We dined at Basil's to celebrate our 1st date 22 years ago at this restaurant when it was Lorenzo's. Different name but the ambiance is the same, the service and food still very good. Elvia greeted us warmly and showed us to a reserved table with a beautiful flower arrangement to make it special. The menu was printed special with "Happy Anniversary." Our server was Nicholas who we came to find out has been at the restaurant for 25 years, before our 1st date. We chatted about people we knew years ago. Nicolas provided attentive great service. He brought us complimentary champagne in recognition of our celebration, too. My husband ordered the baklava old fashioned, which was a tasty cocktail. Need to get that for myself next time. We shared the grilled octopus appetizer, which was a large tentacle perfectly grilled on a bed of arugula. So good. We each had a bowl of the avegolemono soup next. My favorite! My only complaint is that I can never enjoy the bread as it's sesame seed crusted. I really wish they would offer the same bread without the seeds as an alternative. It's the only negative as I can't do nuts/seeds. For dinner, we each had the Mediterranean Combo. I had the petite lamb kebobs and lamb meatballs with Greek potatoes. The kabobs were seasoned well but cooked too well done for me. I like lamb cooked medium rare, but they still were delish. The meatballs were amazing and the Greek potatoes were lemony good. My husband enjoyed his combo of dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) and spanakopita (spinach pie) with Greek potatoes. To end the meal we shared the Galaktobouriko, a baked orange custard in phyllo dough. Oh yum! We had such a wonderful evening. Basil's always makes it special for us and we never miss going on February 1st of every year. I made sure to let Elvia know just how much their efforts meant to us. We went to Basil's last month to celebrate my husband's birthday. We very much wanted to like the place, but food/drink wise, we were less than impressed. For drinks - I started with the Mavrodaphne Sweet Red. The waiter forewarned me that it was very sweet, but I thought "how sweet could it be - especially since I like sweet." I was wrong - it was very very sweet - more like an after dinner port. I quickly switched to a normal red wine. For a starter - we got the grilled octopus and really enjoyed it. It was the best part of our meal. For entrees - I ordered petite lamb kabob platter - only to find out during our appetizer that they were out of the lamb kabob. I then switched to the Athenian Skirt Steak - ordered medium - and my husband got the Lamb Mac and Cheese. My steak arrived well done+ so it was quite chewy and lacked flavor. The Mac and Cheese was very cheesy. Since it was my husband's birthday - we ordered the baklava sundae. That too was disppointing - I would say it was vanilla ice cream with honey and nuts. Nothing great at all that I couldn't have just made easily at home. Overall - not a great meal and would not be back. read more

Great attitude and although there was a mistake made with our order, he fixed it and was super apologetic. The calamari was good, not great, but decent. We tried the taramousalata and it was also just okay, a little too tart and pink, which was kind of off putting. I was able to order the zucchini chips with skordalia that I had seen in help even though it wasn't on the menu. Like I said, our waiter was very accommodating. The chips were good, the skordalia was super garlicky mashed potatoes that could have used some salt and acid. We split the skirt steak and I had asked for the grilled veg to be substituted with Lima beans. We got to try both because they forgot about the substitution, then brought the beans a little later. We should have stuck with the grilled vegetables. The Lima beans were beautiful, but really needed salt. Overall, atmosphere was great, restaurant was clean and the waitstaff was very pleasant. The food needs salt and other seasoning adjustments, and it would be perfect. read more

Basil's is just okay. You'll get huge portions of mostly flavorless food. We tried Basil's Chips (thinly sliced zucchini, deep fried and served with your choice of skordalia or tzatziki - $14). Nice texture, but not much flavor. For dinner, I had the Grilled Lemon Chicken (bone in, half chicken with olive oil, lemon, garlic served over sautéed spinach garnish with a side of roasted potatoes - $26). I tasted the lemon, but not much else. It needed seasoning in a bad, bad way. I tried two cocktails and both were awful. The Fall Sangria and Fall Fashioned tasted like they were thrown together without anyone sampling the finished product. I didn't hate Basil's, it just wasn't my cup of tea. If someone suggested a return visit, I'd probably urge an alternative. read more

