Call it a 2.5. My group wanted to like this place, and on the surface it seems like a slam dunk. Good "elevated" Mexican food is hard to come by and the menu seemed interesting. The tequila list with Fortaleza and the like gave me a lot of hope as well. Alas, it was not to be. Not a hint of spice in anything, from the salsa to the various meals we had. You can tell the quality of the ingredients was good, but the *flavor* was just not there. This began with the salsa, which looked promising but had zero taste. My group had three entrees - beer battered fish tacos, the 3 taco combo (cochinita pibil, quesabirria, and a taco de tinga), and the mixed grill. I also had the La Sandia cocktail, which took forever and tasted... unfortunate. It had an odd salty note and a weirdly thick consistency that reminded me of PediaLyte. Not the best beginning. The overall theme for the meals was the same - everything was acceptable but boring, especially in the flavor we were hoping for. The term we came up with was "inoffensive" - no spice to speak of in anything, despite the items being seasoned and not bland. The mixed grill is huge and the grilled cheese included is a fun addition, and the ingredients in the tacos tasted high-quality (lots of raves about the tortillas) but there was no kick to anything. Perhaps we needed to adjust expectations, but when I come to a Mexican place - even a chain - I expect a little more, you know? Service was very slow during an admittedly slow time of day and it took a long time to receive anything besides chips, but everything was fresh when it arrived. Portion sizes were perfectly acceptable for the price. Our visit was not memorable and I don't expect to be back, but we were glad to give it a try. read more

IT'S OKAY! Arizona is full of great Mexican options, and this isn't one of my favorites. Service was great, though! I also like the vibes and ambiance inside. I thought that the house margarita was just okay, nothing stood out about it. It honestly tasted a little watered down. Chips and salsa were good, the chips were nice and warm. They do have an additional habanero salsa you can request, it's spicier than the house salsa. I ordered the birria enchiladas, which I didn't realize came with a green sauce. I just didn't read the menu carefully, but I've never seen birria with green sauce. The green sauce was quite salty! Someone else at my table also complained their food was salty, although they thought it was the beans that were salty. This is one of those places I'd never go out of my way to go to, but if invited or nearby it's not a bad place to stop at. read more

I really wanted to like Barrio Queen. Our server was pleasant, attentive, and did his best throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. Even the water had a strong chemical taste, which wasn't a great start. I ordered the quesabirria tacos with rice and beans. The rice lacked flavor, the beans had an unusual taste, and the tacos themselves were underwhelming. The consommé (listed as Birria Au Jus on the menu) was bland, and the tacos arrived falling apart and looking hastily prepared. My wife ordered a sampler platter that was supposed to include a carne asada taco, but received a pollo asado taco instead. The staff corrected the mistake when we brought it to their attention, but when the carne asada taco arrived, the meat lacked the flavor and texture I would typically expect from carne asada. One reason I was hoping to enjoy this restaurant is that I genuinely like the atmosphere. The decor is attractive, the space is visually appealing, and it creates a fun, energetic environment. We came around 7 pm, the bar on the outside was empty. The bar tender took 2 or 3 minutes to visit and he didnt really do anything good, or bad. Just meh. He did bring us chips and salsa and took our order timely. My wife ordered some shrimp tacos and she said they were dry and over cooked. After a while of needed refills we got ahold of a different bartender and he was pretty fun. This bartender, Dom, made jokes we weren't in the VIP section, but made sure the rest of our evening was fun. I posted a picture of it, but the bar looked like this since we sat down. It was really dirty and cluttered. I looked across and the people across from us had probably 10 shot glasses and 5 empty beer glasses. It was moderately busy, but not so busy for the bar to be a filthy mess. They needed to probably have a barback or one of the bussers come and make a run through. I think this is our last stop at the Barrio Queen.. While the food is typically good the service is so bad. The last three times we've sat at the bar and you think it would be better, but it's definitely not. Waiting for long periods with no acknowledgment, no drink. The "bartender is MIA more than he's at the bar. Tonight was it. We watched over twenty plus minutes as the people next to us along with ourselves couldn't flag anyone down to get a drink or pay our bill. By the time we left my husband was so irritated. We returned to Barrio Queen after some time passed after a meh experience when they first opened and are glad we gave it another try! The elote ribs w were tasty, tacos were all good and the salsa was better than most. The skinny Margarita in particular was a nice balance of tart lime juice, agave nectar, and tequila. Our server was pleasant and reasonably attentive. The indoor-outdoor seating is nice in good weather. Definitely on our list to return. read more

