This restaurant was recommended by the local. I was told they have great Pad Thai noodles and Pad See Ew so decided to give this place a try. I was really excited to be here initially. The menu selection looks great. And having a peek at the open kitchen, the cooks and helpers all look like they are from Thailand. Given i grew up in Asia, a country next to Thailand, eating lots of Thai food growing up, i had my fingers crossed hoping ' please let it be at least 70% authenthic'. Here are the food we ordered : 1. Chicken satay : it's okay, the tumeric marinates are still all over the chicken. The peanut sauce is good but wished the chicken weren't so wet. Unless you really craving for chicken and like tumeric sauce, pass.... 2. crispy calamari : one of the better dish we finished without complaint. i would recommend this to anyone. 3. Fresh rolls: Its good. Not the best i have ever had. I will also recommend this to anyone. 4.Sweet crispy basil chicken - Its way toooooo sweet. It's like a candy dish with chicken. 5. Tom Yum with schrimp - We asked for medium spicy and it taste more like a mild in a typical thai restaurant. And let me warn you, this soup is SWEET! We have never tasted Sweet Tom Yum soup before. 6. Pad Thai Chicken - Also very SWEET! Too sweet for regular pad thai to be honest. 7. Pad See Ew with beef - Also too SWEET..... The first thing I noticed was how empty it was and then after the five minutes it took to get service including the menus I saw the menu was worn and torn in places. Basically I was very unimpressed with the service. There was two servers, a blonde and an extremely rude latina. It took five minutes in an empty restaurant to get water. Asked for a runny fried egg that came with a side of attitude when I asked to be more runny. They took another five minutes to redo the egg, meanwhile the dish got cold. It didn't taste good and I won't recommend or come back. There are better Thai places and this one has gone downhill. Very good dependable reasonably priced Thai Cuisine. They started us off with complimentary Tom YUM soups that were hot and sour with pineapple, mini corns and tofu. The Chile Basil Chicken here is hand chopped very flavorful moist chicken studded with some bamboo shoots and some bell pepper for color. I thought the flavor and heat for me was right on and I liked that it came with a little fresh salad and my choice of rice and a fried crisp. My husband tried the Crying Tiger. My experience here was alright. The wait staff was fairly attentive but kept giving us unwanted looks. I don't know if it was due to our looks or conversation they heard while walking by but it wasn't a friendly interaction from them. The Thai iced tea was pretty tasty but they filled the drink to the brim with ice so there wasn't much actual fluid. The dumplings had a good flavor and were a hit for the table. The tom kha soup was much too sweet. The soup should be creamy. The duck in my curry was not good. The curry sauce itself was fine but not the meat inside. Very cute restaurant, owner is nice and attentive to tables. I love their Thai tea and boba that comes in a very fancy tall glass, feels really special. On our way back from Big Sur, we passed by Paso Robles to satisfy our Thai cuisine craving! We found parking (luckily) on the streets, and went inside for lunch. It happens to be the restaurant's 10 year anniversary, so they are giving 10% off all meals. We ordered: (1) Pad eggplant with seafood combination $15 = so tasty! i love seafood in general, so this was the perfect combination of fish, shrimp, squid, and scallop, tossed with eggplant, basil, bell peppers in a savory chili sauce. yum, i ate it up so fast...it's a bit embarrassing. :) (2) Green curry with tofu $12 = my husband had this dish and thought it was delicious too; he is a fan of tofu so incorporated that into his entree. green curry is supposedly more spicy than red/yellow curry. his dish also came with eggplant. the curry was served in a bowl. (3) Mango sticky rice $8 = we got this dessert to-go and ate it back at home. it was the usual mango sticky rice that you can expect at any thai restaurant. it's our go-to dish whenever we are having thai dessert! Each lunch entree came with their 'soup of the day" = Tom kha soup, a side of salad, and some pineapples. I noticed that the restaurant had plenty of seating available, however my to-go order still took quite a bit of time to come out. AVOID AT ALL COST! Terrible experience! This place focuses on their take out orders versus their customers in the dinning room. But that's not the worst part. We ordered quickly upon being seated. Waited 45 min for an order of fried calamari. It must have been an old bad they found in the back of the freezer. It was nasty...looked dehydrated and tastes aweful! Asked the waiter to take it back and remove from tab. Poor server had the same issue with the table adjacent from us, different appetizer. They chose to eat theirs on the house. We ordered a pineapple fried rice and a pad Thai. Our server told us she didn't know what the kitchen was doing. She must have told us 3 times that our food was coming up next, meanwhile other tables were getting food. An hour and a half later we decided to head out. No sign of food. read more

