They present the food nicely but no flavor you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still just a pig.Waitress is good, but that's all that was good. What went well? Everything! We stopped in today during Happy Hour, which wasn't planned but turned out to be amazing! It was busy, so there was a bit of a wait for a table but we decided to just sit at the bar, which is an indoor/outdoor combo design. (And gorgeous!) It was nice out so we were on the outdoor/patio side. It'll be a perfect place to post-up and watch a football game in the fall/winter. The Happy Hour menu can pretty much be summed up as $5 everything, but we also took advantage of the $4 draft beers. Our service was top notch as the bartender was awesome; friendly, attentive and on top of everything. We LOVED the house chips & salsa, it didn't last long. On the Happy Hour menu...the NACHITOS! Another great location in the local chain of Barrio Queen restaurants. The atmosphere is vibrant, rustic, beautiful, and is oozing with Mexican culture. The service is welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The food is what you would expect from this chain. The green chili is tender and full of flavor. Not quite sure what to think of this place or say that I would make it a point to return. We ordered the table side guacamole. The only thing tasty about it was the added pomegranate. Basically chunks of avocado, not even smashed and just no flavor. Then to try and eat that with a basket of tortilla chip broken crumbs, basically had to eat it with a fork or two small chips to scoop together. I had the enchilada trio which was alright but had a tangy taste to the white sauce and a bit of ketchup tomato taste to the red sauce. I want to give a huge shoutout to Louis P. for making my impromptu Friday night dinner so awesome! After a few drinks across the street, I was craving more than regular bar grub, so I wandered over to Barrio Queen. It was surprisingly quiet on a Friday night since this place usually rocks, but I slid onto a stool at the one open bar. Louis spotted me right away and greeted me like an old friend. Even though I was solo with two other couples at the bar, he never left me hanging. He was super engaging and gave top notch service. When I asked about my favorite vegetarian taco disappearing from the menu, he just smiled and said, don't worry, I'll have the kitchen whip it up just for you. We went to Barrio Queen for restaurant week - we really liked the way the prix fixe menu looked, four courses (where course one was a margarita or margarita flight) for $33. The place was busy, but because we had a reservation we were seated promptly. About ten minutes after being seated we were given menus and ordered drinks and discussed the menu with our server. Our table was nicely sized, a four-top hightop table near the bar. The restaurant was noisy, but not so loud that our party couldn't have a good conversation in normal speaking voices. The first "course" was a choice of a house margarita or a three-margarita flight (house, jalapeño, and pineapple/lime). We all agreed that the house marg was the best of the three, not too tart and not too sweet. Our second course, an appetizer, was a choice of either guacamole or Mexican street corn. Each couple in our party ordered one of each and shared. Both were very good, and the street corn was especially tasty. The guacamole was "chunky" style - with nice, ripe pieces of avocado. The main course offered a choice of an enchilada trio, a burrito made with pork chile verde, and a taco trio. Each couple at our table ordered an enchilada plate and a burrito, and while all were tasty we agreed that the burrito was the clear winner. HUGE, nice combination of seasonings, and not too spicy for anybody at the table. All of our entrees were served with rice and beans - neither was distinctive, and because portions were so large these were mostly left uneaten. Dessert was a choice of either churros with vanilla bean ice cream or a flan with pecans and Kalua sauce. Both were good, but the majority thought the churros were the clear winner - crunchy, chewy, warm, and they paired nicely with the ice cream. The flan was very good as well - just not AS distinctive. The service was where we had a problem. Our server was personable, always brought what we asked (eventually), but did not check in with us often enough. Our dinner took about two hours - it should have easily been done in 90 minutes. I never saw any evidence that the servers were slacking - I think they just had too many tables. Our server appeared to have most of her tables on the patio, so she didn't pass by us enough to even flag her down. The very strange part of our experience was the total lack of management visibility. No manager ever stopped by our table, nor did we see anyone near us have any interaction with a manager. On our way out we saw a manager working at the front register, and it made us wonder where he had been for our whole meal - it was the first we noticed him. Also - I would strongly recommend to this restaurant that they have someone responsible for clearing used plates, glasses, and silverware. My earlier comment about the table being a good size only applied to our initial seating - as it filled up with plates from different courses we had multiple piles of dirty dishes/glasses everywhere. We'll go back for the food, which we enjoyed very much. We only hope that the service will be better! read more