I had passed the restaurant on many occasions, but hadn't dined there before. On my visit, we were part of a group of 21 couples, dining on a fixed menu (with 5 entree choices). The service was great! Drink and entree orders were taken as the soft bread w/sesame seeds was set out. The appetizer of saganaki was then served... really good! Entrees arrived in a timely manner. I had the Mediterranean pasta, which had artichokes, kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes...amazing!!! Everything was so good! The olive oil used in the dish and the sun-dried tomatoes had more flavor that anything I've ever used at home. Hubby ordereed the chicken kabobs and commented that the chicken was very tender. The lamb meatball dish that others had was abundant. There's a large patio for outdoor dining. Staff was friendly and helpful. I'll definitely go back! read more

Basil's is a Naperville staple, it's been local for 15 years+! Certain dishes are fantastic and others are okay. I love their appetizers, soups, salads and dolmades, lamb shank and lemon chicken. They have wonderful specials throughout the year. It's a lovely place to dine. read more

I am sad I chose this restaurant for a special occasion on a week day. The food was not fresh and the lamb kabobs were "petite" all right - they should pass off as starter's not the main course. Somewhere along the line, this institution has lost its footing. I should have just kept driving to some other places near Bridgeview for some real kabobs where their meats are not necessarily petite for the same cost. What a very nice restaurant located in the outter ring of the Fox Valley Mall with plenty of free parking right outside the door. The restaurant was beautifully appointed making the ambiance very relaxing and the service from when we walked in the door until we left was outstanding. We were there in the middle of a Saturday afternoon when it was pretty calm, but I have been there during their busy time, and the service was outstanding then as well. The bread served on the bread board at the start of the meal was very good and was especially good with the Avgolemono Soup. I am not real sure I would order the Chicken Parm again as the chicken seemed a little over processed. The Mousaka flavor was very good but the vegetables in it were cut rather large so they were not done to my liking and I needed a knife to eat it. One person at the table ordered the side of grilled vegetables and really enjoyed them. The Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken was really enjoyed by the person who ordered it. Vodka Gnocchi was very good nicely sauced and cooked to perfection. The restaurant including the restroom is easily navigated when using an assistive device for mobility. read more

if you like Greek food hit up basil's for an authentic experience. they bring bread olive oil and cheese to the table. The saganaki and zucchini chips were really good. Zucchini chips come in big portion easily can feed 3 to 4 people. For being in the Fox Valley area, this place was pretty decent for lunch. Prices aren't terrible. Service was good. It wasn't busy. Gyros were very good. Portions are huge. Tarama (red caviar) with pita bread was a nice appetizer. I typically don't eat too much fried food, so I would just skip the deep fried zucchini. The lamb mac and cheese mostaccioli was a little salty. That's why I look off one star. However, there was a generous amount of meat in there. read more