We're visiting from LA and wanted to have dinner with our family from surprise. We looked on yelped and decided to try Barrio Queen. I'm so glad we did because everyone in our group of 10 enjoyed their dinner. We started with micheladas chingonas and margaritas, so good. We moved on to appetizers and ordered the Mexican street corn, corn ribs, queso fundido and taquitos. The fresh tortillas with the queso went perfect together. The corn ribs were so good we placed another order. The taquitos with the toppings they're served with were great and we added the habanero salsa for additional flavor. We also ordered tacos, tortas and enchiladas and the flavors were perfect! The service was good, everything came out quickly and perfect temperature. The restaurant is beautiful with so many little details, like the purse hooks on the tables, the alebrije lamp shades, and so much more! This place is definitely a vibe. My husband, I wanted this location on Friday, May 16 for their happy hour from 3 to 6 PM. The restaurant was not crowded at all and we opted to sit out on the patio since it was nice. They do have spritzers available, but they weren't on when we were there. Our service was good and they have a happy hour menu on the back of the smaller menu which will show you the options to choose from for five dollars for drinks and select appetizers. We did like the birria quesadillas but we did not care for the chicken quesadilla which was skimpy on the meat when we placed the order for the second appetizer and it's only enough for two people because you get four pieces. We did also try the frozen margaritas and a regular margaritas on the rocks if you would like to add flavor to any of your margaritas it's a additional dollar more, which will make it six dollars instead of five dollars. You also receive complementary chips and salsa. We enjoy the chips but the salsa was very watery not thick at all. But it's nice since it's free just wish the salsa had more flavor & was thicker. read more

Went in for their Taco Tuesday, Buy a taco get one free, great deal. I wanted to like this place, and it wasn't bad. But it was just okay. We got six tacos in total. Cochinita Pibil, Pescado, and Quesabirria were the favorites. With the quesabirria taking the most liked. They had the most flavor and had nice amounts of veggies and had a balance of flavor. The Asada, Suadero Azteca, Al Pastor were below average. The Al pastor was very sweet with no heat at all. The asada was tender and was seasoned. All three were lacking onion and cilantro. The tres leches was disappointing. There were very flavorful strawberries in the dish but I don't think there was any berry compote. Not pictured was an Azteca Burrito with rice and black beans. It was surprising dry. The beans were heavily salted, almost inedible. The rice was bland, lacking flavor. The chips were great. The red salsa was very mild, and close to being too tomato flavored. The verse salsa was a favorite and uniquely seasoned. Great service, very kid friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I would come back for this Taco Tuesday deal. read more

We came here a few times this trip because we lived their menu. We came during happy hour and they had $5 margaritas, $5 appetizers and we left with a full stomach and a plan to come back soon. They had a wonderful happy hour corail menu, but their house margarita with a takin rim was absolutely delicious. For food, we ordered guacamole, two chicken tacos, the nachitos and had lots of left overs. This place has the BEST happy menu by far in this area. Luckily, we had reservations. This place is, understandably, very popular - a line out the door at 5:30. The staff is helpful and efficient. I ordered 3 tacos - birria, barrio pollo and carnitas and pozole verde. The barrio was tasty with tender meat. The carnitas was OK, not the best but passable. The barrio polo was tasty even though the chicken was rather dry. I didn't have room for the pozole so it came home with me. I tasted the broth and it was flavorful. My friend said her Chile Rellano was tasty. The vegetables were flavorful. My other friend ordered the 3-taco offering. I don't remember which ones. We ordered the Mexican street corn appetizer. Food wasn't good in our opinion. I usually order chicken enchiladas at Mexican restaurants. The red sauce they use is awful in my opinion. I couldn't eat it. I ordered a cheese crisp instead. That was fine, but hard to get that wrong. My husband usually orders a chicken chimichanga at Mexican restaurants. He didn't like his dish either. Too much chicken and nothing much else inside. At other places there more ingredients inside and a variety of fixings. Not here. The only things I enjoyed were the chips and salsa. Although the first batch of chips were nice and warm. Our second batch was not warm at all. And the manager was nice about fixing my dish and not charging us for it. But overall, we did not like the food and won't be coming back. The Barrio Queen has a great vibe, music, and meals. We visited during the week around noon. The food was fine.