The server was very nice. The ambiance is nice too, large outside plus inside space. We sat outside and the sunset was in plain site for us to see. It was National Margarita Day, so I decided to celebrate with a margarita and chose Barrio Queen since they were offering half-off margaritas. I made a 3pm reservation and was seated on the patio. The staff was friendly, though it seemed like they might have been short-handed or just really busy. We ordered a jalapeño margarita, a Barrio Paloma, and a skinny chola margarita. The chips, salsa, and cocktail corn we added came out quickly, but the drinks took about 10-15 minutes to arrive. I liked how they prepared the Barrio Paloma at the table with Jarritos--it was a nice touch. The margaritas were solid, and the music added a good atmosphere. I'd consider coming back to try the food. Our server did a decent job despite some delays, and it was clear she was working hard. read more

Happy Hour is definitely the star of the show: 2 for $5 Tacos - My husband got Carnitas & Chicken Chicken Flautas $5 - Good but definitely well done, so it was a bit tough to bite through Tableside Guac $15 - Ok, so this was actually good because the pomegranate seeds were a game changer!! But wild that it's 15 dollars for ONE avocado. Also, the avocado was in chunks, it was just cut - there wasn't any mashing done. Would I go again? If my friends want to go to HH, sure. read more

Took our drink orders and we browsed the happy hour menu while our $5 margaritas were being made. No skimping on them. I had two- one on the rocks then a frozen strawberry- both excellent!!! A side of beans and some pretty tasty salsas went well with the freshly made tortilla chips. This mall is fairly new and has a myriad of choices for food. Super disappointed in their food and the general atmosphere here. Walking into a Mexican restaurant and being the only "brown" people there was wild to me. What really was the icing on the cake was the proud MAGA hats all around us in a "Mexican" establishment. The food here is not great at all. We're from the Bay Area and not even Mexican so we know what good food is. You definitely will not find it here. Their service is mid. There is some good and some not so good here which puts it middle of the road. The good: the salsa has really good flavor. The fajitas were pretty decent. The lemon drop was fantastic and big. The not so great: it was wide open when we got there and we were sat at the tiniest table of all time right next to a baby that kept reaching over and grabbing things off of our table. It's not the baby's fault, it just wasn't good planning on the restaurants part for where the table was and where they put us when there was other options. Our server was barely pleasant. She didn't seem thrilled to be there, and if there was anything extra asked for it definitely seemed to put her out. I cannot stand when restaurants don't have salt and pepper on the table. My sister and I had a truly fantastic lunch at Barrio Queen yesterday! Our server David was brilliant and attentive. Our beverages were delicious and my frozen Strawberry Limonada was not only perfectly blended but it was served in a gorgeous glass with a preciously ripe strawberry on the rim. The Carne Asada Taco Trio I ordered was next level after adding the egg on top. The chunks of meat were cooked beautifully-melt in your mouth. Along with avocado slices, diced red onions and cilantro these tacos were an absolutely perfect combination! My sister had the Birra Chimi Chingonas from the Winter menu. They were lightly fried and full of goodness; beef, cheese, lettuce,pico,avocado crema! I would definitely order them if I could get past the tacos! Our server David checked on us often and was kind enough to take our picture. We loved the patio dining. We were both impressed that every bite and sip we had was so good! The short rib taco was amazing! Flautas looked pretty but lacked flavor and the carnitas taco was pretty basic. Margaritas were delicious (tried the house marg and skinny marg) but we were bummed they were sold out of every draft Mexican beer except for the Huss Mexican lager. We first tried Barrio Queen years ago when they opened in Gilbert and just wasn't wow'd. So we decided to give them a second chance last night and it was still disappointing. They were super busy but it just wasn't worth it. We ordered the table side guac and it was very good. I like that it was chunky. But $12 for one avocado? Wasn't all that great. Chips were thick and hot. Server asked if we wanted to try the hot habanero salsa so we said sure. It had a lot of lime. I think they forgot the habanero because the red salsa had more flavor. Then we waited for awhile for drink refills that we had to ask for multiple times. They never took away our empty plates. Eventually we got our dinners. Which were just three taco plates each and two sides. Nothing was hot. One of my tacos was wrong. Server was nice enough to refire the order for a new taco and take it off the tab. But still. Didn't care for the tacos. I had a beef, pork, and chicken taco. Meats were tough and chewy. Sides I got was the zucchini which was good, and chorizo beans. Again. Cold. Then we decided they had one last chance to wow us so we got the churro dessert. Now that was actually hot! lol. But no one warned they were stuffed. Then we proceeded to wait even longer for the check to come. Just to wait more to have the server come back and cash us out at the table. Two hour dinner. Cold food. Server was a nice guy. The new Barrio Queen in Surpise is gorgeous! It has a huge open layout with two large bars and a wrap around patio. The weather was amazing last night and they had the patio opened up to the bar. Great atmosphere and great tacos and margaritas! I also enjoyed the carne asada entree. Ask for extra tortillas because they only give you two tiny ones and it's just not enough for that big slab of delicious meat. The staff and manager were super friendly, too. I'd say it's a little overpriced for what you get but it's worth it when you factor in the ambiance of the place and the excellent bar and patio. Definitely a great addition to Surprise! read more

