any fingers. Next thing you know you're in a tournament with your buddies and you're fighting for the championship. It was a lot of fun because you could drink while you're watching and it actually got quite intense. If there's a tie, which I did get into, you get to throw the big axe, which was awesome! The coaches and trainers there at were very strict to keep everyone safe but they also were there to instruct us on how to get better and improve our technique . axes aren't heavy and if you get used to it, you can doing it with one hand. Overall, it was a lot of fun there but I recently heard that they changed the policy on the alcohol so you are no longer allowed to bring alcohol. If I had to write this review again I would not give it 5 stars because the BYOB policy give it a star just by itself. Beer and axes are a great combination! It is still a great place to celebrate a party with your friends for a special occasions such as a birthday though. read more

I've made no secrets about my self-proclaimed lumberjack roots. Maybe it's the beard, the excessive flannel, or maybe the tiny Blue Bull that for the life of me I cannot get to piss-off and leave me alone already - I DON'T HAVE ANY FOOD OK?? So I'm not saying that my lineage is somehow connected to Paul Bunyan but my middle name IS Paul so..... you be the judge. k? I did not visit BATL for a casual Saturday afternoon, no, instead it was my Bachelor party and as part of the 15 hours of planned (and unplanned) festivities, a trip to BATL was included. I'd been to the others but BATL apparently is the originators of the concept in Toronto and you can tell why. BATL is a little off the beaten path, on the east-end of the city, just around the portlands, and like most of the Axe throwing facilities, creatively hidden around the rear of another building. As for the building, it's awesome! Old, kinda like a repurposed factory setting with cages set up in every corner for throwing axes. The best part aside from the activity was the fact that they are licensed and serve tall cans of beer (a large selection) and allow you to order your own food in should you need energy (or sobering substances to get you through the day). For larger groups such as a Bachelor party, they give everyone about 30 minutes of free throwing and instruction before breaking everyone, going into the rules and starting an all-out Tournament. I won't go into details but I did not win, I may have been in the woods lumber-jacking off all day so maybe I was tired, my arms were sore... whatever! The X-factor here are the staff, friendly, blunt, no-bs and hilarious. They totally made my special day an extra level of special and I'd happily come back here in a heart beat! I love the extra intensity when they add in a larger axe They take an awesome photo of everybody after which us just icing on the cake. (Shudders) It's like the guys from Epic Mealtime ditched YouTube and decided to teach axe throwing. It looked violent, and I felt illegitimately violent. I have the heart and soul of Ned Flanders as a teammate :3 So I wasn't keen on the activity at first but my annoyance with shouting bearded trainers got the better of me and it became an exercise in blocking it out and aiming at an unmoving spot. Also, seems like you have to let go earlier than throwing in pitching or basketball. Fortunately, they sell booze and it's allowed on the spectator zone. The trainers (aka the hollering men) are very good at keeping people out of range of neighbouring folks who are throwing axes. It's more like 4 stars for coaching and 2 for ambience type of place. They gave great instruction but I'm really not into this battle-to-the-death mentality. So I survived. I'd much rather not have 2 huge men holler at me on my third day on a new job, but I'm sure my company wasn't aware of that when they planned it. We came here for a corporate team building event, and everyone had so much fun! Brian and Reagan were our coaches and they were so funny and engaging. It was nice to have a separate, designated space for our group. We were shown how to throw and hold axes, and then had a fun tournament. There were screens to display score. We got a trophy and shirts for winners. The bar had a nice collection of beers and soft drinks (no food). Only downside was it was quite hot inside the warehouse on a summer evening! read more

Celebrated a buddy's 40th here a couple weeks ago and had an amazing time. Bring your own booze (wine/beer) in cans and plastic and store in your own fridge. Order in pizza or bring take-out. The staff are down-to-earth people who had a great sense of humour and patience. They stick with you through the whole experience, teaching you the basics (harder than you think) and then running a tournament for your group. Seems counter-intuitive to drink and throw axes but the environment and staff make sure it's all very safe. Our three hour session flew by and I can't wait to go back. read more

Ever thought to yourself and come up with the idea to throw axes? Yeah most people don't, but I'm not most people. After arriving in Canada after a long bus ride. The only natural thing for a girl to do is blow off some steam. So I did a search and found an axe throwing location. We made our way there and we were greeted by super awesome friendly spectacular wonderful people. It was our first time axe throwing, and they were very eager to give us newbies, a tutorial we'd never forget. Our night was full of laughs, jokes, and booze. Of course axe throwing as well! Eventually I got over holding back. Seriously don't hold back, it won't stick to anything. The axe is not going to bounce back and hit you that easily either. You are told to throw at a safe distance. Coming here was an excellent decision and we'd come back anytime. If you are curious, just do it! We had a great team building here in August that we've book another event for this month. The atmosphere was great, drinks and axe throwing looked a bit scary, but we had Sara H. teaching us the correct techniques. Sara had awesome energy that really got our team into the groove!! What an amazing experience! My summer baseball team needed a winter activity, and axe toss was great! The instructors were fun, and got us really raved up for the tournament! They were great teachers and supportive! My favourite part (being an A type control freak and all)is that they were so organized! They set up an every man for the self tournament (with iPads for tracking) that went so smoothly! 2+ hours of fun, and you lean a new skill! read more

I visited here with a bachelorette. We had a section with two axe target boards. It ended up lasting 2.5 hours. There were high tables to lean on or sit at. We were assigned a worker to help us with a full tournament style game. Our guy was super funny and created a competitive atmosphere which was awesome to get us chatting with each other. It was very structured which was great. We started with a round robin and then went into the tournament. They played great music and had great attitudes. Great selection of drinks at the bar. There are 2 locations - I went to the one on Villiers St. We had a group of about 13 (groups over 12 are $40 incl tax...not sure the price of a smaller group). You can bring your own drinks (no bottles) and food as they have fridges at each area. We booked for 3 hours and it was an amazing time! They have 2 guys (Stefan and unfortunately I have forgotten the name of the other guy we had) explain to us how to throw the axe (you didn't think there WASN'T a technique involved in did ya??) and let you get some practice throws in before the round robin competition starts. They are very good about giving instructions on how you can improve your aim. Such a fun way to spend a day with friends. Next time I might just bring in a pic of a person I don't like to put on the target - might help me get more bullseyes that way! read more

This place is wicked. You would think that beer and axe battles would be a dangerous combo... Well you're not wrong. But these guys know how to have fun and I'm not arguing with that logic. The breakdown is you need to book in advance and have a group of at least 12 people. It's $40 per person and its roughly three hours of axe throwing shenanigans. Best part? BYOB is in full effect. You get your own little area with a counter and fridge, so bring lots of food and drinks with you. This place is smoker friendly, just right outside you can spark up (and bring your beer with you! Amazing.) They teach you how to throw, you practice, and then the battles begin. Compete against your friends for the title of champion axe thrower and manliest of men. THE STAFF ARE AWESOME I want to be their friend. Seriously they made our axventure like a million times more fun just by being so inherently cool. So much fun, I wish it could last longer than it does. One tip though, it's best to keep the group as small as possible; big groups means less action for each of you. Great for birthdays, I'd even think it would make a cool bachelor party, it's just refreshing to do something so different for a change.
