Paso is sparce on variety, so thankfully, we do have 3 Thai places. Thai Classic last week, and on the other side of the park, Basil Thai -- batter up! I do like the interior design/decor, the vibe, and the service. However, the prices are ridiculous, $24 for Pad Thai!?! Come on. Food overall was good, but for the price, gimme Thai Classic any day. While visiting Paso we were looking for some good food and decided on Thai and found Basil open on a Thursday evening. We were greeted and seated right away. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. The restaurant is family friendly and a nice date night spot. Me and the hubby ordered the golden bags, shrimp rolls and fried crispy chicken to share as appetizers. The golden bags and shrimp rolls were crunchy and flavorful but the crispy chicken was not that great. It was to bready and not crispy at all, the dipping sauce though that came with it was good. For entrees I ordered the wonton soup and the hubby ordered the fried rice. My wonton soup was good, but nothing special. What a fabulous meal. It's been 14 years since I've eaten here, because I moved to Tennessee in 2010 and just moved back this year. I would drive from Morro Bay all the time to eat here. It was nice to come back and find that the food is still great! And the service is top notch, as well! Today I had the Beef Salad and the sticky rice with mango! It was nice, light, and very tasty! I took my family to Basil for some deliscious That Food... As i have eaten there many times with great results... However this time we got the worse waiter possible that made our dining experience A miserable experience...anytime we tried to get him to our table for somthing, all we got was attitude and delay as he tossed whatever it was on the table...It took A half an hour to recieve our bill and "to-go" containers... I have been coming to Basil's since I was a baby. I'm 20 now. The food is incredible. I highly recommend the Tom Kha with chicken and a side of white rice to pour the soup over. Most of these reviews haven't had good Thai food. They have the best Tom Kha I've ever had. It's sweet and spicy not sour like many restaurants get wrong. The service is great and most of their staff have been with them for years. The place is decorated beautifully and is a great place for dinner. They are always very accommodating and helpful. A nice thai spot in Paso Robles What I ate: - Cup of the Tom Kha soup w/chicken. This was just right. I wanted some warm soup and this hit the spot - Pad see ewe. This was also pretty good. Exactly what you'd expect - Mango sticky rice: I was really happy to see this on the menu as it was the season and they used the best mangos. I've been here before and didn't think the food was great or even served hot enough, but my sister and her family wanted to give it another try. Unfortunately, this visit was even worse. We had a very unprofessional server who told us he was "busy" when we asked for water. When we requested a different container for leftovers, he refused. He made himself unavailable, had a noticeably bad attitude, and even refused to separate a check for a guest who wanted to pay for his own meal. To make matters worse, he added an automatic gratuity , which was completely undeserved. After this experience, we will not be returning. No customer should be treated this way. read more

The food is more American - Thai, however, we told our server to tell the chef that we want real spicy authentic Thai cooking. They were happy to do so & accommodated us. Order multiple dishes by Door Dash. All were OK and lacked real Thai flavor profile you might expect. Extremely disappointed with the sticky rice. It was literally only sticky rice. No Mango, No coconut milk. No Mung Beans. I went to the restaurant the next day to give them a chance to make it right. Their original claim was that this is the way it comes on Door Dash, only sticky rice. She claimed that many people order this way. It wasn't until I showed them the online picture that she changed the story. I requested a simple refund and they were not having it. The only resolution they offer was to remake it for me. We made a reservation for 4 for a Saturday evening. The restaurant was maybe ¾ full. We were seated quickly, brought waters, ordered drinks and 1 starter, which also arrived quickly. When the drinks arrived, we placed out main orders, including 2 from the Specials menu. Then we had to wait an HOUR . I signaled the wait person and she said we were after one table to be served. Meanwhile the place was full but many tables didn't have food yet. The take-out section was very busy and seemed to be getting preference from the chefs. After this hour, we were told that the 2 Special items had run out and we had to place a different order, which would take another 15 minutes! Two plates were then served while the other two people had no food. We shared the food that we had, cancelled the orders that hadn't arrived, and left. The food is good and they have a huge menu but this is the second time we have been there and had an extended wait. The first time we thought it was just that particular evening, but clearly this is a pattern. We'll be going elsewhere in future. read more