Basil is a go to for my father and I. The service is amazing. They make it feel like home. You could always find a table despite being busy. I've had many dishes from their menu some better than others but all cooked really well. It was just a matter of my personal taste. New Year's Eve 2022 was my second time visiting Basil's, and like the first time, my second time did not disappoint. Despite being chock full of patrons, the restaurant was absolutely professional and handled the crowd really well. My husband I ordered the Saganaki, which I believe is a MUST try. If not for the salty, luscious flavor of this Greek pan fried cheese, then for the "flaming" experience it comes with. To give you an idea, the waiter will bring the cheese out, and then light it on fire (don't worry, it's well away from your hair, but I highly advise being careful with the hairspray!). It's a sight to behold, while all yell OPA! A fun experience, and highly recommended. The avgolemono soup is SUPERB. A silky, savory flavorful soup with a hint of zestiness that is sure to delight. I ordered the sea bass the first time, and it was supremely good, and this time I ordered the salmon, which is also pretty darn good. My husband ordered the Lamb Porterhouse which he ABSOLUTELY LOVED!!! I ordered the non-alcoholic Cherry Luxe, which was also amazing. We started off with Grilled Calamari that was fresh and delicious! The portion was generous and more than enough for two to share. We ordered the 12 oz Rib Eye and the Lolli-Pop Lamb Chops (4 per order). Both entrees came with roasted potatoes (both are also gluten-free). The Rib Eye was very good and had a great smoky flavor. The Lamb Chops were absolute perfection! Cooked just right (medium rare), and bursting with flavor. Definitely our favorite! Service was great! Our server was attentive, but, not overbearing. Water glasses were filled whenever needed, without having to ask. Nice to have some really good service! The lobby is bright and inviting, The dining area is huge and has several curtains that can be used to section off areas for more privacy. **VERY BAD EXPERIENCE** ***Please read and BEWARE diners!!*** A friend and I were in the area attending an event, so we decided to stop in for a quick dinner. Atmosphere was nice; server was adequate and food was good; albeit a bit pricey. I'm not cheap, so no complaints there. HOWEVER- once our bill came, there WAS a PROBLEM. I was never given an itemized bill to verify for accuracy. The waiter just shoved a ZON at me, at the table, which ONLY displayed a TOTAL price, with no breakdown- and OF COURSE the pre populated, outrageous TIPS percentages! I felt very uncomfortable having the waiter standing there staring at me to pay my bill. It wasn't until AFTER paying, were you printed/given your receipt. I looked at it and immediately noticed the TIP was calculated off the total, not subtotal prior to tax. You DO NOT tip on tax. I was very surprised to see this SCAMMER method of taking advantage of patrons who are literally keeping these restaurants afloat, in this abysmal economy. The waiter disappeared. I immediately went to look for a "hostess/manager" to discuss this, and asked why my bill breakdown was not given to me to inspect, prior to paying, just presented with the computerized ZON machine showing a single dollar amount, with of course, the outrageously high, prepopulated TIP percentages. She just stood there blinking at me in a condescending manner. I asked her why I was forced to pay a tip amount on a total, without an opportunity to view my bill first. She said: THAT's WHAT THE CREDIT CARD companies MAKE us do. I disagree. I asked her to fix the issue; she refused and stated she would need to run my card again. That would mean then tying up $200.00 dollars of my money, in order to fix their mistake. I told her to void the transaction and just allow me to tip the way I wanted and she REFUSED! I gave her my card and she refused to take it to fix the problem. I advised her I would allow her to rectify the issue before I escalated, she again refused. She stated I'll just refund your entire dinner. I advised her, how could she do that, if she's refusing to the my card to do so? I preferred the server receive his tip for service done and asked her again to fix the problem the correct way. Again she refused. I checked my bank account-of course she LIED. Do yourself a FAVOR: EAT somewhere else- spend your hard earned in one elsewhere. I plan to report this to the Attorney General's office. Absolutely DISGUSTED by my experience at this restaurant. read more

I've loved this place in the past, always had Sea bass. Came here tonight with a group. They didn't have sea bass so I ordered prime rib for $40.00. One of the worst cuts of meat I've ever had. Full of gristle and very tough. Came with 3 slices of soggy potato snd some bread. The service was good. The saganaki was good too. But I was so disappointed with my meal. If you come here do NOT order prime rib. Other people ordered a chicken dish and they really liked it. This review is just about one single dinner. It's been almost ten years since I ate here last, and how many restaurants even last that long? So that's saying something for this place. But Basil's has a lot going for it: attractive setting (from the moment you walk up the front walk, accented by mugo pines, blue spruce and a lovely little waterfall, to the interior with a judicious amount of decorative tilework), great staff, and delicious food. I can't say enough good things about our server Mayra. She was attentive, funny, made good suggestions and generally everything you want in a waitress. As stated, the food was awesome. My mom got a house salad and crab cake (both appetizers) as her entree, but she felt like the salad was big enough to share, so Dad and I got a taste: zingy vinaigrette, thick slices of tomato and cucumber and salty feta -- this was not just a sad little starter salad! My mother also loved her crab cake, full of crab and accompanied by a cup of remoulade. Dad and I both got the steak bowl: chunks of steak sauteed with bell peppers, onions and mushrooms and served on a bowl of rice. I could have done without the dollop of tomato sauce on top of the rice but otherwise this was fabulous, and my dad loved his too. Let's not forget the fresh sesame bread at the start of the meal, with a cruet of olive oil: a yummy Mediterranean starter. We were too full for dessert but there's a whole page to choose from if you so desire. It won't take me ten years to get back to Basil's! This review is based solely on the happy hour bar experience and menu. First of all, thIs place has an awesome happy hour menu, from a variety of martinis to deep can't wine options at a great price, you can't go wrong here. My favorite martini was the strawberry basil martini, it is so good! For the food option, we tried the grilled calamari that was just ok. I was honestly picturing something a bitt fresher and more char grilled than what we got. Next time if I go the calamari route, I'll get it fried. Next we had the gyro nachos that were delicious. Served on fresh fried puta chips (my favorite!) and topped with group meat, onions, tomato, cucumbers and tzaziki this is a great appetizer to share or have as a meal for one person.
