Beautiful restaurant, but the food and the service were not quite my taste.
I came here for dinner to catch up with a friend from college whom. I haven't seen in over 12 years. We ordered the flaming cheese, calamari, roasted potatoes and 'lump' crabcake, and hoped to catch up over a delicious meal.
The theatrics of the flaming cheese was probably the best part of the dish... After our server mastered the flambe effect, that is. He definitely botched it the first time. Despite being set alight, I was expecting the cheese to be soft and have a texture similar to a rich fondue. Instead, this was a rectangular chunk of cheese that was merely warmed and sorta softened. Plus, the serving dish was not conducive for easy serving. Ultimately we had to slice the cheese with a knife and scrape it off the bottom of the serving plate. Moreover, the cheese had an unpleasant aftertaste. It looked like Munster, but finished like blue cheese. Suffice it to say this was not my favorite dish.
The calamari and roasted potatoes, fortunately, were the savior of our meal. We received a generous portion of calamari, complete with large, lightly fried rings...and a few tentacle clusters as well. The creamy tomato sauce was a different, but delicious, accompaniment to the dish. The roasted potatoes were fantastic. They were seasoned with a spice blend similar to Old Bay and roasted to chewy deliciousness. Spendid!
As for this crab cake... firstly, you cannot use the term 'lump' to describe the crab meat in your crab cake and then proceed to fill it with backfin crab meat. Second, no respectable lump crab cake could ever be smashed down into a flat patty. Why? Because it is too, well... lumpy. Flavorwise, the finished product wasn't terrible. Just not my favorite. I live very close Maryland and I know a lump crab cake when I see one... and this was not it. Just call it a crab cake and leave it at that.
We planned to order dessert, but the server was so aggressive that we decided to leave. He wasn't rude or anything, but he was a bit too overzealous. Every 2-3 minutes either he or other member of the wait staff was at our table, asking us something and otherwise intruding upon our dining experience. We could barely have a conversation because we kept getting interrupted, and we were both getting quite annoyed. We didn't want to be rude, but unfortunately they didn't pick up on the social cues to give us our space. Several times our server just cut right into our conversation asking us the exact same question that he had asked us only a few short minutes before. We barely had the chance to put our forks in our food, so why he would come back not even five minutes later asking us if wanted anything else is beyond me.
Despite his assertions to the contrary, he was very pushy and I felt like he was just trying to get us out of there. And when he wasn't there, other members of the waitstaff we're practically hovering over our tables just waiting for us to put a fork down so that they could remove something else from the table.
I appreciate proactive visits to the table frequently, to fill up water and such, but if there's no need to interrupt your guests, please don't do so. Just fill up the water and leave. Or drop off the item and leave. This waitstaff was 'proactive' to the point of making our visit uncomfortable, and we dreaded seeing members of the wait staff coming. Ultimately we ended up leaving early and relocating to another venue to be able to continue our visit and our conversation in peace. read more