They made us wait an hour for the food and it wasn't that good either. The Pad Thai was blah - no vegetables or garnish accents. An hour wait for unexceptional Thai food is not something that I believe should ever be acceptable. If one reads the one and two star reviews of this place, you will note three things: complaints about being understaffed, complaints about wait times (especially for takeout), and complaints about the Pad Thai ( no veggies, garnishes, or accents.) So being out of town, we naturally consulted Yelp to determine our spot for dinner. So many places to choose in this town of 32,000 people. BBQ...no. Italian...no. Thai...Yahtzee!! We called the front desk of Hotel Siri and one of the employees suggested Basil Thai. After a short, convincing conversation, we plug Basil Thai into Google Maps and off we go. Only minutes from our motel, we make it to the main square in town where Basil Thai is located. After 10 minutes looking for parking, we make it to our destination. The restaurant is mildly busy, which surprised us a little seeing it was Saturday night. We were seated and then greeted by our server. Not much on the outgoing side, she gives us time to look over the menu after our drinks arrive. When dining in a new venue, we have several questions about the menu, what's the most popular dish, etc. I would have liked it if she was a little more into her job. Later we found out it's just her personality. My suggestion is to just ACT more interested. Our first impression was she rather be somewhere else. It turns out we were right as she disappeared midway through our meal and was no where to be found. Lol. But that's ok because Jasmine took care of us for the rest of the night! I am using a fictitious name here as she preferred to play along with my choice of name. Anyways....onto the food. Very , very good. We order the appetizer sampler which included a smattering of some of the traditional Thai favorites. Spring rolls, fried and raw, a fried shrimp item with a sauce which I've never had before but was outstanding. Chicken skewers, cucumbers and couple interesting sauces. Two thumbs up. Next we recieved our shared plates. Seafood fried rice. Absolutely divine! Hot, loaded with fresh seafood, and full of flavor. Chicken larb. Not our favorite. Had more of a light and sweet flavor is the best was I can describe it. It was missing that spicy, fish sauce, lime component we had becomes accustomed to at our local Thai spot at home. Finally, the shrimp curry. Also delicious but still was hoping for less sweet and more spicy. So Jasmine comes over and visits with us and I mention the dishes needing a ramp up of spice and she immediately suggested a sauce that was available and for the life of me I can't remember how to pronounce it or say it but it literally skyrocketed our experience from ok to very good. Thanks Jasmine. You saved the day! Overall, we left happy customers thanks to Jasmine and that amazing sauce that should be featured to every customer who walks in the door. We were in Paso Robles recently for a wine festival and chose to have dinner at Basil Thai. We checked Yelp and the reviews seemed fairly solid, so we headed in with no worries about our meal. Our dining companions had never had Thai food before, so we were excited to share some traditional dishes. Unfortunately, what transpired was a truly terrible meal. At the end we felt so bad for suggesting our friends try Thai here that we picked up the entire tab and went to Taco Bell afterwards. Upon entering, it's a nice little set-up right off the square, with a pretty long bar alongside the seating. We noticed right off the bat that there were no dishes of chili flakes, chili oil, or other typical condiments on the tables. My husband and I really, really enjoy Thai (let's be honest - it was probably the #1 reason we chose it as our last vacation destination), and have never seen the tables go without added spices/condiments. From upper end restaurants in Bangkok to the off the beaten path cafes, we always saw setups. This really should have been the tipoff to the meal we were about to have. Our group ordered a variety of dishes, so I'll just run down the list: Appetizer plate - This had a mix of satay skewers, spring rolls, calamari, and a couple other nibble. Overall it wasn't bad. Run of the mill, but not bad. Tom yum - Terrible. There is no other way to put it. This soup tasted like licking a block of tamarind paste. Tom yum is traditionally a "sweet and sour" soup. This dish left out ALL the sour. No hints of lime anywhere, just a cloying sweetness that left everyone OK with leaving the nearly full bowl on the table. The add ins were unconventional (broccoli???), and the amazing mix of galangal, kaffir lime, and lemongrass that this soup is known for was nonexistent. We figured out they must have skipped the set ups of chili condiments because even those wouldn't have saved this soup. Pad Thai - When our entrees came out, we moved from one disappointing dish to the next. The pad thai was first up. I've typically seen this dish served in higher end restaurants with some garnish, but what we got was a pile of noodles with some chili paste, chicken, and peanuts mixed in. No lime or cilantro garnished the dish, and the chicken was essentially an overcooked jerky. By now, our friends had written off Thai food as an entire cuisine to be forgotten. Chili Pork - My dish was the best of the evening, but still