Imagine a Firkin pub. Imagine it less tacky. Imagine it grimier. Imagine it smaller. You are imagining Rails & Ales.

The service does need to be improved! The servers have some favourite customers and dont pay attention to other people.

Everyone, makes you feel so welcome. The Friday Night Blues jam with Mike and Robin and Juliette is just amazing. What great musicians, and so welcoming to all other musicians who turn up to play. I help run a huge music festival "Govfest" check out Govfest.ca and we have been holding our Battle of the Bands at Black Swan for several years. The sound run by Kevin is awesome and the support provided by John and Bill makes it so easy for anyone wishing to host a night of great live music. Black Swan has so much history and it will always be my bar to go to for a night of great company and great music. Dorothy Currie

It's also pretty reasonable so and right Downtown Toronto, so you gotta like that. If you're catching a afternoon matinee at the Scotiabank movie theater, it steps away, so pretty handy. The server was really fantastic. Very knowledgeable, and just really friendly and personable. Highly recommend for the service alone. There's a variety of booze and you can even sit at the bar if you want. So it seems to be quite spacious. You can also reserve an Open table. We had a big breakfast with French toast. I found the bacon could've been a little more well cooked for me. Especially since I asked for it being crispy, but it was OK. The rest was pretty good like I said a standard breakfast. And they did leave us alone to kind of have a nice chat . Getting there. I know there are parking garages nearby including one right next to the Scotiabank Theatre. Otherwise, there's TTC that will get you close by. It's located on the SE corner of Richmond and Peter.

Ambiance - 4/5: similar to most sports bar, it's dim and loud with a lot of sports games on tv. They had a lot of reservations so the tables were split off for our small reservation. It felt a little tight. There seems to be 2 levels of seating. Service - 3.75/5: we got there early but they were nice enough to seat us early. The host sweetly pulled out my seat for me. It took us awhile to decide what to order but the server was patient with us. He checked in on us a few times. Maybe because the tables are tight, servers kept knocking into my chair seving other patrons and my seat is all the way into the table. Food - 3.5/5: I appreciate that the menu gives little historical moments that happened over the years. we ordered: Spinach dip - comes with chips and pita. Some of the chips were heavily seasoned. The pita is soft but doesnt really absorb much of the spinach dip. The dip itself is light in flavor. I prefer the chips over the pita Steak frites - we ordered medium rare and they got the cook right. The steak knife is very bendy. It should have been a AAA striploin but for some reason it felt tough and was hard to cut through. The charcoal grill marks made the exterior too burnt, giving it a bitterness to the steak. It came with an arugula salad and a very genorous portion of fries. Everything was seasoned well. The arugula salad and the chimmichuri on the steak had a tartness to it which added some brightness to the dish. I typically don't use ketchup but I needed it to help me with the fries. I could not finish the fries Sundae - there's probably only 1 scoop worth of vanilla ice cream. It comes in a cup with whipped cream and berries. Overall: 3.75/5 - If we come back, I might try other food items.

We absolutely love this place. It's the perfect sports bar: an insane number of gigantic TVs, all showing different games, high-energy vibes, and consistently great service. Food-wise, we ALWAYS get the Garlic Knots; they're our absolute favourite. We've never had a bad menu item here, and the drinks are always solid. One important tip: I highly recommend booking in advance, especially on any sort of game day. This place fills up fast, and for good reason. Rainhard was the Brewery for the latest Takeover, and as I did there last Sat. I chose 4 beers and 1 cider for my flight, 3 beers of which were leftover from the Event. Like last Sat. we were there for more than 2 hours and again the venue gradually became quite crowded throughout. This time one of my friends walked over to the Café side of The Only a couple of times after we all had finished our flights and bought 2 non-alcoholic caffeine drinks from the fridge there - which offers various other beverages as well - and shared both with me and our other friend to help us sober up. Both drinks were the same brand (Guayaki organic Yerba Mate) but 2 different flavours: Peach and Berry Lemonade. Both were quite nice but I liked the latter more. The Only never fails to impress me and I always have a most enjoyable time there whenever I visit; this occasion was certainly no exception.

Over a dozen visits…read morein total, I've typically been there after the café section had closed, so this reflects my experience of the main bar area. The bar itself has a distinctive atmosphere with a very eclectic crowd. The real strength of the place is the beer selection, which is excellent and easily among the better offerings in the city for variety. Service at the main bar, however, has been inconsistent across visits. When it's quieter, I've generally had good interactions, and there have been positive experiences. That said, during my most recent visit in January 2026, a bartender raised their voice at me, which I found disrespectful and it made the experience uncomfortable. Earlier that same evening, I also had positive interactions with a different bartender working the café side, who makes excellent cocktails, which made the contrast in service more noticeable. While I understand that hospitality environments can get busy and stressful, I don't believe that justifies speaking to customers that way. A basic level of respect should be consistent at all times. Because of this experience, I don't plan to return. It's unfortunate, as the beer selection and drinks overall are genuinely strong.
