This was my first time visiting this chain. A new location just opened up in Surprise right near me. I was excited to try it but nervous due to some negative reviews. We went on a busy Friday night. I don't think they take reservations. It was super busy. They had plenty of open tables outside but it was too hot! We were told it was going to be 45 minutes wait but it was much less than that. We sat inside and even though it was super busy, the service was fast and friendly. Our food and drinks came out quickly, our servers were great! Food was delicious. Walked in with no wait for outdoor. There were plenty of heaters so it was comfortable even with a small breeze. Our waitress was very sweet but took a while to start us off with drinks and wasn't as atte rice to our table the whole time. We ordered the queso fundido (sorry no pic). Was good but wasn't as cheesy as I'd like. Only brought out three tortillas which i feel could've been given more. 6/10 My husband ordered the Carne Asada entree and i got the Carne asada torta. The refried beens were terrible and had a very weird color. Rice was a bit dry and lacked seasoning. Only got two tortillas. The carne asada was good and tender but too salty. The torta was good. Felt like it didn't have much carne asada but was decent. Kind of dry because they didn't add much mayo and only gave me one or two slices of avocado which disappointed me. The fries were overly seasoned but the ones that weren't were very good. Had a strawberry margarita which was very good but very sweet so be prepared. I've been to different locations and by far this was the worst food I've ever eaten! The empanadas are small corn tortillas flattened and deep fried. Not the pastry they are suppose to be. Salsa was flavorless. The "Happy Hour" tacos are raw corn tortillas. I'm not sure what I ate there...as it was my only meal for the day, but the FOOD Poisoning that resulted was bad. Horrible service. We have been to Barrio Queen in Avondale several times and were excited to take guests to the Barrio Queen in Surprise. We had the absolute worst service. The waitress was slow, seemed confused and truly did not care about our experience. The meal was over before our second round of drinks arrived. We sat and watched the bartender chit chat with the staff instead of making drinks. The restaurant was basically empty - and I know why! We complained to the "manager" who said our waitress had been in a few car accidents and we were making the problem worse for her with OUR attitude. Unbelievable. Barrio Queen used to be the place I would go for good chips and salsa. Their chips used to set them apart from any other Mexican Restaurant. They have since changed their chips to be like any other ordinary restaurant. Honestly, I have bought better chips from a bag at the grocery store. Recently visited here with my family for lunch and while the servers and staff were very nice there seemed to be an overall lack of communication. It wasn't overly busy but we waited a long time to be greeted at our table and throughout the entire meal we were asked the same questions (orders, drink refills, etc) by 3 separate servers that I wasn't sure who our server even was. I did like the appetizer trio! My tacos were ok at first but there was an excessive amount of oil pooled on my plate that I couldn't finish them. My husband didn't really have any complaints about his plate though. I would come back for another chance but didn't feel like it was particularly special. Thought we would give it a try. The atmosphere was pretty nice with some good tunes playing. It was not overly busy, but there was a wait to be seated. My wife and I decided to just sit at the bar. The bad: We were battling flies. No windows were open, just a lot of flies. Service was slow. We never even received our chips and salsa. We ordered an app, and they brought it out with our meals. I'm not too happy about that. The good: The tacos were pretty good, and I had the quesobirria tacos. Would highly recommend. Nachos were meh. My wife enjoyed her shrimp cocktail, but it needed tapatio. Overall, I needed better service and a cleaner environment. The bar was dirty, and the head chef had to come out and clean it himself. Love this location! Dominic is the best bartender. I feel like he is warm, attentive, polite, and hardworking. Every time I've come in, he's been in a good mood And makes me feel like he actually enjoys his job, by his attitude. I have been so fortunate to come in during his shifts weekly. Honestly, If he's ever not at the bar, I will Opt for a table instead. He just makes the experience at the bar so much more pleasant with his hospitality. I really enjoyed the tableside chips/guacamole that is made to your requested level of spicyness. The guacamole is combined with pomegranate seeds for a uniquely different taste. On this visit we shared 2 different tacos carnitas, carne asada and the Barrio Pollo burrito. All our entries were very good, the meat/chicken was moist and flavorful with just the right amount of spice and everything was made to order and served hot. Stopped here on a Saturday to have lunch with my in-laws. The food was pretty good and I really like the chips and salsa that they served in the beginning. The decor and the restaurant itself is extremely beautiful, but the doors were left open so there was the occasional fly buzzing around, but it wasn't too bad. The server was OK. It started filling up right after we got there. We had to ask to have our waters refilled, but our waitress was pretty nice, but she seemed pretty busy. After about 20 minutes a manger walking. By asked if we had been helped. We said no and now we where late for Happy Hour. He got a waitress to take care of us and said happy hour was still on for us. Complimentary waters were served quickly, followed by tasty margheritas -- a bit watered down, but still flavorful and festive. the salsa was terrific, with a tangy picante that paired well with the drinks. I ordered a combo plate with tacos, enchilada with rice and beans. My wife ordered a carne asada burrito. While my dish was disappointing -- taco shell fell apart instantly, enchilada was bland, beans & rice were dry and flavorless, my wife was thrilled with hers. She gave me a bite -- yes, fantastic flavor! I saw several platters of various tacos going to other tables, and those looked/smelled great too. It was definitely a hit & miss night for us, but then again, we chose a night where the place was absolutely slammed. Based upon the delicious carne asada burrito bite that I had, I'm willing to give it another shot when the crowd is not maxed. Service was swift and prices were a bit steep for Mex food. I told her there was absolutely no shrimp in my surf n turf and showed her my taco. She politely offered to bring a fried or grilled shrimp taco, so asked for a grilled taco. I promptly received a fried shrimp taco? LOL. Server said she heard me wrong and took the blame for her mistake. The Taco was tasty but nothing special. However, I don't know why this place always has so many flies about the place! We've been here probably 4 times (twice for a family birthday gathering)and every time we are shooing flies from our food.! Ugh, I totally forgot about that part until seated. Not a bad tasting meal but not worth the price and hassle, PLUS the flies are a big turn off so this will be our last visit. I didn't notice till after we left the restaurant that she did remove the taco from my ticket. Because she didn't say anything about the comp, I didn't notice while paying. Mini tacos with a spoon full of meat (ordered carne asada chorizo y queso taco). The service was a little slow which I let pass but they weren't as busy and unfortunately it did take a while for them to take our orders for the drinks. We did also have to ask for utensils, straws, and napkins instead of them already being there for us/them bringing it to us. Ordered the shrimp cocktail and The Queen enchiladas and added the chicken inside. The shrimp cocktail was good, I would order it again but unfortunately the enchiladas weren't as good. The tortilla was hard and seemed as it wasn't cooked for long and the chicken was almost bright pink. They reassured me that it was red meat but I couldn't bring myself to eat it so I had ordered the carne asada tacos instead. They brought those out including rice and beans and it did come out fast but unfortunately those were pink as well. They again reassured me that they cook the meat medium rare but unfortunately I had lost my appetite by then. The tortillas on those tacos were also hard to chew and the meat was cold. The manager who I assume was came out and offered to make me something that was cooked medium well but I declined. Their kindness to offer me different dishes and remake them were appreciated but unfortunately the food and service in the beginning wasn't what I had hoped. They also didn't charge us for the enchiladas and tacos which was appreciated but I am hoping in the future they are able to let their customers know how they cook the meats so they don't get surprised like I did. read more