unmemorable. Thinly cut pork was tossed with a heavy chili sauce (I'd asked for extra spicy) and some peppers and onions. Still, for Thai food to be devoid of the acid elements from lime or other ingredients, it was lackluster. Mine did at least have some basil in it. Sweet crispy basil chicken - My husband ordered a crispy chicken dish that may have been brought in from the Panda Express down the street, because it was a dead ringer for quick Chinese food. A super gelatinous, overly sweet sauce over some friend chicken pieces and vegetables. In a takeout container and for half the price, I might have been OK with it. Also- some basil in the "basil chicken" may have been a start. Pad See Ew - I didn't personally try this one, but it looked like a bland dish. The person at our table who ate it did so out of hunger, not enjoyment. Service was decent and my water glass was always filled. That's the only reason I gave a second star. I wonder if this place has gone downhill, because the Yelp reviews (and photos of dishes) from other reviewers in no way reflect what we had. Skip this restaurant entirely. read more

This is the very best Thai restaurant I have experienced. There is so much love, and inspired creativity in these dishes. Interior decor, service and energy were wonderful. My wife and I had Banana Leaf Salmon. Tom Kha Soup, Shitake with Greens. On plate with the salmon was Coconut Rice. This rice is just so good! Again, the best ever that I have had. Nothing is overdone to make it unique or to stand out in some lame or odd way. It's functional cooking that is simply much better than everything else I've had in Thai. The feeling I have is that the chef or owner has a ton of experience, and has learned through years of trial and error what works best. There is also a definite flair for beauty, and the play between different tastes and the balance they can create for each other that made our dishes a true joy to experience. These people go the extra mile. For those who care and appreciate detail I do not think you'll be disappointed. It was AMAZING. read more

This is our local and fun Thai restaurant to visit on the square in Paso. It has some great open windows in the front and cozy feel to the back. Sometimes it's crowed so we just belly up to the bar and enjoy our favorite server (oops I don't know her name...ok asking next time). They've recently changed the menus and plating and it is all so beautiful and tasty. You will get large portions of food if your order the rice or noodle dishes, but who doesn't love to take home Thai food for snacks for later? The appetizer platters are great and we can always order extra hot and they'll bring it that way without fear. We've ordered a variety of food here and it's all great, we took a trip to Thailand this year and it can compare so you can feel good ordering anything and having a good experience. The new menu has pretty straight up photos, so no real need to explain what you're ordering, it's pretty clear. Everything is pretty spot on and I'd give it 5 stars except for what has been said on Yelp before...regarding the servers, just odd. Outside of our favorite (she is the only Thai looking female server in there) the rest are well, unique. You can stand at the door forever before someone acknowledges your presence. Very strange as the cash register is right there and usually someone is entering an order or something in that area...hello, look up, say hello, let us know you see us and that someone will help us soon. There isn't an official hostess that I've ever seen so perhaps the servers have not figured out that greeting is everyone's responsibility. We know that is their weak spot and some of the servers are odd so we just take that with a grain of salt and hope for our favorite (maybe if we learned her name we could ask for her...deh...ok our fault). Oh mahgad!!! So delicious. You have to try their shrimp salad. If we weren't at a vineyard wine tasting I would have drank the leftover salad dressing. Found this little gem through Yelp while wine tasting in Paso. I ordered the pad Kee Mao and it was delicious. My friend ordered the combination advertisers and that was delicious as well. I totally don't understand why all my friends love this place! The orange chicken at Panda Express is better than their "crispy chicken"! My friend who I hadn't seen for a while, suggested this place.... I already knew that I was not impressed the few other times I had been there but this was basically for her birthday so I shut up and sucked it up and thought I would take someone else's advice who had said they loved the crispy chicken. Lets just say it wasn't awful. The flavor was good but the chicken itself was chewy and nothing to rave about... She had the pineapple rice which was served in a pineapple and had shrimp in it and looked quite good. If I was ever to come back, I would probably order that next time but not to jump ahead... I'm not sure I will be back.... The service was good but the guy was so unfriendly. He was on the phone when we arrived and never acknowledged us at all. A young girl came up after a few minutes and was very sweet and seated us. The guy on the phone ended up being our server and he was fine as a server goes but his personality was about as dry as the rice! (No, the rice was actually fine!) Sooo... I gave it another chance.