I am extremely amazed on how thoughtful and well packed my door dash order was packaged. They wrapped my papaya salad so the liquids wouldn't leak, or maybe so the fish sauce wouldn't smell too much for my coworkers and my chili basil was also wrapped to prevent liquid from spilling. They have a great presentation for their food. The papaya salad was inside a cabbage leaf and my extra spicy was spicy and flavorful. If you can handle jalapeno or seraranos, you can handle the extra spicy. I don't normally order pad Thai, but figured I should try theirs out and it was well balanced with the flavors ( some place not enough tamarind or too sweet). The fresh rolls were wrapped in serane wrap so they wouldn't stick to the container, and they did have that fresh spring roll taste. The chili basil also has nice flavors and the I like how they packaged their rice in a small container that had their name on it. Came here for lunch on our way to Santa Barbara. Easy parking by the front. The restaurant is very spacious and nicely decorated. Our toddler love their miniature items and spent a good amount of time looking at them. Thai Rolls - Filled with veggies. A bit bland but does come with a sweet & sour sauce. Pad See Eaw - Pretty good. I liked it. My toddler had some and she's picky. Pad Eggpant - Some of the eggplant was underdone as well as peppers The menu is extensive and has interesting items. We purchased two pineapple rice meals to go and it was more than 50 bucks. No drinks. The amount of food was adequate, but prices have gotten crazy. For 5, we ordered: - Pad Kee Mao pork: 3/5 - very little pork pieces and the noodles were a bit too oily - Pineapple Fried Rice chicken: 4/5 - minus the raisins, very flavorful - Green Curry beef: 5/5 - great portion and had a hint of spicy kick to it - Sweet Crispy Basil chicken: 3/5 - more salty and tangy then sweet, very saucy so most pieces of the chicken were not crispy - Larb Gai salad: 3/5 - more on the drier and less flavorful side - Thai Teas: 5/5 Service was good. The wife is ALWAYS in the mood for Asian food so on our most recent Paso trip she wanted Basil for lunch. We walked in and got a table right away. I had the Basil Chicken. You can specify your level of spice from Mild - Medium - Hot - Extremely Hot. I found it funny that the menu states that you're on your own if you ask for your food spicy but can't take the heat. A few years ago I was at another Thai restaurant and asked for my food hot. The waiter said, "Do you want it hot or Thai hot?" I thought what the hell and asked for it Thai hot. I'LL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN. My lips were on fire for about an hour. At Basil I said, give it to me kinda hot. This was the perfect spice level for me. Great Thai restaurant in downtown Paso Robles. We were driving from Nor Cal to Pismo Beach and decided to have lunch here on our way. We walked into a beautifully decorated restaurant and the hostess was very welcoming. We got seated right away and while we were admiring the art on the walls and the giant Buddha statue, we were handed the menus. Since we were very hungry and wanted to make this a quick stop we went straight to the entrees. Our order was: 1. Pineapple fried rice 2. Garlic Jumbo Prawns 3. Cashew Nut tofu and vegetables 4. Penang Curry The dishes were decent size. I have had better fried rice but the kids absolutely loved them so no complaints. The prawns and the cashew nut both were very tasty, I would certainly recommend those. The penang curry was alright. All in all, we were very happy to have made out stop here. read more

I tried the wanton soup and it had so many large cut vegetables that there was very little liquid and the wantons were so mushy they fell apart in globs. Came here during our visit to Paso and the server was super nice. She helped us pick items that would taste good if made truly vegetarian. The food was all delicious and flavorful and portions were a good size. The fried tofu in peanut sauce was my most surprising item that was really delicious. We also got the Thai rolls, panang curry, drunken noodles and spicy fried rice. The Thai tea is delicious and it's also non dairy! Basil has always been a fine choice in the past. It is located across the street from City Park, and is well laid out with tables for single diners to large groups or families. We placed our order with the very pleasant waitress. She came back a few minutes later, saying the items we ordered would take fifteen minutes. She enquired if this would be OK. We said yes, and ordered an additional appetizer of Shrimp Dumplings. The dumplings were brought out in a timely fashion. They were presented in a bamboo steamer within individual spoons for each dumpling - very nice presentation. We both took a bite of a dumpling and looked at each other - they were wonderful. The dumplings were fully filled with shrimp in a thin, well-made wonton wrapper. Delicious. Our entrees arrived shortly after we finished the appetizer. Both entrees were nicely presented on the plates. The Mussamun Lamb consisted of a huge lamb shank, yellow curry rice, with a small side of broccoli & carrots. The Lobster Fried Rice was enormous, with a very substantial portion of fried rice & two medium-sized lobster tails on top. Both entrees were delicious. I did not think we would finish our plates since the portions were so large. However, the food was so delectable, we had no reason to ask for a leftover box. Basil Thai easily gets four stars. They are located on the town square. We came in on a week night and and they were probably 75% full not bad. Nicely decorated and very clean. Our party of four orders egg rolls, yellow curry, beef flambe, pad thai noodles and of course for dessert mango sticky rice. Appt and mains were all good. I noticed some reviews mentioning small portions but they seemed normal size to me. White rice was complimentary. The mango sticky rice was very good. Mango was just right ripe.