I ordered the Barrio Bowl and it was decent but I don't think it deserved the price I was charged for it. The fajitas my mom ordered were SALTY. She is the type that hates speaking up / sending things back. I didn't realize how inedible they truly were until I took her leftovers home. I really wish she would have told me / someone while we were there. Very unfortunate. Got there towards the end of Happy Hour and ordered appetizers and the Barrio margaritas. Muy bien! The variety of tacos available is amazing and all that I tried were very tasty. For the first time visiting a Barrio Queen I didn't know what to expect as I have heard mixed reviews based on other locations. I was overall pleased with the causal ambiance and open floor plan that allows fresh air to come into the bar area on a nice day. Happy hour specials are at an excellent price point but the apps available on that menu aren't the largest portions around. My wife got the HH flatuas and only 2 were included with that. The short rib birria tacos had amazing flavor with every bite and were my personal favorite when compared to the carnitas tacos. The reason this review gets 4 stars is because the beer selections available at the time were very underwhelming. They have 10 taps at this particular location and only 5 or 6 of those were actually on tap and the remaining were out. Hope that can get resolved for future visits because I would like to include this place in my HH rotation. read more

Really disappointed with the "Mexican food" here. The short rib tacos were extremely salty. And the tortillas were MICROWAVED. If you're Mexican or know about tortillas you KNOW when they are microwaved. That's nasty...the tortillas were hard and rubbery. The mole enchiladas were eh....way too sweet for some reason. Funny businesses profit off of a once a year celebration for Mexicans. It's like having a restaurant fully Halloween themed, just weird. Service was good; just very "Americanized." read more

Stopped in on a Friday at 5:20. We did not make a reservation because A. I didn't know they took reservations and B. It was early so I never would have thought it would be busy. Waited over 30 mins for a table when I could see LOTS of open tables available. Not really sure why that was. We could have sat outside but even with the heaters it was a bit too chilly. Thankfully people on the waitlist in front of us must have left because the wait was only about 10 mins. The server was VERY nice!! Bar was backed up and she was very apologetic about that. Again, not that busy so not sure why things were backed up. Food was OK but not hot. None of our meals were hot. Over all it was OK, I know we will be back because we don't think there are many good "Mexican" restaurants around. But we will remember to make reservations next time. read more
