Five stars for their salsa (I'm a salsa snob), 2-stars for their food. I ordered something not on the menu. I love chili Verde smothered over cheese enchiladas. The best they could do is green sauce over cheese enchiladas (even though they had chili Verde options on the menu. It was so-so. I wouldn't order it again. My customer ordered chicken fajitas, his looked better and he said it was delicious. Wait staff was a little slow. It wasn't busy. But it was loud. I'm always cognizant of sound as I generally have customers with me. I struggled to here my client. The wait staff, while slow to start, but then kept out diet cokes filled. As a side note, the table tops were tacky. I'm not sure how some restaurants have that while other are squeaky clean. It make me less confident in their cleanliness. I can't bring myself to call chain restaurants authentic Mexican food. That said Barrio Queen is a notch above other chains. From table side guacamole to authentic ingredients this place is really good. My first time coming here, Friday night and was super busy! Make a reservation beforehand! We got there at 6pm and had a 20-25 minute (projected) wait. Turned out to be 17 minutes, for a table for 2! Our server was very friendly, and quick bringing waters and chips + salsa. The menu is SUPER big, a bit overwhelming. They have many different kinds of each item (ex: 3 kinds of chicken tacos, 5 kinds of enchiladas, etc). Our food was out within 10 minutes I want to say. My date and I both exclaimed "Wow that was fast!!!" For it being such a BUSY night! My food was really good, the flavor was THERE! Only complaint would be that the positions are a bit small for the price you pay. My date enjoyed his, just said his beans were a bit cold and he didn't care for one of his enchilada sauce flavors. They serve traditional Mexican food and I tried the loaded nachos and roasted elote. The elote was delicious, however the nachos didn't really hit the spot for me. Service was quick and attentive. Food was just "ok" ... below quality for what I'm used to in Mexican food. Had nacho Chingones appetizer (small order) which was good. Crisp, thicker chips which a lot of places don't get right and the nacho's sag. Not here. For entree, tried the Mexican protein Barrio bowl with chicken. The chicken was way overcooked and dry (almost inedible). Good selection of margarita's though I didn't order one today. $64 for two (before tip) ... Ugh words can't explain how much I LOVE barrio queen!! Everything is so fresh and homemade from the corn tortillas and I believe the tortilla chips too. They offer unlimited chips and salsa on the house that are sooo good, and their happy hour is amazing from 2-6pm on weekdays. I basically spent ~$25 total and got 3 margaritas ($5 on happy hour), 2 tacos on happy hour (2 for $5), and 1 shrimp taco not on happy hour but it's so worth it. I got the Suadero Azteca Taco and Pollo Deshebrado Taco on happy hour which were amazing and I also got the camaron shrimp taco not on happy hour. I'm giving 4 stars because the shrimp taco I got had literally 1 shrimp in it which was really disappointing because it's usually my favorite taco here. They also have amazing guacamole which they make fresh in front of you. Our server was really kind as well, and was good about checking in on us, but our food did take a really long time to come out, as if they forgot about it. After spending several hundred dollars for a group, we were introduced probably a few minutes after receiving the bill of "how long will we be because there is a party waiting". Pricey menu but the short rib entrees are the best. I got 3 tacos- Quesabirria, Mar y Tierra and Pescado Asado. The Quesabirria was the best one out of the 3. The short rib was incredible; I can only handle 1 of these though because tons of cheese! The Mar y Tierra seemed like it was the bottom of the batch made. The Pescado Asado had no flavor. Rice and beans are not included. They do give you complimentary chips and salsa. The waiter didn't point out when I ordered that the 3 tacos for $18 is for all premium tacos, and 3 tacos for $15 is for regular tacos. I reviewed the menu again just now and it does mention that, but waiter should have pointed it out. It was about a 15 minute wait for a Friday evening - not bad! However, our drinks came after our meal did which was strange because I watched our waiter's huge party get their drinks way faster. I should have expected a bad experience from the moment we entered the front door there were no employees around. I would expect, even from afar for someone to have shouted out "Hi, be right with you." It only got worst. After being seated outside, we waited another 10 minutes for someone to come by, not with water or chips but to say "be right back." Our food took 20 mins and it was cold and bad. I ordered a burrito and my husband had the chili stew and it was gross, extremely salty and uneatable. We have had it before, so I know it could be good. We both ate two or three bites and were done. After 10 minutes, I set my timer on my phone for 20 minutes, joking we would walk out if nobody came to check on us or bring us the bill. My phone timer went off and just as I stood up the waiter appeared and ask if we were ready for the check. 30 minutes without checking in on a guest. If you didn't know what Mexican Food actually tastes like and you're not a fan of spice, I would recommend this place. The salsa is less spicy than Pace Picante Sauce. The carne asada tacos taste like they use fake smoke flavor to replace the actual grilled meat flavor. Corn tortillas are basic grocery store quality. Barrio Queen is peak Americanized Mexican food. Like, if your sister married a white guy from Idaho named Blake, this is what she would be eating for dinner at her in-laws house. Came here for a late lunch today after being dismissed from jury duty & Barrio Queen didn't disappoint. I've been to this several times & enjoyed every visit, so I'm glad the good streak continued. I sat at the bar & was greeted immediately by the bartender, I wish I'd caught his name. He offered a sweet smile & some menus, coming back with my drinks & chips & salsa quickly. The restaurant and bar were clean & properly set, a big green flag for me. I ordered the chopped salad with shrimp & proceeded to eat my chips & read my book. If you've never been, the chips seem like they could be a corn/flour blend? They're thicker than a typical restaurant style chip, but certainly super tasty. The salsa is super fresh with a special roasted flavor that's addictive. The salad came so quick - I guess I shouldn't be surprised as that's the expectation for lunch - & looked delicious. Three extra large grilled shrimp topped a delicious layered salad with romaine, black beans, grilled corn, red peppers, feta cheese, red onions, pomegranate arils, tortilla strips & some sliced avocado, served with a side of chipotle ranch. I'm not typically a corn girl but let me tell you, that stuff was amazing. Slight char, still grouped together & not individual kernels, I really enjoyed it. & the grill on that shrimp! They were so flavorful & juicy, definitely hit the spot. The combination of all the ingredients were great, save for the red onion but that's just a preference - I don't care for raw onion. The service was just as stellar as the food, & I'd go back just to be served so well by him again. Having been in the industry in the past, I recognize & appreciate service that's above par, it's not as easy to find as it was when I was in restaurants. Anyway, all in all, 5/5. I love the decor and vibe of this place, which is the first thing you notice when you come in. The hanging skull lights and especially brilliant. As for the rest of the experience, the food and service were just ok. Initially our server was very attentive, but we had to wait a long time for the check. I had the California enchiladas, and they were ok, but nothing to write home about. The red sauce (which was brown actually) tasted kind of bland. The zucchini were undercooked, which was not my thing. I would go back, but I can't say this is somewhere I'd crave. That said, the margarita flight was awesome, and I think this would be a great place for cocktails and appetizers. read more
