I would like it every day but my doctor would probably have some words for me if I did. So when I actually do get ice cream, I want the best. They have an assortment of interesting flavors to choose from. The staff is more than happy to offer you samples so you can pick your favorite, but always stick to my go-to flavors, which never disappoint. First is one of their original flavors, Eureka Lemon and Marionberries. It tastes like Italy in your mouth. It's sweet and light from the ice cream base but also tart and flavorful from the lemon and marionberry notes. My second flavor, and probably my number one if I had to choose, is their coffee ice cream. When I tell you, I crave this stuff, I mean it! I've had plenty of coffee ice creams in my day but this one is perfection. It has a strong coffee flavor that isn't overpowered by the sweetness and it's got little specks of coffee grind in it which is like a surprise for the palate. You wouldn't think these two flavors go well together, but they really do! I always get myself a double scoop (which is actually four scoops). So if you order a double you can actually get four different flavors. I always get it in a cup with a sugar cone on top. It's the perfect treat. They also offer some baked goods like brownies where you make sundaes with them. And while I normally think a brownie would enhance the ice cream experience, here I believe the ice cream is the star and you shouldn't ruin it! Now on to the negatives, and there aren't many. It's on the more expensive side for ice cream. But again, you are getting a premium quality product and I personally don't mind paying a little more for something I feel reflects the value. And while the ice cream here is the best, the parking is not the best. You can get lucky and find metered street parking but because there are so many popular businesses on this strip, it's usually pretty crowded. If you are willing to walk a little bit, you can usually find parking in the neighborhood behind the businesses. Or, and I didn't tell you this, you can park in the large Von's parking lot on the other side of Laurel Canyon and take the short walk over. That's actually probably the best option to get that exercise in before devouring your ice cream anyway!

The shop is located on the corner of Griffith Park and Hyperion specifically within Merrill Plaza. Other tenants in the plaza are Meze, Jersey Mike's, and Postalworks. There's a private parking lot with tight spaces and I got nervous thinking a car was going to hit me as they were backing up. Magpies is a small softserve shop with no seating inside except for a standup slate of wood to eat on. There are two outdoor benches you can sit on and eat your desserts. It's bright inside the store; there's an Andy Warhol inspired art piece showing a variety of softserve pie slices; a large piece of artwork hangs on one of the walls with the business name in neon and softserve ice cream cones depicted in what looks like graffiti; and the register counter and workspace island have a colorful mosaic design. The gentleman behind the counter and who I believe was his female manager had a positive disposition and provided friendly customer service. When I perused their menu, I knew that I was going to order their softserve, but there were 8 flavors and I couldn't tell from the name of the flavor whether I wanted to order it. I asked the gentleman if I could taste several of their flavors. I asked to taste date shake, corn almond, malted milk shake, and sweet cream. After I tried my third flavor, the gentleman politely said that they only allow two samples per customer. I honestly don't feel that's a smart business restriction because customers can't tell from what's listed on their menu what a flavor tastes like. I was slightly taken aback when he mentioned this restriction to me, but he allowed me to sample more flavors stating that he didn't tell me ahead of time about this restriction. I've been to Salt and Straw, Baskin Robbins, and other ice cream shops and not once did they tell me there was a limit to the samples I requested. After my samples, I decided on a regular cup that comes with two flavors and I selected corn almond and sweet cream with toasted almonds as a topping for an additional charge. The corn almond tasted like Frosted Flakes and the sweet cream combined well together. They were both creamy, luscious, and the toasted almonds added texture to what was already a delightful dessert. I thought both flavors were really tasty. For the health conscious, some of the softserve flavors are vegan and gluten free. My daughter has not steered us wrong with her restaurant choices and tonight was no exception. Her choice of Magpies Softserve for dessert was a Mag-nificent selection and I'd love to try their nutter butter softserve pie the next time we visit.