Omg... Why haven't we eaten here before!? Our experience was 100 percent delightful. The happy hour boasts all sorts of drinks for 5 bucks and some yummy appetizers. The star of the show was the mixed grill in the molcajete bowl on the main dinner menu. The stone bowl keeps all of the delicious food super hot- We shared it and still had some to bring home. Today was our 2nd visit. Early celebration of my birthday dinner at 4:00 pm. Margaritas at Happy Hour were watered down. We both had the Thursday special, the fajitas. Awful. Tortillas paper thin. The beef was tough and the peppers and onions were so soft it was like they were cooked several hours before. Food - we had dinner during Happy Hour. The Barrio Skinny Margarita was so refreshing - limey and bright and just enough salt. The pork tinga poblano was spectacular. Tender meat, perfect seasoning, and a welcome low-carb option. Other standouts include the Al pastor (which we enjoyed in taco form) and the elote ribs. Now the bad, I had the enchilada trio, and the tortillas in them were raw and then stuffed so VERY RUBBERY, the ends were inedible. My opinion, the red enchilada sauce was smoky and oddly sweet? Don't know what was happening there, but not a fan. Kid 2 had the Chile verde and it was "just ok". Kid 3 had the carne Asada torta and the least was DRY, like kid 1 had to give her the consume meant for the quesobirria tacos to help moisten it, TERRIBLE. Love the HH food and Margaritas! The Elote ribs are mine and my family's favorite thing! It's a bummer they are only available during happy hour I try to order them every time I go! The elote bowl or on the cob just isn't the same! Great open floor plan, indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of variety space inside and out! It's one of my go to's now! Especially since Lou Malnati's raised their happy hour prices! Everything there was five dollars appetizers beers and cocktails now they raise their price to six dollars and eight dollars so I'll be at Barrio a lot more often! That's the point of happy hour! I have tried other Barrio Queens in the west valley, but this was my first time here. We got there about 1245-1 PM and had a little bit of a wait. After about 5 minutes we were sat at a table. Our waitress was very friendly, however, I am not sure if she had a lot of other tables but she didn't come around too much and many times people in my party were sitting and waiting for her to come back to ask for a refill or waiting on her to bring the refill. It was lunch-time busy, but not overall busy. I ordered the mole enchiladas (remembered to take a picture after I had already dug in). These were so good I practically inhaled them. **One star goes solely to the alcoholic beverages -- it's the least they could get right.** From the moment my wife and I walked into the restaurant, the experience started going downhill. There was no one to greet us at the entrance, and multiple staff members walked past with scowling faces. That should've been our sign to leave. We waited 10 minutes to be seated, which was tolerable, but sitting at a table drenched in old rag water was not. I had to grab napkins myself just to dry off the table and chairs. Our server was kind, but the service was disorganized and slow. It took 15 minutes just to get our drinks, and another 15 minutes before we could even place our order. The lack of anticipation or attentiveness was clear. Now let's talk about the guacamole -- whoever trained staff on tableside preparation failed. A spoon instead of a fork? Poor control and mashing. It took over 10 minutes just to get a basket of chips. My wife's meal arrived first, and our server didn't return for a check-back or anything. We never received beverage refills and were essentially ignored until I stood up to ask for someone -- again. Then came my tacos, 35 minutes later. Just two asada tacos, but they arrived cold, flavorless, and carelessly plated. I sent them back. I told our server (who was visibly embarrassed) that she is the last line of defense before a dish hits the table. It's her job to notice when something is off -- and this clearly was. Looking into the kitchen, I finally understood the chaos. The woman in the red jacket, clearly meant to be in charge (chef), was running food instead of running the kitchen. That's a huge mistake. Without a clear leader managing timing, plating, and quality, the kitchen was sinking into disarray. A leader avoids the frontlines not because they're hiding, but because their job is to *lead* and set standards from within the brigade in the kitchen, not from the floor. That's why you have food runners, servers, managers, etc. To top it off, for just 2 drinks and 1 entrée (which was barely touched), we were handed a $60+ bill. I told our server to take it to the manager and demanded a discount for the poor experience. I would've expected our server to have already To the chef, the red jacket, and everyone working the pass: ask yourselves -- is this something you'd serve to someone you love? Someone having a bad day who came here hoping for something comforting? Mistakes should *never* leave the kitchen. That's rule #1. This is my professional observation and honest opinion. Don't worry -- even if corporate reached out with a free meal, I would never return to this crime scene of a restaurant. Happy hour is the reason we came but the food, amount, price and service by Tanner was the reason to return! We sat outside and the patio area was bustling on a packed Friday night. Chips & salsa were hot, crispy & so tasty! Especially the habanero salsa. Tanner was friendly, efficient and ensured our evening was enjoyable. What went well? Everything! We stopped in today during Happy Hour, which wasn't planned but turned out to be amazing! It was busy, so there was a bit of a wait for a table but we decided to just sit at the bar, which is an indoor/outdoor combo design. (And gorgeous!) It was nice out so we were on the outdoor/patio side. It'll be a perfect place to post-up and watch a football game in the fall/winter. The Happy Hour menu can pretty much be summed up as $5 everything, but we also took advantage of the $4 draft beers. Our service was top notch as the bartender was awesome; friendly, attentive and on top of everything. We LOVED the house chips & salsa, it didn't last long. On the Happy Hour menu...the NACHITOS! Not quite sure what to think of this place or say that I would make it a point to return. We ordered the table side guacamole. The only thing tasty about it was the added pomegranate. Basically chunks of avocado, not even smashed and just no flavor. Then to try and eat that with a basket of tortilla chip broken crumbs, basically had to eat it with a fork or two small chips to scoop together. I had the enchilada trio which was alright but had a tangy taste to the white sauce and a bit of ketchup tomato taste to the red sauce. Went to visit family in AZ and they took us to Barrio Queen. We were VERY pleasantly surprised. The ambiance, food and service were off the charts! I can honestly say the MOLE is by far the best I've had in YEARS! Special shout out to our server JORDAN R. for going above and beyond to make sure we were all satisfied and even brought us a sample of the mole sauce before ordering to make sure we liked it.