This is Barrio Queen Prasada. We are huge fans of the other locations. We went on this past Saturday ... NO HAPPY HOUR, small print, it's only at other locations. OK , on us for not reading thoroughly. We ordered quesadillas.... OMG, 3 rolled up tortillas with cheese and shrimp... ROLLED UP, size of a cigar... no sauce, no other ingredients! Puny and I've never seen a quesadilla rolled up like that! Manager said that was a "grilled" quesadilla... we didn't order a "grilled" quesadilla! Plus, it was pathetic! He then went to kitchen. Returned with a tortilla cut in quarters filled with a bit of cheese and shrimp with the cabbage, tomatoes and onion sprinkled on top... said he fixed it himself! He should not ever double as a chef! I didn't eat mine, it was dry and very unappetizing. I'd ordered a second glass of wine... I ended up after 30 mins if no wine going to the bar to pick up my own wine. I've been meaning to try a Barrio Queen for over a year now, so when I saw Surpise was getting one and so close to our place I had to go! Love, love, love the atmosphere in here! Lots of ample seating to include two large bars, high top tables, low tables, booths and outdoor tables. Great visuals and lighting throughout the space. There are also several big screen tv's for sports/game day. They've only been open for a day, so they were fully staffed, super attentive and no wait time when we came in at 4pm. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and moving with a sense of purpose. The food and drinks were great. The salsa was nice and spicy (will definitely give the recommended Habeñero one a try next time). FYI, unlike most Mexican restaurants entrees do not come with rice and beans. I personally like this because it's always too much food for me. Didn't try any margaritas or desserts this time around, but look forward to trying them when we return. I did however buy a t-shirt because they were too darn cute. I got the long sleeved one. Well. In the past before the owners sold out to Famous Dave's I would often visit the old town Scottsdale location. It used to be 5 stars--real Mexican food. I would have business luncheons and dinners there. Pre. Covid I visited the arrowhead mall location it was also good but not like the original location. After covid I visited that arrowhead location and service and food was terrible. So I thought I would try this new Surprise location. Interior looks like any new restaurant with garage doors. They kept pushing to sit outside and left the door open. Freezing inside with no one sitting outside at 71 degrees. Food was average except all the tortillas and enchiladas now have an extra thick tortilla. Not a fan. Service was very good. Except for the two dancing bus boys. Giving a 3.5 rounding down. Our waitress was a sweetheart Kaylie (i think) she busy but attentive. The food was great!! $7 kids meals with a drink and desert. The chicken relleno was amazing, great flavor, great presentation. Finally got to check out the new Barrio Queen in Surprise. I've been to the one in Glendale several times, which is a bit bigger but the ambiance at the Surprise location is really bright and welcoming. Especially when they have the sliding doors open for an indoor/outdoor space. If you haven't been during Happy Hour, you're missing out. They have awesome specials on drinks and food, like the $5 margaritas!! I had the Barrio marg and it was perfect, not too sweet or sour (they use fresh lime juice). Although it's not on the happy hour menu, we had to get the table side guac- I love the pop of pomegranate seeds, nice touch! We also got the elote dip, because why not? From the HH menu, we had potato empanadas and two of each of the tacos- carnitas, pollo and suadero. 2 for $5, can't beat that!! Make sure to get extra salsa (or hot salsa if that's your jam), a must have for the tacos. Overall, service was great and food was awesome!! We went there for a early lunch. The food was delicious!! I had the cheese quesadilla and my friend had some kind of bowl type thing that was really good . The service was excellent and the atmosphere was very relaxing!! And the homemade chips and salsa were sooo good !! And those little green and white candies by the front are delicious!! First time coming here. I first want to start off by saying our bartender David was absolutely amazing. He was busting his ass all night and still managed to be attentive. He alone made our visit a great experience. We bypassed the wait because the bar is open seating (hence meeting David). David made me a mango margarita that wasn't on the menu because none of the drinks were really sticking out to me.. I don't usually like margaritas so I don't think my opinion counts. My boyfriend ordered the chingonarita, it comes with a mini corona. He loved it. For food, I ordered 3 quesabirria tacos with no red onion (just my preference). I ordered a side of rice and chorizo beans since the tacos didn't come with a side. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and steak fajitas and it came with a couple flour tortillas, rice and charro beans. He's not a bean fan so his opinion doesn't count. My tacos were small street tacos and they only had one corn tortilla each. They skimped me on the meat pretty bad. The taste of the taco was delicious though. The meat was very tender and flavorful. The consome on the side was also flavorful. I just wish they added more meat and two corn tortillas rather than one. The rice had a mild flavor but it was good. The beans were okay as well. I would order all of this again. My boyfriend said the fajitas were good. Overall, for the prices they have, they shouldn't be cutting corners on the amount of food you receive.
