As part of our mini vacay, we decided to spend time with our Baby Girl and since we had eaten dinner, she planned for us to grab dessert somewhere. Prior to us meeting up with her, I requested that the place she takes us to has to have ice cream. She took us to Magpies Softserve and besides satisfying my request for ice cream, Magpies also serves delicious softserve pies. The softserve desserts here are en fuego and customer service was friendly and positive, but space to lounge is minimal and the two softserve sample per person is untenable. Magpies is located in Silver Lake Los Angeles specifically on the road that leads to Griffith Park Observatory. If you finished a workout at the Observatory, driving down to Magpies would be a great reward especially if it's a warm Los Angeles day. The shop is located on the corner of Griffith Park and Hyperion specifically within Merrill Plaza. Other tenants in the plaza are Meze, Jersey Mike's, and Postalworks. There's a private parking lot with tight spaces and I got nervous thinking a car was going to hit me as they were backing up. Magpies is a small softserve shop with no seating inside except for a standup slate of wood to eat on. There are two outdoor benches you can sit on and eat your desserts. It's bright inside the store; there's an Andy Warhol inspired art piece showing a variety of softserve pie slices; a large piece of artwork hangs on one of the walls with the business name in neon and softserve ice cream cones depicted in what looks like graffiti; and the register counter and workspace island have a colorful mosaic design. The gentleman behind the counter and who I believe was his female manager had a positive disposition and provided friendly customer service. When I perused their menu, I knew that I was going to order their softserve, but there were 8 flavors and I couldn't tell from the name of the flavor whether I wanted to order it. I asked the gentleman if I could taste several of their flavors. I asked to taste date shake, corn almond, malted milk shake, and sweet cream. After I tried my third flavor, the gentleman politely said that they only allow two samples per customer. I honestly don't feel that's a smart business restriction because customers can't tell from what's listed on their menu what a flavor tastes like. I was slightly taken aback when he mentioned this restriction to me, but he allowed me to sample more flavors stating that he didn't tell me ahead of time about this restriction. I've been to Salt and Straw, Baskin Robbins, and other ice cream shops and not once did they tell me there was a limit to the samples I requested. After my samples, I decided on a regular cup that comes with two flavors and I selected corn almond and sweet cream with toasted almonds as a topping for an additional charge. The corn almond tasted like Frosted Flakes and the sweet cream combined well together. They were both creamy, luscious, and the toasted almonds added texture to what was already a delightful dessert. I thought both flavors were really tasty. For the health conscious, some of the softserve flavors are vegan and gluten free. My daughter has not steered us wrong with her restaurant choices and tonight was no exception. Her choice of Magpies Softserve for dessert was a Mag-nificent selection and I'd love to try their nutter butter softserve pie the next time we visit. read more

It was dessert o'clock for my wife and I when one of us (her) really wanted some soft serve ice cream. We turned to the yelp machine and Magpies soft serve was at the top of the list! We headed to this location which I must say, has such an awful parking lot but so does so many other things in this city. After struggling to find a spot, we finally got lucky and headed into this small ice cream parlor. The menu here isn't massive, but offers a decent size soft serve selection as well as a big selection of pies. I'm a simple man, so i stuck with a soft serve cone with two flavours, those being the malted milk chocolate and the cookie butter. The whole experience was super quick and before you know it, we were seated at a bunch outside eating some ice cream. Both flavours tasted good, although I honestly couldn't really tell the difference between the two of them which I started. The ice cream itself was tasty, the cone was good, and I finished my cone with a smile on my face (before also finishing my wife's corn almond ice cream which was solid, but not a flavour for me). Overall, Magpies Softserve scratched that soft serve itch that seems harder and harder to scratch these days. The location wasn't the best with the parking, but that's LA for you. I don't typically love softserve, but it's hard to find great vegan versions and Magpies specializes in non-dairy offerings. They also have some nut-free and gluten-free options as well). Most nights they have 2 dairy flavors available, but it definitely skews vegan. Thank you! Let me offer a tip: sample a bunch of softserve flavors at every visit and store your thoughts in the memory bank because you MUST ORDER THE PIES. This is why I come here. They are so damn good, but you need to know which flavors you like the most to make ordering the correct slice easier. So remember: research is critical. They currently have an espresso pie that is epic. If you're having trouble deciding, ask them to steer you towards flavors that feature more yogurt than whipped cream. I find that the ones that are heavier on the cream layer have less flavor and don't hit as hard. Remember to wait a few minutes for them to soften up a little. They don't come cheap, but desserts have sky rocketed in price lately, so it's not so crazy to pay $12 for a slice of pie that should feed 2.
